What's New?

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is a completely reimagined version of the iconic adventure motorcycle. With its robust design, advanced features, and versatile performance, it takes the Himalayan legacy to new heights. Designed to handle challenging terrains and extended journeys, the new Himalayan is set to redefine adventure touring, not just in India but globally.

One of the standout features of the Himalayan 450 is its all-new engine. Named the Sherpa 450, this liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine offers a significant step up in performance. With nearly 40 bhp of power and 40 Nm of torque, the engine provides impressive acceleration and power delivery, making it a joy to ride in a variety of conditions. The Sherpa 450’s shorter stroke and high-revving nature are a departure from Royal Enfield’s traditional long-stroke engines. This new character delivers smoother power across a wide rev range, ensuring spirited performance on highways, winding roads, and rough trails alike.

The Himalayan 450’s design reflects a perfect blend of ruggedness and modernity. While it retains the signature silhouette of its predecessor, the bike now feels sleeker and more refined. The fuel tank has been redesigned for better ergonomics and holds more fuel to extend its range. With all-LED lighting and a modern circular TFT display, which integrates smartphone connectivity and Google Maps navigation, the Himalayan balances its adventurous essence with contemporary features. The adjustable seat height ensures comfort for a wide range of riders, making it more accessible without compromising on capability.

Built to conquer the toughest terrains, the Himalayan 450 excels off-road. Its suspension setup, featuring Showa USD front forks and a rear monoshock, ensures excellent stability and control over rocky paths and rough surfaces. Whether crossing a stream, tackling steep inclines, or cruising on loose gravel, the Himalayan provides a confident and composed ride. The high ground clearance and grippy dual-purpose tyres add to its off-road prowess, making it a versatile companion for riders who love to explore beyond the beaten path.

On paved roads, the Himalayan 450 surprises with its agility and stability. Despite being slightly heavier and longer than its predecessor, the bike handles exceptionally well. Whether navigating tight corners on mountain roads or cruising on highways, it delivers a balanced and enjoyable riding experience. The braking system, with larger rotors and well-modulated ABS, offers reliable stopping power, adding to the bike’s confidence-inspiring dynamics.

The Himalayan 450 introduces new riding modes—Eco and Performance. While Eco mode prioritizes fuel efficiency, Performance mode unleashes the bike’s full potential, making it ideal for spirited rides. The addition of ride-by-wire technology ensures crisp throttle response, enhancing the overall riding experience.

The Himalayan 450 is expected to be priced competitively, making it an attractive option for adventure enthusiasts. With its advanced features, impressive performance, and rugged design, it not only competes with other bikes in its category but also challenges more expensive middleweight adventure motorcycles.

In essence, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 represents a leap forward for the brand. It is no longer just an entry-level adventure bike; it is a well-rounded machine capable of excelling in diverse conditions. Whether tackling treacherous trails or embarking on long highway journeys, the Himalayan 450 offers a versatile and exciting riding experience. It is a perfect choice for those seeking to explore the world on two wheels, blending adventure, comfort, and modern technology in one capable package.

Verdict

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 builds on the strengths of its predecessor while introducing significant improvements in performance and features. Its off-road prowess, balanced handling, and refined engine make it a fantastic choice for adventure enthusiasts. Though minor issues like tire grip and vibrations persist, the Himalayan 450 remains one of the best adventure motorcycles available under Rs. 3 lakh, offering both versatility and enjoyable riding experiences.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan has always been one of the most beloved adventure motorcycles in the Indian market, known for its off-road capabilities and rugged design. With the launch of the new-generation Himalayan, Royal Enfield has significantly improved the overall package, addressing many of the shortcomings of the older model. Now equipped with the Sherpa 450 engine and packed with modern features, the Himalayan is poised to continue its reign as one of the most accessible and capable adventure motorcycles under ₹3 lakh.

The new Himalayan is designed for riders who seek adventure both on and off the road, offering an impressive blend of comfort, performance, and capability. With prices ranging between ₹2.69 lakh and ₹2.84 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on the color options, the Himalayan finds itself competing with bikes like the KTM 390 Adventure, BMW G 310 GS, and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X.

The design of the new Himalayan carries forward the same rugged, purposeful aesthetic that fans of the older model loved. The motorcycle has a big-bike presence, thanks to its tall stance, high ground clearance, and muscular bodywork. The Slate Poppy Blue color scheme on the test bike further enhances its visual appeal, making it stand out on the road.

At first glance, the Himalayan's design is all about practicality and function. The front end features a large round headlight, with the LED indicators integrated into the taillight at the rear, offering a unique lighting signature, especially in low-light conditions. The tank’s metal bars are a nod to the older Himalayan, providing protection in case of a fall. The side profile is dominated by the high-set exhaust and long-travel suspension, further emphasizing the Himalayan’s off-road DNA.

royal enfield himalayan 450 Front View

The overall fit and finish on the new Himalayan is notably better than its predecessor. The quality of materials used is improved, giving it a more premium feel. However, the mirrors remain a weak point, as they are not as adjustable as one would expect, which can be frustrating on long rides.

The star of the new Royal Enfield Himalayan is undoubtedly the Sherpa 450 engine. This new engine is a revelation, providing the Himalayan with the power it always needed. Producing 27.2 bhp and 33 Nm of torque, the engine offers ample grunt for both on-road and off-road adventures.

