Widely acknowledged as India's poster boy of modern classic motorcycles, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 satiates buyers wanting a larger capacity, twin-cylinder engine, and who do not want to spend a premium on imported brands. Royal Enfield also changed its approach with this machine to achieve that outcome, moving away from the age-old thumper character to deliver something far more revolutionary.

The bike’s classic roadster styling and upright ergonomics are its two most talked-about factors. Whether you are cutting through heavy city traffic or planning that long weekend getaway, this one’s got the character for both. Recent updates, such as fresh paint schemes, an LED headlamp, and the much-awaited alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, have taken the bike to another level. It mostly challenges retro alternatives like the BSA Gold Star 650, recently launched RE Classic 650, and performance-oriented machines like the KTM 390 Duke.
Kingshuk Dutta previously tested the BS6 version. Car&bike’s motoring journalist, Preetam Bora, also reviewed its capabilities on Indian roads. We have compiled their insights into this review, so that you can decide whether you should say 'yes' to this Royal Enfield offering or not.
What truly defines the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650’s core experience is that smooth 648 cc parallel-twin engine. Developed with inputs from the UK Technology Centre, this air-oil-cooled unit is next-level refined, and the 270-degree firing interval has a nice burbly rumble that suits its exhaust note.
The engine’s delivery is seamless. Expect more than 80 per cent of the maximum torque at just 2,500 rpm. Such tractability means you do not have to keep engaging the gearbox too much, which also, by the way, is paired with an assist and slipper clutch now.
Preetam states,
“I love the sound, it's not too loud to create a racket, and you can hear the soft, bassy burble when you are riding within the city, cruising down a highway and when downshifting to overtake slow-moving traffic.”

City Riding Experience
We found the bike’s ride quality convenient, even though it sits at an overall kerb weight of 218 kg. The wide handlebar allows for a comfortable riding position, and the engine has strong low-end torque, meaning you can pull the motorcycle at 30 kmph while in the third gear, without any engine knocking. However, we did feel the engine’s heat in heavy traffic, but not unbearable.

Highway Riding Experience
The motorcycle hits its stride once you enter the long horizon. Relax while you are sitting atop the bike while it cruises at 100 kmph, and the engine hovers around 4,000 rpm. Overtaking slower traffic only requires you to twist the throttle once, thereby eliminating frequent downshifts. This bike’s a champion for long-distance touring with its top speed clocking out at 169 kmph.
According to Preetam’s experience,
“The throttle response is spot on; there's no off-on jerky throttle, the kind you'd experience on bigger parallel-twin engines, or even Royal Enfield's very own Classic 500.”
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 intentionally looks old-school, and this design actually works well. It has a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a flat bench seat, and wide handlebars that are reminiscent of a traditional 1960s roadster. It also stays away from being overly aggressive or unnecessarily bulky.
Instead, the motorcycle sticks to a balanced footprint. Recent updates from the manufacturer now offer blacked-out engine casings and alloy wheels for some of this bike’s variants. Meanwhile, its 804 mm seat height is quite accessible for most riders, and even though the kerb weight goes over 200 kg, the weight distribution is surprisingly well done.

If ridden sensibly, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 manages some respectable figures, but do note that large-capacity motorcycles are not meant to give you exceptional fuel efficiency anyway.
In stop-and-go city traffic, we found it naturally eating up more fuel. However, in the touring space, and while keeping the bike between 80 and 90 kmph, the numbers improve a little. Expect to complete around 300 km with its 13.7-litre fuel tank in a single refill.

Purist by nature, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 makes sure that its modern additions do not dilute the classic roadster experience. Recent updates have delivered contemporary functions, but no complex electronics.

Instrumentation & Connectivity

The bike’s wide handlebar and upright seating position make it easily manageable inside cities. The light slip and assist clutch also help, while the turning radius is perfect for cutting through tight streets. Yes, while stationary, we felt its kerb weight on our hands, but that feeling immediately disappears once the motorcycle picks up speed.

Highway Stability
When we twisted the throttle, the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 stayed stubbornly planted to the tarmac. Understandable, as its substantial weight and long wheelbase ensure crosswinds and high speeds do not stand a chance in unsettling the chassis. No composure is lost at triple-digit speeds, either.
Kingshuk simplifies,

Suspension Behaviour
The bike has a 41 mm telescopic front fork and preload-adjustable twin gas-charged rear shocks. The suspension setup is soft, absorbing regular road imperfections well. But we found it underhanded around sharp mid-corner bumps.
Rider & Pillion Comfort
- The rider benefits from the motorcycle’s relaxed, upright posture with mid-set footpegs.
- The stock seat is flat and slightly soft; note that it may cause some discomfort during extended touring.
- Pillion comfort is adequate for city rides, but we cannot say much about longer highway trips since the rear seat is narrow.
Preetam also added,
“You can feel some minor buzz upwards of 5,000 rpm, but mind you, these aren't like the vibrations that you would normally associate with any Royal Enfield single.”
The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650’s variants differ mostly by paint schemes and wheel types. Every model has the same 648 cc parallel-twin engine and six-speed gearbox, so ultimately, the buying decision falls upon aesthetic preferences and tyre maintenance.

- Not recommended for those who loves long ride1.0STD BS VI [2020-2023](Petrol)Pros: Huge power delivery. Proudly own 650 twin under 4 lakhs. Less vibration than other RE Cons: very poor milage. Poor breaking doesn’t offer confidence to go beyond 80kmph. Poor service centres can’t address problems. Gearslips. Heating issue. Misfiring/ missing throttle. No tubeless tyres. Rusting. Poor fuel indicator If you take for long ride , remember no tubeless. No mechanic will help you if you goto remote area. I personally faced and had to toe around 1 km when back tyre Punchure, to fix the day I hated the bike. If cross 100 make sure everything clear ahead. Else you gonna hit. If you are in 6th hear suddenly you have to break due to hump, or any obstacles it is difficult due to full clutch. Often bike stops. One full clutch for one gear shift. - Fair enough to cruise at nominal speed4.0STD BS VI [2020-2023](Petrol)This could have been a perfect bike unless it was launched by RE. All the deficiencies that prevailing with RE you can experience. Unpleasant sounds from handle/ fork which service people can’t rectify on first service. Slip gears , miss firing, poor built quality is a big pain. Even though price is lesser compared to same specification of other makes, this is not very cheap (3.7L on road) . I am getting milage of 12 kmpl in bangalore traffic but 30 kmpl on highways with a speed of 80 kmph@ 3- 3.5k rpm which is a great satisfaction. Pick up is linear than aggressive and there is no traditional RE vibrations. The harder seat cause lot of pain for people weigh lot. Pulling is good but somehow wobble lot on higher speed.
