car&bike Expert Take
“The Tesla Model Y focuses on technology, space and everyday practicality. We found it suits buyers who prioritise features, performance and a modern driving experience. It is not ideal for those seeking plush ride comfort or traditional luxury, as the firm suspension and screen-heavy controls take time to adjust.”

After what felt like a long wait, Tesla has finally entered the Indian market with the Model Y as its first offering. Known globally for pushing boundaries in technology and rethinking how cars are built and used, Tesla positions the Model Y as a large, tech-forward electric SUV with a slightly coupe-like design. We evaluated it in the context of Indian conditions, especially given its pricing, which places it alongside entry-level luxury EVs.
From our experience, the Model Y does not try to follow traditional definitions of luxury or familiarity. It is a car that leans heavily on minimalism, software-driven controls, and a different approach to everyday usability. We found that while it feels instantly approachable to drive, it also asks you to adapt to its unique way of doing things.

This review combines detailed observations from the car and bike team, along with Bilal Firfiray, on its design, interior experience, performance, and practicality in our detailed YouTube video. It reflects on how well the Model Y fits into the current Indian EV market, where infrastructure and buyer expectations keep changing.
The Tesla Model Y’s is more about smooth, effortless performance and less about outright aggression. Buyers get two configurations here, both focused on delivering usable performance along with a strong driving range.

Powertrain Options Tested
The following table lists the current configurations available in this EV:
| Configuration | Power | Range (WLTP) | 0-100 kmph |
| RWD | 295 bhp | 500 km | 5.9 seconds |
| Long Range RWD | 295 bhp | 661 km | 5.6 seconds |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In traffic, the Model Y feels easy to drive. We found the steering to be light, making parking and tight manoeuvres simple. Once you get used to selecting the drive from the screen, it behaves like any EV, smooth and quick to respond. The single-pedal drive mode also reduces the need to use the brakes in stop-go conditions.

Highway Driving
On the highway, the Model Y is a strong cruiser. It reaches triple-digit speeds easily and maintains them without effort. We found acceleration to remain strong even at higher speeds, while the cabin stays calm. It feels stable and confidence-inspiring on long drives.
As Bilal writes,
“At first, it feels like any modern EV with its smooth, silent, and easy to drive manners.”
The Tesla Model Y does not follow the usual SUV template. We found that its shape sits somewhere between a sedan and an SUV-coupe, with a length of nearly 4.8 metres, making it comparable to large SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner. Tesla focuses more on aerodynamic efficiency than visual drama.

Here’s a summary of the car’s most noticeable elements:
- The proportions are clean and well-balanced, with no unnecessary design elements or clutter.
- It has a smooth, rounded roofline, flush door handles, and aero-focused detailing throughout.
- The front skips a conventional grille and badge, yet remains instantly recognisable.
- The connected tail lamp setup uses a reflective lighting effect, adding a subtle but unique touch.

Tesla Model Y vs BYD Sealion 7 vs BMW iX1 Dimensions
| Dimension | Tesla Model Y | BYD Sealion 7 | BMW iX1 |
| Length | 4,751 mm – 4,790 mm | 4,830 mm | 4,500 mm |
| Width | 1,920 mm | 1,925 mm | 1,845 mm |
| Height | 1,624 mm | 1,620 mm | 1,612 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,890 mm | 2,930 mm | 2,692 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 167 mm | 163 mm – 170 mm | 170 mm – 190 mm |
| Curb Weight | 1,884 kg – 1,998 kg | 2,225 kg – 2,410 kg | 1,940 kg |
Yes, on paper, the BYD Sealion 7 is the largest and heaviest here, while the BMW iX1 is clearly the most compact. We found that the Tesla Model Y sits right in between as it offers a longer wheelbase than the iX1 and dimensions that translate into a strong road presence, without feeling as bulky as the Sealion 7.
The Tesla Model Y follows a clean and simple design approach. We found that it avoids sharp styling and instead focuses on smooth surfaces and aerodynamic efficiency. Its shape sits between a sedan and an SUV coupe, and the overall size feels larger in person.
Front Profile
The front does away with a traditional grille and even a badge. A full-width light bar stands out, while the LED headlamps sit lower on the bumper. We found the design to be minimal, with no unnecessary elements.
Side Profile
From the side, the Model Y looks tall with a rounded roofline. Flush door handles, aero-style alloy wheels and integrated cameras add to the functional design. The focus here is clearly on efficiency.
Rear Profile
The rear gets a connected tail lamp setup with an indirect reflective lighting effect. The charging port is integrated into the tail lamp itself. We found this layout to be simple, but with a unique touch.
Minimalism defines the Tesla Model Y’s cabin. The layout is built around a single central screen, giving it a clean, modern feel rather than traditional luxury. The material quality and fit is comparable to those of similarly priced German rivals.

Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard is a simple horizontal layout with a 15.4-inch touchscreen at the centre. Most functions, including mirrors, headlamps and the glovebox, are controlled through the screen. While this keeps the cabin uncluttered, it takes time to get used to. Materials are high quality, with soft-touch surfaces and premium upholstery throughout.
Seating Comfort
First Row
Front seats are wide, firm and supportive. Finding a comfortable driving position is easy with powered adjustments and an adjustable steering wheel. Steering adjustment via the touchscreen is not very intuitive.
Second Row
Rear seat space is generous. Even with a tall driver in front, there is usable knee room. The flat floor and wide bench can seat three, but it is more comfortable for two, while the glass roof adds to the airy feel.

Tesla has positioned the Model Y as a premium, tech-first offering in India. The base RWD variant keeps the entry price relatively accessible for a Tesla, but the higher variants quickly move into luxury territory, especially once you factor in options like Full Self Driving. Buyers should also note that most colour options come at an additional cost, which further pushes up the overall price.

Tesla Model Y Ex-Showroom Prices in India
| Variant | Battery Pack | Power | Ex-Showroom Price |
| RWD (Base Model) | 60 kWh | 235 bhp | Rs. 59.89 Lakh |
| RWD Full Self Driving | 60 kWh | 235 bhp | Rs. 65.89 Lakh |
| Long Range RWD | 75 kWh | 295–335 bhp | Rs. 67.89 Lakh |
| Long Range RWD Full Self Driving (Top Model) | 75 kWh | 295–335 bhp | Rs. 73.89 Lakh |
Buyers entering the premium EV segment prioritise range, especially given the current charging infrastructure. The Tesla Model Y delivers strong claimed figures along with consistent real-world performance that you can rely on daily.
Here’s what we found out in our tests:
- The Long Range variant offers better flexibility for highway drives.
- Real-world range remains consistent across mixed driving conditions.
- Regenerative braking improves efficiency, particularly in city use.
- CCS2 compatibility makes public charging more accessible.
The following table outlines the claimed range and our observed figures.

