Tata Altroz Review and Opinion - Top Things to Know
The Tata Altroz is one of the few premium hatchbacks still on sale in India amidst the huge and trending demand of SUVs. It was first launched in 2020, and the recent facelift has kept it modern for recent times, and relevant amidst the competition. Bilal Firfiray and Seshan Vijayraghvan tested both the diesel manual and the CNG versions. Here are the five key takeaways from the Altroz's in-depth first drive impression already live on our website.

- The Altroz has always been stunning to look at.
- Despite the changes, the facelift more of refines its design now.
- The hatchback gets sharper edges, fresh LED DRLs, and a streamlined bumper.

Seshan has detailed the changes on the facelifted Altroz saying, "One instruction that Tata designers had with this facelift is that it should be recognisable as the Altroz, and they have done their job to the tee. Describing their work with the facelift – both inside and out – in a word would be ‘smart’. The headlamps and bonnet shape haven’t changed. But the headlamps now get a new eyebrow DRL with twin-barrel LEDs inside the smoked finish. Even the grille connecting the two headlamps is new, but adding a connected lighting strip here would have made it more 'family-friendly'. What’s even more family-friendly is the lower bumper, which takes cues from the Nexon with flared vertical vents on either side. There are horizontal louvres lower down the bumper, making it look more modern than before."
- The cabin now exudes a more premium quotient than the outgoing model.
- This is thanks to the new upholstery and the interior with ambient lighting.
- Of course, the bigger 10.2-inch infotainment screen adds on to the list of features upgraded.
- Then, there are the improved seats with extended under-thigh support.

Seshan also explains the idea behind the tweaks made to the Altroz's cabin to make it look more premium. He says, "The same ‘smart’ changes are seen on the inside, where the layout of the cabin isn’t changed, but it still feels fresh and modern. First up, the dashboard, which earlier had a single gloss panel running across, is replaced with many cuts and crease elements while retaining the shape. All of it is quite smartly executed."
- The Altroz was always a feature-packed hatchback, but now it comprises more elements.
- And be it for comfort, convenience, or safety, it's got most of it all.
- A 360-degree camera, wireless phone charger, and connected car tech, making it a compelling alternative in its segment.

Seshan further listed the several features detailing the upgrade. He continues, "Then there are feature additions, many of which are the all-new 10.25-inch wide touchscreen, which is now standard across the Tata range. In fact the Altroz is the last one to get this touchscreen in the portfolio. Similarly, the two-spoke steering wheel is also added here, borrowed from the elder siblings. Behind the new steering sits an all-digital driver’s display – the range-topping petrol gets a bigger 10.25-inch while the rest of the range gets a slightly smaller unit. Lower down the dashboard is a new capacitive touch panel, the likes of which were first seen in the Nexon and are now seen across the range. However, since the overall layout of the dashboard hasn’t changed, this panel is not a direct copy-paste from the others but gets a different shape."
- Out of the three engine options, the diesel and CNG models have an impressive claimed fuel efficiency of 23.6kmpl and 26.9 kmpkg, respectively.
- However, it’s the diesel if you are looking for a torquey motor with a still good mileage.
- On the other hand, the CNG version is the more economic option if laid-back city driving is fine with you.

Bilal has an important thing to point out about the CNG Altroz, "One talking point about all Tata CNG offerings is how there’s no real noticeable difference between the CNG mode and petrol mode for the uninitiated. Sure, there’s a little extra vibration that seeps in the CNG mode, and it's very slightly less noisy in the petrol mode. However, these changes are noticeable only if you actively look for them. However, with just 72 bhp of power and 103 Nm of twisting force to play with, this isn’t the spritliest car out there. It takes its sweet time to build up speed, and you need to plan the overtakes every single time, be it overtaking a bicycle in the city or long trucks on the highways."
- The Altroz still boasts a five-star crash safety rating for which it has been renowned across markets.
- It boasts six airbags as standard, making it a secure choice for families.
- Other safety features further augment the Altroz's proposition in the premium hatchback segment.

Seshan finally points out where the Altroz stands in terms of the competition saying, "In the company of the Baleno and i20, the Altroz possesses a higher safety quotient, more practicality and powertrain choices. All in all, the Altroz facelift feels like a car that’s grown up without losing its original charm. It’s smarter, better equipped, and still very much rooted in the needs of the Indian buyer. Whether you’re a commuter, a small family, or just someone who enjoys a solid hatchback, the Altroz now makes an even stronger case for itself. It may not be perfect, but it sure feels complete."
Pros
- Most modern looks in the segment
- New variants including CNG
- Feature-packed refreshed interior
Cons
- Mediocre finesse
- Petrol model not fuel-efficient
Verdict
The Tata Altroz facelift brings in modern tech with a premium design, especially with its new bold grille and LED lighting. Features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen are latest to its segment, but the good thing is, it continues to boast a five-star safety rating (Bharat NCAP) across petrol, diesel, and CNG variants. So, with multiple powertrain options, adequate comfort, safety, and style; it shines in its segment.
