car&bike Expert Take

“The Scorpio-N feels like a proper evolution of the original big-bodied Scorpio. It maintains the rugged character and road presence, but adds refinement, improved ride quality and modern tech. The design may be a little safe, but the driving experience is a giant leap forward.”

Few SUVs in India have the kind of legacy that the Mahindra Scorpio has. First launched in 2002, the model quickly became one of the most recognisable SUVs in the country. The latest Mahindra Scorpio-N is the third generation of that lineage and comes after almost two decades of continuous popularity.
Mahindra internally referred to the project as Z101, and expectations were naturally high. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar reviewed the SUV in 2022 and his insights are shared throughout this review. According to Siddharth, the new SUV is more like a complete re-engineering than an update, with no major components carried over from the previous generation.

The Scorpio-N follows the brand's traditional formula of a body-on-frame chassis, powerful petrol and diesel engines and optional four-wheel drive. At the same time, Mahindra has added modern technology, better cabin quality and much better ride and handling. With rivals such as the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Hyundai Alcazar now in the same space, the Scorpio-N is now in a space where buyers expect more than just rugged capability but modern comfort as well.
Siddharth summed up the experience during his drive:
“It's a completely different car. The refinement, steering feel and overall ride quality is all a huge leap forward.”

Pros

  • Strong road presence and classic Scorpio identity
  • Powerful petrol and diesel engines
  • Optional Four Wheel Drive capabilities
  • Much improved ride and handling
  • Solid safety credentials with a five-star rating

Cons

  • The third row feels cramped for adults
  • Interior fit and finish could be improved
  • Touchscreen resolution appears quite dated

Verdict

The Mahindra Scorpio-N is one of the biggest generational upgrades the model has ever received. While the design plays it safe, the improvements beneath the skin are significant. Ride quality, steering feel and overall refinement have all improved dramatically, transforming the Scorpio from a rugged utility SUV to a much more balanced family vehicle. At the same time, it still has the ladder frame construction and four-wheel-drive capability that many buyers expect from the badge.

The Scorpio-N may not be the most luxurious SUV in its segment, but when it comes to buyers who value road presence, capability and a strong mechanical foundation, it is one of the most compelling options in its class.

Siddharth summarised the experience neatly following his drive:

“This is a massively improved car. It takes many leaps forward.”
