car&bike Expert Take
“The Audi A4 is a handsome choice for buyers taking a glance at the luxury sedan market. While top performance is something this car usually comes with, it also balances out most of the other things beautifully with its well-tuned chassis and strong brand identity.”
For years, Audi has been assembling cars within India, and the A4's 2025 facelift cements this legacy by rolling straight out of the German brand's Aurangabad plant. While it may not be as sporty to drive as a Mercedes-Benz C-Class or a BMW 3 Series, it has more of a balanced profile instead, offering a spacious luxury experience for four adults.
The A4 has multiple trims available besides the Signature Edition, such as the Premium Plus and the Technology variants. However, it is in the former where we see a lot of changes, such as a rear boot lip spoiler, painted alloy wheels, and some natural grey wood oak inlays. But no matter the variant, this sedan from Audi sticks to one clear goal: to be a market champion for both daily commuting and weekend highway trips by giving off a comfortable riding experience.
Kingshuk Dutta had covered one of the car's facelifts, while Jaiveer Mehra had also mentioned the launch of the A4's Signature Edition. Their insights are in this review, too, to help you decide whether this is a vehicle worth checking out.
The A4 relies on a familiar 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 201 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Audi continues with its petrol-only strategy, meaning there is no diesel option to choose from. Power goes to the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox, and you get five driving modes via the Audi Drive Select system: Efficiency, Comfort, Dynamic, Auto, and Individual.
The mid-range torque is noticeable, making overtakes effortless. Audi claims a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 7.3 seconds, which feels accurate when you push the pedal hard. It is refined, lively, and incredibly smooth.
According to Kingshuk,
“The engine is actually fun and engaging; more importantly, because the severn-speed gearbox is a joy.”
Engine Specifications
Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 201 bhp | 320 Nm | Seven-speed automatic | Front-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
The A4 delivers a planted and predictable driving feel on roads.
City Driving
The A4’s engine is agile, while the seven-speed automatic shifts precisely, ensuring effortless progress in stop-and-go traffic. The response from this setup is always instantaneous, so your city commutes are always comfortable and consistent.
Highway Driving
The steering weighs up nicely as the speedometer climbs on open stretches. You can yield maximum performance out of the given torque, but at the same time, if you want a comfortable cruising vibe, the engine will not fail to deliver. Speaking about overtakes, the dual-clutch transmission helps a lot.
The Audi A4 facelift boasts a handsome and cohesive exterior; it has a wide, signature single-frame grille and a completely revised front bumper. The new LED daytime running lights have a distinct pattern that easily separates this model from its predecessor.
Kingshuk observes,
“The front end is completely revised, with a newly designed bumper that looks sexier.”

The profile carries sharp creases and edges that lead into a sporty rear section. The dual tailpipes and redesigned LED taillights add character to the back. The only mild letdown is the somewhat pale design of the standard 17-inch alloy wheels, which do not quite match the car's otherwise sharp aesthetic.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Audi A4 | Mercedes-Benz C-Class | BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine |
| Length | 4,762 mm | 4,751 mm | 4,823 mm |
| Width | 1,847 mm | 1,820 mm | 1,827 mm |
| Height | 1,433 mm | 1,437 mm | 1,441 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,820 mm | 2,865 mm | 2,961 mm |
It’s a slightly wider car at 1,847 mm than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine, but shorter than them, standing tall at 1,433 mm.
The A4 prefers to have polished lines instead of over-the-top styling cues. To us, it looks classically handsome from every angle.
Front Profile
- The wider single-frame grille grabs attention immediately.
- The LED headlights get a fresh, distinct DRL signature.
- The revised bumper design makes the car look more aggressive from this angle.
Side Profile
- Sharp creases along the shoulder line highlight the sedan's length.
- The car has standard 17-inch alloy wheels, but they look slightly subdued.
- The Signature Edition includes floating Audi centre caps that stay upright in motion.
Rear Profile
- A neat chrome strip connects the redesigned LED taillights.
- There are dual tailpipes to emphasise the car's sporty stance.
- A rear boot lip spoiler has also been added to the Signature Edition.
The inside of the A4 is a calm, well-built environment; Audi has not changed the dashboard layout too much, but the small, nifty updates make a big difference in daily usability.
Cabin Layout and Quality
Fit and finish are premium, exactly what you expect from a luxury German sedan. The single file of AC vents remains, but the centrepiece is the tactile and responsive 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen. Physical AC controls sit right below the vents and feel great to operate. The Signature Edition improves things further with natural grey wood oak inlays.

Seating Comfort
The seats offer great support for long drives.
Front Row
The front seats are supportive and accommodating. The top-spec Technology trim includes powered front seats with memory function for the driver, ensuring you can always find your ideal driving posture.
