Verdict

Smart spaces like the keys bin between the two front seats, bottle holders and even an umbrella nook in the front doors, and a cooled glove box - are some of the tricks in the Punch. It claims 25 utility spaces across the cabin! The car also has adequate rear legroom great under-thigh support, and surprising headroom. Higher trims have a drop-down armrest at the back, and the fabric seat upholstery is grey with elements of the exterior colour in the pattern. The rear floor is almost flat - which adds to the sense of space.

Tata Punch

Tata Motors has been going through a spectacular renaissance of late, coming up with new-age models that are a far departure from earlier offerings, in terms of design, features, and performance. The Tata Punch is the latest entrant from the company into the sub-compact SUV segment, although it only gets front-wheel drive. It is slotted between the Tata Nexon and Tiago NRG cross-hatch models, with only a petrol engine with manual and AMT options. The price point is attractive and aggressive, competing with other compact SUVs like the Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, and even some Tata Nexon variants.

The Tata Punch looks the part, although there is a certain chunkiness due to its shorter length. The Punch comes with a sophisticated and refined design, with 16-inch wheels for the top-end trim. There is plastic cladding for the car, along with useful LED daytime running lights as well. The front could feel like a micro-version of the Tata Harrier or Safari although it is edgy enough to warrant attention. The rear design has clean lines with a more hatch-like design template. The car is well-proportioned overall and does convey a mini-SUV vibe on the road. The Y-shaped elements for the tail lamps make for a good addition, along with the integrated spoiler at the rear, and chiseled tailgate.

The Tata Punch sports comfortable and plush interiors. The white and grey plastics have a nice finish to them while the overall look is simple. The top-end trim gets a 7-inch floating island LCD infotainment setup with a 7-inch TFT unit for various displays. The seats feel comfortable enough, with driver seat height adjustment and tilt steering adjustment alike, enabling you to achieve a better driving position.

The rear seats are comfortable and there is generous legroom at the back, with good under-thigh support and headroom alike. There is a near-flat floor layout, helping middle passengers sit more comfortably at the rear. Yet, the Punch does not get rear air conditioning vents. The doors, however, open till 90 degrees and this is supplemented by 190 mm of ground clearance, making egress and ingress quite easy as well. The boot offers 366 litres of capacity, which is helpful indeed.

The Tata Punch has an infotainment system of 7 inches and another 7-inch TFT driver binnacle display. The infotainment unit does not come with wireless connectivity, although there is Apple CarPlay and other connectivity features. The AMT version comes with Traction Pro as a dedicated mode. Other features include cruise control and the iRA connected car suite which is only an optional feature for the top-end variant.

Fuel Type Petrol
Engine capacity1199cc
Power86 hp
Torque113 Nm

The Tata Punch comes with only a single engine option, i.e. the three cylinder 1.2 litre engine that is used in the Altroz. This makes 86 hp and 113 Nm of maximum torque, while being paired to 5-speed manual and AMT systems. The AMT unit performs well enough, although it may not thrill anyone. The drive feels slightly unsteady at times, while the feeling continues when there is a congestion or during peak traffic. There are City and ECO driving modes, along with Traction Pro with the AMT version. This helps with drivability at higher altitudes or in rural zones. The petrol engine has a rougher note, although with good NVH levels, the overall experience is decent. Acceleration is not as effortless, with 16.5 seconds required to get to 100 kmph. The Punch can cruise smoothly at 100 kmph as well, making it a good highway driver.

The AMT system feels sluggish and shifting is not as smooth as you would expect. This is not an issue while driving in the city, although the gearbox does have a manual option for enhancing sportiness. The engine note is better from the 5,500 RPM threshold, with swift manual down-shifting. The manual version has a light clutch for  ease of driving, and it is more exciting to drive as well.

The softer suspension system ensures a more supple ride, while the steering is light, making it suitable for city commutes. The Tata Punch feels more agile on the road and the manual version has a sporty feel to it, which should draw in driving enthusiasts. The Punch is easy to drive, with a great suspension system with limited roll. The car is nicely stable at high speeds and can cruise comfortably on the highway.

There is low road noise, and the driving modes are also a nice addition. The Tata Punch can also take slightly rougher roads comfortably. High ground clearance of 190 mm is also a plus point in this regard. The suspension system can take potholes and bumps neatly although the ride is sometimes jittery at speeds higher than 100 kmph..

VersionMileage (ARAI)
Petrol-Manual18.9 kmpl
Petrol-AMT18.8 kmpl

You can expect around 17 kmpl in terms of real-world fuel economy. Overall Tata Punch mileage figures are decent enough for this segment.

The Tata Punch is one of the safest cars in its segment, getting 4 stars for child occupant protection and 5 stars for adult occupant protection in Global NCAP crash test ratings. The Punch scored  16.453 points in the test, making it one of the safest vehicles in the country as well. The Punch has high-strength steel used extensively throughout the chassis, along with safety features like dual airbags, CSC, ABS, EBD, ISOFIX child mounts, brake sway control, seat belt warning, over-speed warning, anti-theft engine immobilizer, speed sensing door locks, central locking, and the flashing emergency brake light.

