  • What's New on Audi Q5?

Audi India has launched the 2021 Q5 facelift in India at a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 60.05 lakh for the Premium Plus variant, going up to Rs 67.05 lakh for the range-topping Technology variant (both ex-showroom, India). The new Audi Q5 facelift will be offered in India as a completely knocked down (CKD) unit and will be assembled locally at its parent company's - VW Group's Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) plant in Aurangabad. The Audi Q5 is coming back to India after a hiatus of over 18 months since the pre-facelift model was discontinued in April 2020.

The 2021 Audi Q5 facelift looks a bit sharper and bolder than its predecessor and majority of updates are centred on its face. The new larger single-frame grille with chrome borders and vertical slats builds up on its muscular front end and there is a chunkier silver skid plate as well. The SUV also gets larger foglamp housings, silver roof rails and side skirts, along with revised full-LED headlights and new LED daytime running lamps (DRLs). The SUV also gets new 19-inch 5 double-spoke star style alloy wheels, along with brand new LED taillights at the rear.

On the inside, the Q5 gets an updated cabin and the overall layout is quite similar to what we have seen on some of its newer models like the updated A4 facelift. There are also new seats and upholstery, along with a new steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control and plenty of storage options. Audi has also equipped the Q5 with the third-generation Modular Infotainment Platform or MIB 3. The system is accessed through a new 10.1-inch display, which is standard and the illustrated features list includes - wireless phone charger, Audi Park Assist, Comfort key with sensor-controlled boot-lid operation, Audi Exclusive Inlays in Black Piano Lacquer, Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus and Bang & Olufsen premium 3D sound system.

Under the hood, there is the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder BS6 45 TFSI petrol engine that belts out 247 bhp at 5000 - 6000 rpm and 370 Nm of peak torque at 1600 - 4300 rpm. The engine is coupled with a 12-volt mild-hybrid system with brake energy recuperation and the powertrain comes mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic automatic dual-clutch transmission. The Quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system is also standard on the new Audi Q5 and it takes 6.3 seconds to do the 0-100 kmph sprint, in-turn clocking a top-speed of 237 kmph. In our market, the Audi Q5 will continue rivalling the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Volvo XC60, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and the Lexus NX300h.

car&bike Expert Take

“The Audi Q5 is a balanced mid-size luxury SUV that hits most of the notes right for Indian buyers. It has a refined petrol engine, an easy-to-use cabin, and excellent ride quality. While the competition has gone forward with newer generations, the current Q5 still holds its ground well.”

The Audi Q5 has been a familiar sight on Indian roads for years. This current version arrived as a facelift, bringing much-needed updates after a long pause, and Audi continues to assemble the SUV locally at its Aurangabad plant. By avoiding the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route, the brand aptly keeps the car’s pricing competitive against strong rivals like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

In 2026, buyers get a single 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine choice. You can choose between two main trims, which are the Premium Plus and Technology. Audi also recently introduced a Signature Edition to keep the lineup fresh, but things are about to get more interesting from beyond here. A 48V mild-hybrid system will be landing on Indian showroom floors soon, along with a more modern design.

Regarding the available variant, Shams Raza Naqvi had taken some time to go through its core fundamentals, from its specifications on paper to its real-world performance. We have added his insights into this review as well, to help you decide whether you should give the Audi Q5 a look or not.

Under the bonnet, the Q5 relies on a tried and tested powertrain. It does not try to scare you with its raw power, but rather delivers it smoothly, keeping the ride experience convenient for both novices and established drivers.

Driving Experience: Real World

The Q5 feels eager to get moving, and it also masks its size well once it starts rolling on the road.

City Driving

In everyday traffic, the 2.0-litre engine feels relaxed. It gives you the required power from as low as 1,600 rpm, and this means you do not have to work the gearbox hard to close gaps in traffic. Meanwhile, the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission shifts smoothly.

According to Shams,

“There’s no perceptible lag; the engine is refined and highly responsive.”

Highway Driving

Out on the open road, the Q5 stretches its legs comfortably. The engine remains quiet even when you push the speeds higher, and most Quick overtakes are easy, thanks to the quick-shifting gearbox. The SUV stays planted and confident around sweeping bends, while engine noise is kept outside the cabin effectively.

The word ‘restraint’ came first to mind when we took a closer look at the Audi Q5’s exterior design. It avoids overly sharp creases and focuses on its classic proportions instead.

Dimensions Comparison

DimensionAudi Q5BMW X3Mercedes-Benz GLC
Length4,682 mm4,755 mm4,716 mm
Width1,893 mm1,920 mm1,890 mm
Height1,653–1,662 mm1,660–1,676 mm1,640 mm
Wheelbase2,819–2,827 mm2,865 mm2,888 mm

It’s shorter in length than both the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC, ending at 4,682 mm. The wheelbase is also relatively shorter in the Audi Q5.

