car&bike Expert Take
“The Jeep Compass remains appealing to those who value driving dynamics, good build quality and true SUV capability over outright feature count. The addition of the 4x2 diesel automatic has widened its appeal, but it continues to be a premium proposition in its segment.”

When the Jeep Compass was launched in India in 2017, it immediately made a name for itself as a serious mid-size SUV with genuine off-road credentials. It was different from the typical front-wheel-drive crossovers as it offered a proper four-wheel-drive system and a powerful diesel engine. Over the years, however, increased pricing and limited drivetrain combinations have diminished accessibility quite a lot.
The 2024 update addresses one of the biggest concerns. The Compass now has a 4x2 diesel automatic starting from the Longitude variant, so the nine-speed automatic is more accessible than it used to be. Prices have also been cut across the range, which now starts at Rs. 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
This review is based on evaluation and road testing done by Seshan Vijayraghavan for car&bike review, including the new BlackShark edition. Mechanically speaking, the Compass is unchanged. It carries on with the same 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine delivering 168 bhp and 350 Nm with either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic. The petrol engine has been discontinued, so diesel is the only powertrain option now.

Seshan sums up the update clearly:
“The big change is accessibility. You can now have the diesel automatic without having to stretch to the top-spec 4x4. That makes a difference.”

Positioned against rivals like Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV700 (newer XUV 7XO), the Compass is more inclined towards driving feel than just sheer equipment count or brand identity. It is still one of the few SUVs in the segment to have a proper four-wheel-drive system.
The Compass continues with the same 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine. There are no changes to output figures, but the availability of the 4x2 diesel automatic changes how the SUV functions in daily use.
Engine Specifications
| Engine | Power | Torque | Transmission | Drivetrain |
| 2.0-litre Turbo Diesel | 168 bhp | 350 Nm | Six-speed manual / Nine-speed automatic | Front-wheel drive / Four-wheel drive |
Driving Experience: Real World
The Compass has always been characterised by torque delivery and composure from the chassis, more so than outright acceleration numbers.
Seshan observed during testing:
“The engine has great feel and willingness. It has enough grunt to occupy you without it having to be pushed hard.”
City Driving
In city conditions, the 2.0-litre diesel is muscular even at low revs. The strong mid-range torque means that the SUV can move smoothly in traffic without having to constantly change gears. The manual gearbox is precise, the nine-speed automatic is smooth rather than urgent. The automatic is a bit hesitant at lower speeds. Because it is tuned for efficiency, the shifts are not aggressive.
In fact, at times below 2,000 rpm, it may be perceived as relaxed rather than responsive. However, it never feels jerky. Once you get used to how it goes, it is easy to drive. The steering has good weighting, and visibility is in the decent range, although the thick A-pillar does create a noticeable blind spot.
Highway Driving
On the highway, the Compass feels steady and planted. It cruises between 80 and 120 kmph comfortably. The engine is still strong in the mid-range and overtakes are executed with confidence when planned properly.
Seshan pointed out:
“The automatic gearbox cannot be rushed. But once you get past the 2,500 rpm mark, there is an improvement in response and the drivetrain just feels more alive.”
At higher speeds, engine noise becomes more apparent, particularly under heavy throttle. The nine-speed automatic sometimes takes a while to downshift when quick overtakes are attempted at low rpm. Still, overall composure is one of the Compass' strengths.
Off-Road Driving
In four-wheel-drive form, the Compass is still one of the more capable SUVs in its class. The Selec-Terrain system has modes that include Auto, Snow and Sand, which enable the drivetrain to adapt to changing surfaces. Ground clearance, short overhangs and a solid chassis provide it with confidence on rough trails. It does not feel fragile while tackling rough terrain. Even in 4x2 form, suspension tuning means that it can handle broken surfaces without feeling unsettled.
The quality of the ride over rough patches is mature. Sharp bumps are absorbed well, although there is a little bit of noise from suspension over harsher impacts. Compared to many monocoque rivals, the Compass is more robust when driven off the tarmac.

