New Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno was introduced in the premium hatchback segment in 2015 and soon became one of the strongest nameplates of the brand under the Nexa retail channel. The second-generation model, which came out in 2022, was positioned as a major update rather than an outright reinvention. It brought new styling, a redesigned cabin, and newer technology, but retained the familiar 1.2-litre petrol engine.
This review is based on the road tests conducted by Shams Raza Naqvi for car&bike, who tested both the five-speed manual and the AMT variants when the 2022 model was launched. Built on Maruti Suzuki's revised HEARTECT platform, the Baleno gained almost 55-60 kg over its predecessor as a result of revisions in its structure and suspension. The focus shifted towards improving ride quality, adding safety features, and improving perceived premium appeal. Positioned between mass-market hatchbacks such as the Swift and more expensive turbo-driven rivals such as the Hyundai i20, the Baleno aims to appeal to buyers who are less concerned about outright performance but more about refinement, efficiency, and day-to-day usability.
