Yamaha YZF R2 Expert Reviews
car&bike Expert Take
“By giving a punchy 204 cc liquid-cooled motor in a light 149 kg chassis, Yamaha has launched a balanced supersport that feels lively on the racetrack, but doesn’t make your daily office commutes tiring either.”
Officially launched in India in 2026, the Yamaha YZF R2’s overall design is built around a high-tensile steel diamond frame. It comes in three model lines: the standard YZF R2, the YZF R2 with the QuickShifter and the race-inspired YZF R2M. And instead of reworking the existing motor, Yamaha made an all-new 204 cc four-valve engine for the R2, one that’s paired with ride-by-wire throttle control.
This motorcycle also gets other notable features like a bi-directional quickshifter and a five-inch colour TFT display. It steps directly into the market competition against some other existing middleweights like the KTM RC 200 and the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250. Our first road test of the Yamaha YZF R2 was carried out by Janak Sorap. Sharing his initial track and street impressions, he observed,
“The YZF-R2 carries the unmistakable visual identity of Yamaha's R-series, with much of its design and aerodynamic inspiration coming from the larger R9.”
Rather than using Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) similar to the R15, Yamaha’s engineers went for a larger 204 cc displacement with a double-overhead camshaft (DOHC) layout this time.

Engine & Transmission
This motorcycle runs on a 204 cc single-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled engine.
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Engine | 204 cc, Liquid-Cooled, Four-Valve, DOHC Single-Cylinder |
| Power | 26.1 bhp @ 10,000 rpm |
| Torque | 19.1 Nm @ 8,000 rpm |
| Transmission | Six-speed Manual with Slip-and-Assist Clutch |
| Quickshifter | Bi-directional (Standard on select trims and R2M) |
| Drivetrain | Chain Drive |
Key Takeaways
- Peak torque of 19.1 Nm arrives around 8,000 rpm.
- The 204 cc engine steps up in overall performance compared to the R15 V4.
- The bike has ride-by-wire throttle technology, with riding modes like Street, Sport and Rain.

City Riding Experience
- In Street mode, the throttle mapping is smooth and progressive.
- The clutch lever pull is remarkably light thanks to the assist-and-slipper mechanism.
- You can move along at 30 kmph in third gear without the engine stuttering.
- The YZF R2 is actually more livable inside the city than its aggressive track styling suggests.

Highway Riding Experience
- In Sport mode, the 204 cc motor unlocks its higher free-revving performance.
- The engine pulls smoothly from 5,000 rpm, but the real rush arrives past 7,500 rpm.
- The motorcycle cruises at 100 kmph in sixth gear with plenty of reserve power for overtakes.
- The bi-directional quickshifter provides immediate acceleration without any engine knocking.
Janak notes,
“Compared with the R15, the additional performance is immediately noticeable.”
The YZF R2 sticks to Yamaha’s R-Series design language. It looks a lot like the larger YZF R7 and YZF R9.
Proportions & Stance
| Dimension | Yamaha YZF R2 | KTM RC 200 | Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 1,980 mm | 1,977 mm | 2,010 mm |
| Width | 700 mm | 722 mm | 740 mm |
| Height | 1,140 mm | 1,098 mm | 1,035 mm |
| Seat Height | 810 mm | 835 mm | 800 mm |
| Wheelbase | 1,340 mm | 1,343 mm | 1,345 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 170 mm | 158 mm | 165 mm |
| Kerb Weight | 149 kg | 160 kg | 161 kg |
Key Takeaways
- At just 149 kg (150 kg for the R2M), it is a lot lighter than the RC 200 and Gixxer SF 250.
- The 810 mm seat height is noticeably more accessible than the tall 835 mm on the RC 200.

Build Quality & Materials
The motorcycle uses a 14 kg high-tensile steel diamond frame, which offers high stability during aggressive cornering. The fairing panels fit together with tight, uniform shut lines, and the paint quality on the metal fuel tank has a deep, glossy finish. The gold-finished upside-down front forks on select trims add a touch of premium superbike appeal. Handlebar switchgear, meanwhile, feels tactile, and there is no wiring clutter across the rider's cockpit.
Yamaha sells the motorcycle in five individual paint finishes.
Standard YZF R2
- Black Metallic X: A deep, understated gloss black finish.
- Dark Bluish Grey Metallic 8: A modern, industrial gunmetal grey scheme.
YZF R2 (Quick Shifter)
- Deep Purplish Blue Metallic Y: The signature Yamaha racing blue shade.
- Mat Yellowish White Pearl 1: A striking matte pearl white paint scheme with racing decals.
Flagship YZF R2M
- White Metallic C: An exclusive premium livery that mimics the flagship YZF R1M.

