car&bike Expert Take

“The Scorpio-N feels like a proper evolution of the original big-bodied Scorpio. It maintains the rugged character and road presence, but adds refinement, improved ride quality and modern tech. The design may be a little safe, but the driving experience is a giant leap forward.”

Few SUVs in India have the kind of legacy that the Mahindra Scorpio has. First launched in 2002, the model quickly became one of the most recognisable SUVs in the country. The latest Mahindra Scorpio-N is the third generation of that lineage and comes after almost two decades of continuous popularity.
Mahindra internally referred to the project as Z101, and expectations were naturally high. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar reviewed the SUV in 2022 and his insights are shared throughout this review. According to Siddharth, the new SUV is more like a complete re-engineering than an update, with no major components carried over from the previous generation.

The Scorpio-N follows the brand's traditional formula of a body-on-frame chassis, powerful petrol and diesel engines and optional four-wheel drive. At the same time, Mahindra has added modern technology, better cabin quality and much better ride and handling. With rivals such as the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO and the Hyundai Alcazar now in the same space, the Scorpio-N is now in a space where buyers expect more than just rugged capability but modern comfort as well.
Siddharth summed up the experience during his drive:
“It's a completely different car. The refinement, steering feel and overall ride quality is all a huge leap forward.”

The Scorpio-N has two engine options, a turbo-petrol and a turbo-diesel, both with a manual and automatic transmission. Unlike many SUVs in this price range, the diesel engine also has rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive options.

The diesel engine is still the core of the Scorpio range, providing good torque at lower revs. The petrol engine focuses on refinement and responsiveness.

Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving

In normal traffic, the torque of the diesel engine makes the Scorpio-N feel effortless to drive. Once turbo spools up, the acceleration feels strong and predictable. Siddharth said that the previous Scorpio was crude and noisy, whereas the new model brings in a much more refined experience.
The automatic gearbox also provides convenience in heavy traffic. It isn't the quickest unit in the segment; however, it moves effortlessly and rarely feels confused while driving in a relaxed way.

Highway Driving

The Scorpio-N is most comfortable on highways. The diesel engine has no problem cruising at 100-120 kmph with ample torque at its disposal for overtakes. Even when it is pushed harder, the SUV is stable and composed.
Siddharth explained that the biggest improvement is the balance overall, in terms of ride and handling:

“The old Scorpio had a lot of bounce and nervous behaviour at speed. That’s gone. This one has a planted feeling and is much more mature.”

Manual vs Automatic

  • The six-speed manual gearbox allows for good control, particularly for drivers who like to work with the torque band of the engine.
  • The six-speed Aisin automatic is the better choice for daily driving. It works well with both engines and delivers smooth downshifts when more power is required.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N is true to the visual identity that made the original Scorpio so recognisable on Indian roads. Instead of radically redesigning the SUV, Mahindra decided to evolve its familiar boxy silhouette, but make it bigger, wider and more modern in execution. It is built on a stronger ladder frame platform, which immediately gives it a more planted stance. Yet, the brand has carefully retained the upright proportions that buyers associate with the Scorpio badge.
Siddharth noted in his review that the design direction is intentionally conservative:

“You take one look at it and you know immediately that it's a Scorpio. That was clearly not accidental.”

Key design characteristics include:

  • Tall bonnet and upright stance that reinforce the rugged character of the SUV
  • Squared wheel arches with heavily pronounced cladding on the body
  • Distinctive DRL signature inspired by a scorpion tail motif
  • Larger 18-inch alloy wheels on higher trims
  • Upright rear design with vertical LED tail lamps

The Scorpio-N may not push boundaries on a stylistic level, but its road presence and instantly recognisable shape are among its biggest strengths.

The Scorpio-N is very close to both the Safari and XUV 7XO in terms of overall size, but with a taller stance and ladder frame construction, it has a much more rugged look. While rivals are leaning towards a more urban SUV design, the Scorpio-N maintains a traditional off-road-ready character, which is exactly what many buyers expect from the nameplate.

The Scorpio-N's exterior design is all about muscle proportions and SUV presence over sleek styling.

Front Profile

The front fascia is dominated by the new grille of Mahindra with vertical chrome slats and the updated twin peaks logo. The bonnet is tall and sculpted, and adds to the imposing look. Higher variants receive LED projector headlamps with double barrel elements and lower trims have halogen units. The DRLs curve upwards around the fog lamps, creating a subtle scorpion tail design.

Siddharth observed:
“The face is tall, bold and muscular, just as you would expect from a Scorpio.”

Side Profile

From the side, the Scorpio-N appears substantial. The large glass area allows for better visibility, as well as making up part of the upright SUV silhouette.
Key highlights include:

  • Squared wheel arches
  • Strong shoulder line all through the body
  • Chrome garnish with the scorpion sting motif near the rear quarter glass
  • 17-inch or 18-inch wheels, depending on variant

Rear Profile

The rear design is simple and functional. The vertical LED tail lamps are still a Scorpio signature, but according to Siddharth, they are reminiscent of older Volvo designs. Another carryover element is the side-opening tailgate, which Mahindra decided to keep even as it departed from the old jump-seat set-up.
Siddharth commented:
“I personally would have preferred a conventional hatch door. It would have been more practical.”

Pros

    • It now gets a panoramic sunroof, 65W Type-C ports, ventilated front seats, and an electronic parking brake with auto hold.
    • Has the new 12.3-inch touchscreen with physical buttons, Adrenox Connect, wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Alexa integration.
    • Its new 10.24-inch driver display has full-screen navigation and three customisable views.
    • A 540-degree surround camera with a blind view monitor pairs with Level 2 ADAS on higher variants.
    • Adventure stats like roll, pitch, compass readings, altimeter data, and G-force metrics are displayed.
    • Wide engine options include the mStallion turbo-petrol and mHawk diesel, running RWD/4WD configurations between manual and auto gearboxes.
    • Top-end versions now get newly designed 18-inch diamond-cut alloys.

Cons

  • The top-end variants like the Z8L 4WD automatic now cost significantly higher.
  • Only the top-tier trims like the Z8T and Z8L have Level 2 ADAS, the panoramic skyroof, 540-degree camera, and 18-inch alloys.
  • Base variants stick with a basic driver display, hydraulic power steering on diesel manuals, and standard steel wheels.

Verdict

The new Mahindra Scorpio-N sharpens its position by incorporating high-demand tech like a panoramic sunroof, a larger touchscreen, digital instrumentation, and a 540-degree camera system. What already helps are the brand’s acclaimed mStallion petrol and mHawk diesel powertrains (with 4WD hardware).

We admit that the higher price tag for the variants which have ADAS and 4WD can make you rethink your purchase. But being a heavy-duty ladder-frame SUV enhances its core mechanical capabilities, and for buyers seeking a vehicle that balances off-road capability, strong performance, and updated cabin technology, the Scorpio-N now seems like a perfect fit.
