Yezdi India: The Return of a Classic Motorcycle Name

Yezdi's story in India goes back to Jawa motorcycles from Czechoslovakia. Ideal Jawa started making them in Mysuru in 1961, and the Indian operation gradually built its own engineering expertise. The Yezdi name came in 1973, with bikes such as the Roadking, Classic and Monarch becoming popular across the country.

Yezdi became known for its simple mechanicals, distinctive styling and lively performance. Its motorcycles were also exported to several countries. However, the rise of fuel-efficient four-stroke bikes, tighter emission rules and other business challenges eventually brought production to an end in 1996.

The brand returned in 2022 under Classic Legends after a 26-year gap. This time, Yezdi kept its old-school character but paired it with modern engines, safety equipment and technology. The aim was to bring back the feel of the original brand without simply recreating its old motorcycles.

The current Yezdi bikes include the Roadster, Scrambler and Adventure. All three use a 334 cc single-cylinder engine, but each has a different purpose. The Roadster is suited to regular road riding, the Scrambler works well across different surfaces, and the Adventure is built more around touring.

Today's Yezdi motorcycles are manufactured at Classic Legends' facility in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. The bikes use modern production methods, although their styling and character still draw heavily from Yezdi's history.

In India, Yezdi sits in the premium mid-size motorcycle segment. It competes with other retro-styled roadsters, scramblers and adventure bikes, with its biggest strengths being its distinctive design, 334 cc performance and the heritage attached to the Yezdi name.

Which Yezdi Bike Works Best for You?

The right Yezdi depends largely on where you ride and what you expect from your motorcycle.

    Yezdi Performance and Engine

All three current Yezdi motorcycles use a 334 cc single-cylinder petrol engine, but their tuning and chassis setups give them different personalities. The Roadster produces around 29 PS and 29.4 Nm, while the Scrambler produces 29.77 PS and 28.21 Nm.

The Roadster is designed around smooth road performance and strong acceleration, making it suitable for both city riding and highway use. Its muscular proportions also give it a substantial road presence without moving into the weight and size of larger motorcycles.

The Scrambler takes a slightly more playful approach. Its shorter 1,403 mm wheelbase and flat torque delivery make it more willing to change direction, while its riding modes allow the motorcycle to adapt to different surfaces.

The Adventure focuses more heavily on long-distance riding. Its upright ergonomics and adventure-oriented design make it the natural choice for riders who regularly combine highways with broken roads and lighter trails.

Technology and Features on Yezdi Bikes

Yezdi keeps its motorcycles relatively focused on the riding experience, but the newer models still offer useful modern equipment.

    Riding Modes and ABS

The Scrambler gets different ABS modes for road, off-road and rain conditions. This allows the rider to alter the intervention depending on the surface and riding environment. The Roadster also gets dual-channel ABS, with the system helping maintain braking control during harder stops.

    Digital Instrumentation

Yezdi motorcycles use modern digital instrumentation to display essential riding information. Depending on the model, the rider can access details such as speed, engine information and other motorcycle-related data without losing the classic character of the overall design.

    Touring-Oriented Equipment

The Adventure is designed with longer rides in mind, while Yezdi also offers accessories such as handguards, headlamp protection and other touring equipment. This allows riders to adapt the motorcycle for more demanding journeys.

What Safety Features You Get on Yezdi Bikes?

Safety equipment varies between models and variants, but Yezdi provides modern braking and rider-control systems across its motorcycles.

    Dual-Channel ABS

The Roadster uses Continental dual-channel ABS, which helps prevent the front and rear wheels from locking during hard braking.

    Different ABS Modes

The Scrambler goes a step further with Road, Off-Road and Rain ABS modes. These settings alter the way the braking system intervenes depending on the riding conditions.

    Stable Chassis and Braking

The motorcycles use suspension and chassis setups designed around their intended riding styles. The Roadster prioritises predictable road handling, while the Scrambler and Adventure provide setups that are more accommodating when the surface becomes uneven.

Why Riders Consider Yezdi Bikes in India

Yezdi has a fairly clear identity in the Indian motorcycle market. Some of the reasons buyers consider the brand include:

    Distinctive Retro Design

Yezdi motorcycles combine classic styling cues with modern mechanicals. The Roadster in particular has a strong visual identity without being a traditional retro motorcycle in terms of its technology.