The outer look of this bike balances its aerodynamics with completely track-focused aesthetics.
Lighting & Front Identity
- LED turn indicators are mounted flush into the upper fairing edges.
- Up front, the YZF R2 has a central bi-functional LED projector headlamp.
- This headlamp is neatly surrounded by two sharp LED daytime running lights.
- The projector light produces a clean, wide beam with a sharp cut-off line across the road.

Side Profile & Rear Section
- From the side, the full fairing of the bike stands out the most.
- You will notice the deep indents on the motorcycle’s fuel tank.
- The tail section features some functional aerodynamic air tunnels.
- A vertical LED taillight sits comfortably between these useful aero ducts.

Practical Integration
- The clip-on handlebars create a sporty riding posture, but not as committed as the R15.
- Standard dual-channel ABS works alongside a large 282 mm front disc and 220 mm rear disc.
This motorcycle has three distinct variants, with prices ranging from Rs. 2.30 lakh to Rs. 2.53 lakh (ex-showroom).
Variant | Powertrain / Key Highlights | Ex-Showroom Price |
|---|---|---|
Yamaha YZF R2 Standard (STD) | 204 cc / 37 mm USD forks, five-inch TFT, traction control, ride modes | Rs. 2.30 Lakh |
Yamaha YZF R2 (Quick Shifter) | Adds bi-directional quickshifter, body-coloured alloy wheels | Rs. 2.39 Lakh |
Yamaha YZF R2M | Adds adjustable USD forks and rear shock, faux suede seat, R1M livery | Rs. 2.53 Lakh |
Fuel consumption on this bike depends directly on your riding style. In dense city traffic where you frequently have to work with lower gears, the motorcycle offers between 30 and 32 kmpl. Out on the open highway, holding a steady 85 to 90 kmph in sixth gear brings the fuel efficiency up closer to 37 kmpl. But the 12-litre fuel tank does return a realistic riding range of around 380 to 400 kilometres before you start looking for a petrol pump.

| Engine | ARAI-Certified Mileage | Real-World City Mileage | Real-World Highway Mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 204 cc Single-Cylinder | 37-38 kmpl | 30-32 kmpl | 35-37 kmpl |
Yamaha did not hold back on any electronic aids for the YZF R2.
Instrumentation & Connectivity
- The rider cockpit features a high-definition five-inch colour TFT display.
- This interface remains completely legible even during direct afternoon sunlight.
- You can use Bluetooth connectivity paired with the Yamaha Y-Connect application.
- Riders can toggle through display themes, view lap times and register a 0-100 kmph timer.
- A dedicated USB Type-C charging port is also available neatly on the left side of the fairing.

Practical Technology & Safety Integration
- You get Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) on this bike, which allows Street, Sport, and Rain modes.
- A Traction Control System (TCS) is there, present across all the variants.
- You also get Dual-Channel ABS.
By keeping the kerb weight at 149 kg, Yamaha has given the Indian market a nimble sportbike that feels light on its feet.
As Janak points out,
"The riding triangle is familiar if you have spent time on an R15, but Yamaha has made some subtle changes to make the R2 less committed."
City Handling
- Despite having a full front fairing, navigating tight city streets requires little effort.
- The clip-on handlebars are mounted comfortably above the top triple clamp.
- Your wrists do not take the full brunt of your upper-body weight here.
- Slow-speed direction changes are also instantaneous.

Highway Stability
- The 1,340 mm wheelbase provides rock-solid straight-line tracking on open stretches.
- The aerodynamic front cowl cuts through oncoming air efficiently.
- Passing intercity buses does not upset the bike’s stability at all.
- The 17-inch tyres can hold the motorcycle’s line securely.
At the same time, Janak points out one thing about the bike’s racetrack performance,
"The tyres currently feel like the biggest limitation. They don't provide the grip and confidence required to fully exploit what the chassis and braking hardware can offer, particularly on a racetrack."