Observed Range During Testing
| RWD | 500 km | 400-450 km | 420-460 km |
| Variant | Claimed Range (WLTP) | Real-World City Range | Real-World Highway Range |
| Long Range RWD | 661 km | 480-520 km | 500-550 km |
The Tesla Model Y offers a strong suite of safety features with a focus on protection and prevention.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
It comes with seven airbags, including front, side and curtain units for all occupants. The structure feels solid and is built to handle impacts well. While the updated version is yet to be crash tested, the previous model scored a 5-star rating in Euro NCAP, Australian NCAP and NHTSA.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
The Model Y gets features like blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and lane departure avoidance. These systems continuously monitor the surroundings and assist the driver. A 360-degree camera also helps during tight manoeuvres.
Safety Verdict
The Tesla Model Y delivers a balanced safety package with strong build quality and advanced driver assistance systems. While an India-specific crash rating is pending, its global results and technology make it reassuring overall.
The Tesla Model Y takes a minimalist approach, with most functions controlled through a central screen.
Infotainment and Interface
- The dashboard is dominated by a 15.4-inch touchscreen that controls nearly all functions.
- The interface is smooth and highly responsive, similar to a tablet.
- It does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
- Tesla offers built-in apps like YouTube, Netflix and Twitch through Tesla Theatre.
- An eight-inch rear screen allows passengers to control media independently.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
- Most physical controls are removed, with functions like mirrors, steering and glovebox accessed via the screen.
- The layout looks clean, but takes time to get used to.
- The Model Y gets dual wireless chargers, multiple USB ports and a nine-speaker sound system.
- Front seats are powered, heated and ventilated, while rear seats get heating and electric recline.
- Ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control and rear AC vents improve comfort.
- The Model Y focuses strongly on practicality and storage.
- It offers 822 litres of boot space, with additional underfloor and side storage.
- Folding the 60:40 rear seats expands capacity to over 2130 litres.
- The loading area is wide, though height is slightly limited due to the raised floor.
- A 116-litre front trunk adds extra storage for smaller items.
As Bilal Firfiray puts it,
“The practicality is undeniable. This is a car that understands everyday usability.”
As we evaluated, the Model Y balances ease of driving with a slightly firm edge that prioritises control over outright comfort.
City Driving
Driving in the city feels natural from the start. After getting used to the drive modes on the screen, everything else is simple. The light steering makes it easy in traffic and tight spaces. The quiet EV experience keeps daily commutes smooth. The firm suspension is noticeable on broken roads. Bumps and rough patches are felt inside, but the car stays controlled without excess movement.
Highway Driving
On the highway, the Model Y feels stable and confidence-inspiring. It holds triple-digit speeds comfortably, with strong and instant acceleration when needed. The performance is smooth and consistent. The firm suspension works better here, keeping the car settled. Some movement is felt over undulations, especially at the rear, but the overall drive remains composed and predictable.
Bilal observes,
“The firm suspension trades comfort for confidence, and you feel that on every corner.”
Tesla has kept things simple with the Model Y lineup in India. We found that instead of multiple trims with feature differences, Tesla offers four variants that mainly differ in battery range and the optional Full Self Driving package.
- RWD: This is the base version with a 500 km claimed range and all core features included.
- RWD Full Self Driving: Adds the FSD hardware package, although its functionality isn’t active in India yet.
- Long Range RWD: Gets the larger 75 kWh battery, pushing the claimed range up to 661 km.
- Long Range RWD Full Self Driving: The top-spec version combines maximum range with the FSD package.
Take a look at what each Tesla Model Y variant offers:
Variant | Battery & Range | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
RWD | 60 kWh, 500 km, 295 bhp | Full feature set, rear-wheel drive | Entry luxury EV buyers |
RWD Full Self Driving | 60 kWh, 500 km, 295 bhp | Adds FSD hardware package | Tech enthusiasts willing to future-proof |
Long Range RWD | 75 kWh, 661 km, 295 bhp | Higher range, better long-distance usability | Frequent highway users |
Long Range RWD Full Self Driving | 75 kWh, 661 km, 295 bhp | Top-spec with max range + FSD hardware | Buyers wanting the most complete package |
The Essentials That You Don't Get
- No feature differentiation across variants
- Full self-driving functionality is not usable in India yet
- No all-wheel-drive (AWD) option is currently available
Deciding on the right Tesla Model Y variant mainly comes down to how much range you need and whether you want to spend extra on future-ready tech like Full Self Driving.
Best for Everyday Use: RWD
For most buyers, the RWD makes the most sense. The claimed 500 km range is enough for daily use and occasional highway trips. You still get the full Tesla experience without stretching your budget.
Best for Long Drives: Long Range RWD
If you drive long distances often, go for the Long Range RWD. The 661 km claimed range adds a useful buffer and makes highway drives more relaxed.
Best Tech Experience: Full Self Driving
If you want everything Tesla offers, consider Full Self Driving. The hardware feels future-ready, but its real-world use in India is still limited.
Best Value Overall: Long Range RWD
The Long Range RWD brings the right balance. You get more range, strong performance and the full feature set without going to the top end.

The premium electric SUV space in India is still changing, and the Tesla Model Y enters it as a tech-focused alternative to more traditional luxury EVs. We found that while Tesla leans heavily on minimalism and software-driven experience, its rivals focus more on familiar luxury and conventional usability. Take a look at how the Tesla Model Y compares against its key competitors.
Model | Battery Capacity | ARAI Range | Power | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
Tesla Model Y | 75 kWh | 500 – 661 km | 295 bhp | Rs. 59.89 – Rs. 73.89 Lakh |
BYD Sealion 7 | 82.56 kWh | 567 km | 308 – 523 bhp | Rs. 49.40 – Rs. 54.90 Lakh |
BMW iX1 | 66.4 kWh | 531 km | 204 bhp | Rs. 50.90 Lakh |
Which Electric SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Tesla Model Y if you prioritise technology, clean design and a different ownership experience over traditional luxury.
- Choose the BYD Sealion 7 if you want stronger performance and better value for money.
- Choose the BMW iX1 if you prefer a more familiar cabin layout with a conventional luxury feel.
Pros
- Clean, recognisable design with no excessive detailing
- Spacious cabin with excellent practicality
- Smooth and effortless performance
- Strong real-world usability with a dependable range
- Comprehensive technology package
Cons
- Over-reliance on touchscreens can be annoying
- A firm ride quality
- The rear seat is best suited for two
- Doesn’t deliver a traditional luxury feel
Verdict
The Tesla Model Y focuses on usability, technology, and simplicity rather than traditional ideas of luxury. It offers a spacious cabin, strong practicality, and an easy-to-drive nature that works well in everyday conditions. During our evaluation, we found the driving experience to be smooth and approachable, with performance that feels quick without being overwhelming.
There are a few areas that take getting used to. The complete reliance on the touchscreen changes how you interact with the car, and the firm suspension affects comfort on uneven roads. Pricing also plays a big role in how the Model Y is perceived in India.
Bilal Firfiray concludes,
“This isn’t difficult to use. It’s just different enough to slow you down at first.”
