car&bike Expert Take

“The BMW Z4 is an open-top roadster done the right way. It has an inline-six engine, and its road presence is something to brag about for its owners. It's also one highly mature sports car that rewards you whether you are cruising or challenging its ultimate capabilities.”

The BMW Z4 is a flagship car for the Bavarian brand, representing its long history of two-seater sports cars. Interestingly, it's built side-by-side with the Toyota Supra at Magna Steyr’s plant in Graz, Austria. BMW developed the platform and drivetrain for this convertible while creating the base for the Supra as well.

The 2025-26 update in India has amped up the BMW Z4's performance, particularly with the M40i Pure Impulse Edition now having a six-speed manual gearbox. No doubt, it's a costly vehicle for many, but the roadster feel it gives at this price point is something arguably unmatched.

However, the Z4 has also reached its production end, as BMW has decided to pull the plug on it with a limited-run Final EditionSeshan Vijayraghvan and Girish Karkera from the car&bike team both checked out this car, going over its features, performance, and position in the Indian market. We have added their opinions to this review.

The BMW Z4 has a 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo inline-six engine; this motor produces a healthy 335 bhp and 500 Nm of torque in its India-spec M40i guise. The engine feels muscular across the powerband, offering plenty of low and top-end torque at the same time. You can pair it with the familiar eight-speed automatic, or go for the recently introduced six-speed manual.

According to Seshan,

"The BMW Z4 is precise, powerful, and relaxed. It won't make you nervous; it simply goes about its business with German perfection."

Driving Experience: Real World

The Z4's power-packed figures do not try to scare you. Instead, it builds your confidence quickly.

City Driving

In city traffic, the Z4’s engine feels surprisingly manageable. You never feel a sudden surge of power unless you explicitly ask for it. The automatic gearbox slurs through ratios smoothly, and the new six-speed manual intentionally makes your riding experience more engaging, keeping you focused at all times.

Highway Driving

Out on the open road, the inline-six engine sings a beautiful mechanical note as you approach the redline. Overtaking takes a mere flex of the right foot. With the roof down, wind buffering is well-controlled up to 100 kmph, allowing you to hold a conversation without shouting. Put the roof up, and it isolates road noise nearly as well as a fixed-roof coupe.

The Z4 grabs attention without depending on massive wings or fake vents, as it relies on its aggressive face and low-slung profile.

Seshan observes,

"With slim taillights like the 8 Series, it looks dark, menacing, and modern."

Dimensions Comparison

DimensionBMW Z4MG CybersterMercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet
Length4,324 mm4,535 mm4,850 mm
Width1,864 mm1,913 mm1,861 mm
Height1,304 mm1,329 mm1,423–1,425 mm
Wheelbase2,470 mm2,690 mm2,865 mm

BMW’s latest design language can be clearly seen here. It looks squat and purposeful at 1,864 mm, a tad bit more than the MG Cyberster. The proportions are spot on, with the driver sitting far back, almost over the rear axle. This classic layout never really gets old.

Sticking to a classic roadster look, the car has a powerful appearance from all angles.

Front Profile

  • The front has a large, aggressive grille with sporty M-style mesh detailing on the top-spec M40i.
  • Vertically stacked LED headlamps give it a distinct face compared to other BMW sedans.
  • A long, sculpted bonnet stretches over the front wheels.

Side Profile

  • The fabric roof operates electronically in roughly 10 seconds.
  • The car sits on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels on the Pure Impulse variant.
  • There are some air breathers behind the front wheels to help in aerodynamics.

Rear Profile

  • The slim, horizontal taillights borrow heavily from the 8 Series.
  • An integrated boot lip spoiler adds visual weight to the rear.
  • Twin exhaust tailpipes sit neatly within the aggressive lower diffuser.

Once you put your feet inside the Z4, you are immediately greeted by a driver-focused cabin built with high-quality materials. It feels distinctly BMW.

