What's New on Hyundai i20?
Introduction

- The latest iteration of the new-gen i20 was launched in India in November 2020.
- It is currently in its third generation and offered in a range of variants, colours, and powertrains to choose from.
- In mid-2025, the model was launched with new variants, and this rejig also made the i20 the most affordable CVT hatchback in the country.
Exterior

- The new-gen Hyundai i20's fascia is dominated by the large, blacked-out cascading grille.
- It is flanked by LED projector headlamps and LED DRLs on either side.
- On the lower side of the bumper are projector fog lamps housed in triangular-shaped surrounds and a black-skid plate.
- Some highlights of the side profile include chrome door handles, chrome window lines, black A, B, C-pillars, and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.
- The dual tone variants even come with a black roof and black ORVMs, which feature puddle lamps by default.
- At the back, the i20 sports an integrated spoiler, shark-fin antenna, and Z-shaped LED taillights.
- It even gets a chrome strip running between the taillamps, high mounted stop lamp, rear wiper and washer, rear bumper-mounted number plate recess, and a black skid plate.
Interior

- Step inside the i20 and the premium hatchback greets you with an all-black theme.
- It gets a four-spoke multi-function steering wheel borrowed from the Creta.
- Then, there's a fully digital instrument cluster with a coloured MID showcasing a range of information.
- But what also calls in for attention is the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports BlueLink connectivity, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Positioned below that is a fully automatic climate control system and a wireless charging pad with cooling function.
- Further to the left side of the i20’s dashboard is a glove box with a cooling function.
- Notably, the AC vents get red inserts in the turbo variants.
- A few other notable features include a sunroof, air purifier, and a sunglass holder.
- Moreover, this being a premium hatchback, the second-row occupants get their own AC vents, armrest, adjustable headrests, and a USB charging port.
- To break the black monotony, there's red stitching with the black leather upholstery.
- On the safety front, the Hyundai i20 comes equipped with six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, VSM, rear parking sensors, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.
- Moreover, the hatchback boasts a seat-belt reminder system, speed alert system, and a rear parking camera.
Powertrain

- Powertrains for the Hyundai i20 include both petrol and diesel engine options.
- The 1.2-litre engine comes mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or an IVT unit.
- But then, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mill is mated to a six-speed iMT unit or a seven-speed DCT.
- On the other hand, there's a 1.5-litre diesel motor available exclusively with a six-speed speed manual gearbox.

Hyundai i20 car&bike Expert Take
The Hyundai i20 is built for buyers who want a premium hatchback that combines refinement, performance, and modern features without compromise. The car feels sharp, premium, and genuinely fun to drive.
The steering feels eager, the engine wakes up past 2,000 rpm, and suddenly your everyday commute feels noticeably more engaging and enjoyable. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar from car&bike puts it, “It makes it the most powerful premium hatchback in the country.” And honestly, you feel that the moment you press the throttle in Sport mode.

To really understand the Hyundai i20, you can’t just take it around the block and call it a day. You have to live with it. That’s exactly how Siddharth Vinayak Patankar, senior editor at car&bike, approached it. With years of experience and thousands of kilometres of testing under his belt, he’s driven everything from entry hatchbacks to high-end performance machines. Hence, when he says something stands out, it does.
The Hyundai i20 was tested the way you would actually use it. The testing included dense city traffic, endless traffic signals, sudden highway overtakes, and broken road patches. And then there are long highway runs where you just settle in to see what the car is really made of.

