car&bike Expert Take
"The Tata Nexon offers striking exterior styling, a high-quality interior, and multiple engine choices. The Indian brand also recently gave it a massive facelift that heavily upgraded the digital experience inside the cabin, while keeping its practical high ground clearance and solid build quality intact."
Tata Nexon Overview
The sub-four-metre SUV segment is the most contested space in India, and the Tata Nexon has a massive share of it in the country’s market. Its latest generation takes heavy design inspiration from the Curvv concept, dropping its older, rounder shape for a much sharper, futuristic stance.
Tata Motors offers this car with a wide variety of powertrains, including petrol, diesel, CNG, and even pure electric. Buyers can also choose from multiple transmission options, including a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The SUV clearly competes with other prominent offerings like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
Seshan Vijayraghvan has constantly tested the different engines of this car, and he also shared several reviews for each. In one of them, he says this about the Nexon,
“The Tata Nexon has consistently been one of the top-selling SUVs in the Indian market for a couple of years now.”
As mentioned, Tata Motors lets buyers pick between a turbocharged petrol, a turbocharged diesel, or a factory-fitted CNG variant for the ICE model.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol | 118 bhp | 170 Nm | Five-Speed Manual / Six-Speed Manual / Six-Speed AMT / Seven-Speed DCT | Front-Wheel Drive |
| 1.5-Litre Turbo Diesel | 113 bhp | 260 Nm | Six-Speed Manual / Six-Speed AMT | Front-Wheel Drive |
| 1.2-Litre Turbo CNG | 99 bhp | 170 Nm | 6-Speed Manual | Front-Wheel Drive |

Key Takeaways
- The 1.2-litre petrol engine gets the widest range of gearboxes.
- The 1.5-litre diesel engine suits effortless highway cruising the most.
- The CNG variant is highly capable for city usage while keeping running costs low.
City Driving Experience
- The steering of this car remains light at low speeds so that you can manoeuvre easily.
- The turbo-petrol engine may take a split second to respond at low revs.
- But its power builds cleanly once you cross 1,750 rpm.
- If you opt for the AMT gearbox, gear shifts reportedly feel a bit jerky in city traffic.
- The DCT handles such traffic much better.
Highway Driving Experience
- The diesel engine is ideal for long-distance drivers, showing relaxed rpm levels at 100 kmph.
- You will hear the three-cylinder petrol engine on uninterrupted stretches if you rev it hard.
- The seven-speed DCT executes quick downshifts when you need to pass slower trucks.

The Nexon no longer looks like a raised hatchback; it has that proper, sharp-edged SUV appeal.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Tata Nexon | Maruti Suzuki Brezza | Hyundai Venue |
| Length | 3,995 mm | 3,995 mm | 3,995 mm |
| Width | 1,804 mm | 1,790 mm | 1,770 mm |
| Height | 1,620 mm | 1,685 mm | 1,617 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,498 mm | 2,500 mm | 2,500 mm |
| Kerb Weight | 1,225-1,346 kg | 1,145-1,220 kg | 1,081-1,251 kg |
| Ground Clearance | 208 mm | 198 mm | 190 mm |

Key Takeaways
- The 208 mm ground clearance is one of the highest in the segment.
- Its 1,804 mm width gives it a planted, wide stance on the road.
- The footprint remains under four metres, avoiding heavy tax penalties.
Build Quality & Materials
The Nexon continues Tata’s reputation of building structurally solid cars with its five-star Global NCAP safety rating. The exterior paint finish is excellent across all shades. Inside, Tata uses plenty of soft-touch materials on the dashboard, making the cabin feel far more premium than its predecessor. And its doors have that firm, heavy identity you usually find in robust vehicles.

The current design update stripped away the older, rounded elements for a highly tech-heavy look.

Front Profile
- A modern split-headlamp design sits at the front.
- Sleek LED daytime running lights sit high up near the bonnet line.
- The main LED headlights are mounted lower down on the bumper in angular housings.
- A slim upper grille connects the DRLs, while a massive lower air dam feeds the engine.
Side Profile
- The side profile retains the familiar Nexon silhouette, including the sloping roofline.
- The sloping roofline looks great, but it does cut down the size of the rear windshield.
- The thick plastic cladding around the wheel arches protects the paint from flying stones.
- It rides on 16-inch alloy wheels that feature aerodynamic inserts.
Rear Profile
- The rear gets a massive update with a connected LED light bar stretching across the tailgate.
- The reverse lights are integrated into the lower bumper alongside aggressive faux skid plates.

