car&bike Expert Take
“The Land Rover Range Rover Sport finds a clean middle ground between soft comfort and fast cornering. Assembling it locally has also slashed prices a lot, making it an attractive buy in the high-end segment.”

For a long time, buying a high-end SUV meant giving up on driving fun. The third-generation Range Rover Sport attempted to fix that problem by offering a smaller, tighter alternative to the standard Range Rover. The most important update for the Indian market is this brand's decision to assemble the SUV locally from 2024, which has reduced the vehicle's current overall price significantly.

This change drops the asking price by nearly Rs. 24-29 lakh for the popular Dynamic HSE trims. You can pick between petrol and diesel options for this car, with both featuring mild-hybrid assistance. Car enthusiasts can check out the loud 4.4-Litre V8 in the imported SV Edition Two as well. Physicality-wise, it is an extremely big vehicle, yet it hides its size smartly behind simple styling.
Shams Raza Naqvi and Seshan Vijayraghvan from the car&bike team took turns to check out this SUV from the British manufacturer, and they had some interesting thoughts to share about it. You can check out both Shams and Seshan’s pieces, from which we have taken some insights and added them into this review as well.
You get a wide variety of drivetrain choices here, but the locally assembled six-cylinder units make the most sense for daily driving. Overall, the Range Rover Sport hides a punchy heart under its big clamshell bonnet.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission |
| 3.0-Litre Turbo Diesel | 346 bhp | 700 Nm | Eight-speed automatic |
| 3.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 345–394 bhp | 550 Nm | Eight-speed automatic |
| 4.4-Litre Twin-Turbo V8 | 626 bhp | 750 Nm | Eight-speed automatic |
| Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) | 543 bhp | 800 Nm | Eight-speed automatic |
Driving Experience: Real World
Real-world situations quickly reveal this large SUV's true nature.
City Driving
In heavy traffic, the 3.0-litre diesel feels incredibly easy to use. The 700 Nm of torque comes alive quickly at 1,500 rpm, easily moving the vehicle's heavy weight. It gets up to speed fast. Meanwhile, the eight-speed automatic gearbox shifts through gears smoothly.
According to Seshan,
“The power delivery is quick and linear, whereas the torque kicks in early so you barely feel any lag in the lower revs.”
Highway Driving
Out on the open highway, the Range Rover Sport turns into a fast express. It hits triple-digit speeds remarkably quick, and the engine stays quiet at cruising speeds. However, you will notice some wind noise around the large side mirrors when pushing hard. Overtaking slower trucks requires just a light tap on the accelerator.

Off-Road Driving
Leave the tarmac, and Land Rover’s tough off-road hardware takes over. The four-wheel-drive system easily manages muddy trails. You can raise the air suspension to clear deep ruts, while the 900 mm water wading capacity makes passing flooded monsoon streets a breeze.
The Range Rover Sport adopts a simple design angle, dropping excessive chrome for a cleaner, quieter aesthetic. It looks incredibly polished from every side.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Range Rover Sport | Porsche Cayenne | BMW X7 |
| Length | 4,946 mm | 4,930 mm | 5,181 mm |
| Width | 2,047 mm | 1,983 mm | 2,000 mm |
| Height | 1,820 mm | 1,698 mm | 1,835 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,997 mm | 2,895 mm | 3,105 mm |
Compared to the Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X7, the Sport is a much wider vehicle at 2,047 mm, while it is noticeably shorter than the other two, and stands tall at 1,820 mm.

The Range Rover Sport has struck a great balance between traditional bulk and modern shape.
Front Profile
- Slim digital LED headlights feature daytime running lights and image projection.
- The dark front grille gives the face a rather bold and imposing attitude.
- A large, smooth clamshell bonnet completes the view at the front.

Side Profile
- Flush door handles pop out smoothly and retract securely when locked.
- The Dynamic HSE has 22-inch alloy wheels that fill the arches perfectly.
- A firm shoulder line connects the front and rear, keeping its classic posture intact.
Rear Profile
- Thin LED tail lamps wrap around the edges, adding a wide visual shape.
- A dark lower diffuser hides the exhaust pipes neatly out of sight.
- The upright tailgate keeps practicality intact without ruining the sloping roofline.
Cabin isolation inside this vehicle is top-notch, shutting out the noisy street traffic effectively, while the minimalist approach removes almost all physical buttons.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard greets you with vast expanses of soft leather and high-quality trim. The build is mostly excellent, though a few lower-dash plastics feel somewhat utilitarian for a vehicle commanding a price over a crore. The 13.1-inch Pivi Pro central screen handles almost everything, including the climate controls. Sun glare rarely washes out this bright display.

Seating Comfort
Front Row
The 22-way power-adjustable front seats feature heating, cooling, and massage functions. You sit high up, enjoying a clear view over traffic. Long road trips are entirely pain-free.
Second Row
Rear passengers get lots of legroom thanks to the nearly three-metre wheelbase. The fancy leather seats can recline up to 37 degrees, letting you sleep nicely on long journeys.

