With the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol motor, Tata has fixed its biggest shortcoming and made the Harrier accessible to a much wider audience now. Its suspension feels robust as ever, the massive rear-seat space is segment-leading, and the five-star rating means it can handle most of whatever challenging Indian road conditions throw at it. The distracting HVAC controls and inconsistent service standards at service centers can bother some,but for the most part, the Harrier’s toughness and loaded tech kit will overshadow everything else.

The latest model has the added benefit of accessibility with the 4x2 diesel automatic and revised prices. That change alone makes the Compass easier to think about than it was.

If your priority is the most space or the most advanced electronic systems, rivals may be appropriate for you.