Cabin Layout and Quality

The dashboard features a driver-centric tilt, making it easy to reach the physical buttons that remain for the climate control. Soft-touch materials cover the upper dash, while the switchgear feels solid and satisfying to press. It uses the modern iDrive system.

Meanwhile, contrast stitching and metallic trim pieces break up the dark plastics effectively. Everything you touch feels expensive and well-assembled.

According to Seshan,

"The cabin is more plush, feels wider, and benefits from the infinite headroom of a roadster."

Seating Comfort

The two-seater layout means interior packaging is heavily focused on the driver and passenger, offering a snug but comfortable environment.

Front Row

The M Sport seats have excellent lateral support to hold you tight through fast corners. They also get electrical adjustment and memory functions, and you sit very low to the ground. Despite the low roofline when the top is up, headroom is generous enough for taller adults. The driving position is spot on, with the steering wheel offering plenty of reach and rake adjustment.

Features That Improve Daily Use

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with quick responses
  • 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster displaying vital driving data
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Harman Kardon surround sound system with crisp audio output
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control for individual comfort
  • Wireless charging pad tucked neatly into the centre console

The BMW Z4 is brought to India as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit, meaning it carries a hefty price tag due to import duties. It sits between Rs. 90.50 lakh and Rs. 95.20 lakh (ex-showroom). The introduction of the Pure Impulse Edition gives purists a highly desirable manual gearbox option, though it comes at a premium.

The Z4 performs reasonably well if you drive it calmly, but we need to be realistic about fuel efficiency in a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder sports car as well. The engine features auto start-stop and a coasting function in the Eco mode to save fuel. During our tests, heavy traffic saw numbers drop to around 7 kmpl. However, stick to the highway speed limits, and the engine sits comfortably below 2,000 rpm, easily returning double-digit figures.

BMW has not skimped on safety, outfitting the Z4 with a strong shell and plenty of active safety equipment to keep its occupants secure.

Passive Safety and Crash Protection

The Z4 has four airbags, which are standard for a two-seater convertible. The reinforced A-pillars and high-strength steel roll hoops behind the headrests are strong enough to withstand an unlikely rollover. The doors shut with a reassuring thud, showing how rigid the chassis is, despite the car not having a fixed metal roof.

Active Safety and Stability Systems

Electronic stability control, traction control, and cornering brake control are standard across the range. The M Sport differential helps effectively manage power delivery to the rear wheels, reducing the chances of snap oversteer. You also get a high-quality reverse camera and front and rear parking sensors, which are vital given the car's long bonnet and low seating position. Even though the car has some useful ADAS features, it does not quite market the safety suite as being available.

Safety Verdict

While Euro NCAP tested the previous iteration and gave it a five-star rating, the current Z4 feels incredibly robust on the road as well. Some Level 2 ADAS applications could have made it better, like adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist. Still, the fundamental mechanical grip and active safety nets provide genuine peace of mind when pushing the car's limits.

The technology packed inside this drop-top is clever and focuses on giving control directly to the driver without distractions. You get a setup that perfectly balances modern digital screens with physical buttons. The layout feels buyer-focused, meaning you do not have to look into complex menus to change the fan speed while on the move.

Infotainment and Interface

  • The dashboard gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen, which is very easy to use and quick to respond.
  • It also has a fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster that changes its look based on the drive modes you select.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make sure that you have a smooth connection for your phone.
  • The Harman Kardon surround sound system with 12 speakers is loud and clear, even with the roof down.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features

  • The M Sport seats for the driver and passenger offer electric adjustment with memory functions, providing a firm hold during fast turns.
  • A two-zone automatic climate control keeps the cabin cosy regardless of the weather outside.
  • The classic soft-top roof can be folded away electrically in just ten seconds.

Girish observes,

“The cabin is more plush, feels wider, and benefits from the infinite headroom of a roadster.”

Roadsters are rarely known for their cargo-carrying skills, but this German convertible does a decent job for a weekend trip. The boot space measures 281 litres, which remains the same whether the soft-top is up or folded down. The shape of the boot is relatively deep and wide, meaning you can easily fit two standard cabin-sized trolley bags along with a couple of soft bags. The loading lip is slightly high, but you can securely pack enough luggage for a short holiday.