The Jeep Compass has not undergone a dramatic visual overhaul for 2024. Instead, the update is all about minor improvements. The most noticeable change is the renewed grille with a new three-dimensional pattern. Body-coloured cladding has been introduced in place of some of the black elements, and alloy wheel designs have been updated for the different variants.
The new BlackShark edition is a more aggressive visual treatment. Chrome elements are replaced with gloss black accents, including the grille surrounds, roof, outside mirrors and badges. It lends a more cohesive and serious attitude to the Compass without changing its proportions.
Seshan remarked during the walkaround:
“Visually, it's more of a refresh than a reinvention. But the detailing does make it look sharper.”
Unlike some rivals that are based on dramatic creases and oversized lighting signature, the Compass has a restrained design. Its seven-slat grille, squared wheel arches and upright stance still define its identity.
Dimensions Comparison
| Dimension | Jeep Compass | Tata Harrier | Mahindra XUV700 |
| Length | 4,405 mm | 4,605 mm | 4,695 mm |
| Width | 1,818 mm | 1,922 mm | 1,890 mm |
| Height | 1,640 mm | 1,718 mm | 1,755 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,636 mm | 2,741 mm | 2,750 mm |
The Compass is shorter and slightly narrower than the Harrier as well as the XUV700. Its wheelbase is also shorter, which is partly the reason for the tighter rear seat space compared to these rivals. However, it is the relatively compact footprint that makes it easier to manoeuvre in city environments. Its proportions are more towards a traditional SUV stance than a stretched family car. The upright front end and muscular arches give it presence without appearing too large.

The exterior design still puts emphasis on solidity rather than visual drama.
Front Profile
The signature seven-slat grille is still at the centre of Compass' identity. In the updated version, it is given a more textured finish. LED headlamps with built-in daytime running lights are located on either side, and the bumper design differs slightly depending on the variant.
On higher trims, the addition of projector LED headlamps adds a more premium look. The BlackShark edition has chrome accents replaced with gloss black detailing, giving the front end a darker and more purposeful look. The bonnet is slightly raised and sculptured, which improves the SUV's stance. Unlike some of its competitors that are experimenting with split headlamp layouts, the Compass has a conventional, but cohesive design.
Side Profile
The Compass appears proportionate and balanced from the side. The cladding of the wheel arches and strong shoulder line reinforce its SUV character. Lower versions ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, and higher versions receive 18-inch dual-tone units.
The BlackShark edition is fitted with blacked-out 18-inch alloys. The line of the window is clean and upright. Large windows improve outward visibility, although you do have to watch when turning at junctions because of the thick A-pillar. Roof rails are standard on most of the trims and add to the SUV's stance.
Rear Profile
At the back, the Compass is kept clean. LED tail lamps have a basic horizontal design. The tailgate is wide and solid, which adds to the planted look of the vehicle. The bumper design is subtle and does not have much chrome or faux skid plates. On the BlackShark version, more dark detailing gives the rear aesthetics a further tone down.

Step into the Compass, and the focus switches to the materials, their quality and solidity.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The dashboard has a layered design with a large central touchscreen. Soft-touch materials are used liberally throughout the upper portions. Buttons and rotary controls have a substantial and well-damped feel.
Seshan noted during evaluation:
“The cabin is properly put together. The materials and the switchgear provide that feeling of solidity.”
The interior theme is different in each variant. The BlackShark edition takes an all-black treatment with red stitching and inserts. Other trims include lighter upholstery options, which help to make the cabin feel more open. The layout features a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.2-inch digital driver's display in higher variants. Physical buttons are still available for key functions, which is a good idea for usability while driving.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
The Compass has an eight-way powered driver's seat in higher trims, and they come with a memory function. The driving position is commanding and yet comfortable. Tilt and telescopic steering adjustment are standard. Seat cushioning finds a firm and supportive balance. Ventilated front seats are available on the higher models. The front sliding armrest promotes long-distance comfort. Visibility from the front is good all around, although there is a substantial blind spot, created by the broad A-pillar at certain angles.