Audi has given the SUV enough visual updates to keep it fresh. The current styling works best for buyers who want a classy road presence.

Front Profile

  • The single-frame grille is flatter and wider than before.
  • The new LED headlamps are paired with sleek daytime running lights.
  • Silver skid plates add a small amount of rugged touch to the curvy bumper.

Side Profile

  • The overall silhouette is clean and distinctly Audi, seen across most of their offerings.
  • You get 19-inch double-spoke star-design alloy wheels on the Technology trim.
  • Aluminium roof rails and neat side skirts break the rest of the visual bulk.

Rear Profile

  • There are LED combination lamps showing the brand's signature dynamic turn indicators.
  • A redesigned tailgate gives the back end a bit more character than it ever did before.
  • Nicely integrated exhaust tips and bulky skid plates finish the car’s overall look.

You are greeted by a highly logical layout inside the Audi Q5. The German manufacturer’s engineers did not compromise on material quality and comfort for the car.

Cabin Layout and Quality

The dashboard avoids unnecessary clutter, as the buttons are placed exactly where you expect them to be. Audi offers different upholstery options, but the black and tan mix looks particularly nice to us.

As Shams mentions,

“The touch of piano black trim throughout the cabin makes it feel quite premium.”

Meanwhile, the 10.1-inch touchscreen sits neatly on top of the dash, with the famous Audi Virtual Cockpit as enjoyable to use as ever.

Seating Comfort

Front Row

Both front seats get power adjustments for ease of use. The cushioning is firm but supportive enough for long drives, and visibility out the front is great. You also get plenty of storage spaces around the centre console, and these really come in handy.

Second Row

The rear bench is comfortable and supportive. Three adults can fit in here, though the floor tunnel eats up the middle passenger's legroom. As for headroom and knee room, the given space is generous for average-sized adults.

Features That Improve Daily Use

  • A 10.1-inch multimedia interface with smartphone connectivity
  • The clear and customisable Audi Virtual Cockpit
  • A crisp multi-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • A large panoramic sunroof that brightens the cabin
  • Ambient lighting with 30 colour options
  • A wireless charger, alongside Type-A and Type-C USB ports

Audi has kept the pricing somewhat aggressive to stay relevant, and much of the car’s overall value is balanced out by the fact that it’s assembled on home soil. While the exact prices are difficult to pinpoint, the base variant is no doubt an attractive entry point for the price tag it comes with.

Ex-Showroom Prices (India)

VariantEngine & TransmissionEx-Showroom Price

Signature Edition2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed automaticRs. 69.86 Lakh
Technology2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed automaticRs. 70.02–70.73 Lakh

Note: There’s another one besides the three main trims: a ‘Bold’ edition, which is technically another limited-units variant of the Technology trim, besides the Signature Edition. It costs around Rs. 69.80 lakh.

Buying a heavy, petrol-powered luxury SUV usually means frequent fuel stops, and things are no different for the Audi Q5. In cities, expect the mileage to drop as low as single digits, while if ridden efficiently on the highways, those numbers may see a slight bump.

Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing

Engine & TransmissionARAI-Claimed MileageCity Mileage (Real-World)Highway Mileage (Real-World)
2.0-Litre Petrol Automatic (AWD)13.47 kmpl8–10 kmpl11–13 kmpl

In our tests, city driving returned numbers in the single digits. The constant jostling in traffic takes a toll on efficiency, but once the roads open up, the car easily crosses the 11 kmpl mark.

Audi rarely cuts corners when it comes to keeping passengers safe, so it’s expected that the Q5 was going to pack a solid list of safety features as standard.

Passive Safety and Crash Protection

The SUV boasts eight airbags, some of them providing rear-side protection. The body shell is strong as well, and you get ISOFIX child seat mounts for securing younger passengers. Euro NCAP previously awarded the Q5 a full five-star safety rating.

Active Safety and Stability Systems

The standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system constantly monitors the car’s traction. It quickly sends power to the wheels with the most grip. The car also features electronic stability control and hill hold assist, while a handy park assist feature helps you steer into tight spots. But even for a car that goes past Rs. 50 lakh, it misses out on a full suite of Level 2 ADAS features that rivals usually offer.

Safety Verdict

The lack of advanced driver aids might bother some buyers, but the core safety net is quite strong in the vehicle. Most importantly, it has some confident braking capabilities, too.

Audi’s layout brings fresh ideas into the car’s interior, aiming to simplify the daily driving experience. The screens look great, and the whole system responds quickly to touch inputs.

