MG ZS EV car&bike Expert Take

In this MG ZS EV expert review, the SUV is best suited to urban buyers and families looking for a practical, easy-to-drive electric SUV with a usable real-world range. It is not ideal for those seeking performance-focused driving or segment-leading features, but its standout strength is how it delivers a smooth, stress-free ownership experience with strong everyday usability.

This is not an EV trying too hard to impress. Instead, it focuses on doing the basics really well. As Shams Raza Naqvi says, “The ZS EV feels more sorted than before. The added range and smoother response make it genuinely easy to live with every day.” That is where it stands out. It builds trust over time rather than chasing instant excitement.

The MG ZS EV was tested by our expert Shams Raza Naqvi, who has been test-driving vehicles across India for over eight years.  We covered close to 250 kilometres of varied terrain with heavy city traffic, uneven roads, and open highway stretches.

The top-spec variant was tested, allowing us to experience the full feature set and performance. This was not just about numbers on paper. The focus was on how the SUV behaves in situations most owners deal with daily, from stop-go traffic to relaxed highway runs and quick overtakes when needed.

What stands out is how easy the ZS EV feels to get used to, especially if you are moving from a petrol or diesel SUV. There is no learning curve. It simply feels familiar, just quieter and smoother, which makes daily driving far less tiring.

The MG ZS EV facelift has allowed this electric SUV to remain relevant in a segment that is becoming increasingly competitive. ZS EV was launched as the most affordable electric SUV in India. ZS EV remains relevant with regular and meaningful updates in today's market in spite of the availability of multiple options.

The biggest improvement comes in the form of the updated battery pack, which now delivers a claimed range of 461 km. This change transforms how the car is perceived. It is no longer limited to short city runs and feels more usable for longer drives.

The ZS EV is built on a global platform that has been modified for electric vehicles. It feels stable and well-made. It is for buyers who want a high-end experience without any extra hassle.

The ZS EV is a useful and well-rounded electric SUV that doesn't use gimmicks or aggressive styling to get your attention. Instead, it focuses on usability, range, and comfort.

Watch: 2022 MG ZS EV Review | More Tech Savvy, Longer Range

It's easy to understand the MG ZS EV lineup because all of the models have the same battery, motor, and driving experience. The differences are in comfort, features, and ease of use.

Executive & Excite - Base Variants

These variants are the first step into the ZS EV range and are meant to give you the basic electric driving experience at a lower price.

Key highlights:

  • Same battery and range
  • Essential infotainment system
  • Core safety features

Best for buyers who care more about value and usefulness than high-end features.

Exclusive - Mid Variant

The Exclusive version adds important features that make it easier and more comfortable to use every day.

Key highlights:

  • Bigger touchscreen
  • Improved interior finish
  • Additional comfort features

For most buyers, this is the best option.

Essence - Top Variant

The ZS EV Essence version has the most features and is the most complete.

Key highlights:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Connected car technology
  • High-end interior finish
  • Enhanced cabin experience

Best for people who want a more premium EV experience.

Variant Strategy – What Matters

The main factors that affect the decision are budget and the features needed, since all variants have the same range and performance.

The Exclusive version is the best choice for most people, but the Essence version is the best choice for people who want all the features.

Read: MG ZS EV: Variants Explained

The MG ZS EV doesn't really demand your attention right away. But give it a closer look, and you start noticing the details that give it presence. That facelift has tidied everything up nicely, helping it feel more current and tuned specifically for EV life. Up front, the closed-off grille immediately tells you this is not a conventional SUV, and the charging port neatly hidden within it keeps the design tidy.

What works here is the balance. It is not overly futuristic, which actually helps in daily use because it still feels familiar. The LED headlamps are sharp without being aggressive, and the overall stance feels proportionate for city as well as highway driving.

  • Aero-optimised front grille with integrated charging port
  • Full LED headlamps with DRLs
  • Clean side profile with 17-inch alloys
  • Subtle EV-specific design touches

Around the side, the design is simple and uncluttered. There are no unnecessary cuts or heavy character lines, which gives it a slightly understated look. At the rear, the LED tail-lamps stretch neatly across, adding a bit of width to the design.

