    Introduction

    Hyundai i20 Exterior

    • The latest iteration of the new-gen i20 was launched in India in November 2020.
    • It is currently in its third generation and offered in a range of variants, colours, and powertrains to choose from.
    • In mid-2025, the model was launched with new variants, and this rejig also made the i20 the most affordable CVT hatchback in the country.

    Exterior

    Hyundai i20 Grille

    • The new-gen Hyundai i20's fascia is dominated by the large, blacked-out cascading grille.
    • It is flanked by LED projector headlamps and LED DRLs on either side.
    • On the lower side of the bumper are projector fog lamps housed in triangular-shaped surrounds and a black-skid plate.
    • Some highlights of the side profile include chrome door handles, chrome window lines, black A, B, C-pillars, and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.
    • The dual tone variants even come with a black roof and black ORVMs, which feature puddle lamps by default.
    • At the back, the i20 sports an integrated spoiler, shark-fin antenna, and Z-shaped LED taillights.
    • It even gets a chrome strip running between the taillamps, high mounted stop lamp, rear wiper and washer, rear bumper-mounted number plate recess, and a black skid plate.

    Interior

    Hyundai i20 Console

    • Step inside the i20 and the premium hatchback greets you with an all-black theme.
    • It gets a four-spoke multi-function steering wheel borrowed from the Creta.
    • Then, there's a fully digital instrument cluster with a coloured MID showcasing a range of information.
    • But what also calls in for attention is the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports BlueLink connectivity, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
    • Positioned below that is a fully automatic climate control system and a wireless charging pad with cooling function.
    • Further to the left side of the i20’s dashboard is a glove box with a cooling function.
    • Notably, the AC vents get red inserts in the turbo variants.
    • A few other notable features include a sunroof, air purifier, and a sunglass holder.
    • Moreover, this being a premium hatchback, the second-row occupants get their own AC vents, armrest, adjustable headrests, and a USB charging port.
    • To break the black monotony, there's red stitching with the black leather upholstery.
    • On the safety front, the Hyundai i20 comes equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, VSM, rear parking sensors, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.
    • Moreover, the hatchback boasts a seat-belt reminder system, speed alert system, and a rear parking camera.

    Powertrain

    Hyundai i20 Safety Airbags

    • Powertrains for the Hyundai i20 include both petrol and diesel engine options.
    • The 1.2-litre engine comes mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or an IVT unit.
    • But then, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mill is mated to a six-speed iMT unit or a seven-speed DCT.
    • On the other hand, there's a 1.5-litre diesel motor available exclusively with a six-speed speed manual gearbox.

Hyundai i20 car&bike Expert Take

The Hyundai i20 is built for buyers who want a premium hatchback that combines refinement, performance, and modern features without compromise. The car feels sharp, premium, and genuinely fun to drive.
The steering feels eager, the engine wakes up past 2,000 rpm, and suddenly your everyday commute feels noticeably more engaging and enjoyable. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar from car&bike puts it, “It makes it the most powerful premium hatchback in the country.” And honestly, you feel that the moment you press the throttle in Sport mode.

To really understand the Hyundai i20, you can’t just take it around the block and call it a day. You have to live with it. That’s exactly how Siddharth Vinayak Patankar, senior editor at car&bike, approached it. With years of experience and thousands of kilometres of testing under his belt, he’s driven everything from entry hatchbacks to high-end performance machines. Hence, when he says something stands out, it does.
The Hyundai i20 was tested the way you would actually use it. The testing included dense city traffic, endless traffic signals, sudden highway overtakes, and broken road patches. And then there are long highway runs where you just settle in to see what the car is really made of.

The balance, as Siddharth points out in the review, “It makes it so much peppy, especially in Sport mode, ”really stands out when you switch modes and the car responds more sharply". The Hyundai i20 top model proves you don’t need an SUV to feel premium, powerful, and completely in control on Indian roads.

The Hyundai i20 sits at the top of Hyundai’s hatchback lineup in India and represents the brand’s most premium offering in this segment. This is the car you choose when you want your hatchback to feel sporty and tech-loaded. The bold grille, sharp headlamps, and strong character lines give it a planted, confident stance. It’s wider and longer than before, yet it never feels bulky. The design looks purposeful and distinct on the road.
Engine options include:

  • 1.2-litre petrol for smooth daily use
  • 1.0-litre turbo petrol with 118 bhp

The turbo petrol completely changes the car’s personality. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar says, “It makes it the most powerful premium hatchback in the country.” Once you push past 2,000rpm, the surge feels lively and engaging.
Positioned above entry-level hatchbacks and competing with rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Tata Altroz, the i20 doesn’t fight on price alone. It competes on refinement, features, and driving experience.