The cabin has dropped all physical buttons in favour of touch-sensitive panels and large screens.

Cabin Layout and Quality
- The old steering wheel is replaced by a futuristic two-spoke unit with an illuminated Tata logo in the centre.
- A touch-sensitive panel manages the automatic climate control.
- While it looks brilliant in the showroom, the gloss black panel picks up fingerprints quickly.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
- The front seats are heavily bolstered, keeping you securely in place around corners.
- They offer high under-thigh support for tall drivers as well.
- Top trims get a ventilation function for hot Indian climates.
- The driver also benefits from a height-adjustable seat.
Seshan notes,
"The ventilated seats on the Nexon are one of its best features for me."

Second Row
- The rear bench easily accommodates two adults.
- But seating three can feel a bit tight because of the heavily contoured outer seats.
- Legroom is highly adequate, but headroom might be an issue for passengers over six feet tall.
- Rear passengers get dedicated AC vents and USB charging ports for travel convenience.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- A high-definition 360-degree parking camera
- A wireless charging pad on the centre console
- A massive 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- The crisp 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster

Tata structured the Nexon lineup to cover a massive price band. Buyers can enter the range at a highly affordable price point or alternatively go for the expensive trims.
Variant | Powertrain | Available Transmissions | Ex-Showroom Price |
Smart / Smart Plus | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel | Manual / AMT | Rs. 7.37 - 9.37 Lakh |
Smart / Smart Plus | 1.2-Litre CNG | Manual | Rs. 8.30 - 9.42 Lakh |
Pure Plus | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel | Manual / AMT | Rs. 8.95 - 11.20 Lakh |
Pure Plus | 1.2-Litre CNG | Manual | Rs. 9.85 - 10.40 Lakh |
Creative / Creative Plus | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel | Manual / AMT / DCT | Rs. 10.00 - 13.47 Lakh |
Creative / Creative Plus | 1.2-Litre CNG | Manual | Rs. 11.05 - 12.67 Lakh |
Fearless / Fearless Plus | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel | Manual / AMT / DCT | Rs. 12.27 - 14.22 Lakh |
Fearless / Fearless Plus | 1.2-Litre CNG | Manual | Rs. 12.27 - 13.42 Lakh |
The diesel motor remains the best option for long-distance drivers looking to save on fuel costs. But the CNG variant isn’t far behind, dropping down on performance numbers to compensate for equally efficient fuel frugality. The 44-litre tank capacity applies universally across its three engines. The CNG model also has an additional twin-cylinder CNG tank with a 60-litre water capacity.
Engine | ARAI Claimed Mileage | User-reported city mileage | User-reported highway mileage |
1.2-Litre Turbo Petrol | 17.44 kmpl (MT) / 17.01 kmpl (DCT) | 10-12 kmpl | 14-16 kmpl |
1.5-Litre Turbo Diesel | 23.23 kmpl (MT) / 24.08 kmpl (AMT) | 13-15 kmpl | 18-20 kmpl |
1.2-Litre Turbo CNG | 17.44 km/kg | 16-18 km/kg | 20-22 km/kg |
With its full five-star rating, the SUV also uses a highly rigid body shell to keep its occupants safe.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
- Tata provides six airbags as standard across every single variant, from Smart to Fearless.
- Three-point seatbelts are included for all passengers.
- ISOFIX child seat mounts keep young passengers secure in the back.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP) comes standard on all variants.
- Higher variants get a high-resolution 360-degree camera and a blind-spot monitor.
- The car also features an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), hill-hold assist, and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
- The Fearless+ PS DCA trim was updated with Level 2 ADAS, which houses Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
- But note that the ADAS suite is not available on the diesel and CNG powertrains.
The latest Nexon’s cabin is no longer a basic functional space. In fact, it has become a highly digital environment.
Seshan appreciates the given tech,
"From Type C USB ports to a wireless phone charger, Tata seems to have covered all the basics here."

Infotainment and Interface
- The top variants have a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen.
- The driver gets a matching 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster.
- The second screen can display the navigation map directly behind the steering wheel.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- The front seats offer a ventilation function.
- An electric panoramic sunroof is available right from the Pure+ PS trim.
- The nine-speaker JBL audio system includes a subwoofer, delivering heavy bass.

