Expert Review on Skoda Kodiaq RS
car&bike Expert Take
“The standard Skoda Kodiaq has long been a favourite for buyers seeking a practical, luxury-packed family SUV. The latest RS version changes things up by dropping in a high-performance engine and stiffening the suspension. It uniquely brings sports car speeds into a three-row layout.”
Skoda Auto India has introduced the Kodiaq RS, bringing the famous 'RS' badge to an SUV body style in the country for the very first time. It arrives as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), and priced at Rs. 66.99 lakh (ex-showroom), this variant sits above the standard L&K trim.
The car targets buyers who want a large vehicle but still expect high speed and sharp handling. It’s a high-performance machine that reaches 100 kmph in just 6.3 seconds, while it’s also a family vehicle configured strictly as a seven-seater.
Seshan Vijayraghvan of car&bike had tested this SUV recently. He points out,
“Skoda has kept the practical bits intact, but the mechanical upgrades completely transform how it behaves on the road.”
The Kodiaq RS uses the EA888 2.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, which powers the Octavia RS as well.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 261 bhp | 400 Nm | Seven-speed automatic | All-Wheel Drive |
Key Takeaways
- The car’s top speed is rated at 231 kmph.
- Power goes to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
City Driving Experience
But despite its massive power output, it’s a very efficient city rider.
- The engine feels quite refined at crawling speeds.
- The progressive steering system lightens the wheel during slow traffic.
- The throttle feels relaxed in Comfort mode, so expect little to no jerky movements.
- The seven-speed DSG shifts smoothly, though it might hesitate a bit from a standstill.
Highway Driving Experience
Once it reaches the open stretches, the car’s performance character comes to life.
- The mid-range torque allows for quick overtakes without pushing the engine too hard.
- The all-wheel-drive system keeps the car planted around fast, challenging corners.
- The upgraded disc brakes bite hard and shed the car’s speed within seconds.
Seshan notes,
“Whether overtaking on the highway or accelerating out of corners, the engine feels considerably stronger than the regular Kodiaq.”
The styling of the Kodiaq RS remains familiar, but Skoda has replaced most of the chrome with gloss black elements to give it a more aggressive look.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Skoda Kodiaq RS | Standard Skoda Kodiaq | Audi Q5 |
| Length | 4,761 mm | 4,758 mm | 4,682 mm |
| Width | 1,864 mm | 1,864 mm | 1,893 mm |
| Height | 1,682 mm | 1,679 mm | 1,662 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,789 mm | 2,791 mm | 2,819 mm |
| Kerb Weight | 1,850 - 1,902 kg | 1,774 - 1,825 kg | 1,820 kg |
| Ground Clearance | 194 mm | 194 mm | 200 mm |
Key Takeaways
- The RS variant is slightly longer than the standard Kodiaq.
- The 194 mm ground clearance clears large speed breakers without any issues.
- The footprint is highly practical for daily use despite the performance focus.
Build Quality & Materials
Being a CBU import, the Kodiaq RS feels incredibly well-put together. The doors are solid, while the interior uses soft-touch plastics, suede materials, and red stitching. Everything feels tightly put together.
Skoda has also infused small details here and there to give the RS a much sharper look than the regular model.
Still, Seshan observes one thing,
"Even then, the Kodiaq RS doesn't shout for attention."
Front Profile
- The front face has a blacked-out grille with a prominent vRS badge.
- There are advanced Matrix LED headlamps, offering high visibility at night.
- The front bumper has some large air intakes that specifically cool the engine.
Side Profile
- From the side, the 20-inch 'Elias' alloy wheels stand out beside the wheel arches.
- The bright red brake callipers are clearly visible, resting behind the black spokes.
Rear Profile
- The rear gets a specific bumper and a roof spoiler that lends to its sporty profile.
- Dual stainless-steel exhaust tips sit further below, completing the rear design.
The cabin goes for an all-dark theme, intentionally dropping the lighter colours of the standard Kodiaq for a sportier layout.
Cabin Layout and Quality
- The dashboard uses black perforated leather and suede.
- You will notice red contrast stitching across the seats and door panels.
- There’s a new three-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel with the RS badge.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
- The front sports seats support you tightly during fast cornering.
- Both seats get power adjustments with memory settings.
- They also have heating and ventilation functions.
Second Row
- Space in the middle row is generous for tall adults.
- The bench can also slide and recline for long journeys.
- Three passengers can sit side-by-side inside this car comfortably.
Third Row
- The third row can get a little congested.
- It’s ideally meant for children or short city trips.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- The 12.9-inch touchscreen
- The 10.25-inch digital driver display
- A 13-speaker Canton audio system
- Dual wireless phone charging pads
Skoda sells the Kodiaq RS in India as a fully imported, one-variant unit.
| Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Skoda Kodiaq RS | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol (Automatic) | Rs. 66.99 Lakh |
The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine prioritises power over economy, so you get a naturally lower fuel economy from this car. Its ARAI-estimated mileage is 14.86 kmpl, while the fuel tank capacity is 58 litres, which can realistically cover roughly 500 to 700 kilometres per single refill.