It may not grab attention instantly, but the design grows on you the more time you spend with it,” says Shams Raza Naqvi. That sums it up well. It is not dramatic, but it feels well thought out.

Read: 2022 MG ZS EV Facelift Review

Step inside the MG ZS EV, and you immediately notice how the focus shifts to comfort and practicality. The interior skips the over-the-top flash. It sticks to a straightforward and useful design instead, and that approach pays off for daily driving.

Things stay neat inside, centred around a big 10.1-inch touchscreen. It handles Android Auto and Apple CarPlay without a hitch. Best of all, you can work it easily on the move. Then there's the full digital gauge cluster, which brings some fresh style but keeps the setup from getting too fiddly.

  • 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support
  • Fully digital instrument cluster
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • PM 2.5 air filter and connected car tech

Material quality is decent, especially in the top variant, with soft-touch elements in key areas. The seats are well-cushioned, which makes a noticeable difference during longer drives.

That said, there are a few misses. You do not get ventilated seats, and features like an auto-dimming IRVM are absent. These are small things, but in this price range, you do expect them.

“The cabin feels comfortable and easy to live with, even if it is not the most feature-loaded in the segment.” That is the best way to describe it. It prioritises usability over gimmicks.

Rear Seat Reality

The back seat of the MG ZS EV is one of its best features, especially for families. There is enough legroom and headroom for average-sized adults, and the flat floor helps improve comfort for the middle passenger.

The seat cushioning is supportive, and the slightly upright seating position gives you a good view out, which makes longer journeys more comfortable. Rear AC vents and charging options add to the practicality.

Boot space stands at 448-litre, which is more than enough for weekend luggage or airport runs. It is usable and well-shaped, not just a number on paper.

Compared to rivals like the Tata Nexon EV or even the Hyundai Kona Electric, the ZS EV feels more spacious in the rear, especially in terms of overall comfort.

For daily use and occasional long drives, the rear seat setup works well. It may not feel luxurious, but it definitely feels practical.

The MG ZS EV is not built to thrill you with aggressive acceleration. Instead, it focuses on delivering smooth, predictable, and easy performance that suits everyday driving conditions.

The electric motor provides instant torque, which helps the car get off the block faster. You do not have to plan overtakes too much. Just press the accelerator, and the response is immediate.

There are three driving modes available:

  • Eco mode for efficiency
  • Normal mode for balanced driving
  • Sport mode for sharper response

In Eco mode, the throttle response is softer, which helps maximise range. Normal mode feels the most natural for everyday use. Sport mode adds a sharper response. But it stays composed and easy to manage.

The power delivery remains smooth and predictable, making it easy to drive even for first-time EV users.

The performance is not exciting, but it is exactly what you need for daily driving,” says Shams Raza Naqvi. That is the philosophy here. It focuses on ease rather than excitement.

0–100 kmph Performance

The MG ZS EV hits 0 to 100 kmph in about 8.5 seconds. That's solid for what it's up against in the segment. Still, the real story isn't just that stat. It's how the power comes on.

The acceleration builds nicely and steadily. Smooth, without any jerks. There is no lag, and no gear shifts to interrupt the flow. You simply press the pedal and the car builds speed in a very controlled manner.

In city conditions, this makes a big difference. Quick traffic gaps are easier to manage, and the car never feels stressed. On highways, it maintains a comfortable speed without feeling strained.

It is not a performance-focused SUV, and it does not try to be one. Instead, it feels controlled, predictable, and confident, which is exactly what most buyers will appreciate.

Watch: 2021 MG ZS EV First Look

The MG ZS EV focuses on making electric ownership simple rather than complicated. With a 50.3 kWh battery and a claimed range of 461 km, it removes a major concern most buyers have before switching to EVs.

Battery CapacityClaimed RangeAC ChargingDC Fast Charging
50.3 kWh461 km8.5–9 hours0–80 per cent in 60 min
Source: car&bike

In real-world conditions, expect around 320–380 km depending on traffic and driving style. For most users, that is more than enough for daily commutes and even occasional longer drives.

