car&bike Expert Take

“The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is best suited to urban buyers who prefer practicality, easy drivability and low running cost over all else. It is not directed at those looking for premium interiors or high-speed stability. But its biggest strength is that it’s one of the most space-efficient and economical city hatchbacks in its price range.”

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Overview

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been a familiar name on Indian roads since its debut in 1999 in the 'tall-boy' hatchback segment, and it has sold about 34.1 lakh units as of June 2025. Its current third-generation avatar was launched in 2019, which was further updated with cleaner engines (BS6-compliant petrol variants and S-CNG variant) in 2022. Today, the 'Big New Wagon R' is built on the HEARTECT platform after its latest update in 2025, an identity it shares with its other siblings: the Swift, Ignis, and Ciaz.
This review of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been compiled from extensive road testing by our car&bike team as seen in our YouTube video. The 2019 iteration of this car was tested by Siddharth Vinayak Patankar for both manual and automatic variants. Siddharth also wrote a comparison review between the Wagon R and the Hyundai Santro to evaluate the former’s overall performance.
Positioned as a purely functional city car, the currently available Maruti Suzuki Wagon R sits above the Alto K10 and S-Presso, but below the Swift in the brand’s hierarchy. But despite any compromises, it remains an unapologetic practical haulier for the Indian market, consistently ranking among the top five best-selling cars in India.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R delivers an enjoyable ride quality thanks to its low curb weight and peppy K-series engines.

Engine Options Tested

EnginePowerTorque
1.0-litre K10C Petrol66 bhp89 Nm
1.2-litre K12N Petrol89 bhp113 Nm
1.0-litre CNG56 bhp82.1 Nm

Driving Experience: Real World

Our road tests were conducted in Udaipur to gauge how the tall-boy handles different environments. We found that the car’s light steering and tight turning radius of 4.7 metres make it easy to park and traverse tight lanes. However, the suspension is a bit soft, so body roll and vertical movements are possible when tackling corners at high speeds.

1.0-litre K10C Petrol

This entry-level 1.0-litre Dual Jet engine has three cylinders. In city traffic, it feels enough to drive, as it offers decent low-end grunt for bumper-to-bumper commutes. But when pushed hard on the highway, the engine struggles to go past 100 kmph. This can make overtaking challenging.
According to Siddharth,
“This engine benefits from the lighter HEARTECT platform and has been retuned for better fuel efficiency.”

1.2-litre K12N Petrol

The 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is the best among the three variants and has been exclusively tested by Siddharth in Udaipur. Its refinement levels are much higher than the base variant, and in our testing, it did not choke at 100 kmph. The extra torque (113 Nm) also meant fewer gear changes were required in the city. As a highway tourer, this is the most appropriate choice.

1.0-litre CNG

Maruti Suzuki’s CNG option delivers lower power of 56 bhp, but it is still enough to propel the car without any disturbance. On inclines, it may feel sluggish, but on flat roads, the performance deficit can be ignored in favour of far better running costs.

Transmission: AGS (AMT) vs Manual

A five-speed manual gearbox is available for all three variants of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. The typical AGS (Auto Gear Shift) from Maruti has improved a lot in recent years, but the ‘head-nod’ during aggressive shifts is still noticeable. Do note that AGS is only available on 1-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines on VXI, ZXI and ZXI+ trims.

Siddharth notices,

“The AMT has become significantly smoother, though it still exhibits slight hesitation when switching quickly between Reverse and Drive. It’s also an urban family car. It’s not trying to be anything else. It is faster than before; it tops 90 kmph pretty quickly on the highway, but after that, it’s a tedious increase to 100 kmph. Then, it struggles to go above 120 kmph in the 1.0-litre trim.”

Regarding the updated look, Siddharth notes,
“While some critics still compare its 'tallboy' silhouette to a 'bread box,' it is a massive departure from the previous generation. The wider track allowed designers to add sculpting to the metal, particularly around the shoulders and wheel arches.”

The front of the car has a modern grille with a chrome bar on higher variants, and large swept-back headlamps that make the car feel wider than it actually is. The side profile retains the floating roof achieved with a blacked-out C-pillar. We noticed that the fourteen-inch wheels look undersized for the tall body. As for the rear, it has massive vertical taillamps extending up to the roof. Unlike the Renault Kwid or the Tata Punch, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R does not try to look like an SUV; it is an MPV-shaped hatchback, and is designed like one.
According to Siddharth,

“If you’re comparing it to a Corvette, then yes, you’ll be disappointed. But compare it to the previous Wagon R. I mean, have you ever seen 'good looks' and 'Wagon R' in the same sentence? It just doesn’t happen.”

Tata Tiago vs Maruti Suzuki Wagon R vs Citroen C3 Dimensions

Width1,620 mm1,677 mm1,733 mm
Height1,675 mm1,535 mm1,604 mm
Wheelbase2,435 mm2,400 mm2,540 mm
Ground Clearance165 mm170 mm180 mm

Two of its closest rivals, the Tata Tiago and the Citroen C3, are much longer and wider cars, which makes the Wagon R a much more practical option in congested cities.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R’s exterior elements have managed to modernise the ‘tall-boy’ template without losing its core identity.

