Valtteri Bottas managed to convert his pole position advantage into a win in the 2019 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The driver took his second victory of the season fending off a late charge from teammate Lewis Hamilton in what was this year's fourth consecutive 1-2 finish for Mercedes. Coming in third was Scuderia Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel taking his third podium of the season followed by Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing in fourth place. Bottas' win catapults him to the top of the drivers' standings.

Virgin Racing driver Robin Frijns has become the eighth different driver to win the eighth race of the 2018-19 Formula E championship. Frijns took his maiden Formula E win in the Paris e-Prix at the end of a chaotic day. The race conditions were challenging due to the heavy rain storm, which meant the race started under the safety car and made for an incident-ridden race. Coming in second was Andre Lotterer of Techeetah, while Daniel Abt of Audi Abt finished third. Mahindra Racing's Pascal Wehrlein and Jerome d'Ambrosio were penalised for the wrong tyre pressure and started at the back of the grid.

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku has been one of the most dramatic over the past two seasons, but this year, the drama has begun right from the practice sessions. In a major lapse, a loose drain cover struck George Russell's Williams F1 car during the first practice session on Friday. The incident resulted in nearly destroying the Williams car, which is being rebuilt for the race this Sunday, while also opening an investigation into the matter by the FIA. In a statement, the FIA determined that a "break on an underside mounting" led to the drain coming loose.
