New Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Old: What Are The Differences?
What's New on Maruti Suzuki Swift?
Introduction
- The current iteration of the Swift hatchback was first unveiled in October 2023 as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.
- This same model is Suzuki's new Swift and has now been launched globally.
- Called as the carmaker's fourth-generation global compact supermini, it still offers the Swift's goodies and niceties.
- Moreover, the hatchback comes loaded with new tech and features apart from the cosmetic changes.

Exterior of the Swift
- This is the new-generation Swift, and its evident at a glance that this version is an evolution of the existing Swift.
- Sporting a clamshell bonnet, the Swift gets a reprofiled grille though the overall shape is more or less the same.
- Now, the sweptback headlights feature L-shaped LED DRLs making it slightly different from its outgoing model.
- The rear section is identical to the outgoing version, albeit with some changes.
- And these are structural changes with an angular bumper and tail lamps with bright and distinct LED inserts.

Interior of the Swift
- Inside the new Swift's cabin, the seating layout remains the same.
- Besides, the dashboard with a layered design is identical to other Maruti Suzuki products including the Fronx and the Baleno.
- Nevertheless, close inspection reveals tweaks to the central floating touchscreen head unit with an HD screen.
- Moreover, the Swift gets a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel and a new HVAC module.
- Notably, Maruti has globally equipped the Swift with ADAS, but not for the Indian market.
- Nonetheless, the brand's Suzuki Connect app is offered on Android and iOS.

Powertrain of the Swift
- The Swift is available with both petrol and CNG powertrain options in India.
- A 1.2-litre petrol engine can be seen under the hood of the hatchback.
- This NA mill produces 82bhp and 112Nm of torque.
- It comes mated to either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT.
- Meanwhile, the Swift CNG is also powered by the same three-cylinder petrol engine with a CNG kit.
- In CNG mode, the power output is reduced to 69bhp and 102Nm torque.
- Interestingly, Maruti claims a 32.85km/kg mileage in the only five-speed manual avatar.

Maruti Suzuki Swift: car&bike Expert Take
Back in 2005, the tagline said, “You’re The Fuel!” and even today, the Maruti Suzuki Swift still feels built around you. The new Maruti Suzuki Swift facelift looks sharper, feels lighter, and focuses more than ever on efficiency without killing the fun. Driving it through city traffic, you immediately notice how eager and easy it feels. It is not about brute power anymore, it is about playfulness. As Seshan Vijayraghvan says, “The Swift has always been about fun without fear — and this one still makes you grin.” If you love simple, honest driving joy, this hatchback still gets it right.

Watch: Maruti Suzuki Review: More Efficient, Yet Fun-To-Drive!
Seshan Vijayraghvan stepped into automotive journalism for the sheer thrill of experiencing exceptional cars and bikes. The South-Indian Mumbaikar still dreams of parking a Premier Padmini and a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 in his garage.
This time, he drove the Maruti Suzuki Swift top model ZXi Plus AMT through dense Noida traffic, stretched its legs on the six-lane Noida Greater Noida Expressway, pushed it across the 165 km Yamuna Expressway toward Agra, and cruised along the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. That mix tells you what the car is really like in your world. As he often says, you only understand a car when you drive it where people actually live, commute, and overtake.

Since 2005, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has not just been a hatchback, it has been a movement. When it first arrived, it changed how you looked at small cars. It was sporty, sharp, and built for people who actually enjoyed driving. Nearly two decades later, the fourth generation keeps that spirit alive but evolves it for today.
Built on the lightweight HEARTECT platform, the new Swift feels tighter and more efficient. Under the hood sits the new 1.2-litre Z Series three cylinder petrol engine. Yes, it has one less cylinder than before, but what you gain is better fuel efficiency and a smoother everyday drive. As Seshan Vijayraghvan points out in his detailed road test, the focus now is not raw power, but usable performance that fits your daily life.

