  • What's New on MG Hector Plus?

The MG Hector Plus is the extended three-row version of the 5-seater Hector compact SUV that was launched in India in 2019. The new Hector Plus, on the other hand, is a six-seater SUV that comes with captain seats in the middle row. MG Motor India offers the Hector Plus in four variants – Style, Super, Smart and Sharp, and the SUV has been launched at special introductory priced of Rs. 13.73 lakh to Rs. 18.68 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The prices will see an upward revision of Rs. 50,000 post August 13, 2020. In India, the MG Hector Plus competes with the likes of the Mahindra XUV500, and the upcoming Tata Gravitas.

The Hector Plus comes in six colour options - Candy White, Aurora Silver, Burgundy Red, Starry Black, Glaze Red, and an all-new Starry Sky Blue shade, exclusive to the Hector Plus SUV. The MG Hector Plus comes with an updated face, with no over the top chrome elements. Upfront, you have the all-black grille, flanked by new LED daytime running lamps, and a set of revised headlights with LED projector units and integrated turn indicators. The front bumper is a new body-coloured one and it also comes with a new faux skid plate.

The profile remains identical to the regular Hector, in fact, it even gets the same 17-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, which still look a tad too small on the SUV. The Hector Plus also gets silver roof rails, a shark-fin antenna, revised LED taillamps, and a new rear bumper with underbody cladding and a faux diffuser with chrome elements. In terms of dimensions, the new MG Hector Plus is longer by 65 mm at 4720 mm, allowing the carmaker to accommodate the third row. However, the company hasn't made any changes to the width and height of the SUV as they stand at 1,835 mm and 1,760 mm respectively. Also, the wheelbase remains untouched at 2,750 mm.

The basic design of the cabin is similar to the five-seater Hector, however, the Hector Plus comes with a few new additions as well. The dashboard and the centre console come with silver accents, along with new soft-touch leather panels that match the upholstery’s smoked sepia brown shade. The middle row gets captain seats with individual armrests, and the third row gets 50:50 folding seats. In terms of features, the Hector Plus comes with ambient lighting, leather-wrapped steering wheel, an Infinity sound system, a panoramic sunroof, power driver seats, and rear AC vents for both second and third row. The new Hector Plus also comes with MG’s new smart swipe boot opening mechanism that allows you to open the tailgate by simple swiping your foot from under the rear bumper.

As for the safety features, the SUV comes with up to 6-airbags, ABS with EBD & Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), hill hold control, tyre pressure monitoring system, electric parking brake, rear disc brakes and more. The six-seater Hector Plus also gets 360-degree camera view and front parking sensors as segment-first features. There's also cornering front fog lamps, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, ISOFIX child seat anchors, in addition to speed warning alert.

Under the hood, the MG Hector Plus get the same three powertrain choices as the regular Hector - the 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre petrol hybrid, and the 2.0-litre diesel engine. The petrol and petrol-hybrid versions make 141 bhp and 250 Nm torque and come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and an optional DCT automatic (petrol only). The diesel version, on the other hand, makes 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque and gets the 6-speed manual gearbox as standard.

car&bike Expert Take

“The MG Hector Plus rebuilds its road presence in 2026 with a revamped design, 18-inch alloys, and most importantly, Level 2 ADAS. With a potent petrol engine on offer, you are getting an upmarket cabin that sits firmly in the three-row mid-size SUV segment.”

While the MG Hector Plus was originally introduced to provide seven-seater layouts over the standard six-seater variant, over the years, it became something much more than just filling the gaps. It turned into a luxurious vehicle that large families began to love, particularly for the features it offers and the comfort it provides.

The latest 2026 update keeps that hype alive by adding more tech and visual updates to the car. Today, you would be immediately able to pick it apart from the standard Hector, not just because it comes with more seats, but because it has a relatively more imposing face.

Siddharth Vinayak Patankar had tested out this car’s true capabilities and provided opinions about it; some of them have been shared here. Pitted against rivals like the Tata Safari and the Hyundai Alcazar, this review covers whether the British manufacturer’s offering is capable of challenging them with its substantial upgrades or not.

Currently, buyers can go for a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and while there was also a diesel variant, it is currently unavailable. That does not mean MG has phased it out completely; it looks set to return to the Indian market in mid-2026.

Having said that, the petrol engine is quite capable on its own, delivering 141 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque, figures that make it efficient for both city and highway stints.

Driving Experience: Real World

City Driving

In the city, the Hector Plus masks its large dimensions quite well. The light steering means cutting through tight traffic is easier than expected. The petrol-CVT combination is particularly smooth at such low speeds, ensuring you get a relaxed daily commute.

Highway Driving

Out on the open highway, the Hector Plus stays stable and planted, and earlier, the diesel engine used to be the champion here. In its absence, the petrol engine, while extremely smooth, requires you to work the CVT gearbox slightly harder for rapid acceleration.

Siddharth observes the car’s suspension setup,

“On the Plus, the ride quality over bad roads is actually pretty good.”

