car&bike Expert Take

“The second-generation Innova Crysta arrived after Toyota carefully listened to customer feedback over a decade. It now bridges the gap between a traditional MPV and an SUV, offering a premium cabin, powerful diesel engine options, and a ride quality that prioritises passenger comfort over everything else.”

Toyota Innova Crysta Overview

It took Toyota nearly a decade to introduce the second generation of the Innova, a delay tactic the Japanese manufacturer intentionally implemented to understand evolving customer needs before launching another product. The result is an MPV laden with distinct styling cues and a design language that parted ways with its predecessor. Today, this Toyota Innova Crysta has a prominent bonnet and an aggressive front grille that gives it an SUV-like appearance, something Toyota wanted to provide for those favouring road presence as much as practicality.
Our car&bike team did a test-drive review of this car, and the video has been uploaded to our YouTube channel. We also did another video comparing the Innova Crysta to the now-discontinued Tata Hexa, and Toyota’s offering edged out in that review.
As of 2026, the Toyota Innova Crysta is a diesel-only, manual-transmission offering sitting alongside its newer sibling, the hybrid-focused Innova Hycross. We need to mention that the former is also getting discontinued by March 2027 due to stricter CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) emission norms. Regardless, the Crysta has already cemented itself as the Japanese brand’s rugged, ladder-frame workhorse, built to attract those who particularly prefer mechanical brilliance over electronic complexity.

The Toyota Innova Crysta’s main strength lies in its ability to carry heavy loads with stable highway cruising; it has never prioritised outright speed.

Engine Options Tested

Driving Experience: Real World

The Toyota Innova Crysta has been designed to deliver a comfortable commuting experience. No matter the terrain, we discovered in our test that the ride quality feels consistently in 'Comfort mode', absorbing bumps on pothole-ridden roads to keep passengers undisturbed.

2.4-Litre Diesel (Manual)

A five-speed manual gearbox helps in this engine’s transmission, catering to those who prefer traditional control. In our test ride, it lacked the urgency of the larger diesel variant, but it still delivers excellent low-end torque, even if the car is full of passengers.

2.8-Litre Diesel (Automatic - Discontinued)

The discontinued engine was paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox. It was more urgent than its manual counterpart and was vastly superior for overtaking on highways. Although this engine is no longer available in the current new car market.

Note: During the test-drive review, we had evaluated both engines since the 2.8-litre diesel variant was still in production. There was also a 2.7-litre petrol engine, but it was rare in the market.

As noted in our review, the Toyota Innova Crysta design shift was necessary to address evolving customer preferences that began favouring the road presence of an SUV over the traditional silhouette of a people mover. The Japanese brand took notes and delivered a "tough and sophisticated" design philosophy in response, giving the vehicle a more muscular and imposing stance without abandoning its core MPV practicality.
While the earlier iteration was a boxy MPV, the new model is more aerodynamic with a larger bonnet and sharper character lines across its profile. Toyota wanted its car to shed the “van” image and adopt an aggressive stance that today’s buyers prefer, without giving up the cabin volume that defined the Innova legacy.
Our car&bike review mentions this,

“The prominent bonnet and the aggressive front grille give it an SUV-like stance, which is exactly what Toyota aimed to provide for buyers looking for road presence alongside practicality.”

Toyota Innova Crysta vs Toyota Innova Hycross vs Mahindra XUV700 Dimensions

The Toyota Innova Crysta has some fierce rivals like the Toyota Innova Hycross and Mahindra XUV700:

When it comes to pure dimensions, the Crysta sits lower than its rivals, at the same height as Hycross, and the competitors are wider, but this makes manoeuvring the Crysta slightly easier.

The Toyota Innova Crysta exterior design has now made it more relevant against newer SUV offerings. The car feels better built than before, with a durable structure prioritising road-readiness.

Front Profile

The Crysta’s front profile features a chrome trapezoidal grill, a recent change done in the 2025 facelift. This "Piano Black" grille connects with the swept-back headlamps, creating a wide, authoritative front signature. The headlamps come in two options: halogen or LED projectors, depending on the variant (the top-spec ZX trim has the LED variant). The bumper has a sharper chin, fitted with fog lamps, elevating its athletic character even though it’s a commercial vehicle.

