car&bike Expert Take
“The Maruti Suzuki Celerio makes a strong case for itself as an easy-to-live-with, everyday runabout. It has exceptional fuel efficiency and excellent ride quality over outright visual flair. Its vast boot and sorted chassis are highly practical for first-time buyers and budget commuters alike.”

The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio has finally hit showroom floors in 2026, and undoubtedly, it has some massive shoes to fill over the coming years, considering the previous generation sold well over 5.9 lakh units. The newest iteration now sits on the fifth-gen Heartect platform and is visibly longer and wider than the outgoing model. But we also noticed the roofline is slightly shorter now.
Even though this hatchback charms you with its highly refined nature, class-leading boot space, and excellent ride quality, it does not quite go the extra mile. While it justifies a solid evolution of the nameplate, adding a few more premium features and providing a clearer focus on safety would have made it an undisputed champion in its class.

The initial launch of this car was checked out by Ameya Naik, from whom we have taken a few insights to help you understand how this car still holds up in India’s automotive market, and how it squares off against some capable competitors.
Under the Celerio’s hood is the next-gen K-Series 1.0-litre engine, producing a modest 66 bhp and 89 Nm of torque. It is packed with modern tech like dual VVT, dual injectors, and a cooled EGR system to meticulously maximise fuel ignition control.
Ameya notes,
“The new-gen Celerio charms you with its refinement, class-leading boot space, and excellent ride quality.”
Engine Specifications
Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 1.0-Litre K-Series Petrol | 66 bhp | 89 Nm | Five-speed manual / AMT | Front-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In cramped city conditions, the turning radius is incredibly tight, making the car agile enough to cut through narrow streets.
The manual gearbox is undeniably the driver’s choice here, as the clutch pedal is light, and the gearbox itself offers short gear-ratio changes that make constant swapping easier. The AMT (AGS) experience, on the other hand, is not exactly peppy, to be honest. The transmission takes a moment to react to the throttle, especially when you need a sudden burst of power during quick overtakes.
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, the hatchback holds its ground reasonably well. Once the engine spins past the 2,200 rpm mark, there is a solid, linear push that makes keeping up with fast-moving traffic easier.
The manual allows you to keep the small engine on the boil, while we already mentioned how the AMT requires a bit more planning before you pull out to pass long trucks, a scenario similar to city driving. The engine eventually runs out of breath at the top end, but otherwise, it remains a highly tractable and fuss-free companion at regular cruising speeds.
The new Celerio has cleanly moved away from the old squarish aesthetic toward a much more youthful 3D design language. It is noticeably longer and wider than the outgoing car, although it sits slightly shorter.
The proportions tidy up the rather utilitarian appearance of the older generation. Its styling is rounded, bubbly, and incredibly approachable.
Dimensions Comparison
Dimension | Maruti Suzuki Celerio | Tata Tiago | Hyundai Santro |
Length | 3,695 mm | 3,765 mm | 3,610 mm |
Width | 1,655 mm | 1,677 mm | 1,645 mm |
Height | 1,555 mm | 1,535 mm | 1,560 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,435 mm | 2,400 mm | 2,400 mm |
Compared to the Tata Tiago and the Hyundai Santro, Maruti’s offering comes with a larger wheelbase of 2,435 mm, which translates to a bit more space inside the cabin.
The overall exterior treatment for this vehicle drops any aggressive pretence in favour of a soft, family-friendly face.
Front Profile
- The front has a wide, smiling face with nice-looking headlamps and a single, tasteful chrome line running across the grille.
- Surprisingly, there are absolutely no LED DRLs on offer. It is a miss in today’s highly competitive market, but certainly not a deal-breaker.
Side Profile
- Looking at it from this angle, you can easily notice the increased length and the signature tall boy stance.
- The top-end variant rides on stylish 15-inch alloy wheels, which fill the arches quite well.
- Lower-spec models, however, stick to basic 14-inch steel wheels.
Rear Profile
- Smart droplet-style taillights round out the back end of the hatchback.
- They provide a clean, proportionate, and entirely fuss-free finish to the tailgate.

Once inside the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, you will notice how much of the focus on refining its cabin has leaned toward refreshing and contemporary elements.
Cabin Layout and Quality
You will quickly spot some shared family parts across the dashboard. The steering wheel and the analogue instrument cluster dials are lifted straight from the Wagon R. Meanwhile, the centre console placement of the front power window switches is highly reminiscent of the quirky S-Presso.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
The front seats provide a clear view of the road, which makes the car exceptionally easy to move around in stop-start traffic. The seats have enough cushioning for short daily commutes, but the fixed headrests feel like evident cost-cutting. They strip away a layer of premium appeal that buyers might expect at this price tag.

