What's New?

Mercedes-AMG unveiled the new 2020 AMG GT at the 2018 L.A. Auto Show and the new model has received styling updates along with technological and performance upgrades and yes it will come to India. The 2020 Mercedes AMG GT will be available in the GT, GT C, GTR and a new top ranging and even more manic GTR Pro trim. However, the 2020 Mercedes AMG GT is more mature than manic, especially in the matte grey paintwork it is showcased in. It's still a two-door sports car and the Panamericana grille has also been retained but is more angular at the edges and the headlights have also been re-worked- essentially has been borrowed from the new AMG GT 4-door.On the AMG GT  C, the rear has been tweaked so minutely that it's hard to differentiate and the only thing which comes quite apparent at the rear is the new tailpipe design.

The most significant changes are seen in the cockpit. For starters, it gets the new touchpad-based infotainment system and a wide 12.3-inch digital screen as standard. The new steering wheel too has made way inside this model with two touch-sensitive nubs through which we can control the functions on the instrument cluster and obviously on the 10.3-inch console-mounted screen. Moreover, it gets an AMG specific LCD display which integrates the controls for the performance and drive modes. In the central console, there are colour display buttons and the TFT switches are to adjust things like transmission and chassis settings, exhaust system, start-stop system, and the DRS controls. Though the 2020 spec model is a minor update that isn't limited only to cosmetics. The performance of the 2020 Mercedes AMG GT has been improved with the new AMG Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) where the system gels with the drive modes to offer different level of settings- Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master.

The Basic mode takes care of slippery and comfort drive modes and has the stability control setup at its best. The Advance settings come in the sports drove mode and pro takes care of the sports+ drive modes. But Master does the best to leave the driver uncanny as it shuts down all the electronic nannies and let the GTR go completely insane. Despite all the additions in the variants and body, it's still a minor upgrade and going by the standards there hasn't been any change mechanically. Under the hood is the same 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged, V8 engine which produces 462 bhp in the standard GT coupe and roadster while 542 bhp in the GT C coupe and roadster. The top ranging GTR and GTR Pro have the same engine tuned to churn out a whopping 570 bhp.

Pros

  • It's all about performance and the GT has every ounce of it
  • The 9-speed transmission really is very responsive
  • It is a practical yet performance oriented sedan

Cons

  • The suspension is a little stiff
  • The cabin could have had more features
  • The rear seats get a little bumpy at high speeds.
Verdict

It is very forgiving and isn't hard to drive, meaning anyone can drive it hard, and more easily than a car like the SLS. The GT was born for the track and all its performance attributes instantly come racing to the fore, especially when you have it in sport mode on a fast track. The steering is also extremely precise, though I would have liked it stay a touch stiffer. But this car instantly comes across as a very well-engineered machine.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door is not merely a car; it’s an embodiment of passion, innovation, and luxury. With its 2022 update, the brand has once again demonstrated its commitment to crafting vehicles that blend art with engineering. Drawing from a lineage of excellence, the GT Four-Door captures the very essence of what it means to be a performance sedan. For those who seek the best in automotive design and performance, this vehicle stands as a testament to Mercedes-AMG’s dedication to pushing boundaries and setting new standards.

Design and Styling

With each generation, the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door has whispered tales of its lineage, proudly wearing its heritage while embracing the future. The 2022 model is no different. Its silhouette remains as captivating as ever, yet the nuances tell a new story. The Rubellite Red Metallic shade invokes feelings of passion and dynamism. Complementing this is the silver chrome exterior package, which is a great example of attention to detail. The new 21-inch alloy wheels also add their charm here. Every curve, every line, and every design choice offers beauty and function in equal measure.

Interior and Features

Stepping inside the GT Four-Door feels like entering an exclusive world of luxury. The Neva Grey Nappa leather, gracefully paired with Ash wood trim, evokes a sense of sophistication. Central to the cabin’s aesthetic and functionality is the new AMG Performance steering wheel. Its twin-spoke design, integrated buttons, and drive mode dials exhibit both form and function. The wheel’s finish, whether in Nappa leather or the dynamic Dinamica suede, adds another layer of tactile luxury.
The car gets a plethora of leather options, including hues of Sienna Brown, Classic Red, Yacht Blue, Deep White, and Neva Grey. This ensures that every individual can infuse a personal touch into the cabin. For those seeking an elevated luxury experience, the Exclusive Nappa Leather options in Titanium Grey Pearl and Auburn Brown, embellished with contrast stitching, are there too. Functionality meets luxury once again with the introduction of a five-seat configuration, featuring an optional rear bench – a premier offering that ensures no passenger is left wanting for space or comfort.

Safety

While the beauty and performance of the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door are evident, its safety features too work silently in the background. From state-of-the-art sensors that constantly monitor the vehicle’s surroundings to intelligent systems that can anticipate and react to potential hazards, every element is designed to protect and reassure. Mercedes says safety for it isn’t just a feature; it’s a promise, ensuring that drivers and passengers alike are cocooned in a sanctuary of trust and peace of mind.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood of the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door is a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder twin-turbo engine, designed for optimal performance and efficiency. With the EQ Boost, the GT 43 and GT 53 variants deliver 357 bhp and 423 bhp respectively, transforming raw power into artful performance. While the GT 43 reaches triple-digit speeds in just 4.8 seconds, the GT 53 following closely, achieves this in 4.4 seconds. What will bring a bigger smile to your face is the talk about a possible V8 motor, hinting at even more powerful performance on the horizon.

Ride and Handling

With its reworked adaptive suspension and the updated AMG Ride Control Plus, the new Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door comes across as a masterclass in balance and control. The inclusion of two pressure limiting valves – one focusing on rebound damping and the other on compression damping – ensures that the car remains as serene or as spirited as the driver desires. Whether cruising leisurely in Comfort mode or tearing up the asphalt in Sport and Sport Plus modes, the car remains agile, planted, and ever-responsive to the driver’s slightest whim.

Pricing

The asking price of this sportscar mirrors its advanced technology, the attention to detail in its design, and the legacy of the Mercedes brand. Beyond just a car; it’s a membership to an elite group. Each drive serves as a reminder of a commitment to superior automotive design and experience.

Which Variant to Buy?

Choosing the right variant of the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door is akin to selecting the perfect note in a symphony – each has its own allure, yet contributes to a harmonious whole. The GT 43, with its compelling balance of power and agility, is perfect for those who seek thrilling performance combined with everyday usability. The GT 53, on the other hand, offers a tad more power, shaving those crucial tenths of a second for those hungry for the edge. However, the whispers of the V8 motor are hard to ignore. Its impending arrival promises to redefine performance and luxury. Whether you prioritize sheer power, refined performance, or a blend of both, the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door offers a variant that resonates with your heartbeat.

Competition

In the world of luxury performance sedans, the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door isn’t alone, yet it stands distinct. Its rivals, each with their own legacy and prowess, aim to captivate the hearts of automotive enthusiasts. But what sets the Mercedes apart is its rich lineage, a seamless blend of performance and luxury, and an unyielding commitment to innovation. As competitors vie for a slice of this prestigious segment, the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door confidently showcases its prowess, ever-ready to defend its crown. While the competition is fierce, It only serves to elevate the standards of this illustrious class, ensuring that the ultimate winner is you, the customer.
