car&bike Expert Take
“The Skoda Kodiaq focuses on comfort, practicality, and a refined driving experience. With its smooth 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a feature-rich cabin, it works best as a premium family SUV for urban use. However, while it offers a three-row layout, the third row is best suited for children or short journeys, and it is not meant for serious off-road use.”

The Skoda Kodiaq has returned in its second-generation avatar, bringing a fresh design, integrated technology, and an updated cabin experience. Positioned as Skoda’s flagship SUV in India, it continues to focus on comfort, practicality, and everyday usability while offering a three-row seating layout for families. The SUV continues with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a DSG automatic gearbox and standard all-wheel drive.
We evaluated the new generation model and found that the updates go beyond just cosmetic changes. The SUV now follows Skoda’s ‘Modern Solid’ design language, with a new grille design and updated lighting elements. It is also longer than the previous generation, which contributes to better interior packaging and luggage space.

This Skoda Kodiaq expert review, conducted by auto journalist Seshan Vijayraghvan, walked us through the design changes, interior layout, and practicality features of the new Kodiaq in our last detailed YouTube video. Editor Shamz Raza Naqvi focused on the driving behaviour on the road in his written review. Their observations have been combined here to give a clearer picture of what the new Skoda Kodiaq offers as a premium family SUV.
The Skoda Kodiaq focuses more on smooth performance and relaxed driving rather than outright sportiness. It continues with a single turbo-petrol engine paired with an automatic gearbox and standard all-wheel drive.
Engine Option Tested
The following table lists the engine setup available in the Skoda Kodiaq:
Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission |
2.0-Litre Turbo-Petrol | 201 bhp | 320 Nm | DSG Automatic |
Driving Experience: Real World
City Driving
In city traffic, the Kodiaq feels easy to drive despite its size. We evaluated the steering at low speeds and found it to be light, which helps when manoeuvring through tight streets or parking in crowded spaces. The turbo-petrol engine also feels responsive in stop-and-go traffic, and the DSG gearbox shifts smoothly without noticeable lag.
Highway Driving
Out on the highway, the Kodiaq feels more at home. During our drive, we found that the engine builds speed effortlessly and reaches triple-digit speeds without strain. The SUV stays stable at higher speeds, and the power delivery remains smooth, making long journeys comfortable for both the driver and passengers.
DSG Performance
The DSG automatic gearbox plays a big role in the Kodiaq’s driving experience. We noticed that gear shifts are quick and seamless, which adds to the SUV’s refined character. Drivers also get paddle shifters, allowing more control when needed.
Shamz Raza Naqvi writes,
“The DSG gearbox performs smoothly with virtually no lag, delivering the kind of response enthusiasts appreciate.”
The second-generation Skoda Kodiaq gets an all-new design with a new grille and a horizontal LED light strip. The updated styling brings it closer to Skoda’s current lineup, and the SUV is now 59 mm longer than the previous generation. The design is also more rounded than before, which makes the Kodiaq appear slightly lower and sleeker despite its large size.
Here’s a summary of the car’s most noticeable elements:
- The SUV follows Skoda’s ‘Modern Solid’ design language with cleaner lines and a more contemporary appearance.
- Both variants get 18-inch alloy wheels, though the design pattern differs between the Sportline and L&K variants.
- The Sportline variant uses darker styling elements for a sportier look.
- The L&K version adds chrome accents and the illuminated grille strip for a more premium feel.
- The overall design looks bold and premium without appearing overly muscular or aggressive.
Skoda Kodiaq vs Toyota Fortuner vs Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line
| Dimension | Skoda Kodiaq | Toyota Fortuner | Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line |
| Length | 4,699 mm | 4,795 mm | 4,539 mm |
| Width | 1,882 mm | 1,855 mm | 1,859 mm |
| Height | 1,685 mm | 1,835 mm | 1,656 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,791 mm | 2,745 mm | 2,680 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 192 mm | 225 mm | 176 mm |
| Kerb Weight | 1,779 kg | 2,095 kg | 1,758 kg |
The Kodiaq is lighter and lower than the Toyota Fortuner, which partly explains its more urban and sophisticated stance. It is also slightly larger than the Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line in length and wheelbase, helping it accommodate a third row. But compared to the Fortuner, the Kodiaq sits lower and offers less ground clearance, which shows that it prioritises on-road comfort and family usability over hardcore off-road ability.

