- It brings in the classic/retro look with the MT-15 underpinnings.
- With an upright stance, the motorcycle features a round headlamp, teardrop tank, and a simple LCD tachometer.
- While it boasts a new style, it comes forth as a great package with the tried-and-tested formula from the MT-15.
- With a lighter weight, richer electronics, and a high-rev character, it will rival the Royal Enfield Hunter 350.

Features & Equipment
- As for the chassis, the XSR155 gets Yamaha’s Deltabox frame.
- This is supported by upside-down front forks and a linked-type monoshock.
- It boasts an aluminium swingarm to keep the weight in check.
- Offering a neutral riding triangle, the bike rides on seventeen-inch wheels.
- There are four colour options on offer such as Metallic Grey, Vivid Red, Greyish Green Metallic, and Metallic Blue.

- On the other hand, the Café Racer brings in sportier styling with a different seat.

Engine and Gearbox
- The new Yamaha XSR155 is powered by the familiar 155cc, liquid-cooled engine.
- This four-valve single-cylinder mill comes with Variable Valve Actuation.
- It produces 18.1bhp and 14.2Nm of torque.
- Mated to a six-speed gearbox, the bike features an assist-and-slipper clutch.

Yamaha XSR 155 Expert Reviews
car&bike Expert Take
“The Yamaha XSR 155 mixes some classic design elements with sharp and modern performance dynamics. It’s not just another lazy cruiser, because at its heart, the high-revving characteristics of its sporty siblings are quite evident.”
Yamaha XSR 155 Overview
For years, bike enthusiasts waited for a true retro-sport offering from the Japanese brand. To meet this expectation, the manufacturer debuted the XSR 155 in the international market years ago, and since then, the question has always been the same: when is this motorcycle coming to India? Finally, the wait is over because Yamaha India has finally made the bike available on showroom floors from 2025.
While the FZ-X tried to capture some amount of vintage ethos previously, it never quite made the cut. Now, its newer sibling takes things in a different direction by using the proven platform of the R15 and the MT-15 to deliver a far superior experience. You get the same performance as those two, but this one’s wrapped in a highly attractive retro-sporty appeal instead.
Janak Sorap took the bike out for a spin, giving us an extensive review of how it handles and performs in the real world. We have added his insights into this piece as well.
Powering the motorcycle is a liquid-cooled engine equipped with Variable Valve Actuation technology. It's the same rev-happy motor we know from the R15 and the MT-15, and it loves to be pushed hard. The harder you push this bike, the more rewarding the engine is. The best time spent atop this machine is in the upper half of the speedometer, where you get a solid punch after 7,000 rpm.
Janak observes,
“It feels like the perfect blend of power and efficiency.”
Engine & Transmission
| Specification | Details |
| Engine | 155 cc, Liquid-Cooled, Single-Cylinder |
| Power | 18.1 bhp @ 10,000 rpm |
| Torque | 14.2 Nm @ 7,500 rpm |
| Transmission | Six-Speed Manual |

City Riding Experience
Compared to the MT-15, the XSR feels roomier, giving you more space to move around. Compared to the R15, it’s not so imposing either, so there isn’t any problem moving the torquey engine around the city. The gearbox is slick and works well, but Yamaha owners often mention one thing about their vehicles. It's that there’s an occasional glitch while working the second gear down to first or neutral, irrespective of the bike model.
Highway Riding Experience
The engine comes into its own at the higher end, giving you the long-term acceleration that a 200–250 cc bike can usually pull off. This achievement is a nod to Yamaha’s VVA technology, making a 155 cc engine equally efficient. The top gear also uses a 48-teeth rear sprocket tuned more for top speed, but a 50-teeth rear sprocket for lower revs would have been nice, too.
This motorcycle draws heavy inspiration from the retro-styled XSR900 that the brand sells internationally. The XSR 155 is essentially a scaled-down version of it, and since it originated as an international offering, the looks, lines, and proportions are all spot on. You get a pleated seat, a minimalistic design, and a round tail lamp.
Proportions & Stance
| Model | Length | Width | Seat Height | Kerb Weight |
| Yamaha XSR 155 | 2,005 mm | 805 mm | 810 mm | 137 kg |
| Royal Enfield Hunter 350 | 2,055 mm | 800 mm | 790 mm | 181 kg |
| TVS Ronin 225 | 2,040 mm | 805 mm | 795 mm | 159 kg |
The motorcycle has a relatively tall 810 mm seat height, but it’s also much, much lighter than the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 or the TVS Ronin 225 at 137 kg. The latter leaves room for doubt about how long it can handle triple-digit speeds without crosswinds affecting its body.
Build Quality & Materials
While the paint quality is good, the plastic quality of the switchgear feels cost-cutting. It does not have the typical finesse that the Japanese brand is known for. Furthermore, retro-style motorcycles look a lot cooler and smarter when the engine bay is neatly tucked and clean, so the brand could have done something better by hiding the hoses and cables sticking out here.

