car&bike Expert Take

The Honda SP 125 is a perfect example of a daily commuter being an equally exciting driving machine. While keeping the Shine’s bulletproof reliability, it showcases a much-needed dose of modern technology and sporty styling.”

The Honda SP 125 currently enjoys its position as a premium motorcycle in India’s highly competitive, highly practical 125 cc commuter segment. It sits above the Honda Shine in the market, trying to lure young professionals who want daily commutation facilities but in a more contemporary profile.

Launched late 2024, the 2025 Honda SP 125 variant arrived with a new 4.2-inch TFT screen with Bluetooth connectivity, a better LED headlamp design and most importantly, full compliance with OBD2B emission norms. Alongside the important mechanical tweaks, it also launched with a 25-Year Anniversary Edition to celebrate its longtime presence in the Indian market.

During car&bike’s extensive road tests, Preetam Bora tested the motorcycle in both urban traffic and open stretches. All findings confirm what we initially thought about it; it has unmatched engine refinement and frugal running costs, and the overall ownership experience can be amplified through thoughtful feature additions. Check out our experts’ insights, both on our website and our YouTube channel.

The Honda SP 125 has a refined 123.94 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine. It boasts Honda’s Enhanced Smart Power (eSP) technology and an ACG starter motor, which gives quick, silent engine starts. Power delivery is quite linear across its band, so the riding experience is predictable for newer riders as well as reliable for daily commuters.

Preetam notes,

“This is not just a CB Shine engine with fuel injection bolted on; it is a ground-up redesign. Honda has focused on reducing internal friction by using a cooling oil jet for the piston and an offset crank.”

The five-speed manual gearbox is smooth to use, with a light clutch action that reduces riding fatigue on long rides or crawling through city traffic. Honda has also given the bike piston-cooling jet technology to reduce friction and maintain pretty good engine temperatures even when the bike is subjected to heavy loads.

Honda SP 125 2023 New Look

The overall design of the SP 125 is youthful and energetic, making it an ideal choice for young professionals and urban commuters looking for a bike that balances aesthetics with practicality. The bike's compact and lightweight body also makes it easy to maneuver through city traffic.

Engine & Transmission

The following table outlines the Honda SP 125’s engine specifications.

City Riding Experience

In city traffic, we found the motorcycle remarkably nimble. The engine’s strong bottom-end and mid-range torque curve means you do not have to constantly switch gears while on the move. The throttle, meanwhile, is quick to respond, and the fuel injection system eliminates sudden jerks when you begin the bike from zero.

Preetam adds,

“Commuters will appreciate the real-time fuel efficiency display and the green 'Eco' light, which helps riders maintain an optimal pace for better economy.”

Honda SP 125 Ride View

Highway Riding Experience

Out on the horizon, the motorcycle cruises comfortably between 65 kmph and 75 kmph with minimal to zero vibrations. However, the engine’s limitations become clearer when you start pushing it beyond 85 kmph (a slight buzz in the footpegs and handlebars). Overall, it can reach a top speed of around 100 kmph, but high-speed highway touring is not its strongest point.

Honda SP 125 City Riding Experience

While basic commuters stick to conservative styling, the Honda SP 125 differentiates with a youthful and athletic vibe, catching glances on the road without looking too aggressive either. The fuel tank looks muscular and is completed with sharp, extended shrouds, giving it a much larger visual footprint that betrays its actual displacement.

Build Quality & Materials

Honda’s typically known for their high-quality fit and finish, and it’s no different for this motorcycle. The panel gaps are uniformly aligned, the paint quality used is top-notch, and the switchgear gives off a tactile and premium vibe. All the cables and hoses are neatly tucked away, giving the handlebars a clean, uncluttered look.

Honda SP 125 Colour Options

Honda SP 125 Colours

There are multiple paint schemes for the Honda SP 125, with some exclusive colours in the special edition:

  • Standard Variants: The standard variants get Pearl Igneous Black, Matt Axis Grey Metallic, Pearl Siren Blue, Imperial Red Metallic, and Matt Marvel Blue Metallic.
  • 25-Year Anniversary Edition: This variant comes with Mat Steel Black Metallic and Pearl Siren Blue, and has exclusive anniversary graphics with polished brown metallic alloy wheels.

The Honda SP 125 has some unique styling elements; it does not try to be a naked streetfighter like the Bajaj Pulsar NS 125, but keeps the traditional commuter silhouette while revamping it up with sharp, angular bodywork.

Lighting & Front Identity

The front end looks sharp and distinct, deviating slightly from the basic commuter image.

  • It has a sharp LED DC headlamp with excellent illumination and a modern light signature.
  • The headlamp has a body-coloured cowl with subtle graphic decals, making it look more aggressive.
Honda SP 125 on Double Stand

Side Profile & Rear Section

From the sides and rear, the motorcycle mostly exhibits some muscular proportions:

  • The side panels are sleek, and they travel neatly into an angular tail section.
  • The rear has a unique tail lamp, paired with a chunky, body-coloured grab rail for pillion safety.
  • The exhaust muffler is chrome-shielded, finally completing the lower half’s premium touch.

Practical Integration

If we look beyond aesthetics, this is a highly practical machine. It comes with a fully enclosed chain guard for reduced maintenance, and the latest version has a wider 100-section rear tyre, which means you get better traction and braking stability on wet tarmac. Meanwhile, the flat, single-piece seat is ample for both rider and pillion for longer city commutes.

Pros

  • Exceptionally refined and reliable 124-cc engine
  • Excellent real-world fuel efficiency
  • New TFT display with Bluetooth connectivity
  • Silent ACG starter mechanism

Cons

  • Lacks top-end power for highway overtaking
  • Firm rear suspension on broken roads
  • No ABS option available
  • Skinny rear tyre reduces high-speed confidence

Verdict

As a premium commuter, the Honda SP 125 does not attempt to be a sports bike, nor does it try to win you over with unnecessary, fancy gimmicks. It’s got its fundamentals clear; it gives you a refined 124 cc engine that is virtually vibration-free, and mileage efficiency that significantly cuts down your monthly running costs. Through its recent update, it only got better, with the 4.2-inch TFT screen and the USB Type-C port.

Some caveats worth addressing are the firm rear suspension and the lack of ABS. Otherwise, the package is mostly sorted out, with the bike’s feather-light handling and silent operation making city commutes completely stress-free. Overall, if you need a hassle-free, highly efficient, and modern daily workhorse that will last long beyond its warranty period, the Honda SP 125 is one compelling purchase to make.

Preetam summarises,

“The Honda SP 125 is a well-rounded product. While the CB Shine SP was already a benchmark in the segment, the SP 125 raises that bar.”

The SP 125 is great for city riding with its smooth engine and fuel efficiency. However, I feel the engine could use a little more power on highways. • Stylish with Room for Improvement - Disappointing Engine Performance
    3.0
    DLX Drum(Petrol)
The SP 125 looks great and rides smoothly, but the power could be better. It’s fuel-efficient, but the engine doesn’t feel strong enough for long highway rides. The maintenance cost is manageable, though. The engine performance of the Honda SP 125 is disappointing. It lacks power, especially when overtaking or riding on highways. The fuel consumption is okay, but it doesn’t make up for the weak engine. Not ideal for long rides.