The second-generation Skoda Kodiaq arrives with a noticeably updated design that feels more modern and aligned with Skoda’s current lineup. We evaluated the SUV closely and found that the design focuses more on clean lines and sophistication rather than an aggressive, muscular look.
As Seshan notes:
“The updated design language brings the Kodiaq more in line with Skoda’s current lineup”
Front Profile
Up front, the Kodiaq adopts Skoda’s newer design direction with a large grille and sleek LED headlamps. The grille on the higher-spec L&K variant also features a horizontal LED light strip, which gives the SUV a distinctive look at night.
Side Profile
From the side, the Kodiaq appears slightly longer than before, as it is now 59 mm longer than the previous generation. Both variants ride on 18-inch alloy wheels, though the designs differ depending on the variant. The more rounded styling helps the SUV look a bit lower and sleeker despite its size.
Rear Profile
The rear carries forward the clean and modern styling theme. The connected LED tail lamps and sharp bumper design give the SUV a neat finish while maintaining the strong road presence expected from a large three-row SUV.

The cabin of the second-generation Skoda Kodiaq feels premium and well put together. Skoda has improved the materials and layout, and we noticed the neatly designed dashboard with contrast stitching and textured panels. The L&K variant gets brown leather seats, while the Sportline features a sportier Alcantara upholstery. Overall, the cabin feels solid, with the typical European build quality you expect from Skoda.
Cabin Layout and Quality
At the centre of the dashboard is a new 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, paired with a fully digital driver’s instrument cluster. Skoda has also introduced its new Smart Dials, which combine rotary knobs with small displays to control functions like climate control and seat ventilation. The centre console has multiple storage spaces along with a wireless charging pad, and the gear selector has been moved to the steering column to free up space.

Shamz highlights the technology inside the cabin,
“The cabin features a 13-inch infotainment screen along with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.”
Seating Comfort
First Row
The front seats are designed with long-distance comfort in mind. We found the seat cushioning supportive with good side bolstering and under-thigh support. In the L&K variant, the seats also come with ventilation, heating, and a massage function, which adds an extra layer of comfort during long drives.
Second Row
Rear seat comfort has improved with better bolstering
and good under-thigh support. The second row also benefits from three-zone climate control, allowing rear passengers to set their own temperature. Skoda’s “Simply Clever” touches continue here as well, including a removable centre tray that can provide extra storage or be taken out to make space for a third passenger.
Third Row
The Kodiaq continues to offer a three-row, seven-seat layout, but we found the third row best suited for children or short journeys. Adults may find space limited, especially on longer drives. However, it still adds flexibility for families who occasionally need those extra seats.

Skoda has positioned the second-generation Kodiaq in the premium three-row SUV space. The lineup begins with the Lounge variant, which already gets the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and all-wheel drive setup. Moving up to the Sportline and Selection L&K trims adds sportier styling, upgraded interiors, and more comfort features. Below is the Skoda Kodiaq’s variant-wise pricing in India:
Skoda Kodiaq Ex-Showroom Prices in India
| Variant | Powertrain | Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
| Lounge | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol AT, AWD | Rs. 39.99 Lakh |
| Sportline | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol AT, AWD | Rs. 43.76 Lakh |
| Selection L&K | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol AT, AWD | Rs. 45.96 Lakh |
Fuel efficiency is not always the primary focus for large family SUVs, but it still matters when the vehicle is expected to handle daily city commutes as well as long highway drives. The Skoda Kodiaq uses a single 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a DSG automatic gearbox and standard all-wheel drive, which aims to balance performance with reasonable efficiency.
Here’s what we found out from the available data and driving impressions:
- Skoda claims a fuel efficiency figure of 14.86 kmpl for the Kodiaq.
- The DSG automatic gearbox helps keep the engine in the right gear, which contributes to smoother and more efficient driving.
- The SUV feels most comfortable during relaxed highway cruising, where the engine operates smoothly without needing to be pushed hard.
The following table outlines the claimed mileage figure for the Skoda Kodiaq.
| Engine & Transmission | Claimed Mileage | Highway Mileage | City Mileage |
| 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol DSG AWD | 14.86 kmpl | 13–14 kmpl | 9–11 kmpl |
The Skoda Kodiaq comes with a comprehensive set of safety features designed to protect occupants and make driving easier.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
The SUV comes fitted with nine airbags as standard, which provides protection for occupants across all three rows. It also includes ISOFIX child seat mounts for securely installing child seats. We found that it secured a five-star rating in the stringent Euro NCAP tests. This reflects the strength of its safety structure and overall protection levels.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
Active safety equipment is extensive as well. The Kodiaq includes systems such as hill hold and tyre pressure monitoring to support everyday driving. Driver attention and drowsiness monitoring are also part of the package, helping detect fatigue during long journeys. Parking assistance is handled by a 360-degree camera along with front and rear parking sensors, making it easier to manoeuvre a large SUV in tight spaces.
Safety Verdict
Based on the equipment list and performance during the crash test, we found that the Kodiaq offers strong safety credentials for a family SUV with nine airbags as standard and a five-star Euro NCAP rating. The safety package is complete and well-suited for a car that is designed to carry the whole family.