Globally, the Swift has been one of Suzuki’s biggest success stories, and in India it still sits between practical choices like the Hyundai i20, the Tata Tiago, and even its own cousin, the Baleno. At its core, this is still the small car that prioritises driving joy over everything else.
Explore: Swift Key Specifications
The Maruti Suzuki Swift range is simple, clear, and built around what you actually need. Whether you are buying your first car or upgrading for more comfort, there is a version that fits your life without confusion.
Base Model – Maruti Suzuki Swift base model
The LXi trim keeps things honest and straightforward. You get the new 1.2-litre petrol engine paired with a manual gearbox only. No fancy extras, no distractions. This is the version you pick if you want reliability, low running costs, and solid everyday usability. It makes perfect sense for fleet buyers and first time car owners who just want a dependable hatchback that feels light and easy to drive.
Mid Variant
Move up to the VXi or ZXi, and things start to feel more modern. You get the infotainment system, better connectivity, and more convenience features. This is the sweet spot for most buyers. You have just the right combination of features and price without straining. If you want value with comfort, this is the one you should seriously consider.
Top Model – Maruti Suzuki Swift top model
The ZXi Plus is where the car feels fully loaded. You get the nine-inch SmartPlay Pro Plus screen, six-airbags, cruise control, and premium detailing inside and out. This is for you if you want your small hatch to feel complete and feature-rich without stepping into a bigger segment.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift has always had attitude, and this new generation sharpens it even more. It still looks like a hatchback that wants to move, even when it is parked.
Front
At the front, you immediately notice the revised grille. Chrome has been done away with and a smooth black finish has been applied, giving the Swift a sleeker, sportier front. The LED projector headlamps look sharper, and the L-shaped LED DRLs add a modern touch. The clamshell style bonnet makes it look wider and more planted. When you see it coming in your rearview mirror, it still feels confident and youthful.
Rear
At the rear, the C-shaped LED tail lamps stand out. They give the Swift a sporty signature, especially at night. The badging is minimal, and the design feels clean. As Seshan Vijayraghvan says, “It still looks eager, even when standing still.” In tight traffic, this compact hatch still turns heads and slips through gaps with ease.

Step inside the Maruti Suzuki Swift and you notice that it keeps things sporty and functional. The all black theme continues, but the design feels cleaner and more modern.
Cabin Highlights
- Nine-inch touchscreen
- Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto
- Flat-bottom steering wheel
- Automatic climate control
- 265-litre boot space
As Seshan Vijayraghvan puts it, “The Swift cabin feels simple, but it gets the fundamentals absolutely right.”

Rear Seat Reality
When you move to the back, the story stays honest. Two adults sit comfortably without complaints. Three across will feel tight, especially on longer drives. Legroom is average for the segment, but headroom is good even if you are close to six feet tall. The seat cushioning is adequate for daily commutes, though long highway trips may need a short break. Overall, this is a driver-centric cabin that still works well enough for your small family.

At the heart of the Maruti Suzuki Swift sits the new 1.2-litre Z Series three-cylinder petrol engine. On paper, it makes 81 bhp and 112 Nm of torque. That may not sound explosive, but this car has never been about numbers alone. As Seshan Vijayraghvan says, “This is not about brute force — it’s about how alive the car feels.” And that is exactly what you notice when you start driving
| Engine | Power | Torque | Gearbox | 0–100 kmph |
| 1.2-litre Z-Series Petrol | 81 bhp | 112 Nm | 5MT / AMT | 12-13 sec |
| Source: car&bike | ||||
The character is clearly different from the older four-cylinder unit. At idle, you can sense mild vibration typical of a three-cylinder engine. Once on the move, refinement improves and the car feels light and eager.
What Stands Out
- Strong low and mid-range response
- Light kerb weight advantage
- Quick throttle reactions
- Easy city drivability
On highways, overtakes require planning. The engine pulls cleanly up to higher revs but does not deliver a surge of power.
Limitations
- Not quick off the line
- AMT shifts noticeable
- Three-cylinder vibrations at idle
- No turbo option
- Limited high-speed punch
This is a car built for urban playfulness, not outright speed.

The Swift continues to impress with its balance between comfort and agility.
Ride Quality
- Soft suspension tuning
- Absorbs small bumps well
- Slight bounce over large speed breakers
- Comfortable for daily commutes
Broken city patches are handled confidently. Larger
undulations can introduce mild vertical movement, but never discomfort.
Handling Character
- Light steering in traffic
- Easy gap threading
- Stable at 100–120 Kmph
- Steering feedback could improve
The Swift remains one of the most agile hatchbacks in its segment. It feels compact, alert, and enjoyable in tight urban conditions.
Efficiency has always been a strong point of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, and this new Z Series engine keeps that promise alive. In daily driving, you can clearly see that the car is tuned for better fuel economy without making it feel dull or lifeless. Whether you are crawling through city traffic or cruising on an open expressway, the Swift remains easy on your wallet.
Here is how the mileage figures stack up:
| Variant | Claimed | City | Highway |
| 1.2-litre Petrol MT / AMT | 22.9 kmpl | 19 kmpl | 22 kmpl |
| Source: car&bike | |||
In real-world mixed driving, you can expect around 21.5 km per litre if you drive with a light foot. The 37-litre fuel tank gives you a practical range for both daily office runs and weekend getaways.

