The Honda WR-V, with its array of features and drivability, aligns more closely with a premium hatchback rather than a conventional vehicle in its segment. It amalgamates attributes from various categories, bestowing it with a distinct character. However, despite these merits, there was an opportunity for Honda to further distinguish the WR-V in a crowded market. The potential for additional enhancements or unique offerings might have elevated its appeal and set it apart more definitively from its competitors. This suggests a missed chance to not just blend but lead in its class with more distinctive features or innovations.
The Honda WR-V was first introduced in 2017 and received a minor facelift in 2020 before it was discontinued in early 2023. It shares its roots with the Jazz hatchback but offers more space, style, and features. Equipped with BS6-compliant petrol and diesel engines, an updated front end, and a simplified model range, the WR-V 2020 competed with premium hatchbacks, subcompact sedans, and subcompact SUVs in the Indian market.
The WR-V showcases a more assertive and sleeker design compared to its predecessor. The front grille had been enlarged, now featuring horizontal slats instead of the previous honeycomb pattern. LED projectors with LED DRLs and intricate detailing replace the previous headlamps. LED-powered fog lamps with robust black surrounds further enhance the look. While the side profile remind largely unchanged, the addition of new 16-inch alloy wheels adds a touch of freshness. The rear end boasted reworked LED tail lamps with a smoked finish and blacked-out frames. The WR-V was available in six colours: Radiant Red, Lunar Silver, Modern Steel, Golden Brown, Platinum White, and Premium Amber.
The interior of the WR-V came with an all-black dashboard, silver accents, and high-quality plastics. The sole modification to the 2020 model was the seat upholstery, featuring a sporty mesh design. The WR-V provided a spacious and functional cabin, offering ample legroom, headroom, and cargo space. The standout feature is the electric sunroof, adding to the car's appeal. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, called Digipad 2.0, supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and built-in navigation, though its touch response and clarity leave room for improvement. Standard features included automatic climate control, a driver seat height adjuster, telescopic steering tilt and adjustment, steering-mounted controls, cruise control, and a front armrest with substantial storage.
The WR-V 2020 came with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, a rear parking camera, impact-mitigating front headrests, and pedestrian injury mitigation technology across all variants. However, it falls short of some features offered by competitors, such as side and curtain airbags, hill start assist, traction control, electronic stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Under the hood, the WR-V 2020 boasted two BS6-compliant engines: a 1.2-litre petrol engine generating 89 bhp and 110 Nm of torque and a 1.5-litre diesel engine with a more robust 99 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. Both engines were paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, with the petrol engine offering the option of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for added convenience. The petrol engine operated smoothly but lacked the excitement and punch found in some competitors. The diesel engine, on the other hand, was more potent but exhibited some turbo lag at lower revs. The claimed fuel efficiency was 16.5 kmpl for the petrol engine and 23.7 kmpl for the diesel engine.
The WR-V 2020 delivered a comfortable and composed ride quality, thanks to its well-tuned suspension that adeptly absorbs road imperfections. Its generous ground clearance of 188 mm enabled it to navigate rough roads without scraping the underbody. The steering offers ease of manoeuvring in city traffic, though it provides limited feedback at high speeds. While body roll is minimal for a crossover, it's not as well-controlled as conventional hatchbacks or sedans.
Pricing for the 2020 WR-V ranged between Rs. 9.11 lakh and Rs. 12.31 lakh (ex-showroom). This positioned it as a pricier option compared to most competitors in the premium hatchback and subcompact sedan segments, including models such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, Honda Amaze, and Hyundai Aura. It also fell within the price range of some subcompact SUVs, such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and Hyundai Venue.
The WR-V 2020 faced stiff competition across various segments in the Indian market. It competed with premium hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz, and Toyota Glanza, which offer more features, superior performance, and lower prices than the WR-V 2020. It also competed with subcompact sedans like the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, and Ford Aspire, which provide more trunk space, comfort, and convenience. Lastly, it competes with subcompact SUVs like the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, and Tata Nexon, offering increased ground clearance, road presence, and safety features compared to the WR-V 2020.

What's New?
The 2020 Honda WR-V has been launched in India and the hatchback-SUV crossover gets plenty of changes on the updated version. This is the first comprehensive upgrade to the WR-V since its launch in 2017. The model receives subtly refreshed styling, new features and updated BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engines. The automaker now offers the WR-V in two variants - SV and VX - while the erstwhile entry-level S trim has been discontinued. This means that both versions of the subcompact crossover are feature-laden as the model locks horns against the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and the likes.
Visually, the 2020 Honda WR-V comes with a larger grille with horizontal slats and Honda's signature chrome bar with the big H logo the centre. The headlamp cluster has been upgraded to new LED projector lens units with LED daytime running lights. The front bumper has been tweaked and there are new LED fog lamps. At the rear, the model looks identical to the current one but there are the new LED tail lamps with the smoked treatment, and C-shaped LED signature lights. The WR-V facelift also gets new 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels sporting a different design and a shark fin antenna.
Inside, the 2020 Honda WR-V facelift gets revised upholstery, cruise control function with steering mounted button, one-touch start-stop button, keyless entry and height-adjustable driver's seat. The car also comes with electric sunroof, auto climate control, new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There’s the new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system called the Digipad 2.0 that offers in-built navigation with live traffic support, voice command and Bluetooth telephony. Honda has also added an updated front armrest with a storage area that can accommodate a full-size tablet. The safety suite is expansive as well with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, multi-view rear camera, reverse parking sensors and more, all of which are now standard across the range.
Power on the new Honda WR-V facelift continues to come from the same engines that meet the new emission standards. This includes the 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol motor produces out 89 bhp and 110 Nm of peak torque, while paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The diesel version uses the 1.5-litre four-cylinder i-DTEC engine tuned for 99 bhp and 200 Nm of peak torque, while paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. There are no automatic options on offer.
Honda has applied its advanced exhaust gas after-treatment system with NSC (NOx Storage Catalyst) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) to meet the target of particulate matter (PM) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emission in case of diesel engines. Honda's original Silver Thin Coated DPF (STC-DPF) enables reduction of PM combustion time by 40 per cent compared to the conventional DPF. All of these changes help the engines meet the new BS6 norms on the WR-V.
The Honda WR-V is available in six colour options - Premium Amber Metallic, Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, Golden Brown Metallic, Radiant Red Metallic and Platinum White Pearl. The model is offered with a 3 year/Unlimited Kilometres warranty, as standard. The automaker also offers an extended warranty of 2 years with Unlimited/Limited kilometres for a better ownership experience. The WR-V comes with a service interval of 1 year/10,000 km whichever is earlier and a 3-year Annual Maintenance Package can be purchased separately when buying the vehicle, with an average cost of Rs. 4,000 for Petrol and Rs. 6,000 for Diesel annually.
The 2020 Honda WR-V is priced from Rs. 8.50 lakh for the SV trim, going up to Rs. 9.70 for the VX petrol version. The WR-V diesel range starts at Rs. 9.80 lakh, going up to Rs. 11 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi) for the range-topping VX diesel. Bookings for the WR-V are open on Honda’s website and at its dealerships across India.