The second-generation Skoda Kodiaq brings a modern and practical cabin that blends physical controls with new digital tech. Most features are easy to access, while still offering a premium experience for both the driver and passengers.
Infotainment and Interface
- The centre of the dashboard is dominated by a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
- It supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing seamless smartphone connectivity.
- A fully digital driver’s instrument cluster displays key driving information clearly.
- Skoda has introduced new ‘Smart Dials’, which combine rotary controls with small displays for functions like climate control and seat ventilation.
- The 13-speaker Canton sound system delivers impressive audio quality throughout the cabin.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
- The Kodiaq’s centre console offers multiple storage areas along with a wireless charging pad.
- The gear selector has now been moved to the steering column, freeing up space in the centre console.
- The L&K variant gets brown leather seats with ventilation, heating, and a massage function.
- Rear passengers also get their own temperature settings through three-zone climate control.
- Skoda continues to offer several ‘Simply Clever’ storage solutions around the cabin.

The Skoda Kodiaq offers a flexible cargo area that changes depending on how many seats are in use.
- With all three rows up, the SUV offers 281 litres of boot space.
- This is enough for smaller bags or everyday items.
Folding the third row increases the available capacity to 786 litres. - We found that this space can easily accommodate multiple suitcases for longer trips.
- If you fold the second row as well, the cargo area expands to nearly 1,970 litres.
- This creates a large, flat space that can carry bulky luggage or household items.
From what we evaluated, we found that the Kodiaq prioritises comfort and everyday usability over outright sportiness.
City Driving
Driving the Kodiaq through daily traffic feels easy, and this is due to its light steering. Despite being a large SUV, it does not feel intimidating in tight city situations. We found that the suspension handles potholes, rough patches, and speed breakers comfortably without sending harsh jolts into the cabin. The DSG gearbox also behaves smoothly in stop-and-go traffic.
Highway Driving
On highways, the Kodiaq feels most at home. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivers strong performance, and reaching triple-digit speeds happens without much effort. We noticed that the SUV stays planted at higher speeds, and the all-wheel-drive system adds confidence, especially on wet roads or uneven surfaces. The steering also gains weight as speeds increase, helping the driver feel more connected while cruising.
Shamz Raza Naqvi observes,
“The Kodiaq offers a cushioned ride and feels well suited for relaxed driving.”

Skoda offers the second-generation Kodiaq in three trims, each aimed at slightly different buyers. All variants use the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with a DSG automatic gearbox and standard all-wheel drive.
- Lounge: This is the base version and comes in a five-seat layout with fabric interiors.
- Sportline: This trim adds a sportier look with blacked-out styling and Alcantara upholstery.
- Selection L&K: The top variant brings more luxury with brown leather seats, ventilation, heating, and a massage function.
Here’s a quick look at what each Kodiaq variant offers:
Variant | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
Lounge | LED lighting, 18-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone connectivity, electric tailgate | Buyers who want a premium five-seat SUV with core features |
Sportline | Blacked-out styling, Alcantara upholstery, 13-inch infotainment, 13-speaker Canton audio | Buyers who prefer a sportier look and feel |
Selection L&K | Ventilated, heated and massage front seats, chrome accents, full feature list including 360-degree camera | Families seeking maximum comfort and features |
The Essentials That You Don't Get
- No diesel engine option
- No manual gearbox option
- No advanced autonomous driving assistance features
Choosing the right Skoda Kodiaq variant mainly depends on whether you want a sportier look or a more feature-packed cabin. We evaluated the lineup and found that all variants share the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, DSG gearbox, and all-wheel drive system.

