Verdict

The 7-inch touchscreen is standard, and comes with Porsche Communication Management. Apple CarPlay is part of standard equipment while it's optional in other markets. Android Auto doesn't have an existence in the 718 yet. It has been launched at ₹ 85.53 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. Is it a practical car for Indian roads - assuming you have that kind of cash? The answer is no - but it is certainly more so now over the car it's replacing, and dare I say even more so than its legendary brother 911.

Porsche 718 Boxster: A Thrilling Revelation

Porsche, a name synonymous with luxury and performance, rarely ceases to intrigue automobile aficionados. The Porsche 718 Boxster convertible stands testament to this very reputation. From its first appearance, it hinted at a promise of something extraordinary, seamlessly blending the brand’s rich legacy with modern-day innovations. Its introduction to the Indian market, alongside the equally captivating 718 Cayman, was much anticipated. And the thought of its wheels rolling on the scenic stretches of California only accentuated the allure, promising a ride under the perfect blend of sun and sky.

Design and Styling

The 718 Boxster is not just a car; it’s a narrative on wheels. Its design traces back to the golden era of the 1950s and 60s when the original 718 was the jewel in Porsche’s racing crown, marking victories at prestigious events like the Targa Florio and Le Mans. With the new Boxster, Porsche aimed to recapture and honor that essence. At first glance, the vehicle commands attention with its sleek lines, aerodynamic silhouette, and an unmistakable Porsche grille. The headlights, sharp and piercing, give it an aggressive stance, while the tail lights, with their distinct signature, speak of sophistication. The design isn’t merely about aesthetics; it narrates a story of a brand that values its heritage while staying ahead of its time.

Interior and Features

Stepping inside the 718 Boxster is akin to entering a world where luxury meets cutting-edge technology. The cabin, bathed in soft-touch materials and intricate detailing, showcases Porsche’s commitment to comfort and opulence. Every element, from the leather-wrapped steering wheel to the meticulously stitched seats, echoes premium craftsmanship. The driver-centric dashboard is intuitive, ensuring every control is within arm’s reach. Dominating the console is the 7-inch touchscreen, a hub of entertainment and information including Porsche Communication Management. Additionally, Apple CarPlay comes as a standard, enhancing the in-drive entertainment, though Android Auto is conspicuously absent.

Safety

For Porsche, the safety of its occupants is paramount. The 718 Boxster is equipped with a suite of advanced safety features designed to protect in every scenario. From high-speed collisions to unforeseen obstacles, the car seems always prepared. Multiple airbags strategically positioned throughout the cabin ensure immediate response during impacts. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) coupled with electronic brake distribution (EBD) ensures that the car maintains traction and stability even under hard braking. Traction control and electronic stability programs work in tandem to prevent skidding and maintain the car’s direction, especially during challenging maneuvers. Additionally, features like parking sensors, rearview cameras, and lane departure warnings add an extra layer of protection, ensuring that drivers are always aware of their surroundings.

Engine and Performance

The 718 Boxster’s essence is captured by its turbocharged engine, a notable shift from its predecessor’s naturally aspirated 6-cylinder. However, this 4-cylinder engine focuses not just on sheer strength but on its refined delivery. The engine’s robust output ensures that the car responds eagerly to every throttle input. With two engine specifications available, the base variant offers near 300 bhp, providing an exhilarating drive. While India might not receive the more potent 350 bhp S variant, the available model is no slouch. The 7-Speed PDK (dual-clutch) automatic transmission ensures smooth and rapid gear shifts, complementing the engine’s performance. The result is a car that accelerates with purpose, cruises with ease, and roars with passion.

Ride and Handling

One of the standout attributes of the 718 Boxster is its impressive ride and handling. The car’s low center of gravity, combined with a precisely tuned suspension, ensures that it remains glued to the road, whether on tight corners or long stretches. The sharp and responsive steering borrowed from the new Porsche 911 series enhances the driving experience, providing feedback that’s both immediate and informative. PASM or Porsche Active Suspension Management adjusts the car’s damping on the fly, offering a tailored driving experience. Whether cruising in comfort mode or pushing the boundaries in sport mode, the car’s handling remains precise and predictable. The 718 Boxster isn’t just about speed; it’s about experiencing the joy of driving, feeling every twist and turn, and being in complete control.

Pricing

The 718 Boxster comes with a price tag of Rs. 1.52 cr ex-showroom price in New Delhi, a testament to its premium positioning in the market. When considering the 718 Boxster’s price point, it’s crucial to see it in light of the comprehensive features, unmatched performance, and Porsche’s rich heritage it represents. Investing in a Porsche isn’t just about owning a car; it’s about embracing a legacy of luxury.

Potential buyers can also consider the long-term value the 718 Boxster offers. Not only does it provide an outstanding driving experience, but the vehicle’s robust build and quality mean it’s designed to last, ensuring longevity. Moreover, Porsche vehicles historically have had decent resale values, thanks to the brand's global reputation and the consistent demand for its cars. In essence, while the initial investment might seem steep, the returns in terms of driving pleasure, status symbol, and eventual resale value make the 718 Boxster a worthy consideration for those who value luxury, performance, and quality in equal measure.

Which Variant to Buy?

The 718 Boxster offers multiple variants, each tailored to cater to a different set of driving enthusiasts. While India currently receives the base variant with close to 300 bhp, it’s no less captivating than its international counterparts. Paired with the 7-Speed PDK automatic transmission, it promises an exhilarating driving experience. Potential buyers should consider their driving preferences, with a focus on power, features, and driving conditions.

Competition

The luxury sports car segment in India is fiercely contested, with global giants vying for supremacy. In the 718 Boxster’s competitive landscape, notable adversaries include vehicles from brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Each competitor in this segment, from the BMW Z4 with its sporty appeal and convertible allure to the Mercedes-Benz SLK with its luxurious performance edge, has its own distinct identity and heritage to offer. However, the 718 Boxster, with its rich racing history and unmatched driving dynamics, holds its ground firmly, offering a unique proposition that’s hard to resist.