Shams praises this feature,
“The seats finished in semi-Aniline leather give good comfort and they can be reclined as well, by a good 37 degrees which is nice.”
Features That Improve Daily Use
- 13.1-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen with fast responses
- 13.7-inch digital driver display with clear graphics
- Four-zone automatic climate control system
- Active noise cancellation through headrest speakers
- An air purification system to filter out city pollution
Thanks to local assembly via the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) route, the Range Rover Sport is now priced far more attractively, and this big price drop makes it extremely tempting against its fully imported German rivals.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine | Ex-Showroom Price |
Dynamic HSE 3.0 Diesel | 3.0-Litre Diesel | Rs. 1.38 Crore |
Dynamic HSE 3.0 Petrol | 3.0-Litre Petrol | Rs. 1.38 Crore |
PHEV Autobiography 4.4 Petrol | 3.0-Litre Petrol / P460e–P550e Electric Motor | Rs. 1.96 Crore |
Autobiography 4.4 Petrol | 4.4-Litre V8 Petrol | Rs. 1.97 Crore |
SV Edition Two 4.4 Petrol | 4.4-Litre V8 Petrol | Rs. 2.75 Crore |
Mileage is rarely a deciding factor for buyers in this class, but nobody likes frequent fuel stops. Thankfully, the Sport’s large 86-litre fuel tank ensures decent touring range.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
| Engine & Transmission | Claimed Mileage (ARAI) | Real-World City | Real-World Highway |
| 3.0-Litre Diesel Automatic | 11.5 kmpl | 7-8 kmpl | 10-12 kmpl |
| 3.0-Litre Petrol Automatic | 8.7 kmpl | 5-6 kmpl | 8-9 kmpl |
| Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) | 122 km (WLTP) | 82 kmpl | 100 kmpl |
| 4.4-Litre V8 Automatic | 7.5 kmpl | 4-5 kmpl | 6-7 kmpl |
British cars generally score very well on global crash tests, and this large SUV is no exception, with its firm chassis acting as a highly secure safety cage.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The Range Rover Sport has six airbags as standard. Its aluminium-heavy structure pulled off a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP, scoring highly for adult protection in particular. The heavy doors shut with a hard thud, confirming the vehicle's tough build.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
Level 2 ADAS is prominent here. You get Radar Cruise Control, Lane-Keep Assist, and a highly effective blind-spot monitor. The surround-view camera is also brilliantly clear, making parking this large vehicle incredibly easy.
Safety Verdict
Considering its heavy weight, strong braking hardware, and vast electronic safety net, you will feel thoroughly protected inside. It handles emergency stops without hard nose-dives, keeping passengers secure at all times.
The new Range Rover Sport arrives heavily armed with modern electronics. Land Rover has dumped the old dual-screen layout and given us a cleaner, more usable setup; it looks incredibly neat.
Infotainment and Interface
A massive 13.1-inch curved touchscreen takes centre stage here. It runs Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro software, which boots up quickly and responds to taps without frustrating lag. You get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, keeping your phone tucked away safely. A bright 13.7-inch digital driver display also sits behind the steering wheel, offering highly customisable dials and maps.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
This luxury tank pampers you unconditionally. It brings 22-way power-adjustable front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. A rich Meridian sound system blasts your favourite tunes with crisp bass, hiding its speakers smartly behind the rear doors and headrests.
Additionally, there is four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, active noise cancellation, a heads-up display, an air purifier, and an optional front centre console refrigerator.

Range Rover Sport Boot Space
You get 450 litres of usable boot space, which expands massively when you fold the rear seats flat. While it easily swallows a family’s weekend luggage or golf clubs, the high loading lip forces you to lift heavy bags quite high off the ground. It lacks a third row of seats, so all that real estate strictly serves cargo and five passengers. The boot floor, meanwhile, sits flush, allowing you to slide boxes in smoothly without catching an edge.
Air suspension is standard on the Sport's models, effectively hiding the vehicle's immense weight. It does a good job for the most part, but the impact from bumps and ruts is still unavoidable sometimes.

City Driving
Going through crowded streets in this massive machine feels surprisingly easy. You sit incredibly high up, enjoying a great view over normal traffic. The steering turns lightly at slow speeds, and the car leaps into tiny gaps quickly, making sure you never feel bogged down by its sheer size. However, its wide stance means you also have to watch your mirrors on tight roads constantly.
Highway Driving
Out on the open stretch, it covers long distances effortlessly. Wind noise mostly stays outside, while the cabin remains a quiet place, making long trips incredibly relaxing. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly as well, keeping the engine in its sweet spot.
Seshan observes,
"The Range Rover Sport feels surefooted and extremely planted even while you are doing triple-digit speeds."