Best for Sporty Styling: Sportline
If you like a sportier look, the Sportline is the one to pick. It gets Alcantara upholstery and blacked-out styling elements, along with paddle shifters for a more engaging drive.
Best for Comfort: Selection L&K
If comfort and luxury matter more, the Selection L&K is the better choice. It adds brown leather seats along with ventilation, heating, and a massage function for the front seats.
Best Value Overall: Lounge
On a tighter budget, the Lounge still offers the essentials. You get the same turbo-petrol engine, all-wheel drive system, and key features like LED lighting and wireless smartphone connectivity.
The premium three-row SUV segment in India is highly competitive, and the Skoda Kodiaq sits right in the middle of it. Rivals like the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster focus more on rugged appeal and off-road strength, while the Volkswagen Tiguan offers a more performance-oriented alternative.
We evaluated how the Kodiaq stacks up and found its strengths lie in comfort, premium cabin quality, and family practicality. Take a look at how it compares with its key rivals.
Model | Engine Options | Mileage (Claimed) | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
Skoda Kodiaq | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 14.86 kmpl | Premium cabin, balanced ride and handling | Rs. 39.99 – Rs. 45.96 Lakh |
Toyota Fortuner | 2.7-Litre Petrol / 2.8-Litre Diesel | Around 11 kmpl | Strong road presence, off-road capability | Rs. 34.16 – Rs. 49.59 Lakh |
Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line | 2.0-Litre Turbo Petrol | 12.58 kmpl | Performance-oriented European SUV | Rs. 45.73 Lakh |
Which Premium SUV Should You Choose?
- Choose the Skoda Kodiaq if you want a comfortable, tech-loaded SUV that focuses on family practicality and premium cabin quality.
- Choose the Toyota Fortuner if you want a more rugged SUV with stronger off-road credentials.
- Choose the MG Gloster if you want a large SUV packed with technology and safety features.

The ride quality also stands out, as the suspension comfortably absorbs rough roads while keeping passengers relaxed.
Inside, the cabin feels modern and well-equipped with a 13-inch touchscreen, digital driver’s display, Smart Dials, and a 13-speaker Canton sound system. Rear passengers benefit from good seat support and their own climate controls, while Skoda’s ‘Simply Clever’ storage solutions add everyday practicality. The Kodiaq’s overall balance of comfort, features, and practicality makes it a strong option for buyers looking for a premium three-row family SUV.

- Excellent car compared to the competition5.0Scout(Diesel)I've 2021 model of Kodiaq however it's none of the listed models here. It's a European SEL varient TSI 1.5 automatic DSG petrol. I'm not sure if this model is in India yet. Since I drive mainly in the London, car has enough power. It's snappy , quiet and quick specially on motorways. Interior is superb and tons of features. No noise in the cabin. Automatic heated seats and front glass are best! Infotainment is great . My only complaint is, I can't search navigation by postcode.for some reason. I chose Kodiaq over Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Merc GLC. All others offers the same but at much higher price. Kodiaq is fun and I'm enjoying every bit of it.By MukeshPosted on: Mar 22, 2021 12:46 PM11

Ameya Naik | Jan 18, 2019Skoda Kodiaq Laurin & Klement ReviewSkoda's flagship SUV - the Kodiaq - made its India debut in 2017 and since then has been one of the strong competitors in the full size SUV segment in the country. It has been a winner, when it went up against the new generation of the Honda CR-V. When we compared it with the Honda CR-V we said that the Kodiaq lacked a bit of flashiness; and that's because the CR-V brought a lot of bling to the table. But no matter, it looks like Skoda has heard what we said, because it decided that it needed to Jazz up the SUV and brought in the Laurin and Klement variant of the car. First introduced at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show , the SUV made its way to the country in November 2018 and since then, we've been waiting to get our hands on it1 min read