Side Profile

The side profile displays a window line featuring a unique design towards the rear; a "shark fin" cut in the glass area that breaks the visual monotony of the large doors. The flared wheel arches boast 16-17-inch alloy wheels (diamond-cut in the ZX trim). The large glasshouse, meanwhile, offers excellent visibility for all three rows. And finally, chrome door handles and substantial wing mirrors with integrated turn indicators complement the car’s look from this angle.

Rear Profile

The rear design prioritises width and stability, its most distinct feature being the "inverted L-shaped" tail lamps that extend well into the tailgate. On the higher trims, there is also a roof-mounted spoiler. The rear’s tailgate is massive and opens wide to provide a low loading lip, making luggage retrieval easy. The bumper is simple in design yet practical, equipped with features like integrated reflectors and parking sensors.

The Toyota Innova Crysta treats its owners to a "living room" experience rather than just a travel cabin. As highlighted in our video review, the cabin upgrade was necessary, moving away from utilitarian grey plastics to a premium layout that prioritises passenger comfort above all else.

Cabin Layout and Quality

The dashboard is driver-centric, featuring a single piece of sweeping silver ornamentation that runs across the width, integrating the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. On the top-spec ZX variant, you get premium wood-finish panels and leather upholstery that raise the cabin’s inner feel to near-luxury standards. The material quality feels durable, consistent with Toyota's reputation. Meanwhile, the instrument cluster contains a 3D design with a TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) that provides detailed driving data, such as fuel consumption and cruising range.

We mentioned in our car&bike review,

“The cabin of the Innova Crysta has been upgraded to offer a far more premium experience than before. The highlight, however, the second row.”

Seating and Comfort

The seating configuration is the true USP of the Toyota Innova Crysta.

Front Row

The driver’s seat in the ZX variant is eight-way electrically adjustable, allowing for the ideal driving position that one requires. The seats are large, supportive, and they minimise fatigue during cross-country drives.

Second Row

This is the "boss seat" of the vehicle. The captain seats (available in seven-seater variants) offer slide and recline functions, along with dedicated armrests. We also noticed the convenient lever on the front passenger seat that allows rear occupants to push it forward from the back, instantly creating limousine-like legroom.

As noted in our car&bike review,
“Sturdy, straight tables are provided for rear passengers, adding to the business-class feel.”

Third Row

For many brands, the third row is an afterthought. But Crysta offers genuine space instead, particularly for adults on short trips and children on long journeys.

Features That Improve Daily Use

The car boasts practical features designed for long-day commuting. The roof-mounted AC vents with digital display for the rear climate control evenly distribute cabin cooling, and storage is another strong point, with the cabin featuring cooled gloveboxes and smartphone holders.

In the MPV segment, the Toyota Innova Crysta is highly priced, but this is expected given the car’s unmatched resale value and durability. While the entry-level variants cater to fleet operators or budget-conscious families, the top-tier trims compete as premium SUVs. As of {currentyear}, the Crysta is primarily available as a diesel-manual offering in the Indian market, differentiating itself from the hybrid Innova Hycross.

ZX

Rs. 25.53 - 25.67 Lakh

Even though the Toyota Innova Crysta has a heavy ladder-frame chassis, it offers respectable fuel efficiency, largely due to the relaxed nature of its diesel engine. In our testing and analysis of ARAI figures, we found the manual transmission setup to be quite frugal for highway touring.

Toyota Innova Crysta Observed Fuel Efficiency & Range

During Testing

The observed mileage figures are as follows:

Powertrain

ARAI Mileage

City Mileage

Highway Mileage

2.4-Litre Turbocharged Diesel

10.12 - 15.6 kmpl

13.75 - 14.5 kmpl

13 - 14 kmpl

We mentioned in our review that the “Eco” and "Power" drive modes give different throttle responses, allowing drivers to extract better efficiency in city traffic. If driven steadily, real-world highway runs will definitely hit 15 kmpl.

The Toyota Innova Crysta has achieved a five-star safety rating in ASEAN NCAP crash tests.

