Mahindra Electric is witnessing a good demand for its electric vehicles in metro cities as well as in tier 1 and tier 2 cities.
Lithium Urban Technologies, one of India's largest electric vehicles fleet operators, has announced partnering with Wipro to offer employee transportation service to the tech giant's offices across the country. Lithium started servicing Wipro's Hyderabad campus in June 2018, and so far its electric cars have covered a cumulative distance of 40 lakh km and thus saving 800 metric ton (MT) of CO2e in a little over 1 year.
Blu Smart, India's first all-electric taxi service, plans to add 500 Mahindra eVerito electric sedans by April 2020. The start-up has flagged off the first 70 Mahindra eVerito across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
India's first all-electric cab services 'Blu-Smart' has been launched in Delhi-NCR. Gensol Mobility, part of the Gensol group, is the company behind Blu-Smart and has inducted only electric vehicles are part of its fleet for the national capital region. The service aims to provide a smart urban electric mobility option for consumers, according to the company. The new service comes as air pollution has been on alarming levels in Delhi, while the central government has been promoting electric vehicles for its employees and personnel. The company will be using Mahindra e-Verito cars as its electric cabs in Delhi-NCR and has partnered with Mahindra & Mahindra.
The Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance has signed an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for the deployment of 15 electric vehicles for their officers. The electric cars handed over by EESL to the Finance Ministry include the Mahindra e-Veritos. EESL also sources the Tata Tigor EVs that that are used in the government fleet. In addition to the 15 electric vehicles, the government also set-up 28 electric vehicle charging points that include 24 slow charging points and four fast charging points at the North Block. With 15 EVs in its fleet, the government said that the Department of Economic Affairs is expected to save 36,000 litres of fuel every year, and will reduce over 440 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd's (EESL) procurement of electric cars from Mahindra Electric and Tata Motors was seen as a big push towards electric mobility in India. The cars sourced were to be used by government officials in place of conventional vehicles. However, the move seems to have not gone down well with senior government officials, who have refused to use electric cars for daily use. According to a report in Live Mint, a government source who didn't wish to be named said that the senior officials have cited poor performance and low range of the electric vehicles, as one of the reasons to refuse using the electric cars.
The battery-powered cars have been modified to install a swivel out mechanism on the front co-passenger seat.
For the EESL order, Mahindra is looking at various cost reduction measures in order to be price competitive to supply electric cars.
Reports suggest that the Mahindra Verito EV and Mahindra Maxximo Electric LCV are likely to be launched in February 2016 at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo. Both vehicles will be based on the Mahindra E2o's powertrain.