The different Hyundai i20 variants feel like steps on a spectrum, where each upgrade adds noticeable improvements in features, comfort, and technology. From the most practical features to the premium experience, the lineup offers it all for you to take your pick.

Hyundai i20 Base Model – Magna

The Hyundai i20 Magna serves as the base model in the lineup. It offers reliability and a premium feel. Its 1.2-litre petrol engine is easy in traffic and fuel-efficient. Hyundai i20 base model offers quality daily performance. The car is practical, efficient, balanced and well-suited to improve the day-to-day commute. With its light steering, comfortable seats, and no tech overload, the Hyundai i20 base model allows buyers to enjoy simplicity and everyday comfort without overwhelming technology.

Mid Variant – Sportz

The Sportz is a variant that makes you feel the change, an upgrade from the usual experience. You get a bigger touchscreen, connected-car features, cooler alloys, and more comfort. The car feels like a step up from standard without a massive price jump. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar pointed out, “The steering feels lighter and more confident around town.” You feel that especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Hyundai i20 Top Model – Asta (O)

The Asta (O) is where the hatchback starts feeling like it belongs in the premium class.
It offers a huge 10.25-inch touchscreen, a Bose seven-speaker system, a fully digital instrument cluster, a sunroof, six airbags, and even wireless charging, among other features.
Choosing the turbo petrol engine here doesn't just look luxurious; it feels so as well. The sport mode is a source of delight to many, as is hearing the engine’s growl. From daily drives and local commutes to long highway runs, this is the variant that makes you feel different.

When you talk about the Hyundai i20’s performance, you must understand that it was carefully made to match the way you drive. Let’s break it down quickly so it makes sense:

Source: car&bike

The moment you take the car out on the road, you begin to notice the difference in its driving character. The regular 1.2-litre petrol engine is calm and predictable. The Hyundai i20’s naturally aspirated petrol engine does not respond as quickly as the turbo variant, but once it settles in, it just pulls through effortlessly.
Push it a little harder on open stretches and you’ll notice how composed it remains. The steering feels precise, and the engine response stays consistent without feeling strained. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar rightly mentions, “It makes it so much peppy… in Sport mode everything changes.”
The i20 sets a high bar in performance, comfort, and balance — offering energy when you want it, and calm when you need it.

Limitations

  • Brief turbo lag at very low rpm
  • Seven-speed DCT feels hesitant in slow traffic
  • Steering feedback isn’t sharp enough for hardcore enthusiasts

Read: 2020 Hyundai i20 Review

The Hyundai i20 isn’t a hatchback that fades into the background. It demands attention — and earns it. At first glance, the bold cascading grille gives it a wide, planted stance. The sharp LED headlamps add a crisp, modern edge. It comes across as confident and modern in its overall presentation, like it knows exactly where it fits in the segment.
Key exterior highlights include:

  • Bold cascading front grille
  • Sharp LED headlamps
  • Strong character lines
  • 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels
  • Z-shaped LED tail lamps

On the side, the slim lines of the body and the creases give the car a dynamic and forward-leaning appearance. The alloys provide a flair that is not over-the-top. At the rear, the Z-shaped LED tail lamps complete the design beautifully. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar notes, the styling feels intentional, like every line has purpose. The i20’s exterior signals premium confidence in a segment where many play safe.

Once inside the Hyundai i20, the first thing that strikes you is the way everything falls into place. The seats are comfortable and well-trimmed. The dashboard design is easy to use and the materials used make the cabin feel solid and well-built. Nothing feels forced. The modern, tech-savvy feel of the digital instrument cluster and the large touchscreen is accompanied by the surprisingly relaxed lounge-like ambience created by the soft ambient lighting at night.
Key interior highlights include:

  • Digital instrument cluster
  • Large touchscreen infotainment
  • Ambient lighting
  • Premium-feel steering wheel
  • Multiple USB ports (front and rear)
  • Practical storage spaces

As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar says, “The steering wheel taken from the Creta makes it more premium.” And you feel that every time you hold it. Practicality is clearly intentional. The storage cubbies, cup holders, glovebox, and door bins are thoughtfully placed. Visibility is good, with no awkward blind spots, making daily drives easy and relaxed.

The i20 offers 311-litres of boot space. It may not be class-leading, but it’s more than sufficient for weekend luggage, groceries, or even luggage for a short weekend getaway. Fold the rear seats down, and you gain extra flexibility for longer items. Inside, the i20 feels comfortable, premium, and practical — never like a compromise.