Second Row
Rear seat space is good for two adults, but not class-leading. Shoulder room is somewhat limited when three seats are occupied. The central tunnel also reduces legroom for the middle passenger. Headroom is adequate for average height passengers, but taller passengers may find it tighter in comparison with larger rivals such as the XUV700.
Features That Improve Daily Use
Key functional highlights include:
- 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- 10.2-inch digital driver’s display
- Dual-zone automatic climate control
- Panoramic sunroof
- Wireless phone charging
- Cruise control
- Connected car technology
- A 360-degree camera on higher trims
- Auto-folding outside mirrors
Seshan observed:
“The screens are sharp and intuitive. It doesn't feel out of date in terms of technology.”
The Jeep Compass comes in six main variants: Sport, Longitude, Longitude Plus, Limited, BlackShark and Model S.
Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price |
Sport | 2.0-litre Diesel, six-speed manual | Rs. 20.49 lakh |
Longitude | 2.0-litre Diesel, six-speed manual/nine-speed automatic (4x2) | Rs. 23.99 lakh onwards (AT) |
Longitude Plus | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual/automatic | Rs. 25 lakh approx |
Limited | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual/automatic | Rs. 26 lakh approx |
BlackShark | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual/automatic | Rs. 26.49 lakh |
Model S | 2.0-litre Diesel, automatic (4x2 / 4x4) | Up to Rs. 32.07 lakh |
Note: Prices are ex-showroom, and they change by configuration.
The major change is accessibility. Earlier, the nine-speed automatic was limited to the top-spec 4x4. Now, buyers can choose from a 4x2 diesel automatic from the Longitude variant at Rs. 23.99 lakh. In this price bracket, the Compass is in competition with the Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV700. On paper, those rivals deliver more space and equipment for the money. However, the Compass continues to justify its premium through driving dynamics, brand identity and the availability of a proper four-wheel drive system.
Fuel efficiency has never been the Compass headon's strength. Its appeal is torque output and chassis stability. That said, the 2.0-litre diesel is competitive for its size.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
| Engine & Transmission | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | City Mileage (Real-World) | Highway Mileage (Real-World) |
| 2.0-litre Diesel Manual (4x2) | 17.1 kmpl | 11–13 kmpl | 14–16 kmpl |
| 2.0-litre Diesel Automatic (4x2) | 17.1 kmpl | 10–12 kmpl | 11–13 kmpl |
| 2.0-litre Diesel Automatic (4x4) | 14.9 kmpl | 9–11 kmpl | 11–12 kmpl |
In city driving, the automatic variant returns around 10 to 12 kmpl depending on the traffic conditions. The nine-speed gearbox is tuned for efficiency, but the weight of the SUV and the torque output mean that consumption is higher than that of smaller crossovers.
On highways, constant cruising between 80 and 100 kmph gives the best numbers. The manual variant is usually a bit more efficient than the automatic. The 4x4 version understandably uses more fuel as a result of drivetrain losses and more weight.

Compared to the likes of the Harrier and XUV700 diesel automatics, the Compass puts up similar numbers in the real world. It is neither class-leading nor inefficient. It is still acceptable for a 2.0-litre diesel SUV in this segment.
The Compass has a good safety package, but does not currently have advanced driver assistance systems.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
Six airbags are available from the Limited variant onwards, while the lower trims are available with dual front airbags. The body structure feels robust, and the doors shut with a reassuringly heavy weight. The previous European-spec Compass was awarded a five-star rating by Euro NCAP in 2017. Bharat NCAP has not yet tested the current India-spec model. The seating position and solid chassis help to give a sense of security. Moreover, ISOFIX child seat mounting, seatbelt reminders and tyre pressure monitoring system are standard.
Seshan noted during evaluation:
“The Compass feels solid. Even the way the doors shut gives you that confidence.”
However, it does not get ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control or autonomous emergency braking, which are now offered by competitors.
Active Safety and Stability Systems
Electronic Stability Control, traction control and hill start assist are available as standard throughout the range. The 4x4 variants have add on hill descent control that helps to move on steep slopes in a controlled way. ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution ensures stable braking under hard stops. The top-spec Model S does have a 360-degree camera, but the image quality is average compared to newer rivals. The Compass makes no attempt to overwhelm with electronic aids.
Technology in the Compass is about integration and
usability, not novelty.
Infotainment and Interface
Higher variants come with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interface is fast to respond, and the graphics are sharp. The 10.2-inch digital driver's display has several layouts, such as analogue-style dials or a full digital display. It can show trip information, fuel economy, navigation prompts and vehicle information. The highest trim of the Model S comes with a nine-speaker Alpine sound system. Audio clarity is quite good, even at higher volumes.
Seshan observed:
“The screens have a modern feel and response. It doesn't feel like a system that's outdated at all.”