Off-Road Driving
Do not let the luxury tag fool you; this beast glides over mud and rocks. The clever Terrain Response 2 system handles tricky surfaces automatically, adapting the throttle and traction control on the fly. You can raise the ride height using the air suspension, allowing the vehicle to wade through 900 mm of standing water.
The Range Rover Sport’s Indian lineup is straightforward but expensive. But thanks to the local assembly strategy starting recently, the asking price has dropped significantly, making it much more sensible than before. The Dynamic SE and Dynamic HSE trims offer plenty of standard kit, but stepping up gives you access to the best technology the brand has to offer.
| Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Dynamic HSE 3.0 Diesel | 3.0-Litre Diesel, Eight-speed automatic | Semi-Aniline leather seats, 22-way electric memory front massage seats, and Digital LED headlights | Rs. 1.38 Crore |
| Dynamic HSE 3.0 Petrol | 3.0-Litre Petrol, Eight-speed automatic | Electronic air suspension, Terrain Response 2, and 22-inch alloy wheels | Rs. 1.38 Crore |
| PHEV Autobiography 4.4 Petrol | 3.0-Litre PHEV, Eight-speed automatic | Extended Range, electronically controlled suspension systems, and All-Wheel Steering | Rs. 1.96 Crore |
| Autobiography 4.4 Petrol | 4.4-Litre Petrol, Eight-speed automatic | Sport Dynamics, Heads-Up Display, and Executive Class Rear Seats | Rs. 1.97 Crore |
| SV Edition Two 4.4 Petrol | 4.4-Litre Petrol, Eight-speed automatic | Carbon ceramic brakes, 23-inch carbon fibre wheels, and SV Mode button | Rs. 2.75 Crore |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- No third row variant
- No physical buttons to control the climate
- No standard rear-wheel steering on lower trims
Picking the right version relies entirely on what you want most from the Range Rover Sport: punchy acceleration or long-distance cruising abilities.
For the Urban Executive: Dynamic HSE Petrol
If your daily route involves navigating through thick city traffic with occasional weekend trips, pick the Dynamic HSE Petrol. Its 3.0-litre petrol engine runs incredibly quietly, isolating you from the chaos outside.
For the Long-Distance Traveller: Dynamic HSE Diesel
If you regularly cross state borders, the Dynamic HSE Diesel makes complete sense. The massive 700 Nm of torque means you never run out of breath at the top end. It cruises at triple digits while sipping fuel at a reasonable rate, dropping your fuel stops significantly.
For the Practical Buyer: Dynamic SE Diesel
If you want the badge and the road presence without spending the absolute maximum, there is a very basic Dynamic SE Diesel variant that gives you that same styling and mechanical hardware. It skips a few fancy interior bits, but you still get a proper luxury experience at a lower price point.

In the premium luxury SUV segment, the Range Rover Sport battles some highly established German rivals. The Porsche Cayenne remains the benchmark for sharp handling, while the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS offer massive cabins with three rows of seating. The Rover sits somewhere in the middle, providing strong off-road ability with undeniable badge value.
Model | Engine | Power / Torque | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Range Rover Sport | 3.0-Litre Petrol / Diesel / PHEV | 345-626 bhp / 550-800 Nm | Exceptional road presence and strong off-road skills | Rs. 1.38 – Rs. 2.75 Crore |
| Porsche Cayenne | 3.0-Litre Petrol, 4.0-Litre Twin-Turbo V8 | 348-493 bhp / 500-660 Nm | Phenomenal handling and the beloved sports car feel | Rs. 1.36 – Rs. 1.42 Crore |
| BMW X7 | 3.0-Litre Petrol / Diesel | 340-382 bhp / 520-720 Nm | Excellent tech, seven seats, and a plush ride | Rs. 1.26 – Rs. 1.33 Crore |
Which Premium Luxury SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Porsche Cayenne if driving pleasure and sharp cornering sit at the top of your priority list.
- Choose the BMW X7 if you frequently carry more than five passengers and want absolute ride comfort in your journeys.
- Choose the Range Rover Sport if you want some unrivalled off-road capability mixed with a highly desirable brand image.
Pros
- Outstanding road presence with sleek exterior lines
- The 3.0-Litre diesel engine offers massive pulling power
- Excellent noise insulation keeps the cabin incredibly quiet
- Highly capable off-road hardware right out of the box
Cons
- Missing a third row of seats, unlike its German rivals
- Large 22-inch wheels ruin the low-speed ride quality over broken roads
- Touchscreen controls for everything can distract the driver
- Patchy long-term reliability record
Verdict
The Range Rover Sport has a deeply satisfying combination of raw capability and old-school luxury, and the switch to local assembly has taken down its prices much more, making it value-wise better than its immediate rivals. While you are inside it, you will clearly notice how much respect it demands, how it eats bad tarmac for breakfast, and the effort it puts in wrapping you with rich leather while doing so.
Sure, the lack of physical buttons may annoy some, and the missing third row compels people to take a look at the BMW X7. But if you want a vehicle that truly feels special every time you grab the door handle, this British brute delivers.
As Shams summarises,
“The Sport gives you that legendary SUV feel the brand is well known for. It’s a car that tries to perform too many roles all together and excels in most. This makes it a worthy counterpart of the famed Range Rover.”
