Bajaj Pulsar 180 Expert Review

Introduction

In 2019, Bajaj discontinued the Bajaj Pulsar 180 but again relaunched the same in 2021 that does not come cladded in a semi-faired coat, and instead with an outdoorsy appeal. It is likely that this 2021 model has replaced the previous one but continues to feature the same hardware and engine. Besides, the new Bajaj Pulsar 180 costs almost Rs 10,000 less than the previous 180F. The naked roadster has weaker power figures than the 2019 180F. Most of the other modifications are done in the outer body of the bike, making the appearance strikingly different from that of the 2019 180F. The lack of additional body panels also means that the new 180 is lighter.

How is the design?

Unlike the discontinued semi-faired 180F, the new Bajaj Pulsar 180 is a street naked commuter devoid of the additional panels and bodyworks. The new aerodynamic Pulsar 180 has been relaunched with a familiar appearance and sporty decals. It uses the very same LED tail-lamp and the conventional halogen headlamp, and the digi-analogue console has been retained as well. It further comes with split seats, split grab rails at the rear, and alloy wheels painted black. The stylish accents and the gloss finish contribute to its vibrant looks. Most of the body panels found in the debut 2019 model are missing in this naked commuter, which also means that it is 10kg lighter than the discontinued debutant. It comes in four colours and five variants. The dual colour tone gives it a premium touch and the hint of the secondary colour on the black alloy wheels makes the bike look a little more stunning.

How is the performance?

The new Bajaj Pulsar 180 is powered by an air-cooled, single cylinder, 178.6cc engine unit paired with a 5-speed gearbox. The engine generates 17 hp of maximum power at 8500 rpm, and 14.2 Nm of peak torque at 6500 rpm. The power figures produced by the engine are less than the previous discontinued model by 0.2 hp and 0.3 Nm respectively. This bike can achieve a top speed of 122 kmph and it has a ground clearance of 165mm. The braking duties are carried by disc brakes at both ends and supported with a single channel ABS. The kerb weight is 10kg less than the previous model at 145 kg. The suspension duties of the bike are handled by monoshock at the rear and telescopic fork at the front. This bike is unmatchable in performance among the competing bikes of the same class. In terms of mileage, it offers 25% more fuel economy than the other bikes competing in the same segment, such as Honda CB 200.

How does the Bajaj Pulsar 180 ride?

The new Bajaj Pulsar 180 offers a thrilling and aggressive on-road feel and most importantly the brakes, suspensions and the safety elements make it easier to ride through city traffic. The seamless suspension duties of the bike reduce any impact coming from potholes and speed breakers. In addition, the tubeless tyre at the front and rear along with the 5-spoke alloy wheels perfectly cope with the raw power generated by the bike. The single-channel ABS enhances the braking performance of the bike on almost any terrain. This bike offers a seamless riding experience and the improved ride quality can be sensed throughout.

How comfortable is the Bajaj Pulsar 180?

The new Bajaj Pulsar 180 comes with a counter split seat made from premium material for offering additional stability and comfort throughout the ride. The improved suspension system and braking performance reduced sudden impact coming from rough and uneven terrains. The tubeless tyres keep the bike stable and well-planted on the ground, and help it move straight along the intended line. The riding posture is upright and does not keep your body position hunched over the fuel tank in an uncomfortable and aggressive position. This means, this bike provides superb comfortability even on long hauls. You can ride it for several hours at a stretch without getting a back pain.

How's the tech?

The new Bajaj Pulsar 180 is powered by an air-cooled, single cylinder, 178.6cc engine unit paired with a 5-speed gearbox. The engine generates 17 hp of maximum power at 8500 rpm, and 14.2 Nm of peak torque at 6500 rpm. This self-starting machine comes with an analogue tachometer, digital trip metre and digital speedometer along with indicators for low battery, low oil, gear position and fuel warning. It also has a pass light and an engine-kill switch. The electricals include halogen headlamps, 12v battery, LED taillight, bulb-turn signals and two pilot lamps.

How's the mileage of the Bajaj Pulsar 180?

ARAI has claimed that the new Bajaj Pulsar 180 gives a total mileage of 45 kmpl. However, in city traffic you can achieve a maximum of 43 kmpl.

Is the Bajaj Pulsar 180 good value for money?

The new Bajaj Pulsar 180 is worth it. It is unmatchable in terms of performance and serves its purpose of commuting through city traffic pretty well. The sporty look with the dual-colour bodywork contributes to the awesome road presence of the bike. Although the power figures have been reduced to some extent, it is least felt on the road. This bike has a pretty good fuel economy and it is more affordable than the other bikes competing in the same segment.

How is the after sales service?

Bajaj is known for its excellent after sales services and assistance. However, Bajaj offers only 3 free services compared to Honda which offers 5 free services for the competing bike, Honda Hornet 2.0. The 1st service is scheduled after 1 month or 500 km of ride, the 2nd one after 8 months or 4500 km of ride and the 3rd one after 12 months or after 9500 km of ride.

Which motorbikes compete in this segment?

The other motorbikes that are competing in the same segment of commuting bikes as the Bajaj Pulsar 180 are TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, Hero XPulse 200T, Bajaj Pulsar NS160, Honda Unicorn, Bajaj Pulsar 150 and Honda Hornet 2.0.

Verdict (Value for money)

This bike is a very good value for money in terms of performance, comfort and fuel economy. This bike is a great commuting partner and can be taken on long hauls as well.

  • Easy handling
  • Sporty look and spare parts are easily available.

Bajaj Pulsar 180 Discontinued In India; Replaced By Pulsar 180F
Motorcycle maker Bajaj Auto has pulled the plug on the Pulsar 180 in India. The popular selling motorcycle for the manufacturer has now been replaced by the Bajaj Pulsar 180F, which uses the same underpinnings as the standard Pulsar 180, but gets the semi-fairing from its older sibling - the Pulsar 220F. While Bajaj is yet to confirm the development, dealerships in Mumbai, Delhi and Pune have stated that the motorcycle has been discontinued and will only be available till stocks last. Meanwhile, the Pulsar 180F was introduced earlier this year and replaces the standard Pulsar 180 in the company's stable. The Pulsar 180F is priced at Rs. 86,490 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

2019 Bajaj Pulsar 180F Details Leaked; Launch Soon
ajaj Auto has been updating its Pulsar range since late last year with cosmetic tweaks and the mandatory addition of ABS. The latest model to join the line-up is the 2019 Bajaj Pulsar 180F as per the leaked images, which is the new semi-faired motorcycle from the manufacturer. The source suggests that the new Pulsar 180F is priced at Rs. 86,500 (ex-showroom), which makes it about Rs. 2500 more expensive than the naked version. As most of you will recognise it, the Pulsar 180F is essentially the Pulsar 180 with the 220F bodykit. The update brings more value to the Pulsar 180, further differentiating it from the Pulsar 150 that recently received the update of twin-disc brakes along with new colour options and the entry-level Classic variant. Bajaj though is yet to officially announce the new model, but we expect the launch in the coming weeks.