There is only a petrol engine for the Tata Punch, although it has manual and AMT transmission options. The base variant does not get many features and is not a value for money proposition.  If one has the budget. The top-end Creative trim is packed with features, although it is on the costlier side. The Adventure trim is not really a huge upgrade from the entry-level model, although it has a high price tag. The Accomplished trim offers the most value, offering almost all the features and you can take the optional pack for some more of those. The Creative trim is costly although it has all the bells and whistles that one would desire.

The Tata Punch has several rivals across segments, including the Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Mahindra KUV100, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and even the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, at this price point. The Punch is wider and longer than its rivals, although the KUV100 is the tallest car. The Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger are even wider and longer than the Tata Punch.

The Magnite and Kiger have smaller engines, while the Tata Punch has a 1.2 litre engine. Other rivals also have 1.2 litre petrol engines at this price point. The Tata Punch has better power output than many other cars here, although the Swift is the most powerful amongst them all. Where the Punch stands out is its vast list of features, which are at par with most of its competitors in the segment, while getting some additional goodies like connected car technology (optional), 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, cruise control, and automatic wipers and headlamps. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios is the only one with wireless mobile phone charging, although it is available as an optional feature for the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger. The Tata Punch makes for a good option as compared to its rivals. Those seeking a good sub-compact SUV with a long feature list, stylish looks, and a refined engine will gravitate towards it.

The Tata Punch makes for an attractive proposition, considering its features, good drivability, stylish design, and elevated seating position. Yet, the pricing could be a downer for some buyers, especially since there are sub-compact SUVs and premium hatchbacks at this price point, while the performance is not as inspiring as one would want. The AMT setup also has its fair share of niggles. Yet, the cabin offers generous space, while boot space is great as well.. The styling is spot-on with the resemblance to the Harrier. The car has a good audio system from Harman along with several additional features like Traction Pro, automatic wipers and headlamps, cruise control, connected car tech as optional, and a cooled glovebox.

What adds to the appeal of the Tata Punch is its high safety quotient. Yes, the engine and performance are not as exciting, the suspension is firmer than desired, and the AMT system could have been better. However, if you take the overall proposition, then the Tata Punch offers great value for buyers, if they are looking for that SUV-feel at a lower price, with good features and a stylish design. The fact that it is one of the safest cars in India is another plus point by all means.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

View All Punch FAQs
  • The Tata Punch is equipped with a 1.2-liter Revotron petrol engine that delivers a maximum power of 85 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm at 3,300 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox. The engine is designed to deliver good performance as well as fuel efficiency.
  • The Tata Punch, a notable entrant in the compact suv segment is engineered with a focus on delivering a balanced driving experience. This vehicle comes standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox. This gearbox is designed to offer smooth and precise gear shifts, catering to drivers who enjoy a more engaged and interactive driving experience. The manual transmission in the Tata Punch is not just a functional aspect of the vehicle; it's a key component in delivering a driving experience that feels connected and responsive. The tactile feedback and control offered by the manual gearbox are aspects that enthusiasts often appreciate, as it allows for a more involved and dynamic interaction with the vehicle.

In addition to the manual option, the Tata Punch also offers a 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) as an alternative. This gearbox is aimed at buyers who prioritize convenience and ease of use, particularly in urban driving conditions where frequent stop-and-go traffic can make a manual transmission less appealing. The AMT in the Tata Punch is designed to provide smooth gear shifts, contributing to a more relaxed and less strenuous driving experience. This type of gearbox combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, giving drivers the best of both worlds.

The inclusion of both transmission types in the Tata Punch lineup underscores Tata Motors' commitment to catering to a diverse range of customer preferences. Whether it’s the engaging manual gearbox for those who love driving or the convenient AMT for those who seek ease and comfort, the Tata Punch is equipped to deliver. This versatility in transmission choice is a thoughtful consideration by Tata Motors, ensuring that different driving styles and needs are accommodated. Moreover, the choice of transmission has implications for fuel efficiency and performance, with each type offering distinct advantages. The manual gearbox typically provides a more direct connection between the driver and the vehicle, potentially leading to better control over fuel consumption and power delivery. On the other hand, the AMT offers a more effortless driving experience, especially in traffic-laden city conditions.

  • The heart of the Tata Punch is its robust 1.2-liter Revotron petrol engine, a powerplant that exemplifies a harmonious blend of performance and efficiency. This impressive engine is capable of generating a maximum power output of 86 PS at 6,000 rpm, ensuring that the Punch delivers a spirited and responsive drive. Additionally, it produces a peak torque of 113 Nm at 3,300 rpm, providing ample low-end torque for smooth acceleration and effortless city driving.

What sets the Tata Punch's engine apart is its well-calibrated tuning, which strikes an optimal balance between power and fuel efficiency . This design philosophy is particularly advantageous for drivers, as it means that the Punch offers lively performance when needed while maintaining commendable fuel economy. This dual advantage is especially appreciated in diverse driving scenarios, whether you're navigating city streets or embarking on longer highway journeys.

