The Lambretta line of scooters was initially manufactured in Milan, Italy by the Italian manufacturing company Innocenti. In India, Lambretta scooters has had a storied past, when the Automobile Products of India (API) started manufacturing the first scooters in India under the Lambretta brand from the 1950s. Scooters were initially assembled from Innocenti kits and sold under the Lambretta name and later rebranded as MAC and Lamby scooters during the 1970s in India. Declining sales due to competition and recession resulted in the Lambretta-origin scooters go out of production in the 1980s.The disinvestment in Scooters India is part of the government's plans of strategic stake sale in loss-making central public sector enterprises. Scooters India used to manufacture the popular Lambretta scooters in the 1970s.