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard starting from the mid-level variants. A panoramic sunroof adds to the feeling of space. Front seats are ventilated in higher trims, and both driver and co-driver receive eight-way power adjustment in the top models. Wireless phone charging, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming inside mirror are included depending on the variant. While there is no shortage of features in the Compass, it doesn't lead the segment in sheer number of features.
Jeep claims to have a boot capacity of 408 litres. The loading lip is rather high, which means that lifting heavier luggage takes some effort. However, inside, the boot is wide and usable. The shape allows accommodation of one large suitcase, one medium suitcase and smaller soft bags.
The rear seats split 60:40. When folded up, the load floor does not lie completely flat, but space is increased considerably for larger cargo. The powered tailgate, available on higher trims, is an improvement in the daily convenience aspects. Overall, the Compass provides enough boot space for family travel, but it is not the largest in the segment.
The Compass is based on a monocoque platform, but the tuning reflects the traditional SUV character of Jeep. Suspension is independent at both ends, and in 4x4 form, it has the benefit of additional drivetrain hardware that helps traction. The overall setup is mature. It is not soft or floaty, and is not too stiff.
City Driving
In urban conditions, the Compass feels manageable in spite of its size. The steering is well-weighted and predictable. It is not too light, but it is not cumbersome either. The 2.0-litre diesel's powerful low and mid-range torque ensures that the SUV moves easily in traffic. The nine-speed automatic is smooth through stop-start situations, though at very low speeds, it can be a bit indecisive as it shifts through gears.
Ride quality over potholes and broken patches is composed. The suspension absorbs most of the imperfections without causing sharp jolts in the cabin. There is some firmness over sharper bumps, but it never unsettles.
Seshan noted during evaluation:
“It comes across planted even at low speeds. The suspension has that solid, European feel to it.”
Highway Driving
On highways, the Compass is in its own right. It is stable at triple digits and maintains composure at long distances. Body movements are under control, and lane changes feel confident.
We found that the balance of the chassis is outstanding. Even when going around sweeping corners, the body roll is contained, and the SUV feels secure. Compared to its rivals, such as the Harrier and XUV700, the Compass has sharper directional controls and a more connected steering feel.
The engine stays relaxed between 80 and 120 kmph. Quick overtakes need to be planned, more so in the automatic when at low rpm, because downshifts can take a moment if the engine is currently at a higher gear.
Off-Road Driving
The Compass has a proper four-wheel-drive system in the Model S variant. The Selec-Terrain system has modes like Auto, Snow and Sand, which adjust the throttle response and calibration of the traction control.
In rough terrain, the Compass feels really robust. Ground clearance and suspension articulation handle uneven ground confidently. Moreover, hill-descent control is helpful on steep descents in the 4x4 automatic version. Even the 4x2 version copes well with broken roads. The suspension nicely absorbs undulations without being string-like in the feel. While it is not a hardcore off-roader, it is still more capable than most front-wheel-drive crossovers in the segment.
The Jeep Compass is available in six models: Sport, Longitude, Longitude Plus, Limited, BlackShark and Model S. All variants are powered by the 2.0-litre diesel engine. The six-speed manual comes in 4x2, and the nine-speed automatic comes in 4x2 and 4x4, depending on the trim. The following is the structure of the range:
Variant | Engine & Gearbox | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
Sport | 2.0-litre Diesel, six-speed manual | LED headlamps, 8.4-inch infotainment, dual airbags, ESC | Buyers prioritising brand and build quality at the entry level |
Longitude | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual / nine-speed automatic (4x2) | Dual-zone climate control, cruise control, larger infotainment, alloy wheels | Buyers who want the new automatic option at a lower price |
Longitude Plus | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual/automatic | Panoramic sunroof, connected car tech, wireless charging | Buyers seeking added convenience features |
Limited | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual/automatic | 18-inch alloys, leatherette upholstery, powered driver seat | Buyers wanting a more premium cabin |
BlackShark | 2.0-litre Diesel, manual/automatic | Black exterior accents, red interior inserts | Buyers who prefer distinctive styling |
Model S | 2.0-litre Diesel, nine-speed automatic (4x2 / 4x4) | 4x4 option, 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, Alpine audio | Buyers wanting maximum capability and features |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get
Even in its higher trims, the Compass does not offer:
- Advanced driver assistance systems
- Adaptive cruise control
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Level two semi-autonomous features
The choice has less to do with engine configuration and more to do with how you are going to use the SUV.
Best for Everyday Automatic Use: Longitude AT (4x2)
This trim has the nine-speed automatic without forcing buyers to step up to the 4x4 Model S. It brings a good balance between price and practicality.
Best for Feature and Comfort Focus: Limited or BlackShark
If you are looking for powered seats, larger wheels and a more premium interior feel, then these trims make sense. The BlackShark sticks to a darker aesthetic without doing much to the mechanical experience.
Best for Capability and Full Specification: Model S 4x4
For buyers who really want to explore rough terrain, the 4x4 Model S is the one to look at. It adds hill-descent control, terrain modes and other safety equipment.

