Honda CBR650R Deliveries Begin In India

  • What's New?

Honda's premium Big Wing Top line shops will sell the 2021 CBR650R motorbike in India as a completely knocked-down kit (CKD). Honda is launching the CB650R, a neo sports cafe racer, for the first time in India. The CB650R is based on the same architecture as the CBR650R, and both motorcycles are powered by the same 649cc in-line four-cylinder engine that produces 86 bhp @ 12,000 rpm and 57.5 Nm torque @ 8,500 rpm. The bikes are equipped with a 6-speed transmission with a slip-and-assist clutch.

In India, the Honda CBR 650R is a sports bike with a starting price of Rs. 8, 88, 220. It comes in only one colour and one variation. The Honda CBR 650R is powered by a 648.72cc BS6 engine that produces 85.82 bhp and 57.5 Nm of torque. The Honda CBR 650R features anti-lock brakes on both the front and rear disc brakes. The gasoline tank on this CBR650R is 15.4 litres and weighs 211 kg.

Mechanical changes have been made to the Honda CBR650R in order to comply with the new, more rigorous emission regulations. The BS6-compliant variant, which will compete with the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Ninja ZX-6R, is significantly more expensive than its predecessor.

The motorbike has a twin-pod headlamp, a transparent windscreen, a complete fairing, a split-style seat, and a small exhaust canister, all of which are influenced by the CBR1000RR. While the design of the 2021 Honda CBR650R is identical to that of the 2020 model, the headlamp has a sharp new reflector shape. New side panels, steel rear mudguard/number plate mount clip-on handlebars, and rear set foot pegs are also included in the latest version of the middleweight motorbike.

The CBR650R BS6's feature list is identical to that of the 2020 model, including all-LED lighting, a digital LCD instrument cluster, and an assist and slipper clutch. Dual-channel ABS, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Honda Ignition Security System (HISS), and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) technology are among the motorcycle's safety features.

car&bike Expert Take

“The Honda CBR650R remains true to its identity as an everyday superbike. Its greatest strength is its refined inline-four engine, which has smooth low-end performance and a stout top-end rush. The addition of the E-Clutch makes it better for city usability; however, the high price and limited electronics may not be for those looking for outright value or advanced electronics.”

Honda CBR650R Overview

The Honda CBR650R is a continuation of a legacy that started in 2018 when it was introduced as a successor to the CBR650F, and it brings a sharper look and a more focused riding experience to the middleweight category. In India, it made its debut in 2019. Since then, it has been undergoing key updates with the recent 2025 model introducing Honda's new E-Clutch technology.

Despite its aggressive styling inspired by the Fireblade, it had always been marketed as an "everyday superbike" as opposed to a hardcore track machine. Now in its latest iteration, the CBR650R takes the signature inline-four engine and adds some fresh usability and modern features such as a TFT display and smartphone connectivity. It is a rival to motorcycles like the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Triumph Daytona 660.

After riding the CBR650R in city traffic as well as highways, it is clear that Honda has been working to improve what the bike has always done best, providing a smooth, high-revving and inline-four riding experience that's usable every day. Sameer Contractor rode the motorcycle quite a lot, and his experiences from the review are reflected throughout this evaluation.

City Riding Experience

In city traffic, we found that the CBR650R feels manageable despite its size. The throttle response is smooth, and the engine is tractable below 4,000 rpm and easy to ride without having to downshift often. Acceleration feels restful at low speeds, as required in traffic conditions.

The E-Clutch makes a noticeable difference here. It allows clutchless starts, stops, and shifts, reducing effort in stop-and-go riding. The gearbox remains smooth, and overall, the bike feels easier to ride than expected for a middleweight.

Highway Riding Experience

On the highway, we discovered that the CBR650R cruises very comfortably at 110 to 130 kmph. Engines feel relaxed driving in this range with sufficient performance for quick overtaking without much of an effort. Long rides are possible, but there may be some vibration (around 6,000-7,000 rpm).

Pros

  • Refined inline-four engine with distinctive exhaust note
  • E-Clutch system reduces fatigue and allows clutchless shifts
  • Stable and confidence-inspiring handling
  • Premium build quality with excellent fit and finish

Cons

  • High price compared to key rivals in the segment
  • Lacks advanced IMU-based electronics like cornering ABS
  • Noticeable high-frequency vibrations at highway speeds
  • The pillion seat is small and not suited for long rides

Verdict

The Honda CBR650R positions itself as a balanced middleweight sportbike that prioritises refinement and usability over outright aggression. It is not a track-focused supersport, but a machine designed to deliver performance in a way that remains manageable in daily riding conditions.

In our evaluation, the 649 cc inline-four engine felt smooth and predictable at low speeds, while building strong, linear performance as revs climbed past the mid-range. The E-Clutch system stood out in traffic, removing the need for constant clutch use and making stop-and-go riding significantly easier. The chassis and Showa suspension setup offered a stable, planted feel on highways while remaining manageable in city conditions.

As Sameer summarised,

“CBR650R has a proven track of infusing excitement to the riding experience of both new as well as seasoned riders”

Honda CBR650R Alternatives

Honda CBR650R FAQs

Strict pollution regulations have harmed the bike's performance. While the 649cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine is the same, it has been detuned to produce 87 bhp at 12000 rpm and 57.5 Nm at 8500 rpm,. It is 3kg heavier than the international model, weighing 211kg kerb. Expect the bike's power-to-weight ratio to suffer as a result of the extra weight. Aside from that, the CBR650R for 2021 is unaltered.
