The Toyota Urban Cruiser focused on affordability while also providing the world-class Toyota Craftmanship. Toyota needs more reasonably priced vehicles to increase sales and support dealer viability, while its flagship models, the Innova and Fortuner, generate strong margins. The Urban Cruiser is Toyota’s answer to this problem.

How’s the design?

The Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV comes in 3 beautiful colours - spunky Blue, Rustic brown and groovy orange and seems like one classy Family car. With the exception of their respective brand emblems on the wheel hub covers, its rectangular side profiles are remarkably similar to those of the Maruti, making it impossible to distinguish between the two. Toyota has ingeniously altered the Urban Cruiser's frontal end to lend it a distinctive identity. Although the Vitara Brezza shares an identical headlight and hood, the whole front grille appears to have been taken from a Fortuner, and indeed the style of the fog lights enclosed in the bumper immediately identifies it as a Toyota.

How does it perform?

Although the performance output may be lower than that of the previous TOYOTA cruisers, it nevertheless performs admirably in this price range and is among the finest in its class. Additionally, the Toyota Urban Cruiser shares the same chassis as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and both vehicles are powered by the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 103 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque and is ideal for Indian roads and offers great pick up of 0-100 in 11.3 sec with a top speed of 170 KM/h.

How’s the mileage?

The Toyota Urban Cruiser comes in 6 different variants at different price points and comes with automatic and manual options that offer different mileage.

Variant Name Transmission/fuel Millage
MID MT Petrol / Manual 17 KM/L
HIGH MT Petrol / Manual 17 KM/L
Mid AT Petrol / Automatic 18.8 KM/L
Premium MT Petrol / Manual 17 KM/L
High AT Petrol/ Automatic 18.8 KM/L
Premium AT Petrol/ Automatic 18.8 KM/L

How’s the driving experience?

The Toyota Urban Cruiser has a top speed of more than 170 KMPH and can reach 100 KMPH in 11.52 seconds. The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder combustion engine from the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza powers the Toyota Urban Cruiser. The performance of this engine, which produces 103 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm, is sufficient for Indian road conditions.

How is its off-road capability?

The Cars manual transmission falls into the class of a 5-speed manual transmission, while the alternative transmission for the automatic models is a 4-speed torque conversion. The brand-new Toyota Urban Cruiser automobile is a wonderful ride for thrill seekers, with a mileage range between 17.03 and 18.76 km/l. The Toyota Urban Cruiser is the perfect vehicle for embarking on expeditions and participating in sports since it provides ample space for a comfortable journey on long lengths of road. Long trips are made possible with the Toyota Urban Cruiser thanks to its roomy interior and comfortable seats. Its 1.5-litre robust petrol motor produces strong performance both with on and off the capabilities.

What’s the interior like?

The interiors of the Toyota Urban Cruiser are crafted to provide the utmost comfortable driving experience and have received a 4-star safety rating at the Global NCAP. The ergonomics and styling of the Toyota Urban Cruiser's front seats are perfect, and you're sitting in a high, SUV-like posture with great leg space for the passengers. Although there are many storage compartments and a functional arrangement, the surface and quality of the plastics aren't as high-end as those of its competitors, and the general console layout seems a little obsolete. Along with a spacious 328-litre trunk, there are several storage spaces, including door pockets, seatback pockets, cupholders in the armrest, and even a baggage hook built into the front seat. The seat itself is comfortable. However, there are no AC outlets or a charging port for the backseat passengers.

Tech and infotainment

In the event of a collision, the brand-new Urban Cruiser frame is designed to disperse impact energy. while also making sure the cabin is robust. Apart from its great safety features in collision avoidance, the car also boasts a Speed-Sensitive Auto Door Lock, Anti-Pinch Driver-Side Power Window, and Side Impact Protection Beam making for a safe journey.

Safety Equipment

Global NCAP examined the Urban Cruiser, which included dual airbags for the front passenger and driver, ABS, front seatbelt indicator, and ISOFIX mounts as standard safety equipment. The Toyota Urban Cruiser received 4 stars for protecting adult occupants, earning 13.52 out of a maximum of 17 points. In addition, the Urban Cruiser has advanced safety mechanisms like traction control, vehicle stability control (VSC), and all-around disc brakes for a stable stance on the highway. The new Urban Cruiser frame is made to distribute the force of impact in the event of a crash while also ensuring that the cabin is secure.

Which variant to buy?

Toyota Urban Cruiser’s Premium AT variant is the best option if you are looking for automatic transmission with the most premium features while the HIGH AT variant is comparable to it at a more affordable rate. The Mid AT variant is the best option for a manual transmission as it provided the maximum millage of 18.8 KM/L and comes at the most affordable rate compared to the other variant and its offered features.

Which cars compete in this segment?

As the Toyota Urban cruiser is very close to the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza it serves to be its greatest competition in the SUV segment. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Sonet are close behind in the competition. The price of the Urban cruiser is the highest compared to the competitors but comes with the maximum features complemented by Japanese craftsmanship.

Verdict (Value for money)

Some people may also be drawn in by the Toyota name, and when you combine it with the roomy, comfy cabins, the user-friendly ergonomic design, and the comfortable riding experience, this compact SUV is hard to go wrong with. The Toyota Urban Cross doesn't have a price advantage over the Maruti because it costs about Rs 5,000–15,000 more than a roughly equivalent Vitara Brezza. However, prospective buyers will find value in its longer 3-year/1,000,000 km standard warranty and world-class after-sale services that are easily accessible in remote areas of India.

Pros

  • Peppy Petrol Engine
  • Good Cabin Space
  • 4-Star Safety Rating From Global Ncap

Cons

  • Styling And Features Are Dated
  • No Diesel Engine On Offer
  • Needs A More Engaging Auto Gearbox

Verdict

Yes, the Toyota Urban Cruiser is priced at quite a premium, something that will not be appreciated by the price conscious buyer in this segment. But the Toyota badge ensures that you will get a hassle-free ownership experience with the car. And that matters a lot to many of us, doesn't it? Add to that a 3-year 1 lakh kms standard warranty and the balance might just tilt in the favour of the Urban Cruiser.