Charging is straightforward. Overnight home charging works well, while fast charging gives you a quick top-up when needed. Regenerative braking also helps recover energy during city driving.

“The biggest advantage is that you stop thinking about range all the time,” says Shams Raza Naqvi. That is what makes the ZS EV easy to live with.

Safety in the ZS EV focuses on providing essential protection for everyday driving. While it may not offer segment-leading advanced systems, it delivers a mechanically sound and reassuring experience.

  • Six airbags
  • ABS with EBD
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Hill hold assist
  • Rear parking sensors and camera

You get a steady, no-surprises ride from the MG ZS EV in normal situations. That said, the missing ADAS options stand out a bit, now that other cars in the mix are loading up on them.

“It feels safe enough for daily use, but not segment-leading,” says Shams Raza Naqvi. That is a fair summary. It covers the basics well but does not go beyond.

The MG ZS EV is priced between Rs 17.99–20.5 lakh, placing it in the mid-range EV SUV space. It is not the cheapest option, but it offers a well-rounded package.

VariantPricing
ExecutiveRs 17.99 lakh
Excite ProRs 18.50 lakh
Exclusive Rs 19.50 lakh
EssenceRs 20.50 lakh
Source: car&bike

The base variant delivers the same performance and range, which really boosts its overall value. Higher variants put the emphasis on added comfort and extra features.

Overall, the pricing positions the ZS EV as a well-rounded offering in the mid-range EV segment, balancing usability, range and features effectively.

The MG ZS EV competes with several electric SUVs, each with its own strengths.

Tata Nexon EV127 bhp215 Nm489 kmRs 14.49–20.06 lakh
Source: MG ZS EVMahindra BE 6Tata Nexon EV

The ZS EV stands out as a balanced option. It has more room than the Nexon EV and is easier to use in some ways than the Kona. It might not be the cheapest, but it has a better overall package.

Pros

  • Smooth and refined drive
  • Practical real-world range
  • Comfortable ride quality
  • Spacious cabin

Cons

  • Missing ADAS features
  • No ventilated seats
  • Slightly expensive
  • Feature gaps

Verdict

The MG ZS EV is different from other electric SUVs because it is comfortable and easy to use. It might not have the best features or performance in its class, but it does what matters most: it drives smoothly, has a good range, and is easy to use every day. It’s a nice pragmatic gateway for those transitioning to electric mobility.

  • Daily commuters
  • First-time EV buyers
  • Family usage

Not Ideal For

  • Performance enthusiasts

MG ZS is a bit expensive but savings of electricity use will catch up. Nexon EV is a bit smaller. Kona I did not like as was looking for spacious and more SUV type. At 155kms top speed car does not slow down. Company has put speed limit. Even at this speed drives very planted and feels confident. Pros Lots of room Though is compact SUV, it's stance is like an SUV with great visibility and easy to get in and out Interior is very comfortable Boot size is decent 0 - 100 it does in 8 seconds Finishing is good iSmart App Cons Some features in App is missing compared to Thai cersion Missing features Auto Pilot, blind spot assist, front sensors Missing Led head lamp plus missing Led bright light in cabin and boot. Very happy so far. Will write 6 months review soon. Range is no problem for me as I drive max avg 50 Kms a day so with 300 Kms range on full battery charging every 5th day. That's not bad also the feeling of not going to petrol pump is great. ( You know what I mean) Charging at home is simple. Car comes with home charge panel. Wiring is done by co and charging station 7.5 KW is installed free of cost. With higher cost of electricity in Mumbai it costs around Rs.1.2-1.5 per km. That's a lot of savings on my previous petrol car that used to cost close to Rs 8 per km. If you are planning to buy any ICE or EV will definitely insist to test drive MG ZS. You will never drive ICE car after this. With regen level 3, you can literally drive car using only 1 foot for acceleration for 95% of time. This is very important for me as because of COVID have relive my driver for 2 years. So will be driving on my own. Will share 6 months report. So far very happy.