Second Row
The rear seat offers a good amount of headroom and knee room. The upholstery feels rich, making it a comfortable space for two adults to spend time on longer journeys.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Audi Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster
- Three-zone automatic climate control
- Optional 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system on the higher trims
- 360-degree cameras on the Signature Edition
- Wireless phone charging on the Technology trim
Audi positions the A4 competitively in the mid-size luxury sedan segment. It undercuts some rivals while offering a strong list of standard equipment.
Jaiveer mentions,
“Based on the A4 Technology trim, the Signature Edition is priced identically to the top variant of the A4 range while getting some cosmetic enhancements and a few new features.”
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
Premium | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | Rs. 46.41 Lakh |
Premium Plus | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | Rs. 51.33 Lakh |
Signature Edition | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | Rs. 54.02 Lakh |
Technology | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | Rs. 55.27 Lakh |
Fuel efficiency is respectable given the engine's power output. While the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol is tuned for smooth acceleration, it manages to keep running costs in check if driven sensibly.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
Engine & Transmission | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | City Mileage (Real-World) | Highway Mileage (Real-World) |
2.0-Litre Petrol Automatic | 17.4 kmpl | 12–13 kmpl | 16–17 kmpl |
In regular city traffic, you can expect the A4 to return around 12 to 13 kmpl. The seven-speed gearbox upshifts early under light throttle to save fuel. On the open highway, steady cruising between 80 and 100 kmph will see the figures rise to a healthy 16 to 17 kmpl.
The A4 comes equipped with a solid safety net. It protects occupants well, although it misses out on some of the newer active safety tech found in rivals.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
Audi provides eight airbags as standard across the A4 range, along with ABS. The body shell is tough, and the doors close with a reassuring thud, providing a strong sense of security. The sedan feels planted and stable at high speeds, which inherently makes highway driving feel much safer.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
The A4 covers the basics perfectly. It features electronic stability control and traction systems to keep the car facing the right way. The Technology trim features auto park assist to help squeeze into tight spaces. The Signature Edition goes a step further by adding a 360-degree camera, improving visibility during tricky parking manoeuvres. However, it does not have Level 2 ADAS features like adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist.
Safety Verdict
While it misses out on modern semi-autonomous driving aids, the A4 remains a very safe car. Its core structural integrity, predictable handling, and standard eight airbags ensure that you and your family are well protected. It earned a five-star rating from Euro NCAP.
The Audi A4 does not rely on massive screens or confusing menus to grab your attention. Instead, it focuses heavily on everyday usability, tactile feedback, and clear displays that simply work.
Infotainment and Interface
- The centrepiece of the dashboard is the 10.1-inch MMI screen available on the higher trims.
- It sits high up for easy viewing and features standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- The display is sharp and stays perfectly readable even under the harsh midday sun.
- The base Premium Plus model receives a slightly smaller 8.8-inch touchscreen.
- Physical buttons and rotary controls for the climate settings sit right below the air vents.
Kingshuk specifies,
“The party piece in this car is the 10.1-inch MMI screen.”
Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- A sunroof and ambient interior lighting are offered as standard equipment across the range.
- Stepping up to the Technology trim adds the excellent Audi Virtual Cockpit and a wireless charging pad.
- The top-tier versions also get a premium 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.
- Front seats are powered, and the driver gets a memory function to save their preferred driving position.
- Fit and finish across the cabin are top-notch. Plastics feel soft, and the grey wood oak inlays on special editions look brilliant.
The boot layout is flat and incredibly practical for airport runs or weekend getaways. It offers a generous 460 litres of luggage capacity.
The loading lip is relatively low, so you do not have to strain your back when lifting heavy suitcases. The space is deep and wide enough to swallow two large bags and a few soft duffels easily. If you need more room for longer items, the rear seats fold down to free up additional cargo volume.
The chassis delivers a fine balance for long-distance comfort and predictable handling; it feels mature, planted, and secure on Indian roads.
City Driving
The car’s steering is exceptionally communicative from the initial turn-in, and it is light at low speeds, making tight parking spots a breeze to navigate. The suspension soaks up sharp bumps and broken patches of tarmac without sending loud thuds into the cabin.
Kingshuk, however, observes,
“The A4 may not feel as engaging as the 3 Series when you chuck it into a corner, but even then, it does the job well.”
Highway Driving
Out on the open road, the A4 settles into a quiet, comfortable cruise. The ride feels slightly stiff at higher speeds, but this firmness keeps the body completely stable and tied down. Meanwhile, wind noise is kept strictly outside, making it a brilliant companion for long road trips.
Audi keeps the variant line-up fairly simple to understand. You can pick from two main trims, along with the limited-run special edition.
Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Features | Ex-Showroom Prices |
| Premium / Premium Plus | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | 8.8-inch screen, sunroof, ambient lighting, eight airbags | Rs. 46.41 – 51.33 Lakh |
| Technology | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | 10.1-inch screen, Virtual Cockpit, wireless charging, auto park assist | Rs. 55.27 Lakh |
| Signature Edition | 2.0-Litre Petrol, Seven-speed Automatic | Boot lip spoiler, 360-degree camera, puddle lamps | Rs. 54.02 Lakh |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- No diesel engine option available
- Some Level 2 ADAS features are unavailable
- No digital instrument cluster in the base trim
Your ideal Audi A4 depends on how much you want modern technology and parking aids in your daily commute. If you’re okay with base-level niceties, the Premium Plus variant is more than enough for you. However, avoid the base Premium variant altogether if you’re aiming to spend this amount of money anyway.
Best for Value: Premium Plus
If you simply want the solid build quality and the punchy 2.0-litre petrol engine, this trim makes a lot of sense. You still get a sunroof, ambient lighting, and eight airbags.
Best for Tech Lovers: Technology
This variant is the sweet spot in the range. The upgrade brings the larger 10.1-inch screen, the brilliant digital dials, and wireless charging. It feels far more complete inside.
Best for Exclusivity: Signature Edition
If you want unique paint options and added safety, this limited run is the one. It's pricier than the other two, significantly, around eight lakh costlier than the base edition.
The luxury sedan segment is often hotly contested in the Indian market, and the Audi A4 mostly goes head-to-head with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3 Series in this space. Mercedes-Benz’s offering is costlier, and even then, the BMW 3 Series is way pricier than the former. They’ve got different engines available as well, but the Audi A4 stands strong against their attractive values by starting from a much, much lower price point.
| Model | Engine Options | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Prices |
| Audi A4 | 2.0-litre Petrol | Comfortable ride, sensible ergonomics, strong value | Rs. 46 – Rs. 57.11 Lakh |
| Mercedes-Benz C-Class | 1.5-litre Petrol / 2.0-litre Diesel | Stunning interior, brand cachet, soft ride | Rs. 58.65 – Rs. 65.60 Lakh |
| BMW 3 Series | 2.0-litre Petrol / 2.0-litre Diesel | Sharp handling, sporty driving feel, great gearboxes | Rs. 1.47 Crore |
Which Mid-Size Luxury Sedan Should You Choose?
- Choose the Audi A4 if you want a fuss-free, comfortable daily driver with sorted ergonomics and great value.
- Choose the Mercedes-Benz C-Class if a flashy, screen-heavy interior and brand image are your top priorities.
- Choose the BMW 3 Series if you genuinely love driving and want the sharpest handling in the class.
Pros
- Punchy and refined 2.0-litre petrol engine
- Excellent interior fit and finish
- Supple ride quality over bad roads
- Physical buttons for climate control
Cons
- No diesel engine option available
- No specific Level 2 ADAS technology
- The steering feel could be more engaging
- Base trims miss out on the digital driver display
Verdict
The Audi A4 is a highly competent and charming luxury sedan. It does not try to win you over with overly complicated touchscreens or aggressive styling. Instead, it gets most of the fundamentals right.
The 2.0-litre engine is quick, the gearbox is snappy, and the cabin is a genuinely quiet place to spend time. The physical controls are a breath of fresh air in a market obsessed with digital menus. While the lack of a diesel engine might turn some buyers away, the petrol motor is more than up to the task. It strikes a brilliant balance between everyday comfort and strong performance, and if you want a sensible, well-built, and understated German sedan, the A4 should be right at the top of your list.
Audi A4 Mileage

- Stellar entry level saloon4.040 TFSI Premium Plus(Petrol)PerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportThe Audi A4 is a stellar entry level saloon in terms of it's looks with great road presence. A lot of attention to detail is taken care of while manufacturing of the car be it the aerodynamics or the looks. It's most attractive part is the floating indicators on both front and rear which are very well calibrated as per Audi standards. This one is overall inspired from the A6 and the A8 L that are it's younger siblings. The more it has looks the more it has features also as Audi has still offered it's popular MMI system which offers a lot of configurations for performance and steering. Sunroof is a common thing in all luxury cars these days and it's suited for one's looking for more features. After the BS6 update, it offered a 2-liter TSI motor which is not very enthusiastic as it does not have great initial pickup and top end performance like the Jaguar XE and the BMW 3 series but it's better than Mercedes C Class and the Volvo S60 in the on paper war. There are many luxury car buyers who love diesel but however the TDI is discontinued due to which dieselhead can't opt for this car but petrolheads will surely get attracted towards it. One thing can be better is of course the headroom which is decent at the rear otherwise this car didn't left any chance to not opting for this model. About ownership can't say but as a value for money package, it has everything a luxury car buyer wants for himself or his family.By AbhirajPosted on: Apr 18, 2021 10:32 AM00