The MG Hector Plus is bold and sophisticated, showing that reflection off its paint, differentiating itself gracefully from the standard Hector. While the same core platform remains, MG gave the recent version a massive 'Aura-Hex' grille at the front, complemented by sleeker lighting elements.

Siddharth aptly puts it,

“The glossy black finish gives it a more imposing, high-end look.”

The MG Hector Plus is longer than the Tata Safari, the Mahindra XUV 7XO, and the Hyundai Alcazar, stretching up to 4,699 mm. Only Mahindra’s car comes close to it at 4,695 mm.

The exterior styling of the Hector Plus aims for an upscale, elegant look rather than a rugged off-roader aesthetic.

Front Profile

  • The expansive, bold grille has a diamond-like pattern that catches the light beautifully and dominates the car’s face.
  • For lighting, it sticks to the previous split-headlamp setup, with two-row LED daytime running lights at the top and the main LED projector headlamps positioned lower on the bumper.
  • The front bumper has some sharp aerodynamic edges, has room for LED fog lamps, and a neat lower air dam.

Side Profile

  • The latest model has 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels that fill the arches perfectly.
  • A strong character line runs from the front fenders to the tail lamps, giving the side a solid, stable appearance.

While reviewing the earlier model, Siddharth mentioned,

“It would have been a 'plus' to have 18-inch wheels.”

It looks like MG listened.

Rear Profile

  • Connected LED tail lamps cover the entire tailgate, and they look striking at night.
  • The car also gets an automatic powered tailgate with gesture control for hands-free convenience.
  • The rear bumper has some subtle chrome accents here and there, along with integrated reflectors.

Inside, it becomes evident that MG has prioritised luxury, space, and technology for the Hector Plus all at once.

Siddharth says,

“The cabin appears plush and the dash is dual-tone with a padded faux leather element added on to it.”

Cabin Layout and Quality

The interior is full of premium materials and soft-touch plastics. The centrepiece here is the massive 14-inch portrait-style touchscreen infotainment system that controls almost all cabin functions. The fully digital instrument cluster is crisp, providing all the necessary vehicle data right in front of the driver.

Seating Comfort

Front Row

The front seats are highly supportive; they offer good side bolstering and cushioning as well. Both the driver and co-passenger get powered seats, and significantly, they are ventilated, which is a massive boon for hot climates. The high seating position also offers commanding visibility over the hood.

Second Row

The second row is where the Hector Plus shines best. The seats slide and recline, and also have individual armrests. There is a lot of knee room and headroom within this space, something chauffeur-driven owners will obviously take into consideration.

Third Row

Accessing the third row requires folding and sliding the second-row seats. Once seated, the space is tight. However, dedicated AC vents with fan speed control and cup holders help alleviate claustrophobia.

Regarding the third-row space, Siddharth notes,

“So it is all right for little kids. And, adults can also sit here, but for very short distances only.”

Features That Improve Daily Use

  • 14-inch HD touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Level 2 ADAS on the high variants
  • Dual-pane panoramic sunroof
  • Infinity by Harman premium eight-speaker audio system
  • i-SMART connected car technology with 70+ voice commands
  • 360-degree HD parking camera
  • Wireless phone charging and ambient cabin lighting

MG has strategically positioned the Hector Plus, but the pricing remains a bit premium considering the exhaustive equipment list it offers. It directly locks horns with the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700, undercutting some of their top-tier trims while matching them on comfort and technology.

Fuel efficiency is not the strongest trait of the MG Hector Plus, especially considering its sheer size and heavy kerb weight. The petrol engine is very thirsty in dense city traffic, often dropping into single digits.

MG has substantially stepped up its safety game with the latest Hector Plus, making it one of the most reassuring vehicles for family buyers now, within its class.

Passive Safety and Crash Protection

The SUV has a high-strength steel body cage that can effectively dissipate crash energy through hot-stamped B-pillars and high-strength structure. It comes with six airbags on the higher variants, and ISOFIX child seat mounts, three-point seatbelts for all passengers, and robust door structures, keeping the car safe. While a localised Bharat NCAP rating is still not available, the vehicle's overall structural integrity does feel heavy and solid.

Active Safety and Stability Systems

The biggest safety highlight for the updated model is the inclusion of Level 2 ADAS. This advanced suite has Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and Intelligent Headlamp Control. Some other standard active safety features across the range are Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Hold Control, ABS with EBD, and all-four disc brakes, the last feature making sure the SUV stays composed under intense braking moments.

Safety Verdict

With its comprehensive active and passive safety net, the MG Hector Plus is no doubt a highly secure family SUV.

MG has stuffed the Hector Plus with a lot of technology, with most of the focus going towards screen real estate and daily comfort.

Infotainment and Interface

  • A massive 14-inch vertical touchscreen display sits at the dashboard, working like a command centre for the entire vehicle.
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto run cleanly without lag.
  • The eight-speaker Infinity audio system delivers deep, loud sound for long trips.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Features

  • The large panoramic sunroof adds immense light, making the middle row feel incredibly airy.
  • Front seats also get a highly requested ventilation feature, a blessing during harsh Indian summers.

