Yamaha YZF R15 Expert Reviews

Yamaha YZF R15 car&bike Expert Take

If you’re looking at the Yamaha YZF R15, chances are you’re not searching for a relaxed commuter. You want something sharper. Something that feels like a proper supersport, just in a smaller package. And that’s exactly what this motorcycle delivers. From the riding posture to the way it revs, everything about it screams track intent. It doesn’t try to be soft or forgiving — it wants you involved.
In a segment where many bikes balance comfort and practicality, the R15 stays committed to performance. It brings serious tech to the 150–160 cc class — traction control, quickshifter (on select variants), and that high-revving VVA engine that loves being pushed. As Preetam Bora puts it, “It's easily the most focused supersport in its segment.”
This isn’t built to commute quietly. It’s built to corner hard.

Expert Context

Preetam Bora has spent over ten years riding and testing motorcycles across India and abroad, clocking more than 400,000 kilometres in the saddle. That kind of seat time changes how you look at a machine. You stop chasing spec sheets and start feeling feedback — throttle response in traffic, brake bite in panic stops, stability at speed. That’s exactly how we approached the Yamaha YZF R15.
We didn’t take it straight to a racetrack. Instead, we rode it where you and I would. Through Delhi NCR traffic jams, fast highway runs, and twisty sections that actually test handling and balance. Crawling city congestion showed us how committed the posture feels. Open highway stretches let the engine stretch its legs. Tight corners revealed just how planted the front end is.
You can explore the full specs and variants on the Yamaha YZF R15 product page, but numbers only tell part of the story.
We tested it where riders actually live, not just where they race.

The Yamaha YZF R15 V4 isn’t just another 150 cc motorcycle with sporty styling. It’s built with proper supersport intent. At its heart sits a 155 cc liquid-cooled engine that produces 18.4 PS (around 18.1 bhp), and you can feel that energy the moment you open the throttle. What makes it special is the VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) tech, which helps the engine stay strong at both low and high revs. Ride it gently in traffic and it behaves. Push it hard, and it wakes up.

Here’s what defines the Yamaha YZF R15 2025 package:

  • 155 cc liquid-cooled engine
  • 18.4 PS / ~18.1 bhp output
  • VVA for stronger top-end
  • Traction control system
  • Quickshifter on top variant
  • Clear supersport positioning

Add traction control and a quickshifter on higher trims, and you’re looking at serious tech for this class. You can check full specs and variants on the official Yamaha YZF R15 product page.

As Preetam Bora says, The R15 always feels eager when you push it.”

Still the closest thing to a baby R1 you can buy.

The R15 lineup might look wide at first glance, but once we break it down, it’s actually simple. Yamaha hasn’t played around with engine differences here. Every version runs the same 155 cc motor with identical core performance. What changes is the equipment, features, and how aggressive the bike looks when you park it.

Yamaha YZF R15 Metallic Red (Base Model)

This is the entry point — clearly the Yamaha YZF R15 base model. You get the standard Metallic Red colour, LCD cluster, dual-channel ABS, and the same strong engine. What you don’t get is the quickshifter. If you want pure R15 performance at the most accessible price, this is where you start.

Yamaha YZF R15 V4 Dark Knight

The Dark Knight adds a premium blacked-out colourway. Mechanically, it’s identical. Same engine, same chassis, same output. The difference is visual presence.

Yamaha YZF R15 Racing Blue / MotoGP Edition

These versions bring sportier graphics and race-inspired styling. Underneath, everything stays the same. It’s about identity, not added speed.

Yamaha YZF R15 M (Top Model)

This is the fully loaded Yamaha YZF R15 top model. You get the quickshifter, traction control, and premium badging. It feels more special, but the performance output remains unchanged.

Across the range:

  • Same 155 cc engine
  • Same core performance
  • Differences lie in features and cosmetics
  • Tight pricing band

Your choice depends on tech, not speed.

The moment we roll the R15 out into the open, it doesn’t look like a small-capacity bike. It looks serious. The proportions are tight, the stance is forward-leaning, and the overall design screams track intent. Up front, the twin LED headlamp setup gives it a sharp, focused face. The aerodynamic fairing flows cleanly into the tank, making it feel like one solid piece rather than separate panels. Even when parked, it feels ready to attack the next corner.