Packaging an SUV under four metres requires compromise, but the Nexon handles luggage duties reasonably well.
- The boot offers a total capacity of 382 litres (and 321 litres in the CNG variant).
- This space easily accommodates two large hard-shell suitcases and a few soft duffel bags.
- The loading lip is slightly high, so you have to lift heavy bags up and over the bumper.
- The rear seats fold down in a 60:40 split, allowing you to carry much longer items.
Tata tuned the suspension to handle terrible Indian roads pretty well, but there’s a touch of stiffness from the MacPherson setup as well.

City Driving
- Driving the Nexon through the city feels convenient.
- The steering stays light while moving through narrow streets.
- The suspension absorbs large potholes fairly well.
- However, as mentioned, you do feel a slight underlying firmness over sharp bumps.

Highway Driving
- The SUV shines on the highway, as its heavy kerb weight keeps it firmly planted.
- The steering also gains reassuring weight as you drive faster.
- The car’s stability doesn’t let drivers become nervous at triple-digit speeds.
- Wind and road noise are isolated well, making it a quiet long-distance cruiser.
Seshan states,
“One thing I can say is, the Tata Nexon is a great driver’s car.”
Tata organises the current Nexon’s lineup using a persona-based naming strategy.
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
Smart | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel / 1.2-Litre CNG | Six airbags, ESP, LED headlamps | Strict budget buyers |
Pure | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel / 1.2-Litre CNG | Touchscreen, steering controls, wheel covers | Buyers wanting essential daily features |
Creative | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel / 1.2-Litre CNG | 360-camera, auto AC, 16-inch alloys | Buyers wanting a highly equipped SUV |
Fearless | 1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel / 1.2-Litre CNG | 10.25-inch screens, ventilated seats, JBL audio | Buyers wanting maximum luxury |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- A completely soft, plush ride over broken city streets
- Physical buttons for the automatic climate control
- High rearward visibility through the inside rearview mirror
Given the several trims available, you can either settle for a base-level variant or pay for the absolute top tier in this nameplate. Regardless of the variant you choose, the safety credentials stay the same.
Best on a Tight Budget: Pure Plus
If you want to keep costs low, the Pure Plus trim is the logical choice. It gives you a touchscreen, steering-mounted controls, and essential convenience features without pushing into the expensive higher tiers.
Best Value Overall: Creative Plus
This variant might hit the sweet spot for some. It adds the 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, and 16-inch alloy wheels. You get the premium look and safety tech without paying top-spec prices.
Best for Luxury Enthusiasts: Fearless Plus
If you want the complete digital experience, buy the Fearless Plus. The twin 10.25-inch screens, ventilated seats, and JBL sound system make the cabin feel like a much more expensive vehicle.
Indian buyers frequently compare the Nexon against strong rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet.
Model | Powertrain | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price |
1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.5-Litre Diesel / CNG | Five-star safety, striking design, robust suspension | Rs. 7.37 - 14.22 Lakh
1.5-Litre Petrol / CNG | Highly reliable, excellent fuel efficiency | Rs. 8.26 - 13.01 Lakh
1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.0-Litre Turbo / 1.5-Litre Diesel | Refined engines, plush cabin, easy to drive | Rs. 8.00 - 15.83 Lakh
1.2-Litre Petrol / 1.0-Litre Turbo / 1.5-Litre Diesel | Sporty styling, massive feature list, sharp handling | Rs. 7.33 - 14.09 Lakh |
Which Sub-Compact SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Tata Nexon if you want proven crash safety, a high-tech cabin, and a suspension that absorbs bad roads easily.
- Choose the Maruti Suzuki Brezza if you prioritise long-term reliability and low maintenance costs.
- Choose the Hyundai Venue if you want a highly refined engine and a quiet, comfortable cabin for city driving.
- Choose the Kia Sonet if you prefer aggressive exterior styling and sporty driving dynamics.
Pros
- Five-star safety rating and standard six airbags
- The twin 10.25-inch screens
- The diesel engine has excellent highway fuel economy
Cons
- The petrol engine feels slightly jerky
- Rearward visibility is poor due to the sloping roofline
- The AMT gearbox on lower variants feels slow
Verdict
Tata fixed the dated interior of the previous generation and fitted in some class-leading screens and premium materials on the current Nexon. Its exterior styling makes it look like a much larger, more expensive SUV on the road as well. Although the touch-sensitive controls require a learning curve, and the petrol engine lacks the refinement of its Korean rivals, the safety suite is what makes this car so practical for families. Moreover, the diesel variant is the undisputed one for interstate highway cruises.
Seshan summarises,
“I have known owners who have hardly faced many issues with their Nexon and are quite happy with their purchase.”
