The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R price bracket targets different buyers, from budget-conscious owners to small families looking for a city car. While it is a bit pricier than most of its competitors, such as the Tata Tiago or the Renault Kwid, its spaciousness and more powerful engines in this price bracket make it an attractive choice. Starting at Rs. 4.99 Lakh, the Wagon R is priced higher than other options in the market, like the S-Presso and the Celerio from the same brand.

The primary factor that has made the Wagon R such a huge success in the Indian market has always been efficiency. Moreover, the current generation is carrying on the tradition by using the Dual Jet, Dual VVT technology of Maruti Suzuki that has idle start-stop features in the entire petrol range.

Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing

In actual testing conditions, we discovered that the 1.0-litre AMT version is efficient in stop-start city traffic conditions, and is sometimes as efficient as the manual version. Nonetheless, aggressive highway driving will lead to the use of more fuel, particularly in the smaller engine, which has to strain itself to reach triple-digit speeds. The Wagon R’s safety has been questioned for years by automotive enthusiasts, but the new 2025 model changes this by bringing several improvements to the equipment list.

Passive Safety and Crash Protection

All variants now have six airbags, and this update has improved passenger protection compared to the previous dual-airbag models. The front, side, and curtain inflatables located inside the car now help in reducing injury risks during an accident.
But, when tested by Global NCAP back in 2023, the Wagon R received a rating of one star for adult occupant protection (19.69 out of 34 points) and a zero-star rating for child occupant protection. This rating implies that the stability of the cabin in case of severe impacts is still in question. For example, in the case of a collision, there is minimal protection for the chest and head in certain cases. Also, rival vehicles such as the Tata Tiago have superior structural integrity when compared to the Wagon R.

Active Safety and Stability Systems in Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

In the active safety suite segment, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R covers the basics. The car offers Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard, a feature that prevents skidding on slippery surfaces or during sudden manoeuvres. Additionally, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) are useful for braking too. For the AMT variants, there is a Hill Hold Assist feature to help the car stay stable on slopes. Other standard features included are rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminders for all seats, and speed-sensitive auto door locks.

Safety Verdict

According to our analysis, the Wagon R has become a safer vehicle with the standardisation of six airbags and ESP. But the one-star Global NCAP rating still leaves room for doubt, indicating that while it has the features to mitigate injuries, its structural crashworthiness may not rival that of competitors like the Tiago. 

Technology in the Wagon R is purely functional. There are no flashy digital driver displays or sunroofs here; instead, the focus is on robust, easy-to-use systems that help the daily commuter.

Infotainment and Interface

The centrepiece of the dashboard is the seven-inch SmartPlay Studio infotainment system. During our review, we found the interface to be vibrant and responsive, with no noticeable lag. It supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing seamless navigation and music streaming.
The audio system, meanwhile, has four speakers; all four of them offer decent sound quality for the segment, though audiophiles will find the bass lacking. Steering-mounted audio and voice controls add a layer of convenience, allowing the driver to manage calls and music without taking their hands off the wheel.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech

The cabin has many practical features, from the remote keyless entry system to the electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs. The instrument cluster, while not fully digital, features a clear multi-information display that provides readouts to help drivers maximise mileage. However, even in 2026, the car lacks a reverse parking camera.
 

People also prefer the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R over entry-level hatchbacks like the Alto or S-Presso for its adequate boot space. Its tall-boy stance allows for a deep and vertical luggage area that is surprisingly accommodating.

In real-world use, the 341-litre boot is segment-leading and can easily fit two medium-sized suitcases along with a couple of soft bags. The wide boot opening and relatively low loading lip also make it easy for the owner to slide heavy items in without lifting them too high. This versatility is further complemented by the 60:40 split-folding rear seats (available on VXi trims and above), which allow owners to carry longer objects while still seating a third passenger. However, for CNG buyers, the spare wheel and cylinder eat up most of the usable floor space, leaving room only for small soft bags or a laptop backpack.

City Driving

This is the Wagon R's natural habitat. In our review, we found out that the high seating position offers excellent visibility, allowing the driver to spot potholes and gaps in traffic with ease. The steering is also extremely light at low speeds, which, combined with a tight turning radius of 4.7 metres, makes parking in tight spots or taking U-turns effortless. The soft suspension, meanwhile, absorbs low-speed bumps and undulations competently, isolating occupants from the harshness of broken city roads. This is a car built for daily commutes to the office.

Highway Driving

We noticed in our ride review that the same soft suspension, which helps in seamless city riding, now bounces at triple-digit speeds. Due to its boxy, tall design, the car is also vulnerable to crosswinds; you will feel a tug when overtaking large trucks or driving on exposed flyovers. As for the steering, it lacks the reassuring feedback found in the Tata Tiago or the Swift. Its best performance is between 80 and 90 kmph, where the 1.2-litre engine feels relaxed, and the chassis remains composed.
According to Siddharth,

“While faster than before, it isn't a 'highway monster.' It reaches 90 km/h quickly, but acceleration becomes tedious beyond 100 km/h, topping out around 120 km/h.”

Best for Budget & City Use: 1.0-Litre VXi

If you only want to drive the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R inside the city, the 1.0-litre VXi variant makes sense. It has all the basics: power windows, remote entry, and a music system without the price tag of its larger sibling.

Best for Mixed Usage & Highway: 1.2-Litre ZXi / ZXi+

For highway cruising, the 1.2-litre engine is the non-negotiable choice. The ZXi also offers a good balance compared to the base variant, but if you want the touchscreen and alloy wheels, the more pricier ZXi+ is the one to pick.

Best for High Mileage Runners: 1.0-Litre LXi / VXi CNG

For commercial users or those with daily running exceeding 50 km, the CNG variants are the most suitable to purchase. With figures touching over 30 km/kg, this is the most budget-friendly choice over the long run.

While the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R dominates its rivals in terms of vertical space and practicality, others offer better driving dynamics, safety, or distinct styling. Its primary challengers are the Tata Tiago, the Citroen C3, and Maruti’s own Celerio.
The Tata Tiago is the most direct alternative, offering superior build quality and a four-star Global NCAP safety rating, which highlights the Wagon R’s structural deficiencies.