Furthermore, the engine's refined engineering contributes to reduced emissions and a more environmentally conscious driving experience. It aligns with modern standards for cleaner and more efficient combustion, making the Tata Punch an eco-friendly choice in addition to its dynamic performance attributes.

  • The type of seats equipped in the Tata Punch is an essential aspect of the car's interior comfort and driving experience. It can be confirmed that the Tata Punch features fabric seats, a choice that prioritizes both comfort and durability.

The fabric seats in the Tata Punch are carefully designed to ensure a pleasant and ergonomic seating experience. They are known for their comfort, which is a crucial factor for drivers and passengers, particularly during long journeys. These seats provide excellent support, which is vital to reduce fatigue and discomfort on extended drives.

The choice of fabric seats aligns with the Tata Punch's commitment to delivering a comfortable and user-friendly interior. Fabric seats are known for their durability and ability to withstand regular use without showing signs of wear and tear quickly. This durability ensures that the seats retain their comfort and appearance over time, contributing to the car's overall value and longevity.

  • The legroom for rear passengers in the Tata Punch is a notable aspect of its interior design and contributes to the overall comfort of the vehicle. Despite the compact size of the car, Tata Motors has ensured that rear passengers have adequate legroom to sit comfortably during journeys. The rear seats are thoughtfully positioned to provide ample space for passengers, and this design consideration becomes particularly evident when tall passengers occupy the back seat.

One of the key objectives in designing the Tata Punch's interior was to maximize space utilization, and this is evident in the generous legroom offered to rear passengers. Whether it's for daily commutes or longer road trips, the Tata Punch ensures that passengers in the rear seats do not feel cramped or uncomfortable. This feature is especially important for the overall passenger experience, as it allows individuals of various heights to travel without any discomfort.

Moreover, the attention to detail in providing good legroom for rear passengers aligns with modern automotive standards, where comfort and convenience play a significant role in the selection of a vehicle. Tata Motors has successfully struck a balance between compact car dimensions and interior spaciousness, making the Tata Punch a practical and comfortable choice for those who frequently travel with rear passengers.

  • The headroom in the Tata Punch is a notable feature that enhances the overall spaciousness and comfort of the vehicle, ensuring that both front and rear passengers can enjoy a comfortable and unrestricted seating experience. The car's design incorporates a tall roofline, which translates into ample headroom for occupants, irrespective of their height.

Starting with the front passengers, the Tata Punch provides generous headroom, allowing even taller individuals to sit comfortably without their heads coming into contact with the roof. This design consideration is particularly important for driver and front passenger comfort during long journeys, as it eliminates any feelings of confinement and ensures a relaxed seating posture.

The rear passengers are equally well-catered to in terms of headroom. The car's design philosophy extends to the rear cabin, where the ample headroom continues to provide a spacious and comfortable environment for passengers. Whether it's children or adults occupying the rear seats, the Tata Punch ensures that there is no compromise on headroom, allowing everyone to sit comfortably without feeling cramped or restricted.

The careful attention to headroom for both front and rear passengers aligns with the modern standards of automotive design, where passenger comfort is a significant consideration. It reflects Tata Motors' commitment to providing a well-thought-out and comfortable interior space for all occupants, regardless of their seating position in the car.

  • The Tata Punch, a compact suv that has garnered attention for its safety features, comes equipped with dual front airbags as a standard offering across its variants. These airbags are a crucial component of the vehicle’s safety system, designed to provide an additional layer of protection for both the driver and the front passenger in the event of a collision.

Airbags are essential in modern vehicles for mitigating injuries during accidents. In the case of the Tata Punch , the inclusion of dual front airbags demonstrates the manufacturer’s commitment to passenger safety. Upon impact, these airbags deploy rapidly to cushion the occupants from hitting the vehicle’s hard surfaces, thereby reducing the risk of severe injuries. The presence of airbags as a standard feature is particularly commendable, as it ensures that even the base models of the Tata Punch are equipped with this critical safety technology.

In addition to airbags, the Tata Punch is outfitted with a comprehensive suite of other safety features, further enhancing its safety profile. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) is a key feature. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during emergency braking, thereby maintaining vehicle control and reducing the chances of a skid. EBD complements ABS by distributing braking force among the wheels according to their load, ensuring effective stopping power and stability.

Another notable safety feature in the Tata Punch is corner stability control. This technology helps maintain the vehicle’s stability when navigating turns, particularly at higher speeds or under adverse conditions. It works by applying brakes to individual wheels, helping to counteract any tendency of the vehicle to skid or lose traction, thereby enhancing safety during cornering.

Hill hold control is an additional safety feature that provides convenience and safety, especially on inclines. This system prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when starting from a stop on a hill. It temporarily holds the brakes, giving the driver time to move their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator without the car rolling back. This feature is particularly useful in hilly terrain and congested urban settings with sloping roads.