Engine | ARAI Claimed Mileage | User-reported city mileage | User-reported highway mileage |
2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 14.86 kmpl | 7–8 kmpl | 10–12 kmpl |
Not only does the RS have a five-star Euro NCAP rating, but it’s also packed well enough with modern safety technology to protect families on fast highway runs.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
- The car gets nine airbags as standard.
- The body shell is stiff and uses high-strength steel.
- It comes with ISOFIX mounts for child seats.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
- Skoda provides a complete Level 2 ADAS suite.
- It has adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
- The electronic stability control also works closely with the all-wheel-drive system.
The interior of this car gets some tactile "Smart Dials": three rotary knobs below the infotainment. They provide climate control, heating and cooling, fan speed, volume, etc.
Infotainment and Interface
- A 12.9-inch touchscreen sits on the dashboard.
- It runs the main infotainment menus.
- It connects to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto quickly.
- The 10.25-inch digital display for the driver features unique RS graphics.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- The centre console holds two wireless charging pads.
- Both pads have built-in cooling to prevent phones from overheating.
- The 13-speaker Canton audio system feels very loud and crisp.
- There is also three-zone climate control inside the cabin.
- With all seven seats upright, the boot provides 281 litres of space.
- Folding the third row down flat opens up a massive 786 litres of cargo room.
- Dropping the second row further unlocks 1,976 litres for carrying heavier cargo.
Seshan observes,
“The RS package doesn't compromise the qualities that make the Kodiaq such a practical family SUV.”
The RS sacrifices the soft, cloud-like ride of the standard Kodiaq for sharp, confident cornering.
City Driving
- The 20-inch wheels and thin tyres make the ride quality firm over broken roads.
- Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC Plus), however, softens the suspension in Comfort mode for daily commutes.
- The steering remains light at slow parking speeds.
Highway Driving
- High-speed stability is excellent; the car is rarely ever challenged by crosswinds.
- Its heavy body stays flat at triple-digit speeds.
- Wind noise is also kept out of the cabin effectively.
Seshan notices this about the driving mechanics,
"Here, the steering becomes more direct as steering inputs increase."
Skoda offers the Kodiaq RS in exactly one configuration.
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
Skoda Kodiaq RS | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol (Automatic) | 20-inch alloys, DCC Plus, RS styling | Buyers wanting high performance with seven seats |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- A soft ride quality over bad city roads
- Ventilated rear seats
- Factory-fitted powered side steps
The standard Kodiaq offers identical space and better comfort for Rs. 20 lakh less. Honestly, buying the RS is more of an emotional investment than a practical decision. You buy this car specifically for the engine and the handling. If you precisely need a seven-seater but also want the acceleration and cornering ability of a sports sedan, the Kodiaq RS fits that exact requirement. But do note that Skoda has only released one batch of this car so far, and all 50 units were spoken for quickly. So, you’ll likely have to wait for a second allocation.
The Rs. 66.99 lakh price tag puts the Kodiaq RS against entry-level luxury SUVs and its own standard sibling. It also squares off against the Audi Q5.
| Model | Engine | Power / Torque | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Skoda Kodiaq RS | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 261 bhp / 400 Nm | High performance, 7 seats, adaptive suspension | Rs. 66.99 Lakh |
| Audi Q5 | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 261 bhp / 370 Nm | Highly refined ride, plush 5-seater cabin | Rs. 65.55 - 70.73 Lakh |
| Skoda Kodiaq | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 201 bhp / 320 Nm | Comfort-focused, identical space | Rs. 36.99 - 46.99 Lakh |
Which Premium SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Skoda Kodiaq RS if you want serious horsepower and sharp handling in a seven-seat package.
- Choose the Audi Q5 if you only need five seats and want a quiet, highly refined suspension.
- Choose the Skoda Kodiaq if you want a practical family car and prefer saving a large amount of money.
Pros
- The 2.0-litre engine makes 261 bhp/400 Nm which is 60 bhp/80 Nm more than the regular model.
- The adaptive suspension instantly firms up in Sport mode which reduces body roll through corners.
- Peak torque hits at a low 1,650 rpm, providing a muscular mid-range that ensures effortless performance.
- Exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels, red brake callipers, and gloss black accents give it a sporty presence.
- The practical three-row, seven-seater layout remains, along with Level 2 ADAS and premium audio.
Cons
- Imported as a CBU model, the steep makes it undeniably expensive for buyers.
- It completely drops the front seat massage function that is standard on the regular trim.
- The allocation is strictly limited to a batch of just 50 units that is already fully booked.
Verdict
The standard Skoda Kodiaq is already one of the most complete premium family SUVs on sale. The Kodiaq RS builds on that foundation and offers one thing that such premium family SUVs lack, which is excitement!
The extra power, stronger torque, adaptive suspension and sharper steering make it a more engaging SUV to drive, while the subtle styling upgrades and sportier cabin add further distinction. All that while retaining everything that makes the standard Kodiaq appealing, like the spacious interior, seven-seat practicality and an extensive feature list.
Seshan Vijayraghvan said in his review:
It delivers comfort, practicality, refinement and impressive road manners in a well-rounded package. The Kodiaq RS builds on that foundation and offers one thing that such premium family SUVs lack – Excitement!
For buyers looking for a premium family SUV that offers a little more involvement behind the wheel, without compromising comfort or usability, the Kodiaq RS makes for a good choice.
