Expert Review on Citroen Aircross X
car&bike Expert Take
“As a complete family car, the Citroen Aircross X is an interesting package loaded with all the required, practical elements. Some cost-cutting is visible with this car, but not so much as to compromise everyday use.”
The Aircross X was initially launched in 2023, and even though the original model got most of the basics right, it did not quite have the flair needed to challenge the toughest rivals in its segment. Things changed with the 2025 update, as the Citroen Aircross X reintroduced itself with a much more premium feel, loading up its cabin with essential features like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a high-quality touchscreen.
The latest model of this French offering sits with a bold profile on the road today. It’s a versatile vehicle, giving buyers the option of choosing either a five-seater or a seven-seater, while the car’s overall price does not fluctuate either; it hovers around that of a smaller crossover. Honestly, a diesel engine or factory-fitted CNG would have made things more interesting, but nevertheless, the complete value that this vehicle promises right out of the showroom floor is hard to ignore.
Seshan Vijayraghvan from the car&bike team had checked out the latest update, and his experience about the car has been shared via our YouTube channel. We have also added some of his thoughts here to add more transparency regarding our overall perspective on the Citroen Aircross X.
Buyers can choose between a naturally aspirated motor and a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine in this car, and clearly, the turbo unit is the more powerful one. It is a three-cylinder motor that churns out 108 bhp and 205 Nm of torque in the six-speed automatic trim. The manual transmission delivers slightly less torque at 190 Nm, but both setups can handle daily commutes without any fuss.
Engine Specifications
Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 1.2-Litre Naturally Aspirated Petrol | 80-82 bhp | 115 Nm | Five-speed manual | Front-wheel drive |
| 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol | 108.62 bhp | 190 Nm / 205 Nm | Six-speed manual / Six-speed automatic | Front-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
The engine tuning has been smartly delivered for different driving conditions, although it can sound a bit gruff when you push it way too hard on open patches of road.
According to Seshan,
“It feels peppy and eager. There is some turbo lag at the lower revs, but once it kicks in, power builds smoothly and you’ll hit triple-digit speeds in no time.”
City Driving
The 1.2-litre turbo petrol is easy to engage in heavy traffic. Its power delivery stays linear and rarely misses the throttle input, but as Seshan mentioned, slight turbo lag persists during slower moments, especially when below 1,700 rpm. However, the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly, keeping the riding experience stress-free most of the time. Under traffic, the engine remains relatively quiet.
Highway Driving
The SUV does not give up its stability at higher speeds either, thanks to the long wheelbase. Constantly cruising at 100 kmph does not force the engine to dial down its performance at all. But since the low-end turbo lag is there, you have to conduct most overtakes with caution.
The Citroen Aircross X has a ground clearance of 200 mm, which greatly helps on bad roads. The proportions here are good, and the SUV sits confidently atop its dual-tone alloy wheels.
However, you will also immediately figure out where the cost-cutting measures have been implemented most. For instance, the old-school flap-style door handles are still present and feel dated.
Dimensions Comparison
Dimension | Citroen Aircross X | Hyundai Creta | Kia Seltos |
Length | 4,323 mm | 4,330 mm | 4,460 mm |
Width | 1,796 mm | 1,790 mm | 1,830 mm |
Height | 1,669 mm | 1,635 mm | 1,635 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,671 mm | 2,610 mm | 2,690 mm |
The Citroen Aircross X has a smaller footprint than the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, maxing out at 4,323 mm. But interestingly, it’s taller than both at 1,796 mm.
The car manages to look solid from the outside without trying too hard, with the styling keeping that French quirkiness alive across its edges. The brand has mostly focused on the small details to make the overall visual stance better.
Front Profile
- The front face has been given premium LED lights that look sharp on the road.
- The bumper gets new fog lamps and a prominent grille that stands out in traffic.
- It looks aggressive from all angles, but sticks to a clean profile with no unnecessary chrome.
Side Profile
- The 200 mm ground clearance is high enough for traversing over rough terrain.
- Dual-tone alloy wheels add a fresh touch to the side stance in the latest update.
- However, the old-school flap-style door handles look quite out of place in this car.
Rear Profile
- The tailgate gets a new X badge to signal the most recent update it got.
- The taillights also have a modern signature that stands out immediately at night.
- A large rear bumper, similar to the previous models, completes the vehicle’s tough stance.

The 2025 update’s cabin feels more complete than the previous version, with several features being added to boost passenger convenience.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard uses better soft-touch materials now. The 10.25-inch sharp touchscreen takes centre stage and looks great. However, the hard plastic panels and basic cabin lights are still there, constantly reminding you why the car’s price tag is so inviting. The AC vents also feel a bit flimsy when you adjust them, and a sunroof is notably missing from the equipment list. Even though Citroen was generous with a 360-degree camera, the image quality from this one is average.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
The driver and co-driver get three levels of seat ventilation. These seats are wide and comfortable, and since they have a high position, visibility out the front window is clear and excellent.