Yamaha XSR 155 Colours
The brand currently offers this motorcycle in five different shades.
- Metallic Blue
- Vivid Red
- Metallic Grey
- Metallic Black
- Greyish Green Metallic

The visual appeal of this bike depends heavily on mixing up old-school charm with modern hardware. It gets a circular headlamp and an all-LED lighting setup, giving it a retro yet modern appeal.
Lighting & Front Identity
- The circular LED headlamp does a good job when you are riding in the city, offering a decent spread and intensity.
- However, if you are riding on a poorly lit road or out on the highway, the illumination quality feels compromising.
- There are traditional, bulb-type halogen indicators on either side of the headlamp.
- The exhaust pipe is long and stretches over half of the rear tyre, a common design seen in the R15 and the MT-15 as well.
Side Profile & Rear Section
- The footpegs are a bit rear-set, forcing a sporty riding posture.
- The neo-retro side profile is seen best from this angle, with the 10-litre teardrop fuel tank and the long single-piece seat.
- Yamaha’s signature Deltabox (Perimeter) frame is also noticeable, protecting the liquid-cooled engine.
- At the rear, there is the circular LED tail lamp under the saddle, and the 140/70-17 rear tyre makes the bike look bigger than it actually is.
Practical Integration
The control layout honestly generates mixed opinions. The pass button has been integrated with the high/low beam selector. So, instead of having a conventional pass trigger at the front, you have to take your thumb off the grip to use it while riding. On multiple occasions, riders ended up honking when they actually wanted to use their indicators. Meanwhile, seat space is sufficient for both rider and pillion, but minimal to zero storage space exists in this bike.
This motorcycle is more costly than typical 150 cc commuters, and it also arrived a bit late; had it been launched sooner, it would not have had too many existing rivals. Today, it mostly squares off against the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 and the TVS Ronin 225. However, we also need to note that both of those rivals are easygoing cruisers, while this is a performance motorcycle at heart.
According to Janak,
"The Yamaha XSR 155 makes a very strong case for itself if you want a retro-styled motorcycle that packs genuine performance credentials."
| Variant | Key Features | Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
| Standard (Metallic Blue) | Circular LCD console, LED lighting, single-piece seat | Rs. 1.50 Lakh |
| Standard (Vivid Red) | Circular LCD console, LED lighting, single-piece seat | Rs. 1.53 Lakh |
| Standard (Metallic Grey) | Circular LCD console, LED lighting, single-piece seat | Rs. 1.57 Lakh |
| Standard (Metallic Black / Green) | Circular LCD console, LED lighting, single-piece seat | Rs. 1.59 Lakh |
Despite its sporty nature, the running costs will not burn a hole in your pocket. Thanks to its lightweight construction and efficient powertrain, it is quite frugal, similar to the R15 and the MT-15. The motor's efficiency has only gotten better over time compared to older generations, and combined with a lighter curb weight, the motorcycle manages to return close to 50 kmpl.
| Riding Condition | Observed Mileage |
| ARAI Claimed | 45.5 kmpl |
| Real-World City | 42-45 kmpl |
| Real-World Highway | 48-50 kmpl |
| Aggressive Riding | 38-40 kmpl |
As expected, Yamaha’s motorcycles in this space always have highly impressive fuel efficiency, even if they are performance-oriented machines. On the XSR 155, you can easily cover around 400 kilometres before needing a refill.
Yamaha has provided this motorcycle with functional electronics that balance out vintage aesthetics with modern, necessary convenience. It does not complicate the rider's experience, but whatever you need for daily commutes, it’s there.