Infotainment and Interface

  • A 10.1-inch touchscreen sits at the centre of the dash.
  • The driver also gets a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, something we know as the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus.
  • The Bang & Olufsen sound system ensures loud, clear audio performance across all seats.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features

  • The cabin uses sustainable materials like Dinamica microfiber, giving a soft and rich feel.
  • Three-zone climate control is there to keep the temperature steady across both rows.
  • There are also ventilated front seats and a standard, large panoramic sunroof.

You get a very usable 520 litres of boot space in the back. The loading lip sits at a decent height, making it easy to slide heavy bags inside. A great new touch we need to point out here is the rear bench, which now gets a slide and tilt function. If you need more room for luggage, sliding the seats forward helps balance passenger comfort with cargo capacity. Fold the rear seats down by 40:20:40, and the space further unlocks 1,440 litres; quite a lot.

Underneath the fresh styling, the SUV’s suspension is highly sorted, managing to deliver a calm and quiet ride over rough patches.

Shams specifies,

“Because it’s wide and not overly tall, the driving dynamics are excellent.”

City Driving

Around town, the steering is light and nimble, making U-turns and tight parking spots fuss-free. There is no lag in the lower revs, meaning you can conveniently cut through corners and maintain bumper-to-bumper distance in heavy traffic. All the trims available in India currently get a standard, steel-sprung suspension that filters out the nastiest bumps.

Highway Driving

Out where the congested traffic ends, the 2.0-litre petrol engine stretches its legs. With 370 Nm of torque, it gathers speed with steady, confident pushes as you keep pushing the gas pedal down to the floor. The seven-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly during the process, without any annoying jerks.

Shams observes,

“You can also throw this car into corners with a lot of confidence.”

True, because body roll is kept well in check while doing that. As for the suspension, it irons out uneven expansion joints, making long road trips incredibly relaxing.

There are three (or four, if you keep the ‘Bold’ edition in mind) variants available in the Indian market right now. They are all slightly different from each other, looks and features-wise, intentionally made so by Audi to widen the preference gap for buyers.

The Essentials That You Don’t Get

  • A punchy diesel engine option
  • Physical buttons for the climate control system
  • Customisable layouts for the digital dials

The choice here mostly circles back to how much technology you want inside the cabin.

Best for Daily Driving: Premium Plus

If you want a comfortable luxury SUV for the daily office run, this variant offers plenty. You get the large infotainment screen and the soft interior materials without paying the highest premium.

Best for Tech and Safety: Technology

This trim boasts a superb audio setup. It is the obvious pick if you do a lot of highway driving and your family loves listening to music while out on that weekend trip.

Best for Styling: Bold Edition

If you want your SUV to stand out in a crowd, the darker styling cues and special wheels on this trim give it an edgy, aggressive stance on the road.

The luxury mid-size SUV market remains constantly on a high roll, with some pretty capable competitors often making the headlines in this segment. The BMW X3 leans more towards driving enthusiasts and still offers a strong diesel option. The Mercedes-Benz GLC, meanwhile, focuses on class-leading comfort. But the Q5 sits right in between, offering ride comfort and fresh technology in the same setup.

As Shams mentions,

“Almost half of Audi’s sales in India have come from the Q range, making the Q5 a vital product for regaining lost ground.”

Mercedes-Benz GLC2.0-Litre Petrol / Diesel192–258 bhp / 400–440 NmClassy interior, high-end comfortRs. 75.50 Lakh

Which Mid-Size Luxury SUV Should You Choose?

  • Choose the Audi Q5 if you want a highly digital cabin, relatively powerful performance, and a calm, quiet ride most of the time.
  • Choose the BMW X3 if driving dynamics and a strong diesel engine are your top priorities. But, there’s also a petrol engine available, if you’d prefer.
  • Choose the Mercedes-Benz GLC if you want the best-looking interior between the three cars, and that plush, luxurious badge.

Pros

  • Clean and fast Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus
  • Highly comfortable ride over bad roads
  • Some exciting variants to choose from

Cons

  • Does not have physical climate control buttons
  • No diesel engine option available
  • Poor rear camera quality

Verdict

The current edition of the Audi Q5 is still the mid-life facelift of the second-generation model that touched Indian showrooms in 2021. It keeps most of the core elements alive, such as the standard Quattro all-wheel-drive, the Matrix LED lights, and several other sharp features.

But things are about to get more interesting for this vehicle, with the imminent launch of the 2026 variant. This one will bring with it a new mild-hybrid system, which will make your city commutes better in terms of fuel efficiency. But, regardless of whether you want to wait for the new update or settle for the former, you can’t go wrong by choosing either. The Audi Q5 has always been known for its ability to absorb bumps softly while keeping you undisturbed inside the cabin, and that convenience from the car won’t be leaving anytime soon.
