car&bike Expert Take
“The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is best suited to urban buyers who prefer practicality, easy drivability and low running cost over all else. It is not directed at those looking for premium interiors or high-speed stability. But its biggest strength is that it’s one of the most space-efficient and economical city hatchbacks in its price range.”

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Overview
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been a familiar name on Indian roads since its debut in 1999 in the 'tall-boy' hatchback segment, and it has sold about 34.1 lakh units as of June 2025. Its current third-generation avatar was launched in 2019, which was further updated with cleaner engines (BS6-compliant petrol variants and S-CNG variant) in 2022. Today, the 'Big New Wagon R' is built on the HEARTECT platform after its latest update in 2025, an identity it shares with its other siblings: the Swift, Ignis, and Ciaz.
This review of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R has been compiled from extensive road testing by our car&bike team as seen in our YouTube video. The 2019 iteration of this car was tested by Siddharth Vinayak Patankar for both manual and automatic variants. Siddharth also wrote a comparison review between the Wagon R and the Hyundai Santro to evaluate the former’s overall performance.
Positioned as a purely functional city car, the currently available Maruti Suzuki Wagon R sits above the Alto K10 and S-Presso, but below the Swift in the brand’s hierarchy. But despite any compromises, it remains an unapologetic practical haulier for the Indian market, consistently ranking among the top five best-selling cars in India.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R delivers an enjoyable ride quality thanks to its low curb weight and peppy K-series engines.
Engine Options Tested
| Engine | Power | Torque |
| 1.0-litre K10C Petrol | 66 bhp | 89 Nm |
| 1.2-litre K12N Petrol | 89 bhp | 113 Nm |
| 1.0-litre CNG | 56 bhp | 82.1 Nm |

Driving Experience: Real World
Our road tests were conducted in Udaipur to gauge how the tall-boy handles different environments. We found that the car’s light steering and tight turning radius of 4.7 metres make it easy to park and traverse tight lanes. However, the suspension is a bit soft, so body roll and vertical movements are possible when tackling corners at high speeds.
1.0-litre K10C Petrol
This entry-level 1.0-litre Dual Jet engine has three cylinders. In city traffic, it feels enough to drive, as it offers decent low-end grunt for bumper-to-bumper commutes. But when pushed hard on the highway, the engine struggles to go past 100 kmph. This can make overtaking challenging.
According to Siddharth,
“This engine benefits from the lighter HEARTECT platform and has been retuned for better fuel efficiency.”
1.2-litre K12N Petrol
The 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is the best among the three variants and has been exclusively tested by Siddharth in Udaipur. Its refinement levels are much higher than the base variant, and in our testing, it did not choke at 100 kmph. The extra torque (113 Nm) also meant fewer gear changes were required in the city. As a highway tourer, this is the most appropriate choice.
1.0-litre CNG
Maruti Suzuki’s CNG option delivers lower power of 56 bhp, but it is still enough to propel the car without any disturbance. On inclines, it may feel sluggish, but on flat roads, the performance deficit can be ignored in favour of far better running costs.
Transmission: AGS (AMT) vs Manual
A five-speed manual gearbox is available for all three variants of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R. The typical AGS (Auto Gear Shift) from Maruti has improved a lot in recent years, but the ‘head-nod’ during aggressive shifts is still noticeable. Do note that AGS is only available on 1-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines on VXI, ZXI and ZXI+ trims.
Siddharth notices,
“The AMT has become significantly smoother, though it still exhibits slight hesitation when switching quickly between Reverse and Drive. It’s also an urban family car. It’s not trying to be anything else. It is faster than before; it tops 90 kmph pretty quickly on the highway, but after that, it’s a tedious increase to 100 kmph. Then, it struggles to go above 120 kmph in the 1.0-litre trim.”
Regarding the updated look, Siddharth notes,
“While some critics still compare its 'tallboy' silhouette to a 'bread box,' it is a massive departure from the previous generation. The wider track allowed designers to add sculpting to the metal, particularly around the shoulders and wheel arches.”