Passive Safety and Crash Protection

One key safety feature included in the car is seven airbags in the top variants, including side and curtain airbags for extra protection. Notably, the lower GX variant has only three airbags as standard. There are also ISOFIX child seat mounts facilitating long-distance journeys for children.

Active Safety and Stability System in Toyota Innova Crysta

The vehicle has active safety systems, including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), standard across all four variants. Other features include an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), allowing for confident emergency braking on highways. Rear-parking sensors with a reverse camera help the Crysta fit into tight spaces, along with a speed alert system that alerts the driver when the car exceeds the speed limit.

Safety Verdict

The Toyota Innova Crysta is a reliable commuter, lauded for its strong structural integrity and high levels of passenger protection.

The Toyota Innova Crysta abandons technological gimmicks for practicality; it offers only the essential tech needed to improve the ownership experience.

Infotainment and Interface

At the centre of the dashboard is an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Not the largest in the segment by any mile, but it supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay like the rest, keeping your navigation and music needs seamlessly integrated. It is an intuitive system with large icons, highlighting Toyota’s intention to deliver usability over flair.

Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech

For the driver, the seat is adjustable in eight ways, making the driving experience effortless. The instrument cluster retains analogue dials for the speedometer and tachometer, flanking a TFT Multi-Information Display (MID) with crucial data such as fuel economy and cruising range. There is also blue ambient lighting in the cabin, while the automatic climate control with digital display keeps the cabin cool even in peak Indian summers.

For highway driving, the car provides a Smart Entry System with cruise control. The steering wheel contains wood-finish ornaments and is wrapped in high-quality leather. As for practicality, foldable seatback tables with cupholders are available for the second row, creating a mobile workspace.
Our video explicitly mentions this,
“The cabin is incredibly practical, featuring up to 20 bottle holders throughout the interior.”

Luggage management is one reason why the Toyota Innova Crysta is often preferred for long-distance touring or airport transfers. The vehicle offers approximately 300 litres of boot space with all three rows intact. However, due to the third-row seats’  50:50 split-fold functionality, a cavernous cargo area opens up, capable of swallowing multiple large suitcases. Furthermore, the one-touch tumble function for the second-row seats makes this space easily accessible. Whether you are moving house or heading for a weekend golf trip, the Crysta adapts to the load without complaint.

The Toyota Innova Crysta has a ladder-frame chassis that delivers uncompromised ruggedness rather than comfort. But Toyota did not leave out the second either; we found in our test that the suspension setup, featuring a double wishbone at the front and a four-link rear with coil springs, has been tuned explicitly for passenger comfort. It employs ‘Pitch and Bounce Control’, a system that mitigates the cabin’s vertical movement over pothole-ridden roads.
In urban environments, the hydraulic power steering feels heavy at crawling speeds compared to modern electric setups, but there are no compromises on the highway. The ride quality is compliant, and even though there is some noticeable body roll in corners due to its height and weight, the vehicle is planted and predictable. It actually encourages a relaxed driving style rather than aggressive corner cutting.
The car&bike review addresses this behaviour,

“The driving dynamics are tuned specifically for comfort. Regardless of the terrain, the ride quality consistently feels like it is in 'Comfort mode', absorbing undulations effectively to ensure passengers remain undisturbed.”

With the arrival of the Innova Hycross, the Japanese manufacturer now targets two particular audiences with its Toyota Innova Crysta: diesel loyalists and fleet operators. All four trims of the Crysta are fitted with a 2.4-litre diesel engine and a five-speed manual transmission.
Here are the four primary variants available in India:

Variant

Engine & Transmission

Key Features

Best Suited For

GX

2.4-Litre Diesel MT

16-inch Alloys, Manual AC, eight-inch Touchscreen

Budget buyers.

GX Plus

2.4-Litre Diesel MT

Diamond-cut Alloys, Wood Panel Finish, Rear Camera, Auto-Fold Mirrors

Private buyers who want better aesthetics.

VX

2.4-Litre Diesel MT

Automatic Climate Control, Ambient Lighting, Smart Entry

Families seeking modern comfort and safety.

ZX

2.4-Litre Diesel MT

Leather Seats, Eight-Way Driver Seat, Seven Airbags, Cruise Control

Chauffeur-driven owners.

