Latest Update on Duster
Renault has launched the Duster facelift in India. The facelifted Duster comes with a host of cosmetic changes along with a range of new and updated features. This is the second major facelift for the Duster SUV in India, and it's expected to keep the Duster brand relevant until Renault is ready with the third-generation model, which will arrive in 2023. And although the next-gen model will be petrol only, the 2019 Renault Duster facelift continues to come in both petrol and diesel engine options.
Visually, the facelifted Renault Duster borrows its styling cues from the new, Euro-spec Dacia Duster, which is largely evident from the new three-slat chrome front grille, called the new tri-winged full chrome grille. It's flanked by a set of all-new headlamps equipped with both projector lights and LED daytime running lamps. The SUV also gets new dual tone body colour front bumper which features muscular skid plates and black housings on either end with new round foglamps. One of the main visual highlights is the new 16-inch Everest Diamond Cut alloy wheels, along with other visual bits like the kayak roof rails, body coloured ORVM, matte black tailgate embellisher and Waterfall LED tail lamps. The Renault Duster facelift is now also offered in two new colour options - 'Caspian Blue' and 'Mahogany Brown'.
The cabin has also gone through a host of changes, along with the new Midnight black interior theme. The dashboard has been heavily restyled, featuring a new three-spoke steering wheel with soft-touch buttons for music, telephony and Cruise Control among others. The SUV also gets a new centre console with glossy silver inserts on either side and new central air-con vents with chrome bezels. The dashboard also features the Duster lettering on the front passenger side with a new blue styling element. The interior door panels are soft-touch material and come with contrast Blue stitching that can also be seen on the leatherette seats.
Renault has also added ice blue graphics for the instrument cluster with a multi-information display (MID) unit offering all vehicle information. The gizmo list also includes a 7-inch touchscreen display with MediaNAV Evolution that comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition and EcoGuide - a system that monitors driving patterns and provides guidelines to improve efficiency. Other features include a fully automatic climate control, illuminated and cooled glovebox and more. In fact, the new Duster offers a range of 38 different categories of innovative accessories. As for safety features, the updated Duster is compliant with BNCAP front, side & pedestrian crash norms and adheres to the new, more stringent safety norms. It also comes with ABS with EBD, driver and passenger airbags, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder & speed alert as standard, along with optional bits like - Reverse Parking Camera, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill-Start Assist.
Under the hood, the 2019 Renault Duster features the same 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, but unlike what we had expected they are still BS4 compliant. The petrol engine is tuned to churn out 105 bhp and develop 142 Nm of peak torque and comes mated to a 5-speed manual and an optional CVT automatic transmission. The 1.5-litre oil burner, on the other hand, continues to come in two states of tune - 84 bhp and 108 bhp, developing 200 Nm and 245 Nm of peak torque respectively. While the 84 bhp version comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard, the 108 bhp model comes with a 6-speed manual and an optional AMT (automated manual transmission) unit. The Duster continues to be the only SUV in its segment to offer an all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

Renault Duster Expert Review
The compact SUV space has definitely been one of the most keenly contested car segments in our country in recent times. There are some very appealing cars present here and it isn't easy to choose one. But much before the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier, MG Hector and the Kia Seltos came along, there was a car that started it all. It was the Renault Duster. And it was introduced as an affordable, compact SUV which had it all - space, great ride quality and strong performance. Earlier this year, Renault dropped the engine and went petrol-only with the Duster, and thus we saw the entry of a new turbo petrol engine joining the existing naturally aspirated motor.
Now the Renault Duster received a facelift in 2019, and not much has changes since then. The SUV gets the bold new grille with chrome slats, projector lamps, chunky roof rails and more. The new Turbo variant additionally comes with red accents on the front grille, the tail gate, the roof rails the fog lamp cover all get them. The Duster lettering too is in red. Otherwise the full chrome grille, dual tone body coloured front bumper with skid plates, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, LED tail lamps and the diamond cut alloys are the same as the facelifted version. There are 7 colour options on offer, including the new Mahogany Brown.
Inside, the black interiors give this cabin some bit of uniqueness. The familiar 7-inch touch screen is here too and comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity and voice recognition as well. You get steering mounted controls and an Arkamys tuned sound system with 4 speakers and 2 front tweeters. As always, the cabin is spacious, and the interiors feel a tad bit better than the pre-2019 facelift car. But despite this improvement in terms of quality and features the cabin of the Duster is a far cry from some the other cars in the segment. While most of its rivals feature wireless chargers and sunroofs, the Duster doesn't even get rear AC vents or telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel. It is also not a connected car but one feature that comes in handy is the pre-cooling function which switches on the engine and AC even before you enter the car, just by pressing a button on the key fob. You'll find this feature on both the manual or CVT variants and it works as long as the car can detect the key, which is just about a few metres. The boot space of 475 litres also offers some consolation.
The 2020 Renault Duster come with two petrol engine options. The first one is the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that is tuned to churn out 105 bhp and develops a peak torque of 142 Nm, and it comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. Then you have the new 1.3-litre, turbocharged petrol engine that makes 154 bhp and a peak torque of 254 Nm. This one is mated to a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic. All that power and torque means this is a car which lets you have a lot of fun right from the word go. Even the new 7 step CVT which performs beautifully with this engine, and you actually look forward to those overtaking manoeuvres or that traffic light turning green to just put your foot down just to see how quickly it responds. And it does. However, we do miss the paddle shifters on this one. It would have certainly been a welcome addition.
Safety features include - ABS with EBD, driver and passenger airbags, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder speed alert as standard, along with optional bits like - Reverse Parking Camera, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill-Start Assist.
The Duster comes in 3 key variants - RXE, RXS, and RXZ, for both the petrol engine options, and with the optional CVT automatic trims, we get a total of eight variants. All are priced between Rs. 8.59 lakh to Rs. 13.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). As a reference, the Creta starts at Rs. 9.82 lakh, while prices for the Kia Seltos start at Rs. 9.89 lakh (both ex-showroom, Delhi). In fact, the Duster's Japanese cousin, the Nissan Kicks too is priced starting at Rs. 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This means the Renault Duster is the most affordable off the lot.
Pros & Cons of Duster
Gets a powerful turbo petrol engine
New CVT automatic unit performs well
The Duster continued to offer great ride and handling
No diesel engine on offer
Could do with more premium features
Doesn’t get 4x4 option anymore
Final Verdict on Duster
The Renault Duster does miss out of some of the more common premium features in its segment like a sunroof, rear AC vents, wireless charger, or ventilated seats. However, it’s the most affordable SUV in its class, and for the price you get decent creature comforts, a powerful turbo petrol engine, and great driving dynamics, which make it one of the best driver’s SUV in the segment. And if you are looking for that then the Duster is worth considering.