Space in the back depends heavily on how many people you are carrying. With all three rows flipped up, the boot offers a modest 155 litres. Yes, it’s not enough; it can barely fit in a couple of soft duffel bags. However, drop the third row, and you suddenly unlock a huge 587 litres of luggage room. Therefore, family airport runs become extremely convenient. The loading lip is also at a fair height, and the smart proximity power tailgate means you do not have to struggle with a heavy door when your hands are full.

The Hector Plus feels soft and comfort-oriented, actively filtering out the road below rather than challenging its up-and-down gravel.

City Driving

At lower speeds, the suspension dampens vertical movement nicely and absorbs road imperfections including broken tarmac. The light steering wheel makes it surprisingly easy to park, despite the heavy body. The 1.5-litre petrol CVT moves off the line smoothly in traffic. However, you will feel the bulk of the vehicle if you try to dart through tight gaps.

Highway Driving

On the highway, the SUV does not wander off the straight line. But, body roll is noticeable if you push hard into sweeping curves, reminding you of its tall, beefy posture. Overtaking is a pretty reasonable task at high speeds.

MG splits the range logically, giving buyers a few clear options to match their budget. Although the ‘Style’ variant used to kick things off earlier, it seems like the Sharp Pro is now the car’s entry point.

The Essentials That You Don’t Get

  • A diesel automatic transmission
  • A 4x4 or AWD system
  • Genuine legroom for adults in the third row

Choosing the correct MG Hector Plus is simple; if you stick to the city often, the petrol variant’s got it all.

Best for Heavy City Traffic: Savvy Pro CVT

If you spend most of your day stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the CVT is good enough. It takes away the pain of clutch work, and the Savvy Pro trim brings the brilliant Level 2 ADAS features to keep you safe in chaotic conditions.

Best for Long Highway Hauls: Sharp Pro Manual

For a life out on the open road, the torquey diesel engine would have usually led this criterion, but since it doesn’t currently exist, the Sharp Pro variant’s manual transmission falls in line to lead your uninterrupted cruises.

Best for Overall: Savvy Pro CVT

Costliest among the lot, the Savvy Pro variant does not miss out on anything. It has all the niceties the brand can give you with this model.

The three-row SUV market is packed with tough rivals, and buyers often cross-shop this MG against established names that offer different strengths.

The XUV7XO, manufactured at home soil by Mahindra, has that typical Indian-brand allure, and it’s also the more robust vehicle. Alongside the Mahindra is another homegrown competitor, the Tata Safari, with the same uncompromised build-quality levels. Yes, the Hector Plus has some tough competition for itself, honestly.

Which Mid-Size Three-Row SUV Should You Choose?

  • Choose the MG Hector Plus if you prioritise a soft ride, massive touchscreens, and connected car features over outright handling.
  • Choose the Mahindra XUV 7X0 if you want the most powerful diesel engine in the class and excellent high-speed stability.
  • Choose the Tata Safari if you need a tough, imposing vehicle that easily absorbs terrible roads while carrying seven people.

Pros

  • Extremely plush cabin materials
  • Massive, clear 14-inch touchscreen
  • Soft suspension tuning for city bumps
  • Level 2 ADAS adds great safety

Cons

  • No diesel automatic option available
  • The third row is strictly for young kids
  • Body roll is obvious in corners
  • Petrol CVT fuel economy is poor

Verdict

The MG Hector Plus provides buyers with a feature-loaded, competitively quiet space that makes daily commutes and weekend trips much, much better. Things only got better with the latest edition, as now, there is a massive 14-inch screen dominating the dashboard, while Level 2 ADAS is finally active and available to protect your family.

But in a busy market, some of its shortcomings no doubt generate inevitable discussion, the most prominent of them being how cramped the third row is for tall adults. But if this row remains empty for you and your family most of the time, there’s no point in hesitating to check this vehicle out. It’s one beautiful British-branded, Chinese-engineered SUV that deserves your attention.

While the 2021 MG Hector looks stunning, it has several underlying flaws. For starters the vehicle performance in terms of power and reliability is absolutely poor. U can feel the engine pushing itself as it tries to go faster. Not to mention the delay between pressing the accelerator and actually accelerating. Secondly the milage of the car is simply horrendous. it only gives 5 TO 8 km/ltr Very Wrost Car

I purchased this car in March 2021. Before finalizing my decision, I was a bit apprehensive about the brand, its perfomance, its sales and after sales service. However, after reading multiple reviews and comparing features with cars in the similar category, I took the plunge. And I'm happy with my decision. The car performs very well on city as well as on highways. Due the second wave of the pandemic, I was unable to test the car on longer drives. But recently, I travelled from Mumbai to Pune. The engine performance is very good. I managed to get an average of 17.5 kmpl on both to and fro journey to Pune. On one leg of 84 kms, I got an average of 18.9 kmpl. The creature comforts are good. Overall, the performance so far is quite right.