Front Profile

The Wagon R’s front end is now more architectural than utilitarian. Earlier, there was a boxy bonnet here. Now, it has been replaced by a more sculpted unit that sits higher, giving the driver a commanding view of the road. The grille design has a cross-mesh pattern, while the headlamps are large, dual-split units.

Side Profile

We notice that the sheer height of 1,675 mm makes it a taller option than several compact SUVs. To mask the slab-sided look, Maruti has also introduced a "floating roof" effect with a blacked-out C-pillar, which visually lowers the roofline. The wheel arches are more pronounced as well, but the wheel sizes remain a point of contention. The lower variants ride on thirteen-inch steel wheels, which look undersized, while the top-end variants get fourteen-inch alloys (painted black in the ZXi+ trim) that fill the arches better but still leave a gap, hinting at the suspension travel tuned for bad roads.
According to Siddharth,
“The wheels appear a bit small for the body size; larger wheels and a thicker rear overhang would have further improved the proportions.”

Rear Profile

The vertical taillamps are massive; they start from the bumper and extend all the way to the roof rail level, a design similar to Volvo’s offerings, albeit executed on a budget. The tailgate is also nearly flat and vertical, but this has been done intentionally to maximise the 341-litre boot space. And finally, a thick chrome plate with ‘WAGON R’ embossing sits above the number plate housing on higher trims.

The cabin feels huge, and fused with the dual-tone "Premium Beige and Dark Grey" theme, it helps reduce the claustrophobia of small cars.

Cabin Layout and Quality

The centre console has the ‘SmartPlay Studio’ infotainment system (on VXi and above), surrounded by vertical AC vents. The compromise to material quality is evident; to our touch, the plastics are hard, scratchy, and built for durability rather than tactile pleasure. However, the fit and finish are consistent, with no uneven panel gaps.

Seating Comfort

Front Row

The front seats are tall, allowing occupants to "walk in" rather than crawl into the car. This makes the vehicle a popular choice among elderly buyers. All the seats are flat with limited bolstering; good enough for commuting, but less helpful during cornering. Another cost-cutting measure seen inside the car is the fixed headrests that taller drivers might find annoying.

Second Row

In our review, we noticed the rear doors open nearly 90 degrees, making access effortless. The floor is almost flat, too, which makes the middle passenger feel more welcome than in most rivals. However, we also noticed that the seat bench is flat and lacks under-thigh support for tall passengers on long journeys.

According to Siddharth,
“Exceptional legroom and headroom make it stand out.”

Features That Improve Daily Use

Maruti has given some practical features to the Wagon R instead of chasing brochure headlines.

  • SmartPlay Studio: This seven-inch touchscreen is responsive and supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • Digilogs: The instrument cluster is a semi-digital unit that provides all the necessary data from fuel efficiency to the distance-to-empty meter.
  • Practical Storage: The door pockets can hold 1-litre bottles, and there is a usable shelf above the glovebox for phones or wallets.
  • Steering Controls: Audio and call controls are available on the steering wheel, keeping the driver focused on driving.

Pros

  • Tall stance and wide-opening doors
  • Tall passengers have surplus headroom
  • Refined engine for city traffic
  • Exceptional mileage from the CNG version
  • Very good resale value

Cons

  • 1-star rating from Global NCAP
  • Noticeable body roll when cornering at speed
  • The rear bench is flat with no contouring
  • No reverse parking camera or adjustable headrests
  • Plastic build quality of the interior

Verdict

To date, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R remains the most functional hatchback for an Indian family. It is not a driver’s car or a luxury statement; instead, it is a practical tool for transportation, and Maruti Suzuki has built it that way. The 1.2-litre engine also refines what was missing in previous generations, making it the go-to city car that can also handle occasional highway sprints. However, the safety aspect cannot be ignored either, as the 1-star Global NCAP rating is quite poor in an era where consumers are becoming increasingly safety-conscious.
Siddharth concludes,
“It remains a purpose-built, practical urban car, but now with added panache and modern tech. By offering two engine choices and an AMT option from the launch, Maruti has set a new benchmark for the segment.”

Overall, if you prioritise highway driving, there are better options in the Indian market. But if you want a spacious, reliable, and highly efficient city car, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is the pragmatic king.

Wagon R is perfect for short city trips, but not the best for long journeys. The seats aren't the most comfortable, and the engine could use a bit more power for better performance.

While the Wagon R is easy to drive and maintain, I find the interior design quite basic and lacking in modern features. It does the job but doesn't feel exciting. The Wagon R is economical and offers good visibility, but the engine noise is quite noticeable, especially at higher speeds. It’s fine for city use but could be more refined.

I've been using the Wagon R for a few months, wagon R ka boot space kaafi accha hai, aur seats bhi comfortable hain. Mileage bhi 20 kmpl ke aaspas deta hai, jo ki kaafi impressive hai. and while it's very practical and spacious, the build quality could be better. Some of the interior materials feel a bit cheap.

Wagon R ki performance city ke liye theek hai, but highway pe lagta hai ki power aur stability dono ki kami hai. The design of this car is very plain; it doesn’t look attractive at all. The interiors also feel a bit outdated
