car&bike Expert Take

“The Honda City Hybrid is for those who value smoothness, efficiency, and everyday comfort over outright performance. It is not for those looking for the most feature-loaded sedan in the market, but as a well-balanced and practical sedan for daily use, it makes a strong case.”

Introduced as a more efficient alternative to the standard City, the Honda City Hybrid brings a strong hybrid powertrain to a segment otherwise focused on turbo-petrol performance. It is currently the only sedan in its class to offer a self-charging hybrid setup that prioritises smoothness and fuel efficiency over outright speed.

We evaluated the City Hybrid across different driving conditions and found that it often runs in pure EV mode at low speeds, making it feel quiet and refined. On highways, it remains stable and comfortable, though it does not aim to deliver a sporty or thrilling experience.

This review brings together insights based on real-world usage by auto journalist Seshan Vijayraghvan in our detailed YouTube video as we compare it against rivals Mahindra XEV 9e and Toyota Innova Hycross. It may not be the most exciting car in the segment, but it is easily one of the most sensible and well-rounded options available today.

The Honda City Hybrid’s powertrain is built around smoothness and efficiency rather than outright performance. It uses a strong-hybrid setup that focuses on seamless transitions between electric and petrol power, which makes everyday driving feel effortless.

Engine Options Tested

The following table lists the powertrain available in the sedan:

Driving Experience: Real World

City Driving

In the city, we found the City Hybrid to be extremely easy to drive. At low speeds, it runs silently in EV mode most of the time, and the transition to engine power is barely noticeable. The steering is light, and the car feels manageable in tight spaces.

Highway Driving

On highways, the City Hybrid feels stable and composed. It cruises comfortably at triple-digit speeds, and overtakes are handled smoothly when the engine and motor work together. It’s not quick in an exciting way, but it feels predictable and relaxed over long distances.

e-CVT Driving Experience

The e-CVT gearbox is tuned for smoothness. We found that it delivers power in a very linear manner, with no jerks or sudden shifts. It suits a calm driving style, but if you push hard, it doesn’t feel very engaging.

Seshan Vijayraghvan notes,

“The hybrid system is the highlight as it feels incredibly smooth, quiet, and refined.”

The Honda City Hybrid hasn’t gone through any radical redesign, but over time, the design has changed to one that still feels premium. We evaluated the overall look, and it’s clear that this is a sedan that avoids unnecessary drama and focuses on clean, well-balanced styling.

Here’s a summary of the car’s most noticeable elements:

  • It gets a sleek profile with a sloping roofline and long overhangs
  • The front looks slightly sporty with sharp headlights and a chrome strip
  • The rear keeps things simple but adds a subtle sporty touch with a boot lip spoiler

Though City Hybrid is a sedan, buyers often cross-shop it with the XEV 9e and Hycross as they occupy a similar price bracket despite belonging to different segments. When you look at the numbers, the Honda City Hybrid is clearly smaller and lighter than both. We found that this actually works in its favour in everyday driving as it feels easier to manoeuvre and less intimidating in tight spaces. But you do have to be slightly careful with ground clearance.

The Honda City Hybrid doesn’t follow the trend of sharp, aggressive redesigns. Instead, it sticks to a design that feels familiar but still premium. When we evaluated it, we found that it doesn’t try too hard to stand out, and that works in its favour.

Front Profile

At the front, the City Hybrid gets a sleek and slightly sporty look. Its fascia is defined by a thick chrome strip connecting the LED headlights, which feature sharp DRLs and a clean lighting signature. The bumper has subtle cuts and LED fog lamps, adding just enough detail without making it look busy.

Side Profile

From the side, the design remains simple and well-proportioned. The long overhangs and sloping roofline give it a proper sedan stance. The 16-inch alloy wheels look neat, and the shark fin antenna adds a modern touch without overcomplicating the design.

Rear Profile

At the rear, the wraparound LED taillights and clean boot design keep things understated. We found the small boot lip spoiler and diffuser-like elements add a slight sporty touch, but overall, the design stays subtle and mature rather than attention-seeking.

Pros

  • Strong hybrid powertrain delivers excellent fuel efficiency
  • Smooth and refined driving experience
  • Comfortable cabin and spacious rear seats
  • Stable ride with good high-speed composure

Cons

  • Misses out on ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera
  • The infotainment screen feels small and dated
  • Limited rear charging options for passengers
  • Reduced boot space compared to the petrol version

Verdict

The Honda City Hybrid is built for buyers who value efficiency and comfort over outright performance. It delivers a smooth, quiet, and effortless driving experience, especially in city traffic. The transition between electric and petrol power is seamless, and the fuel efficiency stands out even in real-world conditions.

The rear seat, in particular, is one of its strongest aspects, making it a great choice for long drives. While it does miss out on some modern features and the infotainment system feels a step behind rivals, it still covers all the essentials for daily use.

Overall, the City Hybrid may not be the most feature-packed or performance-focused sedan, but it stands out as one of the most balanced and sensible options in its segment. It suits buyers who want a refined, efficient, and easy-to-live-with daily driver.

Seshan concludes,

“It may not be the most exciting car, but it’s one of the most balanced packages you can buy.”