The front of the car has a modern grille with a chrome bar on higher variants, and large swept-back headlamps that make the car feel wider than it actually is. The side profile retains the floating roof achieved with a blacked-out C-pillar. We noticed that the fourteen-inch wheels look undersized for the tall body. As for the rear, it has massive vertical taillamps extending up to the roof. Unlike the Renault Kwid or the Tata Punch, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R does not try to look like an SUV; it is an MPV-shaped hatchback, and is designed like one.
According to Siddharth,
“If you’re comparing it to a Corvette, then yes, you’ll be disappointed. But compare it to the previous Wagon R. I mean, have you ever seen 'good looks' and 'Wagon R' in the same sentence? It just doesn’t happen.”
Tata Tiago vs Maruti Suzuki Wagon R vs Citroen C3 Dimensions
| Dimension | Maruti Suzuki Wagon R | Tata Tiago | Citroen C3 |
| Length | 3,655 mm | 3,765 mm | 3,981 mm |
| Width | 1,620 mm | 1,677 mm | 1,733 mm |
| Height | 1,675 mm | 1,535 mm | 1,604 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,435 mm | 2,400 mm | 2,540 mm |
| Ground Clearance | 165 mm | 170 mm | 180 mm |
Two of its closest rivals, the Tata Tiago and the Citroen C3, are much longer and wider cars, which makes the Wagon R a much more practical option in congested cities.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R’s exterior elements have managed to modernise the ‘tall-boy’ template without losing its core identity.
Front Profile
The Wagon R’s front end is now more architectural than utilitarian. Earlier, there was a boxy bonnet here. Now, it has been replaced by a more sculpted unit that sits higher, giving the driver a commanding view of the road. The grille design has a cross-mesh pattern, while the headlamps are large, dual-split units.
Side Profile
We notice that the sheer height of 1,675 mm makes it a taller option than several compact SUVs. To mask the slab-sided look, Maruti has also introduced a "floating roof" effect with a blacked-out C-pillar, which visually lowers the roofline. The wheel arches are more pronounced as well, but the wheel sizes remain a point of contention. The lower variants ride on thirteen-inch steel wheels, which look undersized, while the top-end variants get fourteen-inch alloys (painted black in the ZXi+ trim) that fill the arches better but still leave a gap, hinting at the suspension travel tuned for bad roads.
According to Siddharth,
“The wheels appear a bit small for the body size; larger wheels and a thicker rear overhang would have further improved the proportions.”
Rear Profile
The vertical taillamps are massive; they start from the bumper and extend all the way to the roof rail level, a design similar to Volvo’s offerings, albeit executed on a budget. The tailgate is also nearly flat and vertical, but this has been done intentionally to maximise the 341-litre boot space. And finally, a thick chrome plate with ‘WAGON R’ embossing sits above the number plate housing on higher trims.
The cabin feels huge, and fused with the dual-tone "Premium Beige and Dark Grey" theme, it helps reduce the claustrophobia of small cars.
Cabin Layout and Quality
The centre console has the ‘SmartPlay Studio’ infotainment system (on VXi and above), surrounded by vertical AC vents. The compromise to material quality is evident; to our touch, the plastics are hard, scratchy, and built for durability rather than tactile pleasure. However, the fit and finish are consistent, with no uneven panel gaps.
Seating Comfort
Front Row
The front seats are tall, allowing occupants to "walk in" rather than crawl into the car. This makes the vehicle a popular choice among elderly buyers. All the seats are flat with limited bolstering; good enough for commuting, but less helpful during cornering. Another cost-cutting measure seen inside the car is the fixed headrests that taller drivers might find annoying.
Second Row
In our review, we noticed the rear doors open nearly 90 degrees, making access effortless. The floor is almost flat, too, which makes the middle passenger feel more welcome than in most rivals. However, we also noticed that the seat bench is flat and lacks under-thigh support for tall passengers on long journeys.

According to Siddharth,
“Exceptional legroom and headroom make it stand out.”
Features That Improve Daily Use
Maruti has given some practical features to the Wagon R instead of chasing brochure headlines.
- SmartPlay Studio: This seven-inch touchscreen is responsive and supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
- Digilogs: The instrument cluster is a semi-digital unit that provides all the necessary data from fuel efficiency to the distance-to-empty meter.
- Practical Storage: The door pockets can hold 1-litre bottles, and there is a usable shelf above the glovebox for phones or wallets.
