car&bike Expert Take
“The Kia Carens Clavis EV is a practical, family-focused electric MPV that offers a spacious three-row cabin, smooth performance, and low running costs. It is well-suited for daily city use and occasional highway trips, but it is not ideal for buyers who frequently travel long distances and rely heavily on highway driving.”

Introduced as the electric version of the Carens Clavis, the Kia Carens Clavis EV brings a familiar MPV format into the EV space with a focus on practicality and family usage. While electric cars in India have largely been seen as city commuters, Kia has positioned this as a three-row people mover that can also handle occasional longer drives.
We evaluated whether an electric MPV actually makes sense for Indian buyers, especially those used to petrol and diesel options for road trips. What we found is that Kia has retained the strengths of the Clavis with space, comfort, and usability, while adding the refinement and smoothness that comes with an EV powertrain.

This review brings together inputs from the car&bike team, along with Seshan Vijayraghvan’s detailed evaluation of the Clavis EV in real-world conditions in our last detailed YouTube video. It competes with models like the MG Windsor EV and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, but stands out by offering a true three-row family experience. For buyers looking for a spacious and efficient electric car for everyday family use, the Clavis EV presents a sensible and well-rounded option.
The Kia Carens Clavis EV is offered with two battery pack options, and we found that both are tuned to balance smooth performance with family-focused usability. The smaller 42 kWh battery is more efficiency-oriented, while the larger 51.4 kWh unit improves performance and extends range.

Powertrain Specifications Tested
The following table lists the key specifications of the Kia Carens Clavis EV:
| Battery Pack | Power | Torque | Drivetrain |
| 42 kWh / 51.4 kWh | 133 – 169 bhp | 255 Nm | Front-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In city conditions, we found the Clavis EV easy to drive. The power delivery is smooth, and even in Eco mode, overtakes feel effortless. The regenerative braking is well-tuned, and the one-pedal mode can bring the car to a complete stop without much brake use.
Highway Driving
On the highway, we found the Clavis EV quick enough, reaching 100 kmph in under 10 seconds. Overtakes are easy, even with a full load. It feels stable at 80–100 kmph, but higher speeds start affecting the range.
Seshan notes,
“Smooth in the city and confident on the highway, the Clavis EV delivers a balanced driving experience tailored for everyday family use”
The Kia Carens Clavis EV keeps the same overall design as the standard Clavis, but adds a few EV-specific elements to differentiate it. It doesn’t try to completely reinvent the look, and that works well for buyers who prefer a familiar design.
Here’s a quick look at the key design elements:
- A front-mounted charging flap replaces the traditional grille
- Connected DRLs give it a more modern appearance
- Active air flaps improve aerodynamics and efficiency
- The LED lighting setup remains largely unchanged from the ICE version
- 17-inch aero-style alloy wheels are designed to improve range
From the side and rear, the silhouette remains almost identical, apart from small EV-specific changes like the absence of a tailpipe. Overall, it’s a subtle update that fits well with the car’s family-focused approach.

| Specification | Kia Carens Clavis EV | MG Windsor EV | Maruti Suzuki e Vitara |
| Length | 4,550 mm | 4,295 mm | 4,275 mm |
| Width | 1,800 mm | 1,850 mm | 1,800 mm |
| Height | 1,730 mm | 1,677 mm | 1,640 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,780 mm | 2,700 mm | 2,700 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 200 mm | 186 mm (unladen) | 180–185 mm |
| Curb Weight | 1,725–1,850 kg | 1,930 kg | 1,700–1,899 kg |
The Carens Clavis EV is the largest here in length and height. Its 2,780 mm wheelbase is also longer than both rivals, which helps with cabin space. The higher ground clearance adds to everyday usability. While the Windsor EV is wider, we found the Clavis EV’s proportions are better suited for a family-focused MPV.

The overall design of the Kia Carens Clavis EV remains unchanged, which makes it instantly familiar, especially for buyers upgrading from the ICE version. We found that this familiar approach works well for a family car, while the small updates improve both efficiency and modern appeal.
As Seshan observes,
“The design is largely unchanged from the Carens Clavis, with EV-specific updates.”
Front Profile
At the front, the traditional grille is replaced by a charging flap, which is seamlessly integrated into the fascia. You also get a new connected DRL setup that gives the car a slightly more modern look. Another important addition is the active air flaps, which open when cooling is needed and close to improve aerodynamics. We found that these changes are functional rather than just cosmetic.
Side Profile
From the side, the Clavis EV continues with the same MPV silhouette, which prioritises space and practicality. The highlight here is the new 17-inch aero-style alloy wheels, designed to improve efficiency. We also noticed that the overall stance remains unchanged, which keeps the car looking simple and purposeful.
Rear Profile
At the rear, there are hardly any changes. Apart from the absence of a tailpipe, the design remains identical to the standard Clavis. The clean and simple layout works well for a family MPV, even though there are no major visual updates here.
The overall cabin layout remains familiar, with additions like a floating centre console and dual 12.25-inch screens as standard. Material quality feels consistent, with leather-like finishes on key touchpoints and a clean, well-finished dashboard. We found that the cabin feels upmarket without being overly complex.

Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard design remains largely unchanged, but the EV version gets subtle enhancements like the floating centre console and updated interface. The dual screens are clear and easy to use, and the overall layout feels minimal yet functional. We noticed that the fit and finish are solid, with no visible inconsistencies, although the lower plastics are not as premium as the upper sections.
Seating Comfort
First Row
The front seats are comfortable and offer good cushioning for long drives. There is ample space, and even taller passengers can sit without feeling restricted. We found that the seats provide adequate support, and features like ventilation and practical storage areas around the driver improve everyday usability.
Second Row
The second row offers a lot of space and flexibility. The seats can slide and recline, allowing passengers to customise their seating posture. The flat floor improves space for three passengers, and under-thigh support is well maintained despite the battery placement. Overall, comfort is very similar to the ICE version, making it practical for family use.
Kia has positioned the Carens Clavis EV with a broad variant lineup, offering multiple trims along with two battery pack options. Buyers can choose between the standard range and long-range versions, with trims starting from HTK+ and going up to the fully loaded X-Line ER.
While it is priced higher than the petrol and diesel versions, it offers lower running costs, better refinement and a smoother driving experience. We evaluated the variant lineup and found that it caters to both value-focused buyers and those looking for a feature-loaded family car.
Kia Carens Clavis EV Ex-Showroom Price in India
Variant | Battery Pack | Power | Ex-Showroom Price |
HTK+ (Base) | 42 kWh | 133 bhp | Rs. 17.99 Lakh |
HTX E | 42 kWh | 133 bhp | Rs. 19.99 Lakh |
HTX | 42 kWh | 133 bhp | Rs. 20.49 Lakh |
HTX E ER | 51.4 kWh | 169 bhp | Rs. 21.99 Lakh |
HTX ER | 51.4 kWh | 169 bhp | Rs. 22.49 Lakh |
HTX+ ER / GTX+ ER / X-Line ER (Top) | 51.4 kWh | 169 bhp | Up to Rs. 24.99 Lakh |
For a family-focused electric MPV, range is an important factor, especially when the car will be used mostly in the city with occasional highway trips. The Clavis EV offers two battery pack options, each delivering a usable real-world range for everyday driving.

Here’s what we found during testing:
- The Clavis EV offers a claimed range of up to 490 km with the larger battery pack.
- With the 51.4 kWh battery, a real-world range of around 360 km is achievable.
- The smaller 42 kWh battery delivers about 300 km in real-world conditions.
Observed Range Efficiency During Testing
| Powertrain | Claimed Range | Real-World City Range | Real-World Highway Range |
| Single Motor (42 kWh) | 404 km | 300 km | 280–300 km |
| Single Motor (51.4 kWh) | 490 km | 360 km | 320–360 km |
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The Carens Clavis EV comes with six airbags as standard, covering all three rows. It also gets electronic stability control and other essential safety systems. During our evaluation, the car felt stable and predictable, which adds confidence for everyday family use.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
The Clavis EV is equipped with a 360-degree camera and a Level 2 ADAS suite. This includes features that assist with driving and improve safety in different conditions. We found that the ADAS is tuned well for Indian roads and works in the background without interrupting the driving experience.
Safety Verdict
The Kia Carens Clavis EV has not been crash-tested yet. However, with six airbags as standard, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS features, it comes across as a well-equipped and practical family EV that focuses on safety. It feels like a safe and sensible choice for everyday family use.
The Kia Carens Clavis EV carries forward the practical, family-focused layout of the standard Carens, while adding EV-specific elements that improve usability and storage.
Infotainment and Interface
- The Clavis EV comes with dual 12.25-inch screens as standard for the instrument cluster and infotainment system.
- The interface is clean and easy to use with high display quality and consistent responsiveness.
- Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available, but only through a wired connection.
- The system also integrates features like a rear camera and ADAS-related displays without feeling cluttered.
- Overall layout remains familiar, with small EV-specific touches like the floating centre console.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
- You get ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and automatic climate control.
- Wireless phone charging, multiple charging options, and voice commands are included for daily convenience.
- There is ample storage across the cabin, including large door pockets, under-armrest storage, and space under the floating centre console.
- The flat floor in the second row improves comfort for three passengers, especially on longer drives.
- The Clavis EV offers 216 litres of boot space with all three rows in use.
- It is sufficient for small luggage, like an overnight suitcase and a few laptop bags.
- With the rear rows folded, the space opens up significantly and can handle larger luggage or even camping setups.
- There is also a 25-litre frunk at the front, which is useful for storing charging cables and smaller items.
- Overall, the storage solutions are practical and well thought out for family use.
The Kia Carens Clavis EV is tuned for comfort and family use, while still feeling stable and easy to drive in most conditions.
City Driving
In the city, the Clavis EV feels easy to drive. We found the power delivery smooth, making traffic driving effortless. The suspension handles bumps well, and regenerative braking with multiple levels, including one-pedal mode, makes driving in stop-and-go traffic easier.
Highway Driving
On the highway, the Clavis EV feels stable and comfortable at 100–110 kmph. We found acceleration quick, with easy overtakes. At higher speeds, it can feel slightly bouncy and the range drops faster, so it is best driven at moderate speeds.