Second Row
Passengers get roof-mounted AC vents in the second row to cool down quickly, while independent blower controls help keep the cabin comfortable. There are also two Type-C ports within this section.
Third Row
The third row is honestly not spacious enough for adults; it’s a place mostly for children, and that too for short trips. Cheap materials are also used on the inner walls here. But thankfully, you can remove these seats to increase the boot space if needed.

Features That Improve Daily Use
- A high-quality touchscreen that responds to your inputs quickly
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support
- Three levels of seat ventilation for the front passengers
- Roof-mounted rear AC vents that come with separate controls
- The CARA voice assistant helps with basic commands
Pricing is the main draw for this particular SUV, with buyers effectively getting a Creta-sized SUV for subcompact money. It starts at Rs. 8.29 lakh and goes up to Rs. 13.69 lakh, and this aggressive cost strategy undercuts most of its rivals in the current Indian market.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
You (5-Seater) | 1.2-Litre Petrol, Five-speed manual | Rs. 8.89 Lakh |
Plus (5-Seater) | 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol, Six-speed manual | Rs. 9.99 Lakh |
Plus (7-Seater) | 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol, Six-speed manual | Rs. 11.99 Lakh |
Max (7-Seater) | 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol, Six-speed automatic | Rs. 12.82–14.56 Lakh |
Note: There are approximately four to five more variants for the ‘Max’ variant. All of them are mechanically the same; they are segregated mostly by paint schemes.
Fuel efficiency is not the strongest point of the 1.2-litre turbo engine. Running costs will keep going up if you cover a lot of kilometres every month. The base trim gets the naturally aspirated engine, but this one feels underpowered instead.
Citroen could have really made the experience better by giving the audience a diesel option, one that would cover long highway stretches without buyers having to worry about fuel efficiency. Regardless, in the present setup, you will have to drive with a very light foot to get double digits.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
Engine & Transmission | ARAI Claimed Mileage | City Mileage (Real-World) | Highway Mileage (Real-World) |
1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol (Automatic) | 17.5 kmpl | 9–10 kmpl | 12–14 kmpl |
1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol (Manual) | 18.5 kmpl | 10–11 kmpl | 13–15 kmpl |
The car recently pulled off a five-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests, and for the most part, it covers the core fundamentals of a good safety package.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The robust platform has a strong shell on offer. There are six airbags fitted to all the variants, while ISOFIX child seat mounts are at the back for keeping kids safe. Meanwhile, even though the doors don’t make the visual cut, they shut with a reassuring sound, hinting that Citroen has used higher build quality materials for them.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
The Electronic Stability Program feature keeps the car composed, while hill-hold assistance prevents the SUV from rolling back on challenging slopes. There is also a tyre pressure monitoring system, a handy addition to keep a constant watch on the rubber. The 360-degree camera is not quite clear enough with its image quality, and the car also misses out on a proper ADAS suite.
Safety Verdict
The Aircross X focuses more on the passive safety side rather than putting more effort into electronic aids. Without a doubt, its five-star rating is its biggest asset.
The latest update has made the car more driver-friendly. Previously, the cabin felt a bit barebones, but the brand has listened actively to the loudest complaints and made all the necessary changes. But despite the rework, the layout is still clean like before, with physical buttons for key climate control functions, which is always a welcome sight.
Seshan mentions,
“The company nails the space, comfort, and ride quality while backing it up with the features that were missing earlier.”
Infotainment and Interface
- The centrepiece ahead is a crisp 10.25-inch touchscreen that does not lag at all.
- It keeps support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on standby.
- The newly added CARA AI voice assistant understands multiple Indian accents (52, presumably).
- The driver gets a seven-inch digital instrument cluster that shows speed and trip details clearly.
- But it’s not as customisable as the ones we see from its rivals.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- Front seats now get three levels of ventilation, a decision that is nothing less than a lifesaver for Indian summers.
- Roof-mounted rear AC vents come with independent blower controls that keep the cabin at optimal temperatures.
- Citroen has also fitted the car with cruise control, which makes highway drives less taxing.
- There are two additional Type-C charging ports in the rear to keep devices powered on.
In its standard five-seater layout, the Citroen Aircross X gives you 444 litres of cargo capacity, a space that easily invites two large suitcases alongside a couple of soft bags. The loading lip is relatively low, so sliding heavy boxes inside requires minimal effort, making you worry less during weekend family trips.
If you want to check out the seven-seater version instead, expect the boot space to be much larger, since the third-row seats are completely removable. Plucking them out takes the total volume to a massive 511 litres. But despite such convenience, if all three rows are up, luggage space practically vanishes, leaving room for just a couple of laptop bags.
Citroen’s reputation for brilliant suspension tuning is fully intact here. The Aircross X simply glides over broken tarmac. It uses a MacPherson strut setup at the front and a twist-beam at the rear, but the calibration is what makes the magic happen.
Seshan observes,
“The Aircross X is tuned for comfort, soaking up bumps and undulations with minimal harshness felt inside the cabin.”