The 450cc single-cylinder engine is the most technologically advanced motor that Royal Enfield has produced, and it delivers a balanced performance. The engine can easily maintain speeds of 70-80 km/h on highways, but if you feel the need for speed, it can comfortably cruise at 100-110 km/h all day long. What stands out the most is the tractability of the engine—you can ride in 4th gear at 40 km/h and still accelerate to triple-digit speeds without needing to downshift.

royal enfield himalayan 450 Engine

The engine feels a bit lazy at lower RPMs, especially below 3500 RPM, but once the revs climb, there’s a surge of torque that keeps things lively. Overtaking on highways requires some planning, but it’s never a hassle, especially once you get used to the engine’s characteristics.

The gearbox is another highlight of the new Himalayan. Gear shifts are buttery smooth, and the clutch action is light, making it easy to ride in city traffic. While there are some vibrations at the higher end of the rev range, they are not intrusive enough to detract from the overall riding experience.

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan impresses with its off-road capabilities. With 200 mm of suspension travel at both ends and 230 mm of ground clearance, the Himalayan is more than capable of tackling rough terrain, rocks, bumps, and potholes with ease. The low center of gravity and wide handlebar provide excellent balance and control, even when the bike is fully loaded with gear. Riding the Himalayan off-road is confidence-inspiring, and despite its 196 kg weight, the bike feels surprisingly agile once it’s on the move.

The suspension setup is on the firmer side, but it does a great job of absorbing undulations on the road. The 21-inch front wheel and 18-inch rear wheel provide stability over uneven surfaces, making the Himalayan a solid choice for long-distance touring. On the road, the Himalayan feels planted and stable at higher speeds. Despite its long wheelbase, the bike handles corners fairly well, though it takes some persuasion to change direction quickly due to its size.

royal enfield himalayan 450 Riding

The Ceat tires offer good grip on paved roads, but off-road performance could be better, as the tires tend to lose traction in loose gravel or mud. For serious off-road enthusiasts, upgrading the tires may be a consideration.

royal enfield himalayan 450 Turning

The braking system on the new Himalayan is also improved, with a 320 mm disc up front and a 270 mm disc at the rear, offering strong bite and progression. The ABS is switchable at the rear, which is particularly useful when riding off-road.

Royal Enfield has placed a significant emphasis on ergonomics in the new Himalayan. The seat height of 825 mm is approachable for most riders, and the seat itself is wide and well-padded, making it comfortable for long-distance rides. The riding position is upright and neutral, with the wide handlebars providing good leverage for off-road riding. Even when standing on the pegs, the Himalayan feels comfortable and natural, a crucial factor for adventure touring.

royal enfield himalayan 450 Comfort

The pillions seat is also quite spacious, though it could benefit from more cushioning for added comfort on longer rides. The bike’s 17-liter fuel tank offers a range of about 420-450 kilometers, depending on the riding conditions, which is more than enough for most touring needs.

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is now loaded with more modern features than ever before. The highlight is the 4-inch circular TFT display that not only shows essential information like speed, fuel level, and trip meters but also integrates Google Maps mirroring via the Royal Enfield app. This feature is extremely useful for navigation, though it tends to drain your phone’s battery quite quickly.

The Himalayan also features ride-by-wire technology, which allows for two riding modes: Power and Eco. Power mode delivers the full performance of the engine, while Eco mode reduces the power delivery in the first four gears to conserve fuel, making it ideal for city commutes.

Additionally, the bike comes with switchable ABS at the rear, a USB charging port on the handlebar, and LED lighting at both ends. The quality of the TFT screen is excellent, and the fit and finish of the bike are among the best seen on any Royal Enfield motorcycle to date.

During our test, the new Royal Enfield Himalayan delivered a fuel efficiency of 27 kmpl, which is very close to the claimed figure of 28.15 kmpl. With its 17-liter fuel tank, riders can expect a range of around 420-450 km on a full tank, making it an ideal motorcycle for long-distance touring.

Priced between ₹2.69 lakh and ₹2.84 lakh, the new Royal Enfield Himalayan offers excellent value for money, especially considering its off-road prowess, advanced features, and refined performance. Compared to its rivals like the KTM 390 Adventure and BMW G 310 GS, the Himalayan is significantly more affordable while still offering competitive features and a superior off-road experience. For riders who prioritize adventure touring but don’t want to break the bank, the Himalayan is a clear winner.

royal enfield himalayan 450

Royal Enfield’s extensive service network across India ensures that Himalayan owners will have no trouble accessing maintenance and repairs. The company’s focus on improving reliability and providing affordable spare parts further enhances the overall ownership experience

The Royal Enfield Himalayan’s closest competitors include the KTM 390 Adventure, BMW G 310 GS, and the Triumph Scrambler 400 X. While the KTM offers more power and the BMW offers better on-road handling, the Himalayan shines in off-road capability and overall versatility. Its pricing also undercuts both rivals, making it an attractive option for adventure enthusiasts on a budget.

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan is a well-rounded adventure motorcycle that offers a superb mix of on-road and off-road performance. It is versatile, feature-packed, and delivers excellent value for money. Whether you’re commuting in the city, touring across the country, or tackling challenging off-road trails, the Himalayan feels capable and reliable. With its refined engine, improved ergonomics, and rugged design, the new Himalayan is easily one of the best adventure motorcycles available under ₹3 lakh. If you're looking for a motorcycle that can do it all, the new Himalayan might just be all the bike you ever need
