Tata Tiago Smart CNG

With more and more EVs now starting to enter the mass-market segments, the question that comes up is -- should you still consider a CNG car?

The use of Tata’s twin-cylinder technology and the addition of an AMT gearbox makes the Tiago a lot more convenient in the city.

To date, CNG cars have been offered in the same boring, unattractive colors with barely any features to begin with. Neither queuing up at CNG pumps behind commercial vehicles has helped with its market appeal. But Tata Motors is looking to change this perception and brings in its Tiago with a factory-fitted CNG kit, which is not only offered with multiple variants, and new colors, but also packs in several features that one would find in a top-spec version. We recently drove the newly launched Tata Tiago CNG, or the iCNG, as the company likes to call it, and came out quite surprised. Watch our review to find out more.

Tata Motors has got its very own performance sub-brand 'Jayem Tata Performance' or JTP, and with that come the company's very first performance skunkworks - the Tiago JTP and the Tigor JTP. So is the Tata Tiago JTP a true hot hatch or just some fancy paint and bumpers? Read on to know more.

When you compare prices outright, the Kwid AMT ranges from Rs 3.78-4.49 lakh(ex-showroom) and is available in four variants. The Tiago on the other hand is priced between Rs 4.79-5.39 lakh (ex-showroom) and is available only in two variants. The Tiago gets a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Revotron unit that makes 84 bhp and 114 Nm of torque - which when compared to the Kwid is 17 more horsepower and 23 more newton metres of torque. And the difference is almost immediately obvious. Under the bonnet, the Kwid gets a buzzy little 1-litre three cylinder motor that makes 67 bhp and 91 Nm. The gearbox is a 5-speed AMT unit that has been mated to a rather unconventional shifter knob instead of a normal lever between the front seats. While the Tiago offers a much better put together interior in terms of plastic quality, fit and finish and overall appeal, the Kwid offers features galore. The Tiago does not get a touchscreen infotainment system and navigation like the Kwid does and in 2017, features like those do actually make the difference for the average buyer. In terms of space though, both are about evenly matched.