Second Row
Thanks to a 10 mm increase in the wheelbase (now measuring 2,435 mm), there is decent room in the back. You get vastly improved shoulder room and headroom for taller occupants. Unfortunately, rear cabin amenities are incredibly sparse. Passengers get a basic bottle holder and a small phone slot, with no charging points to speak of.
Ameya observes,
“We would have loved adjustable headrests. Even the lower-priced Wagon R offers them!”
Features That Improve Daily Use
- Seven-inch SmartPlay infotainment system
- Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Keyless entry with push-button start
- Manual air conditioning
- Steering-mounted audio controls
The Celerio is priced quite competitively, sitting right where the Tata Tiago and the Hyundai Santro belong. It quickly turns into a strict numbers game for the cars here, as the fully loaded top-end Celerio and Tiago trims float around the same aggressive price bracket.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
LXi | 1.0-Litre Petrol, Five-speed MT | Rs. 4.69 Lakh |
VXi | 1.0-Litre Petrol+CNG, MT / AMT | Rs. 5.15 – 5.60 Lakh |
ZXi | 1.0-Litre Petrol, MT / AMT | Rs. 5.70 – 6.15 Lakh |
ZXi Plus | 1.0-Litre Petrol, MT / AMT | Rs. 6.27 – 6.72 Lakh |
Fuel efficiency is where the Celerio wins. The heavily tweaked K-Series motor makes this vehicle the most fuel-efficient petrol car your money can buy. The AGS version gives an ARAI figure of 26.68 kmpl, while the manual variant is not behind either, responsively delivering over 24 kmpl during regular use. Even in actual city traffic, you will rarely find yourself frequenting petrol pumps.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
Engine & Transmission | 1.0-Litre Petrol Manual | 1.0-Litre Petrol AMT |
ARAI-Claimed Mileage | 25.24 kmpl | 26.68 kmpl |
City Mileage (Real-World) | 18–20 kmpl | 19–21 kmpl |
Highway Mileage (Real-World) | 22–24 kmpl | 23–25 kmpl |
Note: When running on CNG, the car’s VXi variant gives 26–28 km/kg city and 30–32 km/kg mileage numbers. Its ARAI mileage is 34.43 km/kg.
The Celerio's safety suite follows most Indian safety requirements, but we need to keep one thing clear here: in this department, it's absolutely not a Tata or Mahindra equivalent.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The standard suite includes six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, and crucial seatbelt pretensioners. However, take note that the car got a three-star safety rating for adults and a two-star rating for children from the Global NCAP. The structural rigidity feels acceptable for city speeds. Still, we feel Maruti could have pushed the safety envelope a lot further here, when rivals are offering at least four-star rated vehicles.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
Active electronic safety aids are mostly absent, which we wouldn't expect an entry-level hatchback to have, in the current market anyway. However, the AMT variant crucially gets a very handy Hill Start Assist feature. This system prevents the car from dangerously rolling backwards on steep inclines or flyovers, eliminating a major headache for novice drivers in heavy traffic.
Safety Verdict
The safety package confidently ticks most boxes for a basic urban experience. Still, if you want to spend a lot of time out on the open highway, you will definitely miss a more comprehensive, reassuring safety net.

Modern hatchbacks must deliver decent creature comforts to win over buyers. The Celerio keeps things contemporary, even if the cabin borrows several touchpoints directly from the Wagon R.
Infotainment and Interface
The centrepiece of the dashboard is the seven-inch SmartPlay infotainment system.
It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you will have to use it without a wireless option.
The interface is easy to use and rarely suffers from any frustrating lag.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
The central console has the power window switches, a layout plucked right out of the S-Presso.
Rear passengers get basic niceties like a bottle holder and a dedicated phone slot.
Crucially, the cabin misses out on rear charging points.

