car&bike Expert Take
“The MG Gloster is for buyers who do not want to give up on dominating road presence and advanced tech. This vehicle takes up a lot of real estate on the road and offers a very plush ride for long-distance cruising. We consider it a strong alternative to the other established ladder-frame rivals.”

The MG Gloster arrived as the brand's flagship for India in 2020, and was the fourth model launched after the Hector, ZS EV, and Hector Plus. It immediately made waves within the automotive community with its size and road presence, and being almost five metres in length, nearly two metres wide, and two metres tall, this vehicle was nothing short of a genuinely full-size SUV with a gigantic footprint. Moreover, to pull buyers away from the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour, MG particularly doubled down on the Gloster's expansive feature list and luxurious cabin.

Recently, the Gloster’s current lineup welcomed the Blackstorm edition. Still, things will tone down a bit for this vehicle in the future as JSW MG Motor India has decided to phase out its production by replacing it with the MG Majestor. Nevertheless, it’s still a premium vehicle with high levels of comfort, a competent technology suite, and a wheelbase of three metres, atop which sits a third, spacious row.
Kingshuk Dutta had checked out the Gloster’s Blackstorm entry in the Indian market, and he also wrote a review about its performance and features. We have added his insights here to give you a first-hand experience of the car.
Powering this massive SUV requires a serious engine, and MG has equipped the Gloster with a potent diesel unit that gives two different tuned setups. It prioritises a refined delivery over sudden surges of power.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 2.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Diesel | 159–161 bhp, 212–215 bhp | 373–375 Nm, 478–480 Nm | Eight-speed automatic | Four-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
The Gloster has always given thought to cruising speeds rather than outright pace. Its mass means you get a relaxed driving style, but it does not feel out of breath if you push it towards the red line either.
City Driving
For a car that is comfortably over two tonnes in weight, the 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine does a good job of offering solid pulling power right from 1,700 rpm. Dealing with city traffic is surprisingly fuss-free. You get a hint of turbo lag at the lower range, but it does not disturb your driving experience. The eight-speed automatic gearbox has well-spaced ratios, too.
According to Kingshuk,
“The Gloster offers a very refined driving experience. There is hardly any engine noise seeping into the cabin.”
Highway Driving
On highways, the SUV builds up speed nicely and settles into a long-legged cruise. The view out of the windscreen is commanding, giving you that proper high-riding feel. However, the steering feels absolutely dead and lacks feedback, so it requires some correction at high speeds. Meanwhile, changing the driving mode to ‘Sport’ slightly firms up the suspension or weighs up the steering, keeping the ride predictably soft.

Off-Road Driving
When the tarmac ends, the BorgWarner four-by-four system steps in. You get seven terrain modes, including Auto, Eco, Rock, Snow, Sand, Mud, and Sport. The driving characteristics do not shift massively between them, but the drivetrain adapts enough to help the big MG crawl over bumps and ruts with reasonable sure-footedness.
The Gloster's footprint is undeniably vast. It has a slightly conservative, boxy silhouette instead of the sharper creases we find nowadays on some modern crossovers.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | MG Gloster | Toyota Fortuner | Ford Endeavour |
| Length | 4,985 mm | 4,795 mm | 4,903 mm |
| Width | 1,926 mm | 1,855 mm | 1,869 mm |
| Height | 1,867 mm | 1,835 mm | 1,837 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,950 mm | 2,745 mm | 2,850 mm |
In terms of sheer dimensions the Gloster is the biggest among all the rivals measuring almost five-metres in length with a wheelbase of nearly three-metres.

From the outside, the Gloster wears its size with pride, showing off its large doors and windows. It won't fail to remind you of all those big American SUVs.
Front Profile
- The bold look is mainly brought to life by a big three-slat octagonal grille up front.
- The headlight cluster is slim, sitting above fog lamps with a sharp-looking chrome housing.
- On the Blackstorm edition, the entire grille is blacked out, complemented by sharp red accents on the front bumper and LED headlight internals.
Side Profile
- Viewed in profile, the SUV has a boxy silhouette.
- The model features 'Brit Dynamic' badging on the fenders.
- The 19-inch alloy wheels feel decently designed, but slightly larger 20 or 21-inch units could have filled up the wheel well better.
- The Blackstorm version adds sharp red brake calipers that pop beautifully against the black alloy wheels.
Rear Profile
- Your attention goes directly to the bold 'Gloster' lettering and the quad exhaust tips.
- In the Blackstorm model, even the rear lettering is finished in black.
- You will find sharp red accents on the rear bumpers to match the sinister dark look.

Once you step inside the cabin, you will feel how the Gloster genuinely impresses with its upmarket feel. It is a premium space loaded to the brim with essential features.
Cabin Layout and Quality
We couldn't help but notice that the dashboard's clean design, rotary knob, and climate controls give off a very BMW-like vibe. Materials used throughout give a premium feel, though a few plasticky bits, like the wireless charging tray lid, could have had a better finish. The Blackstorm continues the all-black treatment with dark-themed leatherette upholstery. The standard variants get rich tan leather upholstery and a yacht-style gear knob.