Suspension Behaviour
- On smooth bypass stretches and fast corners, the damping is tight and composed.
- The YZF R2M gets preload-adjustable front forks and also a similar rear monoshock.
- But on typical broken city roads, the firm European-style damping becomes apparent.
Braking and Comfort
- The front brake lever provides a progressive bite.
- The 810 mm seat height features a narrow arch to perch upon.
- While the rider seat is supportive, the stepped pillion pad is narrow and high.
Picking the right YZF R2 comes down to how much you value clutchless shifting and track-level suspension tuning.
Best for Strict Budgets: Yamaha YZF R2 Standard (STD)
If you only want the 26.1 bhp DOHC engine, the five-inch colour TFT display, traction control and the lightweight chassis, the base variant at Rs. 2,30,500 is a practical entry point. You do miss out on the quickshifter, but the light assist-and-slipper clutch keeps manual gear shifts effortless.
Best for Daily Commuting & Weekend Blasts: Yamaha YZF R2 (Quick Shifter)
For just Rs. 9,000 more than the base model, you gain the third-generation bi-directional quickshifter and striking body-coloured alloy wheels in this variant. These features actually add extra convenience in city traffic and also make spirited riding far more engaging.
Best for Track Enthusiasts: Yamaha YZF R2M
If you regularly visit race tracks or want the absolute best hardware, you can go for the R2M. Its adjustable suspension lets you change the front and rear damping according to your weight and riding style, while the silver swingarm and faux suede seat make it feel like a scaled-down superbike.
The 200 cc-to-250 cc sportbike segment in India is crowded with many single-cylinder machines, with the Yamaha going up against Austrian aggression and Japanese tourers. Some names that stand out in this space are the KTM RC 200, Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 and Hero Karizma XMR 210.
Janak points out,
"These motorcycles are priced lower than the R2, while the latter's premium positioning comes from its lightweight construction, electronics and R-series hardware."
Model | Engine & Output | Key Hardware Highlights | Ex-Showroom Price |
|---|---|---|---|
204 cc, 26.1 bhp / 19.1 Nm | 149 kg kerb weight, five-inch TFT, bi-directional quickshifter | Rs. 2.31 - 2.53 Lakh | |
199.5 cc, 24.7 bhp / 19.2 Nm | WP Apex suspension, sharp track handling, tall seat | Rs. 2.18 Lakh | |
249 cc, 26.1 bhp / 22.2 Nm | Oil-cooled engine, relaxed clip-ons, plush highway ride | Rs. 1.93 - 2.06 Lakh | |
210 cc, 25.1 bhp / 20.4 Nm | Adjustable windscreen, liquid-cooled DOHC, steel trellis | Rs. 1.80 Lakh |
- Choose the Yamaha YZF R2 if you want the lightest, most agile supersport in the class, along with a bi-directional quickshifter and a high-resolution TFT display.
- Choose the KTM RC 200 if you want track-ready WP suspension hardware and can also live with a more committed riding posture.
- Choose the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 if you’d prefer a relaxed sports tourer with strong mid-range torque and a lower purchase price.
- Choose the Hero Karizma XMR 210 if you want comfortable sports-touring ergonomics and an adjustable windscreen on a lower budget.
Pros
- It’s new 204 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine gives you better mid-range than the R15 without the need to constantly shift gears to stay in the powerband.
- At just 149 kg, it is paired with an R-series derived chassis which delivers telepathic flickability.
- It offers great track ergonomics and gives you enough room to tuck elbows and knees into the sculpted fairing.
- There is a bi-directional quickshifter (mid/top trims), a crisp 5-inch full-colour TFT display with riding modes (Street, Sport, Rain) and traction control.
- The top-end R2 M variant has a fully adjustable suspension, reach-adjustable brake and clutch levers and Smart Key keyless ignition.
- It has an aggressive and unmistakable track-focused road stance.
Cons
- Both the front and rear tyres do not do justice to the R2 chassis' dynamic capabilities and offer limited grip.
- The steep price puts it in a bracket where larger displacement bikes are positioned.
Verdict
The Yamaha YZF-R2 is meant for those who have outgrown the limits of the R15, but don’t want to jump straight into twin-cylinder performance and running costs. With its 149 kg weight, about 26.1 bhp on tap, superb dynamics, and a bi-directional quickshifter, you will agree it has the core ingredients to attack a track or windy roads.
Car&Bike's Janak Sorap rode it on the Madras International Circuit and said, "After a brief experience with the YZF-R2, there is no doubt that the motorcycle has the ingredients to be an agile, quick and engaging machine. The lightweight chassis, responsive engine and R-series riding position work well together, while the electronics and equipment give it a suitably premium character."
However, its stock tyre setup does not offer confidence-inspiring braking abilities, and the aggressive price tag leaves much to be desired too. That said, swapping the factory fitted tyres with stickier ones will unlock the R2’s true potential and certainly appeal to prospective track enthusiasts.
YZF R2 Colour Options
Yamaha YZF R2 is available in 5 different colors namely Dark Bluish Gray, Hybrid Racing Blue, METALLIC BLACK, Grey Blue & white.