When it comes to swallowing luggage, this hatchback pulls ahead of the pack. Boot capacity has grown by 40 per cent over the outgoing generation.
You now get a class-leading 313 litres of cargo volume, which easily outclasses the Swift’s 268 litres and the Tata Tiago’s 242 litres. The load lip is also manageable, meaning you can drop your bags in without straining your back. The car easily swallows a weekend's worth of soft bags or a couple of medium-sized suitcases.
You rarely expect a budget runabout to iron out bad roads with grace. Yet, the ride quality is where the Celerio truly shines. The suspension feels supple and has been tuned beautifully for Indian roads.
City Driving
Navigating through city traffic is where this car feels most at home. The turning radius is incredibly tight, making the hatchback exceptionally nifty for cramped city streets. We found the steering to be pleasantly weighty, unlike the overly light setups usually found in this bracket. Pothole-ridden stretches are dealt with easily, softening the harshness of broken tarmac before it reaches the cabin.
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, the chassis remains surprisingly composed. The Celerio stays planted at triple-digit speeds; while you will notice some lateral movement, it maintains its overall composure. However, push it hard into a corner, and the front tyres will eventually succumb to understeer.
Maruti Suzuki offers a fairly simple lineup. The sweet spot largely depends on how much you are willing to spend on cabin niceties.
Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Features |
LXi | 1.0-Litre Petrol, Five-speed MT | Standard safety kit, manual air-conditioning |
VXi | 1.0-Litre Petrol+CNG, Five-speed MT / AMT | Body-coloured mirrors, power windows |
ZXi | 1.0-Litre Petrol, Five-speed MT / AMT | Steering-mounted controls, audio system |
ZXi+ | 1.0-Litre Petrol, Five-speed MT / AMT | Seven-inch SmartPlay screen, 15-inch alloy wheels |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- Adjustable rear headrests
- LED daytime running lights
- Rear passenger charging ports
Picking the right trim comes down to your daily running costs and budget. The base model feels a touch too bare-bones, so we advise stepping up.
Best for the Budget Buyer: VXi
If you want to keep the price tag low but cannot live without power windows, the VXi ticks the basic boxes. It works perfectly as a frugal daily driver without breaking the bank.
Best for City Commuting: ZXi AMT
For those facing heavy traffic daily, the ZXi AMT is the one to pick. You get the convenience of a two-pedal setup along with essential creature comforts like a reliable audio system.
Best for Top-Tier Features: ZXi+
Those who want the complete kit list should look at the top-spec ZXi+. It has 15-inch alloy wheels and the much-needed seven-inch touchscreen.
The compact hatchback space is intensely fought over. The Celerio sits right in the mix against well-established rivals, facing off primarily against the Tata Tiago and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. The prices for all three vehicles are more or less similar, but the Tiago and the Nios have relatively higher power and torque in their engines. The Nios can also go over budget if you check out its top variants.
| Model | Engine | Power / Torque | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| Maruti Suzuki Celerio | 1.0-Litre Petrol+CNG | 66 bhp / 89 Nm | Rs. 4.69 – Rs. 6.72 lakh |
| Tata Tiago | 1.2-Litre Petrol | 85 bhp / 113 Nm | Rs. 4.57 – Rs. 8.78 lakh |
| Hyundai Grand i10 Nios | 1.2-Litre Petrol | 82 bhp / 113.8 Nm | Rs. 5.55 – Rs. 9.15 lakh |
Which Compact Hatchback Should You Choose?
- Choose the Maruti Suzuki Celerio if running costs and a cavernous boot are your top priorities.
- Choose the Tata Tiago if you want a heavier build quality and a punchy 1.2-litre engine for slightly better performance.
- Choose the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios if you prefer plush interiors and slick-shifting gearboxes more than anything else.
Pros
- Phenomenal 25 kmpl+ fuel efficiency
- Class-leading 313-litre boot space
- Light clutch with short, crisp manual throws
- Nicely weighted steering feel
Cons
- AMT takes a moment to react during overtakes
- Lacks adjustable headrests
- Missing LED daytime running lights
- Cabin borrows parts from cheaper models
Verdict
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is an honest, frugal, and incredibly practical runabout, ditching the boxy aesthetic often found in this segment for a more youthful design. The next-gen K-Series engine lacks outright top-end grunt. Still, it easily compensates by being the most fuel-efficient petrol car in the country, and is a remarkably sorted package for city commuting.
Still, minor niggles remain. There are no adjustable headrests, and it’s hard to accept this when the cheaper Wagon R offers them, and most cars at this price range attempt to give LED DRLs nowadays. But ultimately, if you want a fuss-free daily driver with minimal running costs without caring much for these left-out features, the Celerio gets the job done without any unnecessary drama.
Ameya concludes about the car,
“The new-gen Celerio charms you with its refinement, class-leading boot space, and excellent ride quality.”
Maruti Suzuki Celerio Mileage
Maruti Suzuki Celerio mileage is 24 to 26 KM/L as per ARAI The Manual Petrol engine has a mileage of 25.2 KM/L. The AMT Petrol engine has a mileage of 26.7 KM/L. The Manual Petrol+CNG engine has a mileage of 25.2 KM/L. ...

It’s perfect for city driving, with smooth handling and a reliable engine performance. The automatic version makes it incredibly convenient for daily commutes.