Driving the Z4 is an absolute joy. It has an Adaptive M suspension setup that delivers a fine balance between sharp handling and everyday comfort.

City Driving

The steering is light at low speeds inside the city, and the eight-speed automatic gearbox shifts smoothly. The suspension absorbs most bumps well, though you still have to be careful over larger potholes because of the low 114–117 mm ground clearance. The visibility is good with the roof down, but with the top up, the rear view gets quite tight.

Highway Driving

Out on the open road, the car stays stable and planted at high speeds, showing off its solid German build. The body shell can withstand endless thrust, and taking corners feels confident and secure, as the car stays glued to the gravel. The grip levels of its tyres are also great, and body roll is tightly controlled.

Girish mentions,

“This is the 'clinical' sibling, not the Toyota. It is precise, powerful, and relaxed.”

The BMW Z4 in India is entirely about the mighty 3.0-litre engine. There aren’t any major differences between the variants; they generally have different transmission setups, that’s it. Of course, some other subtle changes are available, such as different colours or leatherette seats.

Purists who want an engaging, raw driving experience

The Essentials That You Don’t Get

  • Ventilated seats, which are non-negotiable for hot Indian summers
  • Some Level 2 ADAS features, like adaptive cruise control

Choosing the right model depends on how much you value taking complete control of the gears versus enjoying a laid-back cruise. Both models pack the exact same performance punch, so your decision boils down to your driving style.

Best for Daily Usability: Z4 M40i Automatic

If you want a comfortable convertible that can tackle city traffic smoothly and still be fast on a weekend trip, the standard automatic is the clear winner. The eight-speed transmission is smart, shifts quickly, and makes the car very easy to live with every single day.

Best for Pure Driving Enthusiasts: Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Manual

If you enjoy the mechanical feel of shifting gears and want a more lively, connected experience, the Pure Impulse edition is the one to get. Finding a six-speed manual in a modern six-cylinder sports car is rare, making this variant a true gem for enthusiasts.

The premium convertible market in India is quite small, but the competition is tough. Buyers looking for an open-top experience have a few options here, ranging from an electric sports car to larger, more luxurious four-seater drop-tops.

The recently launched MG Cyberster is a fully electric alternative at a much lower price. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet focuses heavily on comfort and space. Against them, the BMW Z4 competes with its superior riding dynamics and a wider price bracket.

Which Luxury Roadster Should You Choose?

  • Choose the BMW Z4 if you want a true driver’s car with strong handling, a great-sounding engine, and a classic two-seater layout.
  • Choose the MG Cyberster if you want to switch to electric power, desire head-turning looks with scissor doors, and want a lot of speed for less money.
  • Choose the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet if you prefer a softer ride, and prioritise a fancy interior over raw performance.

Pros

  • Strong six-cylinder engine
  • Available with a six-speed manual gearbox
  • Quick-folding soft-top roof
  • Well-balanced ride and handling

Cons

  • Ground clearance of 114 mm is very low
  • Missing a few premium features, like ventilated seats
  • The cabin feels tight for taller individuals
  • Rearward visibility is poor with the roof up

Verdict

Being one of the last true sports roadsters you can buy today, the BMW Z4 does not try to be an oversized luxury cruiser or an overly complex technology showcase. Instead, it keeps its fundamentals simple: a powerful engine at the front, drive going to the rear wheels, and an open roof above your head.

Moreover, the Pure Impulse Edition’s six-speed manual proves that the brand still cares about the pure joy of driving. It has that raw and engaging feel that is rarely experienced in the modern car market today, and the automatic variant is still a superb choice for daily driving. If you’re browsing the market for a stylish, fast, and good-looking sports car, this machine is definitely worth your attention before such engines disappear forever.

Girish summarises the BMW Z4 like this,

“Choose this car if you want precision, no-nonsense performance, and a premium open-top experience.”