- Steering Controls: Audio and call controls are available on the steering wheel, keeping the driver focused on driving.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R price bracket targets different buyers, from budget-conscious owners to small families looking for a city car. While it is a bit pricier than most of its competitors, such as the Tata Tiago or the Renault Kwid, its spaciousness and more powerful engines in this price bracket make it an attractive choice. Starting at Rs. 4.99 Lakh, the Wagon R is priced higher than other options in the market, like the S-Presso and the Celerio from the same brand.

Wagon R Ex-Showroom Prices (India)
| Variant | Engine & Transmission | Ex-Showroom Price (Approx.) |
| LXi | 1.0-litre Petrol MT | Rs. 5.54 Lakh |
| VXi | 1.0-litre Petrol MT / AGS | Rs. 6.00 – Rs. 6.50 Lakh |
| ZXi | 1.2-litre Petrol MT / AGS | Rs. 6.28 – Rs. 6.78 Lakh |
| ZXi+ | 1.2-litre Petrol MT / AGS | Rs. 6.75 – Rs. 7.25 Lakh |
| LXi CNG | 1.0-litre CNG MT | Rs. 6.45 Lakh |
| VXi CNG | 1.0-litre CNG MT | Rs. 6.89 Lakh |
Note: Prices are subject to change and vary by state.
The primary factor that has made the Wagon R such a huge success in the Indian market has always been efficiency. Moreover, the current generation is carrying on the tradition by using the Dual Jet, Dual VVT technology of Maruti Suzuki that has idle start-stop features in the entire petrol range.
Observed Fuel Efficiency During Testing
In actual testing conditions, we discovered that the 1.0-litre AMT version is efficient in stop-start city traffic conditions, and is sometimes as efficient as the manual version. Nonetheless, aggressive highway driving will lead to the use of more fuel, particularly in the smaller engine, which has to strain itself to reach triple-digit speeds. Figures of mileage are as follows, across our testing:
Engine & Transmission | ARAI-Claimed Mileage | City Mileage (Real-World) | Highway Mileage (Real-World) |
1.0-Litre Petrol Manual | 24.35 kmpl | 15–18 kmpl | 20–22 kmpl |
1.0-Litre Petrol AGS (AMT) | 25.19 kmpl | 16–18 kmpl | 21–23 kmpl |
1.2-Litre Petrol Manual | 23.56 kmpl | 14–18 kmpl | 20–22 kmpl |
1.2-Litre Petrol AGS (AMT) | 24.43 kmpl | 19–20 kmpl | 22–24 kmpl |
1.0-Litre CNG Manual | 34.05 km/kg | 25–30 km/kg | 32 km/kg |
The Wagon R’s safety has been questioned for years by automotive enthusiasts, but the new 2025 model changes this by bringing several improvements to the equipment list.
Passive Safety and Crash Protection
All variants now have six airbags, and this update has improved passenger protection compared to the previous dual-airbag models. The front, side, and curtain inflatables located inside the car now help in reducing injury risks during an accident.
But, when tested by Global NCAP back in 2023, the Wagon R received a rating of one star for adult occupant protection (19.69 out of 34 points) and a zero-star rating for child occupant protection. This rating implies that the stability of the cabin in case of severe impacts is still in question. For example, in the case of a collision, there is minimal protection for the chest and head in certain cases. Also, rival vehicles such as the Tata Tiago have superior structural integrity when compared to the Wagon R.
Active Safety and Stability Systems in Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
In the active safety suite segment, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R covers the basics. The car offers Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard, a feature that prevents skidding on slippery surfaces or during sudden manoeuvres. Additionally, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) are useful for braking too. For the AMT variants, there is a Hill Hold Assist feature to help the car stay stable on slopes. Other standard features included are rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminders for all seats, and speed-sensitive auto door locks.
Safety Verdict
According to our analysis, the Wagon R has become a safer vehicle with the standardisation of six airbags and ESP. But the one-star Global NCAP rating still leaves room for doubt, indicating that while it has the features to mitigate injuries, its structural crashworthiness may not rival that of competitors like the Tiago.
Technology in the Wagon R is purely functional. There are no flashy digital driver displays or sunroofs here; instead, the focus is on robust, easy-to-use systems that help the daily commuter.
