2026 Tata Safari Petrol Review And Opinion - Top Five Things To Know

Seshan Vijayraghvan from our team reviewed the latest iterations of the Tata Harrier and Safari petrol models. While the 2026 Safari hasn't changed much from its existing diesel model, the new 1.5 Hyperion model introduces a petrol model for the first time in the Safari. Here are the top five things to know from the first drive impressions of the 2026 Tata Harrier and Safari 1.5 Hyperion review:

  • The new 1.5L Hyperion model is powered by a turbo-petrol engine.
  • It delivers 168bhp and 280Nm of torque offering a smooth and refined driving experience.
  • It also comes with improved NVH levels and a 0-100 kmph time between 9.5-10.2 seconds.

Seshan says, “For these OMEGArc-based SUVs, the Hyperion motor is offered at a higher state of tune. So, it now produces 168 bhp and 280 Nm. Power is right up there with the diesel, though torque is about 40 Nm lower. That said, spec sheets rarely tell the full story when it comes to real-world performance.”

  • The SUVs maintain their reputation for excellent ride quality and handling.
  • This is paired with improved stability and grip.
  • And all of the above, despite of a slight weight reduction.

Seshan mentions, “On the road, the Harrier and Safari continue to deliver the ride and handling they’re known for, despite the slight change in weight with the new engine. If anything, the Harrier actually feels quicker while staying nicely planted. Tata hasn’t shared an official 0–100 kmph time yet, but I managed to sprint the Harrier petrol to 100 kmph in a little over 10 seconds, a couple of seconds quicker than the diesel.”

  • The petrol Safari retains its bold design and overall proportions.
  • However, now there are two new Nitro Crimson and Carbon Black colour options.
  • Additionally, customers get feature upgrades like a 14.5-inch Samsung touchscreen, dual-channel dashcam, and auto-dipping ORVMs.

Seshan always liked the Safari's looks and says, “Both SUVs are now offered in two new variants, including a Red #Dark edition. In the Harrier’s case, it’s Fearless Ultra and Fearless Ultra Red #Dark. On the other hand, for Safari it’s Accomplished Ultra and Accomplished Ultra Red #Dark. Highlights for the top-sped Red #Dark variant include - the all-black body colour with red accents on the grille, red callipers, and red Harrier or Safari badging on the doors.”

  • The Safari's cabin gets a premium makeover for 2026.
  • It boasts Oyster White and Titan Brown interior themes.
  • Tata Motors has also provided ventilated seats, and a 10-speaker JBL sound system with Dolby Atmos.

Seshan is impressed with the infotainment system and says, “The standout feature, however, is the massive 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system borrowed from the Harrier EV. It uses a Samsung QLED panel, delivering sharp and vibrant visuals. One feature I’m less sold on is the Arcade App suite, which includes OTT and streaming apps like YouTube, Prime Video and JioSaavn. While it makes sense in an EV during charging stops, its usefulness in an ICE car is limited since these apps only work when the car is in park.”

  • Tata Motors has priced the petrol Safari competitively as expected.
  • This makes the Safari quite attractive alternatives to diesel models.
  • It will compete with rivals like the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, and even the Jeep Compass.

Seshan concludes saying, “The new petrol engine is good alternative to the diesel engine of Harrier and Safari. In short, this new petrol engine fits the Harrier and Safari well. If you were on the fence purely because they were diesel-only, they now deserve a serious look. The fact that Tata is also bundling some smarter tech and features exclusively with the petrol versions only adds to the appeal.”

Pros

  • Spectacular styling and road presence
  • Top-notch five-star safety
  • Plush dual-tone interior
  • Satisfactory third-row

Cons

  • ADAS only in a few variants
  • Touchscreen lacks haptic feedback
  • No AWD option

Verdict

The Tata Safari’s facelift got in a fresh look with plenty of colour options, including a first-in-segment dual-tone option, and new features to boot. It’s still a symbol of authority with a premium, spacious cabin, and top-notch safety. It’s priced right making it a no-brainer buy.