If you want a hatchback that balances fun with frugality, the Maruti Suzuki Swift proves once again that it is built to be an efficient daily commuter you can rely on
With the new Maruti Suzuki Swift, safety finally feels like a priority and not just a checklist item. You now get six airbags in the top trims, and that is a big step forward compared to older generations. The car is built on the HEARTECT platform, which is designed to be lighter yet stronger. That means better structural rigidity and improved crash energy absorption. Compared to the previous Swift, you can feel the maturity in how the car is engineered. It does not just focus on being fun anymore; it also focuses on protecting you.
Key Safety Features
- Six airbags on top trims
- ABS with EBD
- Electronic Stability Program
- Hill Hold Assist
- ISOFIX child seat anchors
- Rear parking sensors and camera
The inclusion of ESP and hill hold assist across variants shows a clear evolution. The India-spec Swift has not yet been tested by Bharat NCAP. However, you can see the shift in mindset. The new Swift feels more responsible without losing its personality. For you as a driver, that means peace of mind along with driving enjoyment.

Step inside the Maruti Suzuki Swift and you quickly realise that the tech is practical and easy to use. The nine-inch infotainment screen sits neatly on the dashboard and feels crisp and responsive. With wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you simply get in, connect, and drive. The sound system tuned by Arkamys adds depth to your music, especially on long highway runs. It may not shake the cabin like a premium system, but it sounds clean and balanced.
Tech Highlights
- Nine-inch SmartPlay Pro Plus infotainment
- Arkamys sound tuning
- Reverse parking camera
- Cruise control
- Wireless charger
- Suzuki Connect connected tech

In daily use, the reverse camera makes tight parking easy, and cruise control is a blessing on open expressways. The wireless charger keeps your phone topped up without messy cables. Suzuki Connect gives connected features that let you track and monitor your car. Nothing here feels flashy just for show. The Maruti Suzuki Swift gives you smart features that actually improve your drive, without unnecessary gimmicks.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift competes in one of the busiest hatchback segments in India. You are not short of options. The Hyundai i20 brings premium appeal, the Tata Tiago pushes value hard, and the Maruti Baleno offers more space and power on paper. But if you care about how a car feels when you drive it, the comparison becomes more interesting.
| Model | Engine | Power bhp | Torque (Nm) | Mileage (kmpl) | Price (Ex showroom) |
| Maruti Suzuki Swift | 1.2-litre Petrol | 81 | 112 | 20–30 | Rs.5.79–8.65 lakh |
| Hyundai i20 | 1.2-litre Petrol | 82 | 114.7 | 19–20 | Rs.6.87–10.52 lakh |
| Tata Tiago | 1.2-litre Petrol | 101–113 | 96.5–113 | 20–24 | Rs.4.57–7.82 lakh |
| Maruti Baleno | 1.2-litre Petrol | 88.5 | 113 | 22 | Rs.5.99–9.10 lakh |
On paper, the Baleno looks stronger and more spacious. The i20 feels more premium inside. The Tiago undercuts most rivals on price. But numbers do not tell you how a car makes you feel.

As Seshan Vijayraghvan says, “The Swift may not be the biggest, but it’s still the one you want to drive.” The Maruti Suzuki Swift remains the most playful and engaging option here. If you want the hatchback that makes everyday driving enjoyable, this is still the enthusiast’s pick.
Pros
- Most fun to drive
- Excellent real-world efficiency
- Light and eager handling
- Improved safety across variants
- Easy city-friendly dimensions
Cons
- Rear seat space is only average
- AMT is still not seamless
- Cabin lacks a premium feel
- No turbo option available
- Highway punch feels limited
Verdict
The Maruti Suzuki Swift proves that small cars can still feel exciting in a world chasing size and screens. It is not trying to be an SUV like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, and that honesty works in its favour. If you read any Maruti Suzuki Fronx expert review, you will see how crossovers are becoming the trend. But if you are young, urban, and actually enjoy driving, this hatchback speaks your language. It feels light, responsive, and alive in a way few rivals do. It is not built to impress everyone. It is built to make you smile every single day. And honestly, that clarity is refreshing.
As Seshan Vijayraghvan would say, this is still the hatchback that remembers why driving should be fun.

- Reliable and fun to drive5.0LXI(Petrol)PerformanceMileageComfortCost of OwnershipValue for MoneySafetyStylingSales SupportMaruti Suzuki is these days not very serious about the build quality and safety of the cars like they used to be when talking about their older cars. There were no standard dual airbags but build quality was just awesome and same case was with the first generation Swift. Styling was no doubt phenomenal and that's something even the new Swift has but the comprise is there very much on the build quality in latest one. The 1.3-petrol engine which Maruti Suzuki offered was very much fun to drive and acceleration was just brutal in cities. Steering wheel is great for the cities but if talking about feel and feedback then that can be judged only on highways. LXI model didn't have any power windows and stuff but one thing that was insane was air conditioning as it doesn't make very much noise. Reliability is if course great as Maruti Suzuki cars do not lack on spare parts availability. Gearbox will surely be a trouble if you try to shift to first gear as my Swift already has a very tight first gear otherwise every gear is great.By AbhirajPosted on: Dec 05, 2021 10:46 AM00
