Mahindra Scorpio Classic car&bike Expert Take

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic doesn’t try to reinvent itself — it proudly stands tall as the SUV that built its reputation the hard way. It’s rugged, unapologetic and made for buyers who still believe an SUV should feel tough and dependable. It may not match the Scorpio N in flashy tech, but it delivers character and honest capability at a sharper price.

As Shams Raza Naqvi says in the review, “This feels closer to the Scorpio N than ever before — and that’s saying something.” That statement alone shows how far the Classic has come while staying true to its roots.

Expert Review Context

Shams Raza Naqvi, Senior Editor at car&bike, brings over 20 years of automotive journalism experience and more than 3,00,000 km of driving across cars and SUVs of every kind. For this review, he tested the Mahindra Scorpio Classic in real-world conditions — dense city traffic, long highway runs and even rough, broken stretches that resemble rural roads. Both the S Diesel and the higher S11 variant were driven to understand differences in comfort and usability. The idea was simple: see whether the Classic still delivers on its promise of rugged dependability while feeling genuinely improved for today’s buyers.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic Overview

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic carries more than just a name — it carries over 20 years of legacy. Few SUVs in India have built such a loyal following, especially in rural and semi-urban markets where durability and road presence matter more than touchscreen size. The Scorpio Classic continues to serve that core audience while coexisting alongside the more modern Scorpio N. Instead of replacing it, Mahindra chose to refine and reposition it.
This facelift isn’t about dramatic reinvention. It’s about continuity, the ‘Twin Peaks’ branding, subtle exterior tweaks and improved ride quality. It signals evolution, not transformation. It still looks like a Scorpio- tall, muscular and confident, but is noticeably more sorted underneath.
The idea is simple: keep the affordability and rugged appeal intact while making it better to live with every day.
As Shams Raza Naqvi, mentions in the review, “It may wear the Classic badge, but it doesn’t feel outdated anymore.” That balance between legacy and improvement defines its positioning.

Mahindra has kept the Scorpio range simple but strategic. Each caters to a slightly different audience, but both carry the same DNA of toughness and road presence.

Scorpio Classic S

The S variant is the Mahindra Scorpio Classic base model. It gets the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. This model concentrates on basics - high torque, high ground clearance, dominating stature - and avoids excessive extravagance. It fits customers who prefer durability and affordability the most.

Scorpio Classic S11

The S11 is the better-equipped Classic. It adds features like a nine-inch touchscreen, alloy wheels and more premium cabin touches. You also get the option of captain seats in the second row. For most buyers choosing the Classic, this is the sweet spot.
Read: Mahindra Scorpio Classic

At the heart of the Mahindra Scorpio Classic is the familiar 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, now updated and refined for this generation.

EnginePowerTorqueGearbox
2.2L mHawk Diesel130 bhp300 Nmsix-speed Manual

On paper, 130 bhp may not sound dramatic, but the real story lies in the torque delivery. You start feeling the pull from as low as 1000 rpm, which makes city driving surprisingly easy for a ladder-frame SUV. The torque builds in a strong, steady wave, and overtaking on highways feels confident rather than rushed.
The 0–100 kmph sprint takes roughly 13.5–14 seconds, which is respectable for a body-on-frame diesel SUV in this segment. It’s not built for quick drag races — it’s built for steady, dependable acceleration.
The engine is now 55 kg lighter, and Mahindra claims up to 15 per cent better efficiency. NVH levels are noticeably improved too. It still sounds like a diesel, but it no longer comes across as crude. The clutch is light, which helps in traffic, and the six-speed manual has short throws — though shifts can feel slightly notchy at times.

There’s no automatic gearbox and no 4x4 option, which may disappoint some buyers. But this version is clearly aimed at those who prefer a straightforward, mechanical SUV experience
As Shams Raza Naqvi says, This engine feels more refined and far more usable than before.” It’s still an old-school diesel at heart — just a much better one.

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic may carry the “Classic” badge, but visually, it still commands attention the moment it appears in your rear-view mirror. It doesn’t try to look modern in a crossover way. It looks like a proper SUV — tall, upright and confident.

Front

Up front, the new chrome grille with the Twin Peaks logo instantly refreshes the look. It feels premium without losing its tough identity. The projector headlamps offer better illumination than before, and the LED DRLs add a modern touch. It still looks muscular, but now with a bit more polish.

Side

From the side, the 17-inch alloy wheels fill the arches well and give it a planted stance. The side steps make ingress easier, especially given its height. Subtle cladding changes add to the rugged appeal. It still looks bulky — and that’s exactly the point.

Rear

At the back, the tall, tower-shaped tail lamps remain a

signature element. The new Galaxy Grey colour option looks particularly classy and adds freshness to the lineup.

As Shams Raza Naqvi notes, The Scorpio Classic still carries that unmistakable road presence.” It may not be flashy, but it remains bold and commanding — just the way loyalists like it.

Step inside the Mahindra Scorpio Classic and you immediately notice the beige cabin theme. It makes the interior feel airy and more premium than the older, darker layouts. The nine-inch touchscreen in the centre is a welcome upgrade and supports modern connectivity, though it isn’t as slick as newer systems in rivals. The part-digital instrument cluster adds a touch of freshness, but overall, the layout still reminds you that this SUV has old-school roots.
Key highlights and limitations include:

  • Nine-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Part digital instrument cluster
  • Beige interior theme
  • Limited charging points
  • Storage space could be better organised
  • Second row captain seats in S11
  • Tight third-row legroom
  • Optional nine-seater side-facing layout

Space is still one of its biggest strengths. The second row, especially in the S11 with captain seats, feels comfortable and commanding. However, the third row is best suited for short trips. Storage areas feel slightly underthought, and charging point availability could have been better for large families.

As Shams Raza Naqvi says, “Ergonomically it's a mixed pack — some things feel improved, but some areas still show their age.” That sums it up well. The Scorpio Classic remains spacious and practical, but parts of the cabin do feel dated.

Pros

  • Strong low-end diesel torque
  • Commanding SUV road presence
  • Improved ride quality
  • Affordable ladder-frame toughness
  • Loyal, proven brand legacy

Cons

  • Only two airbags
  • No automatic option
  • Steering too heavy in city
  • Cabin feels outdated

Verdict

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic is not trying to be modern, and that’s exactly why it works. It is a proud, old-school SUV that delivers toughness, presence and dependable diesel strength without chasing trends. If you want flashy screens and cutting-edge safety tech, look elsewhere. But if you want a rugged, commanding machine that feels built to last and comes at a sharper price than the Scorpio N, this is the one. It stands firm in its identity, and it doesn’t apologise for it.
As Shams Raza Naqvi sums it up, The Scorpio Classic stays true to its roots, and that honesty is its biggest strength. That clarity of purpose is what makes it special.

Best For

  • Rural and semi-urban buyers
  • Traditional SUV loyalists
  • Buyers prioritising rugged durability
  • Large families needing space

Not Ideal For

  • Tech-focused urban buyers
  • Safety-first modern families
  • Automatic gearbox seekers
  • Comfort-over-character drivers

The Scorpio Classic's 2.2-litre diesel engine delivers strong low-end torque, making it well-suited for city driving, highway cruising, and carrying heavy loads. The gearbox is smooth, and the ladder-frame chassis provides the durability expected from a traditional SUV.The cabin is spacious and functional, with features such as a 9-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, and steering-mounted controls in higher variants. However, the overall design and material quality lag behind newer rivals.