    Strong 334 cc Performance

The 334 cc engine gives all three motorcycles enough performance for city riding, highway cruising and overtaking without requiring riders to move into a larger engine category.

    Three Different Riding Styles

The Roadster, Scrambler and Adventure use the same broad mechanical foundation but appeal to different riders. This makes it easier to choose a Yezdi based on how you actually ride.

    Adventure and Scrambler Capability

The Scrambler and Adventure give riders more flexibility when roads become rough. They are particularly relevant to buyers who want something beyond a conventional road motorcycle.

    Strong Road Presence

Yezdi motorcycles have distinctive proportions and styling, making them stand out from more conventional commuter and roadster motorcycles.

What to Expect After Buying a Yezdi

The ownership experience is an important part of deciding whether a Yezdi works for you, especially when compared with motorcycles from brands with much larger service networks.

    Service Network

Yezdi has an authorised dealership and service network across several Indian cities. Before buying, check the location of your nearest Yezdi workshop, particularly if you live outside a major city. The company's dealer network allows buyers to enquire about prices, offers, finance and test rides.

    Maintenance Costs

Maintenance requirements depend on the motorcycle and how frequently you ride. The 334 cc engine means routine servicing, tyres, brake components and other consumables need to be factored into the ownership budget.

    Spare Parts

Common parts are available through the authorised network, but specialised components may take longer to source than parts for higher-volume commuter motorcycles. This is worth checking if you live in a smaller city.

    Resale Value

Resale value depends on the model, age, condition, mileage and service history. The Roadster and Scrambler have a wider appeal than more specialised motorcycles, while the Adventure is more relevant to buyers specifically looking for an adventure-tourer.

Factors to Consider Before Buying a Yezdi Bike

Yezdi motorcycles offer plenty of character, but they are not designed to be identical alternatives to mainstream commuter bikes.

    Choose the Right Riding Style

The Roadster is the better choice if most of your riding happens on paved roads. The Scrambler makes more sense if you want additional versatility, while the Adventure is better suited to touring and rougher routes.

    Consider the Weight and Size

A 334 cc motorcycle can feel considerably different from a lightweight commuter. Spend enough time with the bike at low speeds, during U-turns and while parking before deciding.

    Check Your Local Service Support

The Yezdi network is smaller than those of the largest Indian motorcycle manufacturers. Check the nearest authorised workshop before booking, especially if regular servicing would require a long trip.

    Calculate the Complete Ownership Cost

The Yezdi bike price is only the starting point. Insurance, registration, fuel, servicing, tyres and other consumables should all be included when working out the actual cost of ownership.

    Test Ride Before Choosing

The three Yezdi motorcycles have noticeably different riding positions and handling characteristics. A proper test ride can help you decide whether the Roadster, Scrambler or Adventure actually suits your riding style.

Expert Tips By car&bike For Buying a Yezdi

A Yezdi should be chosen around your riding habits rather than simply its design or engine capacity.

    • Choose the Roadster for mostly paved roads: It is the most natural option for city riding, weekend rides and regular highway use.
    • Pick the Scrambler for versatility: If you regularly switch between city roads, highways and rougher surfaces, its different ABS modes and scrambler setup make it more suitable.
    • Consider the Adventure for touring: If long-distance rides and mixed road conditions are a major part of your plans, the Adventure is the more natural choice.
    • Take the exact variant for a test ride: Check the riding position, clutch, throttle response, braking and low-speed balance before booking.
    • Compare the complete Yezdi bike price: Include insurance, registration, fuel, servicing and accessories rather than comparing only the ex-showroom figure.
    • Check the latest Yezdi bikes lineup: Prices, variants and equipment can change, so compare the latest Roadster, Scrambler and Adventure versions before making your final decision.

  • Performance Bike. Not for touring.

Scrambler is a performance bike. Took it to my office for few weeks at 50km round trip. Mileage is 25 kmpl. But solid built, accelaration, performance, maneuverability and feel. Only downside is mileage and stiff back after long tours.