The balance, as Siddharth points out in the review, “It makes it so much peppy, especially in Sport mode, ”really stands out when you switch modes and the car responds more sharply". The Hyundai i20 top model proves you don’t need an SUV to feel premium, powerful, and completely in control on Indian roads.
The Hyundai i20 sits at the top of Hyundai’s hatchback lineup in India and represents the brand’s most premium offering in this segment. This is the car you choose when you want your hatchback to feel sporty and tech-loaded. The bold grille, sharp headlamps, and strong character lines give it a planted, confident stance. It’s wider and longer than before, yet it never feels bulky. The design looks purposeful and distinct on the road.
Engine options include:
- 1.2-litre petrol for smooth daily use
- 1.0-litre turbo petrol with 118 bhp
The turbo petrol completely changes the car’s personality. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar says, “It makes it the most powerful premium hatchback in the country.” Once you push past 2,000rpm, the surge feels lively and engaging.
Positioned above entry-level hatchbacks and competing with rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Tata Altroz, the i20 doesn’t fight on price alone. It competes on refinement, features, and driving experience.
The different Hyundai i20 variants feel like steps on a spectrum, where each upgrade adds noticeable improvements in features, comfort, and technology. From the most practical features to the premium experience, the lineup offers it all for you to take your pick.
Hyundai i20 Base Model – Magna
The Hyundai i20 Magna serves as the base model in the lineup. It offers reliability and a premium feel. Its 1.2-litre petrol engine is easy in traffic and fuel-efficient. Hyundai i20 base model offers quality daily performance. The car is practical, efficient, balanced and well-suited to improve the day-to-day commute. With its light steering, comfortable seats, and no tech overload, the Hyundai i20 base model allows buyers to enjoy simplicity and everyday comfort without overwhelming technology.
Mid Variant – Sportz
The Sportz is a variant that makes you feel the change, an upgrade from the usual experience. You get a bigger touchscreen, connected-car features, cooler alloys, and more comfort. The car feels like a step up from standard without a massive price jump. As Siddharth Vinayak Patankar pointed out, “The steering feels lighter and more confident around town.” You feel that especially in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
Hyundai i20 Top Model – Asta (O)
The Asta (O) is where the hatchback starts feeling like it belongs in the premium class.
It offers a huge 10.25-inch touchscreen, a Bose seven-speaker system, a fully digital instrument cluster, a sunroof, six airbags, and even wireless charging, among other features.
Choosing the turbo petrol engine here doesn't just look luxurious; it feels so as well. The sport mode is a source of delight to many, as is hearing the engine’s growl. From daily drives and local commutes to long highway runs, this is the variant that makes you feel different.
When you talk about the Hyundai i20’s performance, you must understand that it was carefully made to match the way you drive. Let’s break it down quickly so it makes sense:
Engine | Power | Torque | Gearbox |
1.2-litre Petrol | 83 bhp | 114 Nm | Five-speed MT / CVT |
1.0-litre Turbo Petrol | 118 bhp | 172 Nm | Six-speed iMT / seven-speed DCT |
| Source: car&bike | |||
The moment you take the car out on the road, you begin to notice the difference in its driving character. The regular 1.2-litre petrol engine is calm and predictable. The Hyundai i20’s naturally aspirated petrol engine does not respond as quickly as the turbo variant, but once it settles in, it just pulls through effortlessly.
Push it a little harder on open stretches and you’ll notice how composed it remains. The steering feels precise, and the engine response stays consistent without feeling strained. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar rightly mentions, “It makes it so much peppy… in Sport mode everything changes.”
The i20 sets a high bar in performance, comfort, and balance — offering energy when you want it, and calm when you need it.
Limitations
- Brief turbo lag at very low rpm
- Seven-speed DCT feels hesitant in slow traffic
- Steering feedback isn’t sharp enough for hardcore enthusiasts
Read: 2020 Hyundai i20 Review
Pros
- Turbo engine makes daily driving exciting
- Cabin truly feels premium, not basic
- Tech features beat most rivals easily
- Ride comfort soothes city chaos
Cons
- High-end variants come at a premium price.
- Turbo lag annoys at low revs
- Some chrome detailing feels overdone
Verdict
The Hyundai i20 expert review makes it clear — this is a hatchback for someone who still enjoys driving but also wants comfort, technology, and everyday usability. The turbo petrol engine is genuinely fun to use. The cabin feels like a proper upgrade, and the ride quality keeps you relaxed even when roads aren’t perfect.
Put simply, the Hyundai i20 stands out because it makes everyday driving enjoyable without sacrificing comfort or practicality. Not just practical. Not just efficient. Enjoyable.
Yes, it costs more than some rivals. And yes, you could choose something more basic and save money. But the moment that digital cluster lights up and the turbo pulls strong past 2,000 rpm, you remember why you picked it. If you want a premium-feeling hatchback that adds energy to your daily commute, the Hyundai i20 delivers.

Even though the Baleno is sold only through the Nexa outlets, the hatch sells on average close to 15,000 units a month. That said, the benchmark in the segment has always been the Hyundai i20 with its sharp European looks and well made, well equipped package. And now, Hyundai has given the i20 a mid-life facelift with updated exterior bits, minor interior bits and some mechanical upgrades too. So does it help the Hyundai i20's continued benchmark domination of the segment? And can it now take the fight to the Maruti Suzuki Baleno in terms of sales figures too? Cyrus Dhabhar | Jun 7, 2018Hyundai i20 CVT Petrol Automatic ReviewThe Hyundai i20 CVT is available in two variants - the Magna and the Asta. Unlike the manual, which offers a higher, spec Asta (dual tone) and Asta (optional) variant, the CVT gets just the standard Asta, which is the top spec variant in its lineup. So what it looses out on as compared to the Asta(O) are a bunch of features that although aren't crucial, would have been nice to have. You don't get the projector headlamps with integrated LED DRLs for starters. Instead, you get a set of daytime running lights integrated into the bumper just below the fog lamps. And in my opinion, these look fantastic! You do however miss out on auto headlamps and cornering lights. You also get dark grey 15-inch wheels as compared to the larger 16-inch diamond cut wheels that are available on the optional package. You also loose out on the likes of a whole bunch of interior features like the leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, and the smart keyless entry with a start-stop button.1 min read
