  • What's New ?

    Introduction

    • The TVS Orbiter is an affordable family-oriented e-scooter, launched below the iQube lineup.
    • Unlike the performance-focused iQube, the Orbiter emphasises function, range efficiency, and value for urban commuting.
    • An interesting fact is that this scooter is available under a Battery-as-a-Service scheme.
    • It competes with other entry-level e-scooters like the Ather Rizta, Bajaj Chetak, and Ola S1 X.

    • As for the safety equipment, the Orbiter features combined braking system, EBS, regenerative braking, hill hold, cruise control, reverse assist, and a pass switch.
    • Coming to the storage options, the e-scooter gets a 34-litre under-seat storage bay, front storage box, and carry hooks.
    • It rides on 14-inch front and 12-inch rear alloy wheels shod with tubeless tyres.

TVS Orbiter Expert Reviews

car&bike Expert Take

"The TVS Orbiter isn't clearly built while keeping performance in mind; its top speed is strictly locked at 68 kmph. What you actually get is massive utility from this scooter. And with the new BaaS option, it is currently one of the most practical, budget-friendly EVs in the Indian market."

You get a large 14-inch front wheel for bad roads, a cavernous 34-litre boot, and a low 760 mm seat. Throw in the new Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option that slashes the upfront buying price, and the Orbiter becomes one of the most practical, budget-friendly EVs you can buy today.

Sitting just below the iQube in the TVS lineup, the Orbiter looks completely different from the rest of the brand’s portfolio. It ditches soft curves for a boxy, straight-lined design, packs a large 14-inch front wheel for bad roads, and has a cavernous 34-litre boot for hauling cargo.

The Orbiter also has a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) plan that drops its initial starting price down to Rs. 49,999. That makes it incredibly tempting for delivery riders, college students, and anyone else on a strict budget.

Preetam Bora spent some time with the scooter, and he has this to say about it,

“The TVS Orbiter gets a lot of things right. Its funky and attractive styling certainly will grab attention from customers of all ages, young, middle-aged, and of both genders.”

The Orbiter relies on a straightforward, cost-effective hub motor that maximises battery efficiency.

Motor & Transmission

Motor TypeMax PowerBattery CapacityTop SpeedTransmissionDrivetrain
BLDC Hub Motor4.4 kW (Peak) / 2.5 kW (Nominal)3.1 kWh Lithium-ion68 kmphAutomaticHub-Drive

Key Takeaways

  • The motor is mounted directly in the rear wheel.
  • Reaching from zero to 40 kmph takes about 6.8 seconds.
  • Top speed is electronically capped at 68 kmph to save battery life.

City Riding Experience

  • You get two riding modes: Eco and City.
  • Eco mode restricts you to 46 kmph, but the mid-range pickup is still decent enough.
  • However, overtaking should be carefully planned since then, the scooter feels a bit sluggish.

Highway Riding Experience

  • With a 68 kmph top speed, the Orbiter is honestly not meant for the highways.
  • That said, on wide, fast-moving city roads, it feels surprisingly stable.
  • You can credit that stability to the segment-first 14-inch front wheel.
  • This larger wheel rolls right over expansion joints and keeps the front end straight.

Preetam notes,

“From the get-go, the Orbiter comes across as a friendly and familiar scooter.”

It doesn't look like an iQube or a Jupiter. TVS went with a boxy, almost industrial aesthetic instead.

Kerb Weight101 kg (V1) / 112 kg (V2)107 kg105 kg (2 kWh) / 113 kg (4 kWh)

Key Takeaways

  • The low 760 mm seat height makes it highly accessible for just about anyone.
  • Running a 14-inch front wheel and a 12-inch rear wheel gives it a slightly imposing stance.
  • With 165 mm of ground clearance, you won't be scraping the battery over speed breakers.

Build Quality & Materials

The TVS Orbiter is built on a tough tubular steel frame that handles bad roads without any issues. The body panels are all plastic to keep the cost and weight down, but the gaps are tight, and the paint looks rich. There are a few exposed bolts around the floorboard and front visor, which break the clean look slightly, but nothing rattles or squeaks while riding.

You get six dual-tone paint options in this scooter across two variants.

Pros

  • Massive 34-litre underseat storage
  • Stability of the 14-inch front wheel
  • Accessible 760 mm seat height
  • The BaaS pricing structure
  • The clear LCD dashboard

Cons

  • The capped 68 kmph top speed
  • No front disc brake
  • Polarising boxy design
  • V2 variant takes 4 hours to charge
  • Windscreen issues

Verdict

By capping the top speed at 68 kmph, TVS sacrificed highway capability to maximise the Orbiter’s battery range and keep its running costs low. The addition of the 14-inch front wheel handles broken city roads beautifully, and the massive 34-litre boot acts like a secondary trunk. If you want a fast, aggressively styled weekend toy, this one is not the right option. But if you want an incredibly practical, dependable daily workhorse that gets you across the city safely, the TVS Orbiter stands out.

Preetam concludes,

“For anyone looking at a decent range, funky design and affordable pricing, the Orbiter in its current form still makes sense, more so for gig workers who need the space and practicality it offers and don’t really need more than the performance it packs.”