City Driving
The steering is light at parking speeds, making U-turns completely stress-free. Combined with the 200 mm ground clearance, you can confidently take on those odd massive speed breakers without scraping the underbelly, so expect the car to be a decent performer inside the city.
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, the Aircross X maintains excellent straight-line stability. The steering weighs up nicely, meaning you don’t often have to stay busy correcting its course. However, push it past 120 kmph, and the three-cylinder engine note becomes fairly loud inside the cabin. And wind noise also creeps in around the A-pillars when the car is zooming at high speeds.
The 2026 Aircross X line-up has three main trims, with the ‘Max’ variant giving different colour options in retail. Engine-wise, you can either go for the naturally aspirated engine on the base model or the punchy turbo-petrol on the higher variants.
Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
X You | 1.2-Litre Petrol, Five-speed manual | Six airbags, ESC, basic digital cluster | Fleet buyers or tight budgets |
X Plus | 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol, manual/automatic | 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, roof AC vents | Value-conscious buyers |
X Max | 1.2-litre Turbo Petrol, manual/automatic | Ventilated seats, cruise control, leatherette upholstery | Buyers wanting maximum comfort |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- No factory-fitted CNG or diesel engine option
- Poor resolution of the 360-degree camera
- Old-school flap-style door handles
- No panoramic or single-pane sunroof
As Seshan specifies,
“To achieve that aggressive pricing, Citroen had to cut some corners, and they are quite apparent.”
Depending on whether you’re travelling interstate or doing your weekend grocery runs, it’s mostly down between the engines, and which one will suit your driving goals the best.
Best for the City Commuter: X Plus AT
If you have to face heavy traffic every single day, the Aircross X Plus AT in a five-seat configuration makes sense. The six-speed automatic takes the pain out of driving, and this mid-spec trim gets all the necessary tech you could want, without blowing the budget.
Best for Large Families: X Max
For buyers who frequently travel with kids or extra relatives, the Aircross X Max 7-Seater AT is the logical variant. You get the flexibility of the removable third row, and there is also the comfort of ventilated front seats and dedicated roof-mounted air conditioning for those inside the car’s back.
Best for Budget Buyers: X Plus MT
The Aircross X Plus MT balances performance and price well. You get the strong 1.2-litre turbo engine and manual gearbox, which feels eager on the highway, all while keeping the on-road price attractive. Note that we have asked you to skip the base 'You' trim from our side because of its weaker naturally aspirated engine.
The Aircross X fights in one of the toughest segments in India. Its pricing makes it look more valuable compared to other mid-size SUVs, but the car’s still not able to completely shake off the competition. The Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos are two of its most aggressive rivals.
Hyundai has gained a lot of market love for its feature-loaded cabins, and the Creta keeps that reputation alive for the South Korean manufacturer. The Kia Seltos, on the other hand, stands out because it has some striking elements that sports car lovers definitely want. Against their proposition, the Citroen Aircross X plays it safe by being practical with both the riding quality and the seating space.
| Model | Engine Options | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Citroen Aircross X | 1.2-Litre Petrol / Turbo Petrol | Outstanding ride comfort, flexible seven-seat option | Rs. 8.89 – 14.56 Lakh |
| Hyundai Creta | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Turbo Petrol / Diesel | Refined engines, massive feature list, Level 2 ADAS | Rs. 10.79 – 20.20 Lakh |
| Kia Seltos | 1.5-Litre Petrol / Turbo Petrol / Diesel | Sporty dynamics, premium cabin, sharp looks | Rs. 10.99 – 20.39 Lakh |
Which Mid-Size SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Citroen Aircross X if you want the best ride quality on bad Indian roads and wouldn’t mind having a flexible 5+2 seating layout on a tight budget.
- Choose the Hyundai Creta if you want a more premium interior, strong resale value, and the option of a frugal diesel engine.
- Choose the Kia Seltos if sharp styling, sporty handling, and a highly loaded tech cabin are at the top of your requirement list.
Pros
- Outstanding ride quality
- Strong mid-range punch
- Flexible seven-seat layout
- Aggressive pricing structure
Cons
- Noticeable cost-cutting
- No diesel or factory CNG option
- Poor mileage figures
- Thin service network footprint
Verdict
Once a budget alternative, now a genuinely capable family vehicle; that’s what the Citroen Aircross X has turned into in 2026. All complaints about its initial model have been addressed, from missing ventilated seats to a more modern screen. The turbo-petrol engine works wonders both around city corners and on long stretches, while the seating space you get inside this car is something that truly complements its listed price tag.
But it’s not without its flaws. Many potential buyers may turn their heads elsewhere since there aren’t any eco-friendlier engines on the shelf. Moreover, the car also does not give the true premium feel like its Korean rivals, and one cost-cutting here and there becomes too much to ignore. However, looking past such drawbacks, if you care mostly about space and unmatched suspension comfort, the Citroen Aircross X is still a serious SUV worth your time and consideration.
As Seshan sums up,
“With the latest update, the SUV feels complete, feature-packed, and much better aligned with what Indian buyers want.”