The entry-level trim is surprisingly well-equipped for a base model, but the mid-spec variant bridges the gap for buyers who want a bit more flair without splashing as much as the VX demands. But the VX is where the "luxury" MPV experience begins. And finally, the fully loaded trim is purely designed for the chauffeur-driven owner.

The Essentials That You Don’t Get

  • Sunroof: Alternatives in this price bracket offer a sunroof like its sibling, the Hycross.
  • Wireless Charging: While wireless charging is now an industry norm, the car only provides it as an accessory.
  • Proper NVH: We noticed the Crysta has moderate NVH, and the Toyota brand should address this.

With only one powertrain option available, choosing the right Toyota Innova Crysta is simpler now, as your choice will be based on the trim.

For a Chauffeur-Driven

The ZX variant is the definitive choice for this. The captain seats in the second row are the industry benchmark for comfort.

As our expert review puts it,

“The best place to be in the Innova Crysta is undoubtedly the rear seat.”

For Large Families

We recommend the VX variant. It combines premium features like automatic climate control and ambient lighting with a slightly more accessible price point than the ZX.

For Fleet/Commercial Practicality

The GX variant remains the undisputed workhorse, offering the mechanical reliability of the Crysta platform without wearing out most of its components via heavy passenger use.

While the Toyota Innova Crysta technically competes with seven-seater SUVs, its true competition is its own sibling, the Toyota Innova Hycross. However, there are a few other rivals in the lineup as well.

  • Toyota Innova Hycross: The Hycross offers a monocoque chassis, a petrol-hybrid powertrain, and an automatic transmission, making it superior for city driving and fuel efficiency. But the Crysta is more durable with its ladder-frame chassis.
  • Mahindra XUV700: This is the tech-heavy alternative. For a similar price, the XUV700 offers ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, and a far more modern cabin. However, its third row cannot compare to the Crysta's genuinely usable rear seats.
  • Tata Safari: The Safari appeals to buyers wanting SUV styling and road presence. While the Hexa (the Safari's spiritual predecessor) was praised for its ride quality, the Crysta still wins on reliability and resale value.

As we stated,

“The Innova edges ahead in overall efficiency and offers a more responsive powertrain for highway overtaking.”

Which Seven-Seater Should You Choose?

  • Choose the Toyota Innova Crysta if you want a car that can survive an apocalypse and hold its value for a decade.
  • Choose the Toyota Innova Hycross if you will stick to city driving, and also prefer a silent car.
  • Choose the Mahindra XUV700 if you want the latest technology and sheer horsepower.

Pros

  • Unmatched ride comfort
  • Bulletproof reliability and a proven workhorse
  • Spacious third row for families with children
  • Highway stability at triple-digit speeds
  • Powerful diesel performance
  • An effective cooling system

Cons

  • No automatic transmission variant
  • Heavy steering dynamics at low speeds
  • Dated technology compared to rivals
  • Missing modern features like a sunroof

Verdict

In the Indian car market, the Toyota Innova Crysta remains a unique anomaly; it is still relevant simply because it does its core job better than anyone else. This MPV successfully bridges the gap between a traditional people-mover and an SUV, offering a premium cabin and a ride quality that prioritises passenger comfort above all else. However, the shift to a diesel-only manual lineup limits its appeal for urban dwellers seeking multiple options. It is also not the most technologically advanced car, nor is it the most feature-rich.
If you want the latest tech and hybrid efficiency, the Innova Hycross is better suited to today’s buyer needs. Also, with the Crysta set to discontinue by March 2027, purchasing one may feel like going for a last-gen car. But if you do not care about its looming expiry date, and still want it to carry seven people in absolute comfort, withstand the worst of Indian roads, and retain its value better than real estate, the Innova Crysta has no equal.
This is how our car&bike review video summarises,

“The best place to be in the Innova Crysta is undoubtedly the rear seat. The setup allows you to simply relax and enjoy the ride without needing anything else.”

I love my Crysta! It’s spacious, comfortable, and the diesel engine offers great performance. The car handles very well on highways, and the mileage is decent considering its size. A great choice for big families. It offers a comfortable ride, even on rough roads, and the cabin is well-insulated from outside noise. The infotainment system is easy to use, and the overall build quality is excellent.