Mileage is more than numbers on a sticker. It is an important aspect associated with efficiency and performance and the i20 delivers respectable fuel efficiency for a premium hatchback. Here’s how the engines stack up in real life:

Siddharth Vinayak Patankar aptly states that the i20 delivers “strong real-world efficiency, even with all the tech and performance you get.” And that’s exactly what I experienced. It's not just about the claimed figures, it’s about what you actually get every time you fill up and the Hyundai i20 gives you sensible, real-world mileage across engine choices.

When you think about cars, it’s not just about how they feel but also about how secure they make you feel. The i20 does a pretty strong job of reassuring you every time you climb in.

The cabin feels solid, the doors close with a reassuring thunk, and the car holds its shape without any creaks or unsettling feedback even on sudden turns and rough terrains. It has:

  • Six airbags as standard
  • ABS with EBD
  • Electronic stability control
  • Tyre pressure monitoring
  • ISOFIX child seat anchors

It covers many bases for your safety. It brings you control and maintains a stable and predictable performance. With the i20, safety isn’t just a spec sheet number. It is the confidence-building feel behind the wheel that makes everyday driving genuinely reassuring.

Siddharth Vinayak Patankar describes it well as a “well-built and confidence-inspiring” vehicle.

The Hyundai i20 was evaluated by Global NCAP in 2022 and received a three-star safety rating for both adult and child occupant protection, though the build quality and standard safety kit still give you reassuring confidence in everyday driving.

The Hyundai i20 is packed with tech that makes your life easy and experience better. Its features include:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • BlueLink-connected tech remote start
  • Geofencing
  • Live vehicle status
  • Bose seven-speaker system

And as Siddharth Vinayak Patankar noted in his review, “These tech touches make the i20 feel like something from a segment above.” I couldn’t agree more; every little feature adds up to an experience that feels modern and polished.

There are several practical features that help save time and reduce everyday driving effort, thereby facilitating efficiency and comfort. The i20’s tech isn’t just there to impress. It makes your everyday drive feel easier, smarter, and a bit more fun.
Watch: New Gen Hyundai i20 Review

Driving the Hyundai i20 makes you feel connected to the road without ever feeling like a chore. The steering is light and intuitive once you get out into the traffic in the city. You can easily navigate through traffic jams or crawl slowly through heavy traffic. The i20 is easy to handle and never feels bulky or tiresome.
Key driving highlights include:

  • Light and responsive steering
  • Balanced suspension setup
  • Good high-speed stability
  • Predictable cornering manners

On open roads, the suspension strikes an impressive balance. It absorbs potholes and rough patches without unsettling the cabin. The car remains stable and comfortable even while taking long highway curves. It also responds to bumps and changes in the surface with confidence in the day-to-day driving, thus providing you with predictable control. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar noted, “It’s comfortable and composed in almost every situation.”

When you stack the i20 up against its rivals, it’s like watching three different personalities at a party. Each car brings something interesting to the table. Let us look at the details at a glance.

Source: car&bike

The rivals all have their strengths — affordability, safety focus, or rugged appeal. The Baleno leads on mileage, the Altroz offers diesel torque and strong safety credentials, while the Glanza focuses on value and fuel efficiency. But the Hyundai i20 blends bold design, tech richness, and playful performance in a way that most competitors simply don’t.

Pros

  • Turbo engine makes daily driving exciting
  • Cabin truly feels premium, not basic
  • Tech features beat most rivals easily
  • Ride comfort soothes city chaos

Cons

  • High-end variants come at a premium price.
  • Turbo lag annoys at low revs
  • Some chrome detailing feels overdone

Verdict

The Hyundai i20 expert review makes it clear — this is a hatchback for someone who still enjoys driving but also wants comfort, technology, and everyday usability. The turbo petrol engine is genuinely fun to use. The cabin feels like a proper upgrade, and the ride quality keeps you relaxed even when roads aren’t perfect.

Put simply, the Hyundai i20 stands out because it makes everyday driving enjoyable without sacrificing comfort or practicality. Not just practical. Not just efficient. Enjoyable.

Yes, it costs more than some rivals. And yes, you could choose something more basic and save money. But the moment that digital cluster lights up and the turbo pulls strong past 2,000 rpm, you remember why you picked it. If you want a premium-feeling hatchback that adds energy to your daily commute, the Hyundai i20 delivers.

Best For

  • Buyers seeking premium hatch experience
  • Tech enthusiasts demanding modern features
  • Daily commuters wanting refined comfort
  • Individuals who love turbo performance

Not Ideal For

  • Budget buyers chasing lowest price
  • Drivers preferring soft overall steering
  • Those wanting rugged SUV stance