Here’s what defines its presence:

  • Twin LED headlamp with sharp DRLs
  • Aerodynamic full fairing design
  • Low clip-on handlebars
  • Muscular sculpted fuel tank
  • R1-inspired tail section

Swing a leg over and the clip-on bars instantly remind you this is no commuter. The muscular tank allows you to tuck in properly, and the slim, R1-inspired tail keeps things aggressive from every angle. As Preetam Bora says, It looks like a proper supersport.” And he’s absolutely right.

It chooses aggression over subtlety — and that’s exactly why it stands out.

Technical Specifications

Before we talk about how it feels at full throttle, let’s quickly look at what the Yamaha YZF R15 is working with on paper. The numbers tell you a lot about why this motorcycle feels sharper than most bikes in this class.

SpecificationsDetails
Engine155 cc liquid-cooled
Power18.1 bhp
Torque14.2 Nm
GearboxSix-speed
Kerb Weight141 kg
Tank11-litre

Now here’s where it gets interesting. With around 18.1 bhp pushing just about 141 kg, the R15 has a strong power-to-weight ratio for a 155 cc motorcycle. That balance is what makes it feel lively when you accelerate, eager when you rev it out, and responsive when you’re exiting a corner. It doesn’t feel heavy or sluggish. Instead, it feels tight, focused, and ready to respond every time you twist the throttle.

Rider Ergonomics

The moment you swing a leg over the R15, you know this isn’t a relaxed commuter. The riding posture is committed and purposeful. The low clip-on bars pull you forward, and the rear-set footpegs tuck your legs into a sporty stance. It instantly feels like a machine built for cornering, not cruising. In city traffic, that forward lean reminds you that this bike wants to be ridden with intent. On open roads, though, the posture makes perfect sense.

Here’s what defines the riding position:

  • Committed, forward-leaning posture
  • Low clip-on handlebars
  • Rear-set footpegs
  • Clear digital instrument cluster

The digital cluster is easy to read and packed with information, adding to the modern feel.

Rear Seat Reality

To be honest, the pillion seat is small. The footpegs sit high, and comfort is limited to short city hops. This isn’t designed for long two-up rides.

Clear stance? Built for solo riding.

Start in the city and the R15 feels calm, almost disciplined. The throttle response is clean, and the engine doesn’t feel jerky in traffic. But the moment you open it up, you realise this bike is hiding something. Get onto the highway, drop a gear, and let the engine rev reveals a complete shift in personality. The VVA system kicks in higher up the rev range, and you can feel the surge build strongly toward the top end.

Here’s what defines its performance character:

  • Strong, exciting top-end pull
  • Noticeable VVA transition
  • Slick six-speed gearbox feel
  • Engaging high-rpm character
  • Smooth traction control intervention

Through twisty sections, the engine feels alive. Hold it near redline and it rewards you with that addictive rush. As Preetam Bora says, The top-end pull is addictive.” And he’s absolutely right. The gearbox feels precise, encouraging you to shift quickly and stay in the powerband. Traction control works quietly in the background, stepping in smoothly without cutting the fun.

0–100 kmph

VariantTime
Yamaha YZF R1510.74 seconds

For a 155 cc motorcycle, that’s genuinely strong. It’s not about brute force — it’s about controlled, high-revving excitement.

Pros

  • Razor-sharp cornering feel
  • Segment-leading electronic aids
  • Explosive top-end pull
  • Track-ready Deltabox chassis
  • Proper supersport road presence

Cons

  • Aggressive posture tires the wrists
  • Tiny pillion seat space
  • Noticeable heat in traffic
  • Expensive for 155 cc
  • Uncomfortable for long tours

Verdict

In this Yamaha YZF R15 Expert review, one thing is clear — the Yamaha YZF R15 is not trying to be everything for everyone. It has one clear mission: deliver a true supersport experience in an accessible package. The riding posture, the sharp chassis, the high-revving engine — everything points in one direction. As Preetam Bora says, “If you want a proper supersport feel without stepping into 300 cc territory, this is it.” We agree. This is the most focused supersport entry you can buy today.

This is not a motorcycle you buy for comfort. You buy it because you want to ride hard.
