car&bike Expert Take

“The Hyundai Creta EV is strong on comfort, practicality, and everyday usability, with the added benefit of smooth electric performance. It suits buyers looking for a familiar, family-friendly SUV with lower running costs. However, it is not ideal for those seeking a sporty driving experience or a bold, radically different design.”

Introduced as the all-electric version of Hyundai’s popular Creta, the Creta EV brings electric technology into a familiar and widely accepted package. Hyundai has retained the core design and appeal of the SUV, while adding subtle EV-specific elements like a closed grille and aerodynamic alloy wheels. It is offered with two battery packs: 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh. It delivers a claimed range of up to 510 km along with improved performance.

We have often seen Hyundai position the Creta as a practical urban SUV, and the electric version follows the same approach. It focuses on comfort, ease of driving, and everyday usability, while adding features like a floating centre console and V2L for added convenience. In our evaluation, the real-world range of over 370 km for the larger battery pack seems achievable, which makes it suitable for both city use and occasional highway drives.

This Hyundai Creta EV expert review features inputs from auto journalist Seshan Vijayraghvan, who evaluated its design, performance, and practicality in his comprehensive written review. His observations have been included here to give a clearer understanding of what the Creta EV offers as a complete package.

The Hyundai Creta EV is offered with two battery pack options, and we found that both are tuned to deliver a balance between performance and everyday usability. The smaller 42 kWh unit focuses on efficiency, while the larger 51.4 kWh battery improves range and outright performance.

Powertrain Specifications Tested

The following table lists the key specifications of the Hyundai Creta EV:

133 – 169 bhp

Driving Experience: Real World

City Driving

In city conditions, we found the Creta EV easy to adapt to. The throttle is smooth, with enough instant torque for traffic. Regenerative braking takes some getting used to, but it reduces frequent braking in stop-and-go driving.

Highway Driving

On the highway, we found the Creta EV quick and stable. Acceleration is strong, achieving 0–100 kmph in under 8 seconds, and overtakes don’t need much effort. The added battery weight also helps with stability at higher speeds.

As Seshan Vijayraghvan notes,

“With 169 bhp and instant torque, this is the quickest Creta yet.”

The Hyundai Creta EV keeps the familiar Creta shape, but adds a few EV-specific touches to set it apart. It doesn’t try to look drastically different, and that actually works in its favour for buyers who already like the Creta’s design.

Here’s a quick look at the key design elements:

  • A closed-off grille with pixel-like detailing gives it a cleaner EV identity
  • The charging port is neatly integrated into the front logo
  • Active air flaps in the bumper help with cooling and efficiency
  • LED headlights and connected DRLs are carried over from the standard Creta
  • New aero-style 17-inch alloy wheels are offered across all variants
  • From the side, the overall silhouette remains unchanged, though the battery pack is slightly visible underneath

We found that the design doesn’t immediately stand out as an EV, and that’s intentional. It feels familiar and easy to accept. Overall, it’s a clean update rather than a complete redesign.

The Creta EV sits in the middle here. It’s not the biggest, but its proportions work well for everyday use. At 2,610 mm, its wheelbase is longer than the Curvv EV, but it’s still smaller than the BE 6 overall. It’s also the tallest here, which helps with seating comfort and ease of entry.

Pros

  • Familiar and widely accepted Creta design with subtle EV updates
  • More features than the ICE version, including V2L and seat memory
  • Smooth and quick performance with strong acceleration
  • Usable real-world range for both city and highway driving

Cons

  • Infotainment still misses wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Not a born-EV platform creates a slightly raised floor.
  • Boot space is less than that of the competition.
  • Exposed battery pack affects the overall visual integration

Verdict

The Hyundai Creta EV builds on what already works well with the standard Creta and adds the benefits of an electric powertrain. It offers a practical cabin, more features, and a smoother driving experience. During our evaluation, we found the performance to be quick, the ride quality comfortable, and the overall usability well-suited for daily use.

There are a few areas that could have been better. The lack of native wireless smartphone connectivity feels dated, and the boot space limits its ability to carry larger luggage. The final value also depends heavily on how it is priced across variants.

Seshan Vijayraghvan concludes,

“On paper, the Creta EV looks like a strong all-round package. It offers a good mix of features, performance, and expected range in its segment.”