Infotainment and Interface
The centrepiece of the dashboard is the seven-inch SmartPlay Studio infotainment system. During our review, we found the interface to be vibrant and responsive, with no noticeable lag. It supports wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing seamless navigation and music streaming.
The audio system, meanwhile, has four speakers; all four of them offer decent sound quality for the segment, though audiophiles will find the bass lacking. Steering-mounted audio and voice controls add a layer of convenience, allowing the driver to manage calls and music without taking their hands off the wheel.
Cabin Convenience and Practical Tech
The cabin has many practical features, from the remote keyless entry system to the electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs. The instrument cluster, while not fully digital, features a clear multi-information display that provides readouts to help drivers maximise mileage. However, even in 2026, the car lacks a reverse parking camera.
People also prefer the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R over entry-level hatchbacks like the Alto or S-Presso for its adequate boot space. Its tall-boy stance allows for a deep and vertical luggage area that is surprisingly accommodating.
- With rear seats up: 341 litres
- With rear seats folded: Over 700 litres
- CNG Variant: Significantly reduced (due to 60-Litre water-equivalent cylinder)
In real-world use, the 341-litre boot is segment-leading and can easily fit two medium-sized suitcases along with a couple of soft bags. The wide boot opening and relatively low loading lip also make it easy for the owner to slide heavy items in without lifting them too high. This versatility is further complemented by the 60:40 split-folding rear seats (available on VXi trims and above), which allow owners to carry longer objects while still seating a third passenger. However, for CNG buyers, the spare wheel and cylinder eat up most of the usable floor space, leaving room only for small soft bags or a laptop backpack.

Siddharth notes,
“The space in the Wagon R is commendable and it delivers where it counts, especially for luggage duties.”
Built on the HEARTECT platform, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R provides a lightweight yet rigid chassis, and the suspension tuning is soft to tackle Indian road conditions.
City Driving
This is the Wagon R's natural habitat. In our review, we found out that the high seating position offers excellent visibility, allowing the driver to spot potholes and gaps in traffic with ease. The steering is also extremely light at low speeds, which, combined with a tight turning radius of 4.7 metres, makes parking in tight spots or taking U-turns effortless. The soft suspension, meanwhile, absorbs low-speed bumps and undulations competently, isolating occupants from the harshness of broken city roads. This is a car built for daily commutes to the office.
Highway Driving
We noticed in our ride review that the same soft suspension, which helps in seamless city riding, now bounces at triple-digit speeds. Due to its boxy, tall design, the car is also vulnerable to crosswinds; you will feel a tug when overtaking large trucks or driving on exposed flyovers. As for the steering, it lacks the reassuring feedback found in the Tata Tiago or the Swift. Its best performance is between 80 and 90 kmph, where the 1.2-litre engine feels relaxed, and the chassis remains composed.
According to Siddharth,
“While faster than before, it isn't a 'highway monster.' It reaches 90 km/h quickly, but acceleration becomes tedious beyond 100 km/h, topping out around 120 km/h.”
Maruti Suzuki has structured the Wagon R lineup into four primary trims, LXi, VXi, ZXi, and ZXi+, spread across two engine options and two transmission choices. Here’s a crisp table that mentions what each trim brings to the table and adds as we go up the order

| Variant | Engine & Gearbox Options | Key Additions | Best Suited For |
| LXi | 1.0-litre Petrol (MT) / 1.0-litre CNG (MT) | Covers basics like front power windows, manual AC with heater, central locking, and thirteen-inch steel wheels | Budget-focused city buyers |
| VXi | 1.0-litre Petrol (MT / AMT) | Remote keyless entry, tilt steering, rear power windows, SmartPlay Dock (Bluetooth/USB/Aux), two speakers, fourteen-inch wheel covers, body-coloured mirrors & handles, 60:40 split rear seats, parcel tray | Value seekers wanting convenience |
| ZXi | 1.2-litre Petrol (MT / AMT) | Upgrades to 1.2-litre engine, steering-mounted controls, electrically adjustable ORVMs, blacked-out B-pillars | Buyers who want better highway refinement |
| ZXi+ | 1.2-litre Petrol (MT / AMT) | seven-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, four speakers, alloy wheels, front fog lamps, rear wiper/washer/defogger, electrically folding ORVMs with indicators, dual-tone option | Feature-focused urban buyers |
The Essentials That You Don’t Get Are
- No reverse parking camera
- No rear AC vents
- No central armrest
- No height-adjustable driver’s seat
- No adjustable rear headrests
With multiple engines and fuel options, the "right" Wagon R for you depends entirely on how you use your vehicle.