Instrumentation & Connectivity
- The single-round LCD instrument console perfectly keeps the old-school vibe alive but displays modern data like gear position, fuel level, and trip details.
- It has Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to pair their smartphones for call alerts and messages.
- The display is bright enough to read under direct sunlight, but its compact size means the information feels slightly cramped.
Practical Technology & Storage Integration
- To keep the retro-sport look clean, storage space is practically non-existent. You will only find enough room under the seat for the motorcycle's basic documents.
- Yamaha has fitted a full-LED lighting system; the round headlamp and taillight look classic but offer moderate brightness.
- Honestly, the wiring around the engine block feels a bit messy. A cleaner routing would have vastly improved the bike's visual appeal.
Safety Technology
- The motorcycle features a standard dual-channel ABS, which offers strong braking confidence when the roads get slippery.
- A non-switchable traction control system is also present, stepping in quietly if the rear wheel loses grip.
In ride and handling, the motorcycle truly shows its colours. Borrowing the famed Deltabox frame from the R15, it behaves like a focused sports bike wearing casual street clothes.
City Handling
Riding through heavy city traffic with the XSR is fun. The motorcycle weighs just 137 kg, making it easy to flick through tight gaps. The handlebars have wide flexibility, letting you tackle challenging U-turns without any stress.
Highway Stability
Out on the open road, the bike holds its line with firm conviction. The chassis remains stable even when cruising near 100 kmph, but here, the bike’s light weight also acts like a double-edged sword; crosswinds hold back its top performance levels. Meanwhile, overtaking requires you to drop down a gear to keep the rev-happy engine in its sweet spot.
Suspension Behaviour
Yamaha has made the USD forks and rear monoshock a bit stiff. On good roads, it feels reliable, begging you to charge at corners. But on broken, patchy gravel, the ride gets bumpy, and the suspension makes sure you will feel the jolts on your lower back.
Rider & Pillion Comfort
- The 810 mm seat height is accessible for average-sized riders, though shorter individuals might have to tip-toe in traffic.
- The riding posture requires a slight lean forward, making it more aggressive than a standard commuter.
- The pillion seat is short and lacks practical grab rails, making it less ideal for very long journeys.
Choosing the right option here is pretty simple since Yamaha keeps the XSR lineup mostly uniform, with the primary differences boiling down to cosmetic preferences. We have divided our recommendations based on the colour that may match your personality and vibe.
Which Yamaha XSR 155 Should You Buy?
- Standard Metallic Colours: Available in shades like Metallic Blue, Metallic Grey, and Vivid Red, they are perfect for buyers who want a clean retro look without paying much for other fancy decals.
- Special Edition/Dual-Tone Variants: These are a few slightly pricier dual-tone options, like the Metallic Black and Greyish Green Metallic. The variants add a more custom, premium feel to the bike's appearance, justifying the minor price bump for riders who want their machine to stand out further.
- Accessory Kits: For those wanting a specific stance, Yamaha offers official Cafe Racer and Scrambler accessory kits. We highly recommend the Scrambler kit for its added fly screen and engine protectors if you plan to tackle rougher roads, while the Cafe Racer kit suits buyers wanting a pure vintage racing vibe.
The neo-retro segment in India is highly crowded, with several brands trying to woo buyers who want classic styling mixed with modern reliability. While both of its rivals have larger capacity engines, they are priced very closely to the Yamaha. Yes, Yamaha’s always been known to highly price even their smaller segment bikes in relation to the market’s average pricing strategy.
The Hunter 350 pulls buyers with its easy-going torque and legendary brand value. The TVS Ronin focuses on relaxed ergonomics and a strong low-end punch for comfortable daily commuting. However, the Yamaha takes a different approach. It targets riders who prefer a lightweight, high-revving engine and sharp handling over laid-back cruising.
Janak mentions,
"It is a performance motorcycle at heart, simply draped in a retro wardrobe."
Segment Comparison
| Model | Engine Output | Claimed Mileage | Key Strength | Ex-Showroom Price |
| Yamaha XSR 155 | 18.1 bhp / 14.2 Nm | 45.5 kmpl | Sharp handling, high-revving engine | Rs. 1.50 - 1.59 Lakh |
| TVS Ronin | 20.1 bhp / 19.9 Nm | 42.9 kmpl | Relaxed ergonomics, strong low-end | Rs. 1.35 - 1.73 Lakh |
| Royal Enfield Hunter 350 | 20.2 bhp / 27 Nm | 36.2 kmpl | Torquey engine, classic charm | Rs. 1.38 - 1.67 Lakh |
- Choose the Yamaha XSR 155 if you want a lightweight, sporty machine that promises aggressive corners and frequent redline performance.
- Choose the TVS Ronin if you want a comfortable daily commute with a light clutch and plenty of other modern features.
- Choose the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 if you want your bike to feel heavy and your engine to have that signature Royal Enfield thump.
Pros
- Brilliant 155 cc VVA engine
- Lightweight 137 kg body
- Striking neo-retro styling
- Fuel economy near 46 kmpl
Cons
- Stiff suspension makes bumpy roads tiring
- The pillion seat is small and uncomfortable
- Messy cable routing around the engine bay
Verdict
The Yamaha XSR 155 is one bold move from the Japanese brand, being a neo-retro offering that proves that classic aesthetics can coexist with good performance and dynamics. This machine is genuinely fun when you push its throttle hard, and it handles most of the riding stuff well, such as braking confidence or superbly executed corners.
Sure, it has its flaws, as any other motorcycle does. For instance, the stiff ride quality may annoy some, while the switchgear plastics do not feel like they belong on a premium motorcycle at all. The seating is also focused on making the rider comfortable, not the pillion; the latter suffers during long trips.
But if you are a solo rider in love with the vintage aesthetic but dislike the heavy, lazy nature of traditional classic bikes, the XSR 155 presents the perfect middle ground. It gives you the raw excitement of a proper sports bike, cleverly disguised as a retro beauty.