Seating Comfort
The long wheelbase translates into a highly practical interior for all occupants. Space is genuinely impressive across the cabin.
Front Row
The front seats are electrically adjustable and ventilated in the newer trims, providing excellent long-distance comfort. You get heated seats too, which are electrically adjustable. The seating position is commanding, making it easy to see over the large hood.
Second Row
The Gloster gets plush captain seats in the middle, meaning it can seat six people in total in this configuration. These seats keep the occupants in serious comfort, with excellent headroom and knee-room for long highway trips.
Third Row
The third-row seats have enough space and headroom for medium-sized adults. While the knee room could be better, we aren't complaining. It is well-suited for short intra-city rides, though occupants at the very back might find the ride to be a little bouncy over uneven terrain.
Features That Improve Daily Use
- 12.3-inch touchscreen panel with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Eight-inch digital instrument console with analogue counters
- Dual panoramic sunroof
- Three-zone climate control and an air purifier
- 64-colour ambient lighting
The MG Gloster offers a significant value proposition given its footprint and extensive kit list. It gives buyers a lot of value for their money. Prices for this imposing SUV begin at Rs. 38.33 lakh and cross Rs. 43 lakh with the Blackstorm variant. But interestingly, within each variant, the six and seven-seater offerings are priced more or less the same.

Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
| Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Sharp 4x2 7Str | 2.0-Litre Diesel, Automatic | Rs. 38.33 Lakh |
| Savvy 4x2 6Str/7Str | 2.0-Litre Diesel, Automatic | Rs. 39.80 Lakh |
| Blackstorm 4x2 6Str/7Str | 2.0-Litre Diesel, Automatic | Rs. 40.46 Lakh |
| Savvy 4x4 6Str/7Str | 2.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Diesel, Automatic | Rs. 42.49 Lakh |
| Blackstorm 4x4 6Str/7Str | 2.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Diesel, Automatic | Rs. 43.16 Lakh |
Given its heavy, ladder-frame-rivalling dimensions and powerful engine options, the Gloster is relatively thirsty in stop-start traffic. It shines much better on the open road.
The tall gearing of the eight-speed automatic allows it to cruise efficiently on the highway. While you will not see frugal numbers in the city, the open road figures are still acceptable for a massive four-wheel-drive SUV packing two turbos under the bonnet.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
Engine & Transmission | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | City Mileage (Real-World) | Highway Mileage (Real-World) |
| 2.0-Litre Diesel Automatic (4x2) | 13.9 kmpl | 9–10 kmpl | 14–15 kmpl |
| 2.0-Litre Twin-Turbo Diesel Automatic (4x4) | 12.0 kmpl | 8–9.5 kmpl | 12–14 kmpl |
Moving such a large vehicle requires serious safety systems, and MG has packed the Gloster with plenty of modern tech. It is loaded to keep families secure.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The Gloster offers up to six airbags along with anti-lock brakes. The structure feels solidly built, giving the occupants a heavy, cocooning sense of security. Additionally, ISOFIX mounts for child seats come standard to help out families with younger kids.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
What makes the Gloster stand out from the rest of the pack is its advanced driver assistance systems (Level 1 ADAS). It has auto park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind zone detection. It also packs an electronic stability program, traction control, and a 360-degree camera to help you park this giant.
According to Kingshuk,
"We tested all the autonomous functions of the car and they work as advertised, though there were a few hiccups at times."
Safety Verdict
Overall, the Gloster gives you peace of mind because of its active and passive safety features. The presence of ADAS gives the driver an extra layer of confidence when navigating unpredictable highway traffic.
The tech suite inside the MG Gloster focuses heavily on integration and daily usability rather than pure novelty. It comes loaded with equipment that genuine buyers in this segment expect.
Infotainment and Interface
- The dashboard has a horizontal 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment panel.
- The system is quick to respond and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- You also get an eight-inch digital instrument console with analogue counters for speed and revs.
- The connected car technology has around 70 iSmart features and voice commands.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
- Three-zone climate control and a built-in air purifier keep the cabin fresh.
- The front seats have power adjustment, heating, and ventilation for extra comfort.
- The dual panoramic sunroof makes the large cabin feel even more airy.
- The 64-colour ambient lighting is a premium touch often seen on much more expensive cars.
Kingshuk adds,
“The Gloster gets auto park assist and adaptive cruise control along with lane departure warning, auto emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind spot detection.”
With all three rows of seats up, the MG Gloster offers a rather modest 343 litres of boot space. The load lip is fairly high, so hauling heavy suitcases into the back requires a bit of effort. However, if you fold the third row down, the load bay opens up into an enormous 1,350-litre space. This flat floor easily accommodates a family's worth of holiday luggage. The power-operated tailgate is also a welcome nicety when your hands are full.
Built on a traditional ladder-frame chassis, the MG Gloster prioritises comfort over corner-carving. The suspension easily cushions occupants from most harsh bumps.
City Driving
Taking this SUV through city traffic requires some patience. The steering is relatively light and easy to use, though it feels dead off-centre. At slow speeds, the suspension irons out potholes nicely. The twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine has excellent low-end torque right from 1,700 rpm. Meanwhile, the eight-speed automatic gearbox works quietly, keeping the car in the sweet spot of its revving range.
Highway Driving
Out there, where the city’s streets end, and the long stretch comes to life, the big SUV feels stable and planted. The tall gear ratios help it settle into a relaxed, long-legged cruise. Refinement is excellent, with hardly any engine noise seeping into the cabin. However, there is a fair amount of body roll if you push it too hard into sweeping bends.
According to Kingshuk,
“The Gloster has a plush ride quality and the suspension tuned well for Indian roads. But the occupants in the third row might find the ride to be a little bouncy.”