The Jeep Compass is in the mid-size SUV range, where buyers expect space, powerful engines and an extensive list of equipment. While it does provide true four-wheel-drive capability and good driving dynamics, rivals have better value propositions on paper.
The most direct alternatives are the Tata Harrier and the Mahindra XUV700. Some might also consider the Thar or Fortuner as rivals, but they sit in two different spectrums. Each has a different approach to the segment. The Harrier is focused on design and features. The XUV700 brings technology and space with it. The Thar caters to lifestyle enthusiasts, and the Fortuner is considered a rough and tough, reliable vehicle for touring. The Compass, meanwhile, is all about positioning itself around driving feel, build quality and brand character.
Here is how the Compass compares with the Harrier and the XUV700:
Model | Engine | Power / Torque | Key Value Proposition | Ex-Showroom Price Range |
Jeep Compass | 2.0-litre Diesel | 168 bhp / 350 Nm | Strong dynamics, 4x4 option, solid build | Rs. 20.49 – Rs. 32.07 lakh |
Tata Harrier | 2.0-litre Diesel | 168 bhp / 350 Nm | Modern design, larger cabin, feature-rich | Rs. 15 – Rs. 26 lakh approx |
Mahindra XUV700 | 2.0-litre Petrol / 2.2-litre Diesel | 197 bhp / 380 Nm (diesel) | Powerful engines, ADAS, seven-seater option | Rs. 14 – Rs. 26 lakh approx |
The Compass shares the same 2.0-litre diesel as the Harrier in terms of output figures, but the overall tuning and gearbox partnership is different. The XUV700 has more power and an optional seven-seater configuration, which expands the range for larger families.
- Choose the Jeep Compass if driving stability, steering feel and structural solidity are more important than advanced driver assistance features.
- Choose the Tata Harrier if rear seat space, contemporary styling and value-driven feature packaging are priorities.
- Choose the Mahindra XUV700 if you want to have stronger performance, ADAS technology, along with the flexibility of a seven-seater configuration.
Pros
- Strong road presence with classic Jeep styling
- Well-tuned chassis with controlled body movements
- Available four-wheel-drive system
- Solid cabin materials and switchgear
- Stable highway behaviour
Cons
- No petrol engine option
- No ADAS features
- Rear seat space trails larger rivals
- The automatic gearbox can feel relaxed at low speeds
- Premium pricing compared to competitors
Verdict
The Jeep Compass does not try to dominate the segment on paper specifications. It does not have the largest cabin, the most powerful engine or the longest feature list. What it does deliver instead is a cohesive driving experience as well as a solid chassis and brand identity. The latest model has the added benefit of accessibility with the 4x2 diesel automatic and revised prices. That change alone makes the Compass easier to think about than it was.
Seshan Vijayraghavan captures its character accurately:
“The Compass is like a proper SUV to drive. It may not lead on features, but the fundamentals are good.”
If your priority is the most space or the most advanced electronic systems, rivals may be appropriate for you. However, if you place a premium on being able to stay composed at speed, balanced handling and true off-road capability, then the Compass is still a credible choice in the mid-size SUV market.
Jeep Compass Mileage
Jeep Compass mileage is 15 to 17 KM/L as per ARAI The Automatic Diesel engine has a mileage of 17 KM/L. The Manual Diesel engine has a mileage of 17 KM/L.
| Fuel Type | Transmission | Mileage | City Mileage | Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel | Automatic | 17 KM/L | 15 KM/L | 18 KM/L |
| Diesel | Manual | 17 KM/L | 15 KM/L | 18 KM/L |