Best for Budget & City Use: 1.0-Litre VXi
If you only want to drive the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R inside the city, the 1.0-litre VXi variant makes sense. It has all the basics: power windows, remote entry, and a music system without the price tag of its larger sibling.
Best for Mixed Usage & Highway: 1.2-Litre ZXi / ZXi+
For highway cruising, the 1.2-litre engine is the non-negotiable choice. The ZXi also offers a good balance compared to the base variant, but if you want the touchscreen and alloy wheels, the more pricier ZXi+ is the one to pick.
Best for High Mileage Runners: 1.0-Litre LXi / VXi CNG
For commercial users or those with daily running exceeding 50 km, the CNG variants are the most suitable to purchase. With figures touching over 30 km/kg, this is the most budget-friendly choice over the long run.
While the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R dominates its rivals in terms of vertical space and practicality, others offer better driving dynamics, safety, or distinct styling. Its primary challengers are the Tata Tiago, the Citroen C3, and Maruti’s own Celerio.
The Tata Tiago is the most direct alternative, offering superior build quality and a four-star Global NCAP safety rating, which highlights the Wagon R’s structural deficiencies. The Citroen C3 brings French flair and ride comfort to the table. Meanwhile, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio offers the same powertrain but in a more conventional, rounded hatchback form factor.
Model | Engine Options | Mileage (ARAI) | Key Value Proposition | Ex-showroom Price Range |
1.0-litre / 1.2-litre Petrol, CNG | 23.56 – 25.19 kmpl | Unmatched headroom and resale value | Rs. 5.54 – Rs. 7.38 Lakh
1.2-litre Petrol, CNG | 19.00 – 26.49 km/kg | 4-Star Safety Rating and solid build | Rs. 5.65 – Rs. 8.90 Lakh
1.2-litre NA / Turbo Petrol | 19.30 kmpl | Ride comfort and cabin width | Rs. 6.16 – Rs. 9.00 Lakh
1.0-litre Petrol, CNG | 25.24 – 26.68 kmpl | Highest fuel efficiency in the segment | Rs. 5.37 – Rs. 7.09 Lakh |
- Choose the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R if you want a city-friendly car or if you have elderly family members and also prefer maximum cabin space.
- Choose the Tata Tiago if you do not want to compromise on safety, because you hit the highways often.
- Choose the Citroen C3 if you want your ride to be more comfortable and you value design language equally.
- Choose the Maruti Suzuki Celerio if fuel efficiency is the most important factor when you purchase a vehicle, and you’re looking for a typical hatchback form factor.
Pros
- Tall stance and wide-opening doors
- Tall passengers have surplus headroom
- Refined engine for city traffic
- Exceptional mileage from the CNG version
- Very good resale value
Cons
- 1-star rating from Global NCAP
- Noticeable body roll when cornering at speed
- The rear bench is flat with no contouring
- No reverse parking camera or adjustable headrests
- Plastic build quality of the interior
Verdict
To date, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R remains the most functional hatchback for an Indian family. It is not a driver’s car or a luxury statement; instead, it is a practical tool for transportation, and Maruti Suzuki has built it that way. The 1.2-litre engine also refines what was missing in previous generations, making it the go-to city car that can also handle occasional highway sprints. However, the safety aspect cannot be ignored either, as the 1-star Global NCAP rating is quite poor in an era where consumers are becoming increasingly safety-conscious.
Siddharth concludes,
“It remains a purpose-built, practical urban car, but now with added panache and modern tech. By offering two engine choices and an AMT option from the launch, Maruti has set a new benchmark for the segment.”
Overall, if you prioritise highway driving, there are better options in the Indian market. But if you want a spacious, reliable, and highly efficient city car, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is the pragmatic king.