Off-Road Driving
The Gloster is built to handle off-tarmac situations. The BorgWarner four-wheel-drive system gives you seven different terrain modes. Switching between Rock, Sand, and Mud alters the traction control to pull the heavy SUV through sticky situations, and it is a proper 4x4 capable of handling most broken trails with worry-free confidence.
MG offers the Gloster in a few different trims to suit different tastes. While the 2.0-litre diesel engine is the standard and only option, you can choose between 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains instead.
| Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
| Sharp | 2.0-Litre Diesel, eight-speed automatic (4x2) | 12.3-inch touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, up to six airbags | Buyers wanting a feature-rich, entry-level 4x2 option |

The Essentials That You Don’t Get
- A petrol engine option
- A manual gearbox for purists
- More engaging steering feedback

Picking the right variant mostly falls upon your driving environment and aesthetic preferences.
Best for Everyday Urban Use: Sharp 4x2
If you mostly drive inside the city and rarely hit the mud, the two-wheel-drive Sharp variant ticks boxes here. It gets the essential creature comforts without the extra mechanical drag of the 4x4 system.
Best for Highway Touring: Savvy 4x4
The Savvy trim is the sweet spot for families who spend weekends out on the open road. The addition of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in this one takes the fatigue out of long highway runs.
Best for Road Presence: Blackstorm Edition
If you want an imposing stance, the Blackstorm edition delivers. The blacked-out grille, dark alloys, and red brake calipers give it a seriously aggressive look that commands attention.

The full-size SUV segment has always been quite competitive in India, and the Gloster goes through the same trials in this segment. It faces some heavyweights equipped with serious brand loyalty and rugged underpinnings.

There’s the Toyota Fortuner, for instance, a highly reliable vehicle with slightly better torque. There’s also the Jeep Meridian, a relatively underpowered SUV compared to the MG Gloster, and also quite cheaper than the latter.
| Model | Engine | Power / Torque | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
| MG Gloster | 2.0-Litre Diesel | 159–215 bhp / 373–480 Nm | Massive cabin space, Level 1 ADAS, plush ride | Rs. 38.33 – Rs. 43.16 lakh |
| Toyota Fortuner | 2.7-Litre Petrol, 2.8-Litre Diesel | 164–201 bhp / 245–500 Nm | Bulletproof reliability, extreme off-road capability | Rs. 34.16 – Rs. 49.59 lakh |
| Jeep Meridian | 2.0-Litre Diesel | 168 bhp / 350 Nm | Excellent ride quality, strong highway stability | Rs. 23.33 – Rs. 37.82 lakh |
Which Full-Size SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the MG Gloster if sheer size, third-row space, and an extensive list of tech features are your top priorities.
- Choose the Toyota Fortuner if you want unmatched resale value and a utilitarian workhorse that rarely breaks down.
- Choose the Jeep Meridian if you prefer uncompromising ride quality and top highway balance.
Pros
- Tremendous road presence with huge dimensions
- Exceptionally quiet and refined cabin
- Stacked with premium comfort
- Capable four-wheel-drive hardware
- Strong mid-range pulling power
Cons
- Noticeable body roll around corners
- Bouncy ride in the third row
- Very thirsty fuel economy
- No petrol engine option
Verdict
The MG Gloster is an absolute mammoth of an SUV that delivers incredible value for your money. It does not try to be a sporty corner-carver; instead, it focuses on isolating you from the chaos of the outside world. The cabin is airy, the seats are plush, and the suspension effortlessly irons out bad stretches of tarmac. Its twin-turbo 2.0-Litre diesel engine has enough grunt to hustle this heavy vehicle without breaking a sweat.
Sure, it might not have the badge snobbery of its Japanese rivals, but it easily undercuts them on sheer equipment and everyday usability. And with the MG Majestor stepping up as its successor, the Gloster may exhibit its age compared to more modern vehicles. But if you’re okay with these nuances, and you have a large family that demands a comfortable mile-muncher, the MG Gloster will still thrill you with its true 4x4 capability and that genuinely upmarket interior.
As Kingshuk concludes,
“The MG Gloster has a lot to offer. It is really, really big, feels solidly built, offers a lot of features and creature comfort options and the driving experience is quite good too.”
MG Gloster Mileage
MG Gloster mileage is 12 KM/L as per ARAI The Automatic Diesel engine has a mileage of 12.4 KM/L.
| Fuel Type | Transmission | Mileage | City Mileage | Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel | Automatic | 12.4 KM/L | 11 KM/L | 13 KM/L |
