Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Expert Review
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is one of the most iconic off-roaders ever made, and it will remain so for a long time in the future as well. Owning this go-anywhere sensation is a dream come true for most SUV lovers, without a doubt.
How’s the Design?
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited gets a square-box-on-ladder frame with its vertical slats for the front grille and upright windshield, along with wide fenders as well. It has been tuned well, and the windshield is raked backwards just a bit, while the front fenders have vents for relieving air pressure. Round LED headlamps complete the signature Wrangler look, which is immensely appealing. This is also a big off-roader, and you will like the look of the signature seven grille slats along with the turn indicators/DRLs shifted towards the bigger and flared fenders. The rear has more detailed taillights this time, along with slightly longer bumpers at both rear and front. There is more aluminum usage, leading to a lighter weight figure overall. The windshield can now be completely dropped flat for the experience that most people wish to savor.
How does it perform?
Petrol | 2 litre | 268 PS | 400 Nm |
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited now has a 2-litre petrol engine that makes good power and torque. It is turbocharged and once you rev up the engine, you will understand how powerful it actually is, outstripping the earlier diesel counterpart seamlessly with power delivery. There is direct injection for the engine, and this makes it easier at around 2,500-3,00o RPM. You will love the quick responses and how well the SUV shifts along with almost-negligible noise. You will also appreciate the powerful turbo and how it gets you moving seamlessly with no hassles. The 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission setup also works well, while the Wrangler can touch 100 kmph in only 8 seconds. The off roader is a sheer delight to drive.
How’s the mileage?
• City- 6.3 kmpl
• Highway- 9.1 kmpl
How’s the driving experience?
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited comes with a body-on-frame setup, along with five-link optimized independent suspension systems at all corners. It also has chunkier anti-roll bars and box-section control arms for higher ride quality and stability alike. There is a little jumpiness at lower speeds, although mostly you are firmly in control, and it corners fabulously at the same time. The steering is light but weighted and gives you more confidence at highway speeds as well. Despite the larger tyres, there is nothing to bother about in terms of precision. Visibility is also great with the Wrangler Unlimited. The only issue is that the front bumper protrudes a bit, and the driver may not see the same. The Wrangler can take anything, and you can go anywhere with it.
How’s the off-roading capability?
The Wrangler Unlimited is a supreme off-roader, taking care of metering out its torque, and you will always have supreme control over tricky terrains. There is the Selec-Trac 4WD setup from Jeep with the lever for two and four-wheel driving modes while in low gear and a 2.72:1 ratio for trickier scenarios. The system works to make the Wrangler Unlimited a true go-anywhere vehicle. Give it some added throttle and the SUV will climb up anywhere, even on steep inclines, without even wanting a dekko at the transfer case lock in 4L or 4H as well. The massive tyres, bigger brakes, durable skid plates, and robust axle tubes are other useful features.
What’s the interior like?
The cabin is new in the Wrangler Unlimited. It offers luxurious Sahara trimmed materials and seating. There is double-stitched upholstery in leather available for buyers along with several grab handles. The overall fit and finish has improved considerably now as well. There is the brand-new touch screen infotainment unit with some connectivity features and a new digital display for the driver. The driving position is excellent with great views, and you will feel on top of the world in this beast! The flat dashboard offers a lot more space. The power window switches are positioned lower than the earlier version, while the footwell may seem narrower. The doors are removable and so is the roof. The rear setback is slightly more upright than it should have been, as many will feel. However, space has gone up considerably here. The tailgate opens to a flat boot with the speaker integrated here as well. The in-built door/roof bolt rack and the completely washable interiors (without any fear of damage) make the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited a complete lifestyle and adventure vehicle.
Tech and infotainment
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited comes with several features, including the ParkSense Rear Park Assist, Rear Cross Path detection, UConnect 8.4-inch touch screen infotainment unit, and a digital driver’s display unit. There is also Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with USB Type-C ports and a 12V port. There is a reversing camera along with parking sensors too.
Safety equipment
Safety features on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited include hill descent control, hill assist control, airbags, and ABS with EBD. There is also rear cross path detection with rear park assist among other useful safety equipment.
Which variant to buy?
The Jeep Wrangler comes in the Unlimited and Rubicon variants. The former only has one derivative, and that is the one that you should look at.
Which cars compete in the segment?
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited does not really have a seasoned rival. Off-roaders like the Force Gurkha and Mahindra Thar are in sizably lower segments and are smaller cars. The Land Rover Defender is in a higher category in terms of the price point. It does not quite compare to luxurious SUVs from leading brands at these price points as well. It is a unique off-roader and does not have any competition.
Verdict (Value for Money)
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is ideal for those who love off-roading and venturing into the known. It has the legendary Jeep off-roading credentials, a stylish design, plenty of road presence, a powerful engine, better interiors and features, and a certain brand value and statement that is hard to match. Yes, the price is steep, but connoisseurs will be happy paying the premium for this one-of-a-kind offering from the brand.