The Kia Carens Clavis EV is offered in multiple variants, allowing buyers to choose based on features and battery size. It is available in options across two battery packs: 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh.
Take a look at what each variant offers:
Variant | Battery & Power | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
HTK+ | 42 kWh, 133 bhp | Dual screens, LED headlights, 16-inch alloys, 6 airbags | Buyers looking for a practical and well-equipped base variant |
HTX E | 42 kWh, 133 bhp | Panoramic sunroof, wireless charger, air purifier, ambient lighting | Buyers wanting more comfort and convenience features |
HTX | 42 kWh, 133 bhp | Leatherette interior, ADAS, 360-degree camera | Buyers looking for added safety and a premium cabin |
HTX E ER | 51.4 kWh, 169 bhp | Larger battery, sunroof, wireless charger, air purifier | Buyers prioritising range with essential features |
HTX ER | 51.4 kWh, 169 bhp | 17-inch aero alloys, improved performance | Buyers who want better performance with longer range |
HTX+ ER | 51.4 kWh, 169 bhp | Ventilated seats, powered driver seat, Bose sound system | Buyers looking for a fully loaded family EV |
The Essentials That You Don't Get
- No wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- No ventilated second row seats
- No power tailgate
Choosing the right Carens Clavis EV variant mainly depends on how you plan to use it, whether it’s mostly city driving, occasional highway trips, or if you want more features.
Best for Daily City Use: HTK+ / HTX (42 kWh)
For city use, the smaller battery works well. The 404 km claimed range is more than enough for daily driving, and we found the real-world range of around 300 km to be practical. These variants also cover all essential features, making them a sensible choice if you don’t need extra range.
Best for Long Drives: HTX ER / HTX+ ER (51.4 kWh)
For longer drives, the bigger battery is the better option. With up to 490 km claimed range and around 360 km in real-world use, we found it more suitable for highways. The added performance and extra features also make longer journeys more comfortable.
Best Feature-Rich Option: HTX+ ER
The HTX+ ER gets everything, including ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and ADAS. We found these features genuinely improve comfort and convenience, especially for family use.
Best Value Overall: HTX
The HTX offers key features like ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and a premium cabin without going too high on price. We found this variant makes the most sense for most buyers.

The Kia Carens Clavis EV goes up against rivals like the MG Windsor EV and the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. While the Clavis EV focuses on practicality, space, and a family-friendly setup, these alternatives offer different strengths in range, battery size, and performance.
We evaluated how the Clavis EV compares with these rivals in terms of battery capacity, range, and performance to understand where it stands.
| Model | Battery Capacity | ARAI Range | Power Output | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Kia Carens Clavis EV | 42 - 51.4 kWh | 404 - 490 km | 133 - 169 bhp | Rs. 17.99 - 24.99 Lakh |
| MG Windsor EV | 38 - 52.9 kWh | 332 - 449 km | 134 bhp | Rs. 14 - 18.50 Lakh |
| Maruti Suzuki e Vitara | 49 - 61 kWh | 440 - 543 km | 142 - 172 bhp | Rs. 15.99 - 20.01 Lakh |
Which Electric Car Should You Choose?
- Choose the Kia Carens Clavis EV if you want a practical, spacious seven-seater with a comfortable drive and low running costs for family use.
- Choose the MG Windsor EV if you want a more affordable electric option with a decent range for city use.
- Choose the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara if you want a slightly higher range and a more conventional SUV alternative.
Pros
- Spacious and practical cabin
- Smooth and refined driving experience
- Ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, and dual screens
- Low running cost, especially when charged at home
- Comfortable ride quality suited for family usage
Cons
- Higher upfront cost compared to petrol and diesel variants
- No wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
- Slightly bouncy ride at higher speeds
Verdict
The Kia Carens Clavis EV takes what already worked well with the Carens and adds the benefits of an electric powertrain. It remains a practical and spacious MPV, but now feels smoother, quieter, and easier to drive in everyday conditions. During our evaluation, we found the cabin to be comfortable for all passengers, the feature list well thought out, and the overall usability very strong for family needs.
There are a few limitations to consider. The real-world range, especially on highways, requires planning, and the higher upfront cost compared to ICE versions may not suit everyone. The lack of wireless smartphone connectivity and an official crash test rating are also small gaps in an otherwise complete package.
Seshan Vijayraghvan concludes,
“There isn’t much to complain about, as this is a well-rounded package.”
